Digging the Shadow Show. I can definitely hear the Outrageous herry psych spooky vibe on it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:34pm Candy-O'67:

Oh, man, I'm sorry you didn't, Tim! I've seen them reformed several times in CA when I used to live out there and a couple times here in Austin. They've got a few young guys playing with them now. Singer of Lords of Altamont, Jake, and Evan Foster from the Boss Martians also play with them now when they last played! Hopefully they'll play again when this mess is over!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:35pm Candy-O'67:

Oh, and Dusty Watson drummed for them, too!
  12:35pm ashley morey:

Got to witness the Black Hollies cover of Real Crazy Apartment when they played with the Greenhornes at Maxwell’s several years back. In fact, I got to hear it a bit more than I would have liked given the number of times Justin practiced singing it ahead of time.... and yes, the rumors are true! First JAM solo single dropping in the coming weeks. Thanks for the shout out!!
Avatar 12:36pm Joe B:

@tim - well, co produced by matt smith would explain it!
Avatar 12:36pm Joe B:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:38pm McGroovey:

@Joe B
Sometimes a song sounds like something you've heard before. Sometimes that means it's great; sometimes that means it's horrible. That one is the former.
Avatar 12:39pm Joe B:

@mcgroovey - was just thinking that same thing
Avatar 12:39pm Joe B:

thanks iiibeat!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:39pm McGroovey:

Hi David, spodi.
  12:54pm David in London:

Spod. Excellent! Watch out around 4.47pm though. There’s a tricky bit around then.

  12:57pm John L:

Well, they also sing a song called Friendship.
Avatar 12:57pm David Shortell:

I definitely prefer this L-Seven to the Sub Pop band.
Avatar 12:57pm Joe B:

  1:17pm Dungaroos Kipawah:

Not for the first time have I been listening a RH story this week & broken info a smile, thinking “Roy Goddamn Head”! He was one funny loon. Imagining what he & Huey Meaux must’ve gotten into—or lived down to—in that “Crazy Cajun” era . . .
Avatar 1:19pm Joe B:

@dk - i cannot even imagine
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20pm Candy-O'67:

I bet they did, Dungaroos Kipawah! I'm from the Houston area and it's always a party! Grew up in the burbs and moved to the city after college. Lots of good memories there!

  1:21pm Listener Jumpy in Brooklyn:

What's the best Roy Head comp?
Avatar 1:22pm Joe B:

there's not one comprehensive one because he was on about 20 different labels. live it up on norton covers the earliest recordings in a great way. but it is all pre-treat her right
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:22pm KevinfromBayRidge:

Howdy Joe & All. Very happy that I got to see Roy at McCarren Park back awhile. Enjoyed him and rest of Ponderosa.

What year was that, Joe?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:23pm Handy Haversack:

Hey, spod, yeah I have been trying to make myself leave the apt. and walk ~3 miles every day. Supposedly the machine arrives tomorrow. Getting mighty sick of trying to get work done on this tiny screen -- and of not being able to go outside with it!
Avatar 1:24pm Joe B:

@kevin - 2007
  1:24pm Dungaroos Kipawah:

@Candy O’67: Houston’s large rep precedes it. Roy was like a cultural ambassador of that mayhem. Hope to experience some Houston when all this blows away

i can only imagine, Handy. I'd be bouncing off the walls. the waiting is the hardest part, per TP (without a doubt.) hope it finds it way to you on time *fingers crossed*

i need to walk more! (before i get any worse at it) -- have been too stationary and it showed when i spent about 3 hours shuffling around last week. *shakes fist at self*

Spodiodi. I think everyone’s become rather blobby after the past six months. I’ve really ramped up the walking during the past month and it’s made a real difference. We did a 10 mile coastal epic the week before last. Nearly killed me, but it was great.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:32pm Carmichael:

Here you go! The original.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:32pm Carmichael:

The opening song to The Commitments.
  1:33pm David in London:

I confess I don’t really know Roy Head’s work outside this one. That’s going to be put right now in no short order I can tell you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:33pm Candy-O'67:

@Dungaroos Kipawah, I hope you can, too! :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:35pm mariano:

I've got a fever. And the only prescription is more tambourine.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:36pm spodiodi:

David in London, atrophy is more a concern in my case, but it's really all the same, innit? (i about crawled into my place at the end of the 3 hour stint mentioned earlier.) i keep saying i need to get a daily walking routine worked out, but... the internet. and tv. and wfmu (lame excuse, spodi, you can take that with you!) yes, yes.

see anything good on your epic coastal walk?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:36pm mariano:

Tommy DeVito was the name of Pesci's character in Goodfellas (the real guy was named Tommy Di Simone).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:36pm tim from champaign (now washington):

Damn right, Joe!
Avatar 1:39pm Joe B:

@mariano - yes, pesci said that was intentional to call him devito
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:39pm Handy Haversack:

@Dungaroos K, hey there, pal.

Mariano, getting by, man. How fares the Marigny?

spod, when I lost my commute, I lost about four miles of baked-in walking. And like an idiot I never made up for it. I am just going to be better about letting work survive without me.

I walk back and forth twice over the Pulaski Bridge, which was always the best part of my commute. I can take the dog *and* I can read a book while I walk since there's no cross-traffic and they separated the cyclists to a different lane (which MOST riders manage to understand). So I'm also reading more again, which is good because I had really stagnated without the reading on that commute.

Also: damn right, Joe!
  1:41pm David in London:

Spodiodi, beautiful sea views and then some good buzzards patrolling the skies when we came inland a little. We finished at Camber Castle, which is awesome. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Camber_Castle
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:41pm Layet J:

Thanks for the great music today, Joe!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:43pm mariano:

Just rewatched Sopranos, forgot that Frankie Valli had a role in one of the seasons, a mobster derisively referred to as the Mayor of Munchkin Land by his detractors.

Marigny's good, Handy, thanks. Slowly coming back to life. Antoine's just reopened, a most propitious omen.
Avatar 1:43pm Joe B:

thanks for listening layet j!
Avatar 1:44pm Joe B:

that reminds me - fuck clint eastwood for doing such a shitty job on the jersey boys movie
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:44pm tim from champaign (now washington):

An "oldies" band I've really come to appreciate in recent years is The Hollies. I'd ignored them for a super long time. The song that grabbed me was Carousel because it sounded like the DNA bluprint for Guided By Voices.
Avatar 1:44pm Joe B:

thought valli was great in the sopranos!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:45pm Candy-O'67:

I've gotten more into The Hollies lately, too, Tim
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:45pm mariano:

Joe B: that's right, Pesci's also something of a lounge crooner isn't he, makes sense he'd know his fellow Jersey boys. Didn't know the name in Goodfellas was a deliberate tip of the hat though, thanks for the cool bit of trivia.
Avatar 1:46pm Joe B:

pesci was yes. and he did introduce devito to bob gaudio. so, pesci played a key role in rock and roll history
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:46pm mariano:

Yeah, Valli's got a pretty withering stare, Joe B. He totally sold that role.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:48pm Krys O.:

A friend named his daughter after this Four Seasons song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:48pm spodiodi:

David, the buzzards sound neat (birds are winning these days -- there is a flock of conures nearby whose numbers have increased noticeably -- hear them fly over each morning and evening).

and i dig that castle (you all have some old stuff :)
  1:48pm MikeDeeThrillSergeant:

Well arent you a man for 4 Seasons ;
  1:49pm David in London:

And a tip o’ the hat to Pesci’s wig in JFK.
What a syrup!
Avatar 1:50pm Hackensack Slim:

Hey Joe, Diggin the Sounds. Never knew the Q and the Mysterians got Can't Get Enough Of You Baby from the 4 Seasons. Thanks for the schoolin'.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:50pm spodiodi:

Handy, the bridge walk sounds rewarding. reading and walking? i have a ceiling of chewing gum and walking, i think. have an aunt who used to drive a lot for work, and read! (crazy.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:51pm Krys O.:

I'm steeped in the Four Seasons catalog from all those years listening to CBS-FM as a kid.
  1:51pm Listener Jumpy in Brooklyn:

Joe Pesci was also guitarist in one of Joey Dee's bands.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:52pm Krys O.:

I believe the Ondioline is what adds that touch of Meek.
  1:53pm Listener Jumpy in Brooklyn:

And on his solo album, LITTLE JOE SURE CAN SING, he did a couple of Beatles and Bee Gees songs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:53pm Handy Haversack:

We are thinking of rewatching /The Sopranos/ after we finish rewatching /The Wire/.

The attempted hit on Sil in a late-ish season is filmed in the Wburg standard Bamonte's, under the BQE.
  1:55pm Victrola Tom:

Hey Joe B! Nice Tommy D tribute! Tommy actually produced a record by my brothers band, the Four Kings out of Linden. The song was One Night, on Canadian American and it was written for the 4 Seasons. And my brother does the Franki Valli falsetto! Total rip off, but a great song!
Avatar 1:56pm Joe B:

wow tom, did not know that! amazing!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:00pm Gaylord Fields:

@Joe B: Thanks for the tributes!

@Victrola Tom: Too cool! I know that song from the 4 Seasons soundalikes comp on Teensville — it's pretty convincing, and also a good record in its own right!
Avatar 2:01pm David Shortell:

I avoided the movie "Jersey Boys". That bad, eh?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:01pm mariano:

Handy: I just finished the series, I think it's held up incredibly well. I rewatched the Wire a year or two ago, another show that's held up.
  2:01pm Sylvia's Mother:

Wait a minute! A guy named “Head” has a song called “Ain't Goin' Down Right”?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:02pm tim from champaign (now washington):

@Candi - I've had I Can't Let Go in my brain for a couple months. I watched a video of them playing it next to a canal that is so cool looking.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:03pm mariano:

Sylvia's Mother: let's hope his middle name wasn't Gibbon.
Avatar 2:05pm Joe McG:

It sounds like the Syndicate of Sound were hanging out with the Sir Doug Quintet, Joe!
  2:07pm SledDawg:

Treat Her Right was a great band named for that song. Precursor to Morphine, led by the genius mark Sandman. I saw them play at Live Tonight in Hoboken a bunch of times in the 80s/90s. The were on RCA so got screwed like so many others. Killer band with a unique worth seeking out. Hey JoeB: play some sometime! ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:07pm Yes:

it's been a sahm sounding afternoon
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:08pm Handy Haversack:

FMU fave Naked Roommate got highlighted in the "Best Punk on Bandcamp: September 2020" post, I see.
  2:09pm Tim from LH:

Great tributes, great selections Joe! It’s hard to keep with all of them this year.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:09pm tim from champaign (now washington):

Whoa! I was not aware of Dean Carter at all.
  2:11pm Dungaroos Kipawah:

@SledDog: Treat Her Right (the band) was great. Was playing their debut recently. “I Think She Likes Me That’s What I Think”!
  2:11pm Dungaroos Kipawah:

Pardon, “SledDawg”!!
Avatar 2:12pm Joe B:

@tim - dean is insane, even more so that he was doing his stuff while everyone else was going acid rock
Avatar 2:12pm Joe B:

thanks Tim LH! great to see you here
  2:13pm Luke Warm:

But will they play "Tusk" in it's entirety?
Avatar 2:13pm Joe B:

hey gaylord!
Avatar 2:17pm John from Madison:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:19pm Mike Sin:

Just got a chance to roll in now, but glad to catch the show from here on out!
  2:22pm SledDawg:

Dungaroos - one of my fondest "star encounters" was when I spotted Mark Sandman at the bar at Live Tonight during a crowded break (THR was >opening< for Hoboken local faves The Delevantes, and everyone was ignoring them, 'cept me. I went up to Sandman, who had a beer and a shot, and told him I was a huge fan and that I thought he was a a great songwriter. He turned to me with a Marlboro hanging from his mouth and said: "Well what are, some kinda expert or something?" I slunk away...
Avatar 2:23pm Joe B:

hey Mike!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:23pm mariano:

Love this Tough Age.
  2:24pm Victrola Tom:

@Gaylord: I’m not even surprised that you knew that obscure song. But did you know that the Four Kings became the Most and had an almost hit with Sea of Misery on Columbia? My bro sings lead on that one also!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:24pm Mike From Brooklyn:

@Mariano. Me too. Sounds like a cross between The Bats and Look Blue Go Purple.
Avatar 2:24pm Joe B:

never met sandman but did have dana colley (sp?) of morphine's previous group three colors play on my college radio show circa 1987
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:24pm Brian C.:

My favorite Silver Apples song!
Avatar 2:28pm Todd-o-phonic Todd:

@Victrola Tom: Hard to get one past Gaylord!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:28pm Gaylord Fields:

@Victrola Tom: I didn't know the two groups were one and the same! Your brother's got quite the pipes!
Avatar 2:28pm deborah:

Listening! So good....
  2:28pm Andres:

The drum opening to this Silver Apples somehow evocative of Walk Like A Man. Or maybe it was all the Four Seasons influencing that thought.
  2:30pm Paulie B:

Excellent show, Joe!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:30pm tim from champaign (now washington):

I gotta boogie so thanks for the awesome show, Joe!
Avatar 2:30pm Joe B:

thanks PB!
Avatar 2:30pm Joe B:

I introduced my brother in law to Silver Apples recently. It’s always a treat to see the look on people’s faces when you play them ‘Oscillations’ for the first time.
Avatar 2:31pm Joe B:

thanks deborah!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:31pm Gaylord Fields:

@Todd-o-phonic Todd: Thanks, I appreciate the compliment, especially if you're talking about dome hockey.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:31pm Krys O.:

I completely missed the Sopranos (no HBO at the time, but I did enjoy The Jersey Boys movie. Fun fact: They just wrapped filming location scenes for the Sopranos prequel movie in Bloomfield. The world famous Holsten's is in Bloomfield.
Avatar 2:31pm Joe B:

@andres - hmm never noticed that!
Avatar 2:32pm Joe B:

krys - glad you dug it - i thought it could have been a lot better
Avatar 2:34pm Todd-o-phonic Todd:

@Gaylord Fields: Interestingly enough, @Victrola Tom is still smarting from being swept at the same dome hockey game that I last played the host of this very radio show on. Ah, if only Mr. Big was still here all my games wouldn't be away games!
  2:34pm AD:

Lovin this drab city joe b. thanks for putting me onto new bands I like literally every week

  2:38pm Victrola Tom:

@Joe B: excellent show, thank you my friend!
  2:39pm David in London:

Krys, and young Kenny Everett, too. He was a well-known DJ here in the U.K., truly unhinged and great fun.

Kiki Dee? No Elton? ;p
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:41pm Michele with One "L":

Avatar 2:48pm pantz:

Matt Berry!
  2:48pm wfmu listener phillip:

great show Joe B! missed a little because my phones battery died
  2:48pm Gerry from Miami:

Wasn't that Kiki Dee single, "Love Makes the World Go Round" a hit for Deon Jackson back in the 60s? And I guess Elton John stole Ms. Dee from Motown for his own Rocket Records label and that big hit, "Don't Go Breakin' My Heart."
Avatar 2:49pm Todd-o-phonic Todd:

Matt Berry not sounding so much like Lee Hazlewood as much as giving off Hazlewood vibes.
Avatar 2:49pm Joe B:

gerry - yes it was a deon jackson cover. good call! meant to mention that
Avatar 2:50pm Joe B:

thanks ochre
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:50pm Krys O.:

@David in London: I watched Kenny Everett on TV here in the U.S. An independent NY based station aired it on Saturdays in the late 70s along with Doctor Who (Tom Baker).

Great show, Joe! Glad to be here with you and the fine folx of the Montebanks. Thanks for skeletonizing, Michele.

Be well, all.
  2:54pm David in London:

Krys, that was surely a terrific combo. Tom Baker remains a personal hero decades later. I was lucky enough to meet him once, and he was just as barking mad as I’d always hoped he’d be.

Joe, thanks for a great show today.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:54pm spodiodi:

Krys, Tom Baker is the best Dr. Who, imho. that scarf!
