"I listened yesterday. It's no reflection on you but I could'nt see where you were going or what you were going for. This early seventies thing did'nt get noticed the first time and you talk about friends of like Dealney and Bonnie who had records out like we're supposed to remember who they are. Then you play this long winded free jazz stuff that really grates on my nerves. And that noise without a beat and sounds like someones being pinched. Then you play a reggae song, I think you called it Dub, to what, be cool? You seem to really fetishize the whole folk thing too which is obnoxious to us who don't even care. I liked it when you played that punk song though. I like Joe Belock a lot." (Visit homepage.)

  9:01am Listener Bop Monroe:

greetings from Tannersville Mr JA!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:01am David (in London):

Afternoon JA and all groovers here assembled.
Avatar 9:02am John Allen:

hey MmmBop
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:02am terminalhipness:

Good morning!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:02am Strandlund:

Good Morning Mister Allen...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:02am YETI BOB:

gimme a J ... gimme an A ... gimme a couple of Zeds for our friends in the UK!
Avatar 9:02am Deborah:

Good Morning!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:03am Handy Haversack:

Morning, JA, J'All. In for the first hour before I have to yield the only surviving laptop to Kate -- let's get some ice cream jingles in before then!

Jazzafternoon, David! I owe you an e-mail, but access is tricky around here these few days.
  9:04am ?:

Hello DJ. Hello all. Hello.
  9:04am ami ad:

Hello there.
Avatar 9:04am John Allen:

hey everyone
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:05am David (in London):

Handy, no worries, I have been following your IT-based travails so I understand your predicament.

Count Yeti Bob, jazz greetings to you good sir.

Ami ad - Happy day my friend.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:05am PaulRobeson1920:

Warm greetings one and all. Gotta LoVe WFMU!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:05am sydnius:

Hello dirty reprobates
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:05am Krys O.:

Howdy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:05am Handy Haversack:

Morning, ami ad.

Apparently, I am yielding the keyboard now, but we'll be listening!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:06am WoodsOfNH:

Ah, Dirty might just be dislodging that Bobby Sherman earworm that Clay unleashed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:06am YETI BOB:

@Handy: I have a few old laptops lying around, I would gladly send you one but your new one will probably arrive first. I have a 15-year old van, but I get a new laptop every 2 years or so ... I need a good reliable fast machine for the work I do. TTYL!

@David: Nobody in Cook County believes I'm the Count. I need some sort of visible symbol. What does a Count wield?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:07am sydnius:

Numbers
  9:08am Listener Bop Monroe:

you dress with a cape, a monocle and go ah-ah-ah!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:08am David (in London):

Yeti Bob - He wields an air of unquestionable authority. Do some practise in front of the mirror. You're new at this, so it may take some time to really find your groove. Failing that, I'll send you an ID card.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09am -Ken:

MorningAllenites
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10am David (in London):

And BTW, I have an old (early 70s) Cook County Forest Police leather jacket. It's an absolute beauty. Lord knows how it ended up in a second hand shop in Hackney.

Oh, look busy, Staysh is here.
  9:11am ami ad:

@YETI BOB:Maybe a fancy pipe will do?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12am ratso:

I always get Count and Viscount confused. Which one wears a cape? (Although, I'm very familiar with Discounts.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12am YETI BOB:

Ok I'll do all of the above. Pipe. Monocle. Cackle. ID Card. Air of Authority. And I'll find an old jacket that says "Cook County" on it and I'll remove the 'Y'. That ought to do it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13am Woo:

clicky star for sparkle division
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13am -Ken:

There was a beautiful dense fog coming off the majestic Kitatinny Mountains this morning
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14am YETI BOB:

David told us there are no Counts in the UK. But apparently there are Viscounts. And an Earl's wife is a Countess.
  9:14am Morgan:

@woo i hearted that also
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14am David (in London):

Yeti Bob - See? Only two days in and you're already mastering it. You're a natural.
Avatar 9:26am sispus:

"drink, you're one of us" makes me cry. almost.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26am George of Troy:

Good morning John
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29am YETI BOB:

Bent Arcana is awesome. I'm waiting for the vinyl to show up in the mail.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31am YETI BOB:

Any record with Peter Kerlin on it is going to be good. Check out his underappreciated octet album "Salamander" some time. Vibraphones, violas, amazing sounds.
  9:32am terminalhipness:

Yeti - agreed! Just got Salamander
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33am PaulRobeson1920:

I had terminal hipness once and come to think of it, still do
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35am terminalhipness:

PaulRobeson1920 - once you're in, that's it...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35am Handy Haversack:

Yeti Bob, the Medieval Madness pinball game has a lot of good advice on the actions and speech habits of the peerage. I advise finding a table ASAP.

And thanks for the offer! spodiodi did the same. But these emergencies never arrive with time to spare for the generosity of friends!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37am -Ken:

really like this masma dream world
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43am ratso:

I had terminal velocity once. It stopped suddenly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43am PaulRobeson1920:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45am WoodsOfNH:

@ratso Physics dad jokes. Who knew!!
Avatar 9:47am Sketch:

My 1.5 year old son thought that masma dream world song was hilarious, he kept laughing and dancing.
  9:47am egould310:

JA if you see a cop, an Indian, and a sailor, you’ve got Village People surrounding your place.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48am Planet Tyler:

Wait, hold on. I just caught the tail end of that. What about Philadelphia? Some exhibit I have to see?
  9:48am Terr n DE:

Fun fact, if you say FCC as a word like NASA; say it like the last C is hard, and it has a U as the vowel
  9:48am ami ad:

Bed-Stuy is a poppin.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49am WoodsOfNH:

Saw Milford Graves a few years ago in the wilds of Peterborough, NH. Openers were Shahzad Ismaily and Mary Halvorson. Wow, what a night!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50am Handy Haversack:

Terr, you should call in and do it on the air!

ami: good poppin or cop poppin?

Thanks for the show, JA. Will put it on the bathroom boombox but have to yield the computer for the rest of the show -- Kate has a training to attend.

Later, JA'll!

@Woods: That sounds like an amazing show!! Three fantastic musicians in an out-of-the way venue, I love that sort of thing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40am WoodsOfNH:

@YETI BOB. Yes, for last ten years, a friend of mine has organized a terrific event called The Thing In The Spring. He's put together some amazing shows. I've seen Peter Brotzmann, Lonnie Holley, Trinary System, Tyondai Braxton, Bonnie Prince Billy, Iris Dement, William Parker, J Mascis, Thurston Moore. Really kind of an amazing thing he does out there.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57am Andrew_in_WI:

Does anybody subscribe to Bryce's newsletter? Will today be a raga Friday?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58am tim from champaign (now washington):

@Andrew - if it is not, JA can force Bryce's hand by ending his show with a raga. Once that first domino topples, there's no going back.
  10:58am Morgan:

ah we bought the Argument after hearing it on your show!

Nice comb playing
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08am karlward:

I didn't know Eric Clapton was on this track.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10am tim from champaign (now washington):

@karlward - oh yeah, Clapton Is God on the comb. It dates back to his pre-Bluesbusters skiffle days.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am Andrew_in_WI:

@Ken track down a comb combo for your talent show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13am karlward:

JA and Clay do a wicked comb combo, but they only cover Foreigner songs.
Avatar 11:14am John Allen:

speaking of Clapton, check out what's on his bookshelf

www.youtube.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14am Andrew_in_WI:

@karlwad I would pay to hear that, Foreigner or not.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20am YETI BOB:

(Was out watering my plants & enjoying some garden time, with WFMU coming out the window).
@Woods, that's a good kind of friend to have, a person who makes cool things happen.
@Handy, I'm on board for any learning opportunity that involves pinball!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21am YETI BOB:

and I think I need to get a copy of "Companion Rises"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am ratso:

@JA, that bookshelf talk is awesome. My takeaway was that England had a Traction Park too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27am tim from champaign (now washington):

Raga Friday! Raga Friday! Raga Friday!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28am tim from champaign (now washington):

@karlward - JA and Clay's band could be called The Combover Combo.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32am Andrew_in_WI:

@yeti I have over a dozen Chasny records... I find myself listening to the earlier stuff the most
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32am karlward:

Maybe I didn't want to learn about Clapton's psyche through his bookshelf, but here we are.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34am Yes:

william tyler has a new record?
  11:35am Morgan:

wish i could share some of this cake batter with everyone
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36am YETI BOB:

@Yes: Yes but digital-only I think.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38am YETI BOB:

@Andrew: (walking to shelf .. counting) I have 4, but that's because I sold a few - wasn't really listening to RTZ and I was running out of shelf space. Of the ones I have, I really like "Luminous Night" and "Asleep in the Flood Plain"
Avatar 11:38am John Allen:

karl, i mean, without that bookshelf to sum it up we'd all be wondering about those empty caverns
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38am -Ken:

Had to go to the NEU CD for a hot sec right there...
Avatar 11:39am Hubig Pie:

Neu! is the sound of stream hiccups
  11:39am ami ad:

how many kilos of ice cream has this track sold?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40am YETI BOB:

I love this track. Has anyone heard it coming from an ice cream truck yet? And did that truck hav a subwoofer?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40am terminalhipness:

"Neu! Ice Cream Truck"
Avatar 11:41am Hubig Pie:

With car alarm counterpoint
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41am Ike:

Did Terry Riley complain or is Riley just a Matt skeleton hiccup exclusive? (Seriously though, I presume Ken is the skeleton, so thanks Ken!)
  11:41am Dorothea Bozicolona-Volpe:

This ice cream truck noise sounds too much like Christmas music. It confuses me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42am Booz:

Gonna be rocking the RZA jingle all winter long
  11:42am Jon:

The bass line is the only thing that bothers me about this ice cream truck jingle. It’s like, out of tune, right?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44am YETI BOB:

@Hubig: Yesterday I listened to Godspeed for the first time in ages (Lift yr skinny fists) - at the end it fades out in this fantastic drone, and as it faded out I heard police sirens and helicopters from outside mixing in ... it was perfect, I think GY!BE would have appreciated it.
@Jon: I prefer to call it microtonal :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45am -Ken:

Yes the stream hiccup volume one consists of Neu, and Fela Kuti. Volume 2 has Terry Riley, Duck Hyman, and the I Feel Love MEGAMIX
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46am karlward:

Meredith Monk belongs in everything.
Avatar 11:47am Hubig Pie:

Will there be a stream hiccups premium available for a large pledge?

Oh I'm super-excited to see that Josh Johnson has an album out - his work with Jeff Parker was great and I hoped there'd be an album after he dropped that '856' single. This is exactly the kind of music I need to be listening to right now (my cats dig it too). This is the real 21st century JAZZ right here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:58am Andrew_in_WI:

@ja I'm putting my request in now for next week. Play some Grant Green
