The moon rippled in the pool of oil where I came to. My head felt like someone had buried the hatchet right dead center of my whiskey-soaked brain. Pistol-whipped for the third time tonight. That's what you get in this racket. As I peeled one eye open, I could make out the silhouette of the Empire State Building, inverted, like a dagger hanging over me. It was then that I realized I had to scrape myself off the pavement. McGasko would be on the air soon, and I had to get back to the office.

Mornin'! John beat me to it, but Kiss Me Deadly is NUTS. It's the source of the glowy-breifcase in Pulp Fiction, only here it's pretty clearly supposed to be an atomic bomb. Also Mike Hammer is unambiguously a psychopath in it.

Well, it wasn't part of an *organized* ant-gay campaign. But it sure looks homophobic and racist in hindsight. I was a teenage wannabe-punk and I also got on board with "Disco Sucks" - but I was young and naive and partly just following my peers. And TBH disco was just too ubiquitous and was getting over-marketed, we hated Zep and the Stones for the same reason. So I don't think everyone who says or said "Disco Sucks" is a racist homophobe. Nile Rodgers, producer and guitarist for the disco-era band Chic, likened the event to Nazi book burning. Gloria Gaynor, who had a huge disco hit with "I Will Survive", stated, "I've always believed it was an economic decision—an idea created by someone whose economic bottom line was being adversely affected by the popularity of disco music. So they got a mob mentality going." Harry Wayne Casey, singer for the disco act KC and the Sunshine Band, did not believe Disco Demolition Night was discriminatory, and felt that Dahl was simply an "idiot".

Catching up with this show from the archive...

Hearing that swingin' treatment of the Perry Mason theme reminds me: did you watch the new noir Tiny Toons Perry Mason on HBO? It was pretty good, definitely good enough to recommend.

Germane to this playlist, though – I really enjoyed it when licks from the original Perry Mason theme began peeking through into the music (I believe starting after our pal Perry began to get into lawyering). And there was a gritty swing to the tune.

More on Terence Blanchard's music for the HBO Perry Mason...

This post has excerpts from the whole set of soundtrack music.

The End Credits music undergoes transitions as the series progresses; in "End Credits - Perry Mason - Chapter 8" you hear the original show's theme now coming through unequivocally.
