Avatar 9:47am Joe McG:

I like the expression "feeling liverish"!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47am listener Rey:

Hiya Joe. That Pych doc sounds interesting at least. I watched "Go Go Mania" on TCM this weekend, a collection of 1964 Brit groups sandwiched between two Beatles live performances. Each song was lip-synched and introduced rather cheesily by Jimmy Saville (ugh!). It was pretty lame except for Spencer Davis Group and the Animals.
Avatar 9:49am Mike W:

grateful for these sounds this morning, Joe
Avatar 9:49am pantz:

Fuzzy guitar or scratchy recording?
Avatar 9:50am Joe McG:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50am YETI BOB:

Hi all. Totally slept through WAB and the first bit of Joe's show today. I guess it's the lack of sunbeams coming in my window at 6AM. @Pantz: why not both?
Avatar 9:52am pantz:

Good morning, a bit late, so I missed the soft music. Looks like I walked into a real rock ‘n’ roll shindig. I’m a bit suspect when I hear U2 on my phone. It looks like it was not pre-programmed so I’m calling it legit.

Salut Phillippe!
  10:12am Rick A.:

The St. Etienne compilation is kind of a WFMU smash hit. Trouble played a track from it and Stork, filling in for Pseu, played five or six tracks from it. I felt transported to L.A. in 1975. It was a freer time...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14am tim from champaign (now washington):

Other than streaming WFMU, I'm strictly physical format music listener. Numero Group's massive selection of digital reissues makes me reconsider my luddite ways.
  10:15am Dennis Diken:

yeah Joe!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am Mike Sin:

@tim from champaign (now washington) -- I'm in the same boat. What kills me is that Numero paid such fine detail to their physical releases. The packaging was incredible. They made physical products so worth buying!
Avatar 10:17am Joe McG:

@tim: I'm a little sad about it since I'm also a Luddite and their physical releases always looked so fabulous. Hey Dennis! @RickA: Wow, Pseu hit that one hard!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22am karlward:

I just got this premium in the mail on Saturday, it's gon get funky
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22am tim from champaign (now washington):

@Mike and Joe - I don't collect them all but there's quite a few Numero LPs in my collection. I think the next one I'm getting the is Tommy McGee collection. He's from Grand Rapids, MI where I grew up. I had no idea there was such a vibrant r&b scene when I lived there.
  10:22am Rick A.:

It was Stork, broadcasting from Germany. I think he played the Utopia song unknowingly though he acknowledged playing the other tracks. He talked about how impressed he is with the compilation. The St. Etienne compilation about the picnic in Central Park seems intriguing though I don't know most of the performers on it.
Avatar 10:22am Roberto:

Ooh I just got this one, EFD. Gotta get it into rotation. It took me a moment to figure out it's not a '60s comp and the "Number 6" reference is to the edition only :P

Pantz - that was David Koresh's last sentence: "Is it hot in here or am I going crazy?"

I'll never forget playing this Country Road cover at the record store I worked at, and a customer said "Boy, James Taylor must be rolling over in his grave!" We were all speechless.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25am efd:

@Joe That Blue Mink record was a white whale (so to speak) for me for quite a few years once I made that Toms-Mink connection. Finally found the single in California last year!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25am efd:

Love Single File!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38am tim from champaign (now washington):

I picked up Santana's Welcome over t he summer for the Alice Coltrane song on it. That song is unbelievably great. The rest of the album sounds like Santana was auditioning to the the house band on The Love Boat.
Avatar 10:42am Joe McG:

  10:46am Rick A.:

The previous song sounds like a combination of Satisfaction and Ides of March's "I'm Your vehicle".

Sadly, Matchbox 20 is more the norm for most people though after a year or two, the CDs wind up gathering dust in a basement somewhere. You can find them online for now for fifty cents or so if anyone wants to build their Matchbox library now.

  10:59am KWilde:

I ordered this single from an ad in Trouser Press
Avatar 11:00am Mike W:

Scienticians have known for years that Devo Was Right, but no one on earth knew they were *this* right
  11:00am Rick A.:

I was thinking used record stores would not buy back Matchbox 20 records though maybe anything to make money. I had this album in high school and one guy used to give me crap for liking Devo. I think history has proven me right.
  11:00am wfmu listener phillip:

the only Devo 45 single I had was "WHIP IT" It made the landlord at my old. building go crazy when i played it LOUD.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01am YETI BOB:

have not heard the yellow album in ages, but this can't be an Eno joint
Avatar 11:02am Roberto:

Can someone explain to me why "Booji Boy" is pronounced "Boogie Boy?"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02am David (in London):

That was a storming Single File.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02am sydnius:

Surface noise as advertised 5 stars
  11:03am wfmu listener phillip:

OMG Jocko Homo and no goat screaming in a warning.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03am YETI BOB:

@Roberto: The band ran out of "g"s (no joke)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03am tim from champaign (now washington):

@Yeti - Devo put a few singles out on Stiff that were pre-Eno. It's good! Have you heard t he Hardcore Devo albums of early to mid 70s? That stuff is NUTS!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03am Ken From Hyde Park:

The story of Mark Mothersbaugh's COVID-19 troubles: www.latimes.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06am YETI BOB:

@tim: Thanks, I haven't heard that album. I can believe it's good, I liked DEVO in the 70s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10am Hughie Considine:

Story songs have become increasingly rare on the charts. I know there are some out there from fairly recently -- "Stan" by Eminem comes to mind -- but since the '70s heyday, they've been scarce as radio hits.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10am tim from champaign (now washington):

Wow - my work just announced an emergency closure due to poor air quality. I've never ever experienced work closures due to snow and fire in the same year.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10am sydnius:

Frogs are next
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am Ken From Hyde Park:

Locusts!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12am David (in London):

Hughie, Stan is already twenty years old, so 'recent' is, ahem, a flexible definition.
Avatar 11:12am Joe McG:

@Hughie: Once "Angie Baby" came out, everyone put down tools. Done!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14am Hughie Considine:

Hey, David, I can count -- I said 'fairly'
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15am Ken From Hyde Park:

If Clay Pigeon can concoct "The Ballad of Konnie Klinkefus," the genre may stage a revival.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15am Hughie Considine:

Couldn't agree more, @Joe. But what an era.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16am listener Rey:

I'll bet story songs are still popular in contemporary Country, but I'm not willing to listen to any of it to find out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16am YETI BOB:

story songs live on in hip-hop as well
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18am Brian in UK:

That Porter W was on a par with his 'Rubber Room'.
Avatar 11:18am Mike W:

Stream go down for anyone else? I flipped back to lightly surface-noisey 91.9-FM (lucky to live in NYC for this)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18am Hughie Considine:

They definitely live on in various genres -- just seems that story songs used to be hits, almost as if people had more time to listen to lyrics and stories in the pre-digital world. Pure conjecture here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18am tim from champaign (now washington):

@Brian in UK - Rubber Room is no joke!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19am YETI BOB:

I thought we were going to hear Jean Shepherd tell a story ...
  11:19am David in London:

Hughie, that was intended more as a comment on my advancing years than on your (unquestioned) numerical prowess!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19am tim from champaign (now washington):

Waldo the Weirdo is a good another good Porter story song.
  11:20am Kagi:

Story songs: hell, there's the Hold Steady. Not much more recent than Eminem, though. Plus, I don't really like him/them much.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20am Jason from Houston:

OH NOOOOOOOO
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20am Handy Haversack:

Stream OK in my radio-less front room in North Brooklyn, Mike W.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20am Jason from Houston:

Roll me into a casket of tears...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21am Hughie Considine:

I get it, @David. And thank you for complimenting my numerical prowess! I actually wrote a book on number songs (and was on Joe's show talking about it years ago) so that felt good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21am YETI BOB:

There are also seem to a lot fewer songs about fatal car crashes ... that seemed to be a genre at some point. "Fairchild" is a story song, a car crash song, a "you done me wrong song", and a "I'm gonna kill my woman" song. Quite a Venn Diagram there.
Avatar 11:21am Joe McG:

@Jason: I watched an old Townes Van Zandt Austin City Limits tribute episode yesterday and seeing tears streaming down Nanci's face during Steve Earle's "Fort Worth Blues" moved me.
  11:22am David in London:

Hughie, really? Cool. Can you direct me to the relevant archive?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22am Jason from Houston:

Oh yes... I know that clip well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22am Brian in UK:

Did Townes have some bad jokes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22am YETI BOB:

@Hughie: I'm also super-interested in a book about number songs!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22am Carmichael:

Avatar 11:26am Joe B:

wow nice, don't think I've ever listened to HH singing his own tunes
  11:26am Rick A.:

Father John Misty is good for story songs though I'm not sure how much records he sells. His "I am Writing a Novel" is a funny story song.
Avatar 11:27am Joe McG:

@JoeB: This LP is all him singing the hits plus some good story songs!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29am Handy Haversack:

"Than *thou*."
Avatar 11:30am deborah:

"Caroline" in Story Corner reminded me of the song"Louise," done by Pearls Before Swine. Loved that group.
  11:30am David in London:

Thanks Hughie, I will give that an ear.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31am Hughie Considine:

@Yeti Bob, regarding car crash songs, "Death Discs: An Account of Fatality in the Popular Song" by Alan Clayson goes deep on this subject.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31am YETI BOB:

@Hughie: Thanks! You really know your stuff.
  11:32am wfmu listener phillip:

how about "warm leatherette" by the normal.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33am BNowB on the BMX:

Amazing show; as always Joe McG.
Thank you!

this is pretty wild for 1963!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34am Hughie Considine:

Thanks, @Yeti. I have an extremely limited sphere of deep knowledge, but it's good to have a focus.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34am YETI BOB:

@Bop: Judy Henske was "Queen of the Beatniks".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34am spodiodi:

good morning, Joe!

  11:37am Listener Bop Monroe:

after all, isn't everything pre-1900 Barb'ry Allen?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37am Barney Grubbs:

@yeti bob: Wreck on the Highway (Acuff & many others) is a classic, and maybe Deadman's Curve (Jan & Dean) might count too?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38am Carmichael:

I remember this as The Raggle Taggle Gypsy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39am Carmichael:

Wreck of the Ol' 97, also a numbers song.
Avatar 11:39am Joe McG:

@Carm: Oh, you know these Child ballads, they have 8 billion names.
Avatar 11:40am Hubig Pie:

I might be wrong but I think Neko Case's Deep Red Bells is about highway death
Avatar 11:40am Mike W:

@Roberto
Dig into her album “High Flying Bird” (1964) and, depending on your feelings on these things, her 1969 album with then-husband Jerry Yester of the Lovin’ Spoonful...who in the past few years was busted for possession/distribution of child pornography.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41am YETI BOB:

@Carmicheal: That's a good one, but I think the "Ol' 97" was a train. "Wreck of the Olds 88" would be a good car-crash-and-numbers song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41am Brian in UK:

Hello Carmichael, The Raggle Taggle Gypsy is the first of the Roud songs. Continental Subway plays four/five versions of each one every week on the Drummer Stream.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41am efd:

when I was in high school my step-father took me to a very traditional/old school barbershop in Harvard Square. After the haircut was completed the barber proudly stated, "when you came in here you looked like the Wild Man from Borneo. I fix you up now, you look nice."

I did not share that opinion.
Avatar 11:41am Mike W:

oops, the above-referenced Henske/Yester album is called “Farewell Aldebaran”

Ooops sorry *Carmichael.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44am nortonjutland:

you've done it again Joe! thanks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45am Brian in UK:

That's two songs from Randy's first album. Do you think it's going to rain today!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45am Webhamster Henry:

Freak Show by the Residents would be extra credit in this set.
  11:46am wfmu listener phillip:

I could not have long hair as a teen. off to the barber to get it cut if it grew an inch longer
  11:47am wfmu listener phillip:

I'm 53 now still have hair on my head. but I prefer the Kojak look
  11:47am David in London:

Hey spodiodi.

Frank’s Wild Years is a top notch story song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48am The Oscar:

Loving this set-- it's like a sequel to your carnival ride show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49am spodiodi:

hi David!
Avatar 11:49am Joe McG:

@Oscar: I never got around to these carnival/freak show songs, so now's the time, as summer ends...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49am Kotzwinkled:

"Eyeball Kid" would fit right in!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49am Carmichael:

Me Da would take my brother and me to a traditional place, where we received 3 identical Devo-style haircuts. Couldn't wait to grow out my hair.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49am efd:

@spodiodi your interpretation is correct.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49am Brian in UK:

Good work, Mr McGasko.
Avatar 11:49am Joe McG:

Wow, a lot of Residents fans in the house!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50am Ike:

Was Bruce accidentally channeling a (future) splash of Tom Waits?!?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50am Carmichael:

@Brian, I listen to David Dichelle faithfully. But I think his time moved. I'll have to find him again.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51am Handy Haversack:

Agreed, David. Is "Papa Won't Leave You, Henry" a story song?

Hey, spod.
  11:51am wfmu listener phillip:

in our house we called it the Jimmy Connors Haircut. I was a big tennis fan as a kid.

I saw mellencamp in 1985- was a pretty amazing show. no opener, two long sets, tons of cool covers (let it all hang out by the hombres, psychotic reaction etc)
Avatar 11:54am Roberto:

U2? John C. Mellencamp? I must be listening to Joe McGasko's show.
