Today they get the "set up" for Islam. I am trying to get them to not think about things in terms of civilizational blocs which I find dated. So, my intro course (world history 1500-present) starts well before that so they get this intro to world history, then they get a brief rundown of rome/cin china/Islam. Next week its mongols, and then they finally get to what they signed up for 1500 to the present.

Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:37pm
Cmurtha:

I don't drink so I should not comment, but it is becoming in vogue to be a hipster about beer, just like it was in vogue for a while to be a hipster about whisky. That coupled with the explosion of micro-breweries has led to a lot of chasing after niches/new experiences. Not bad thing if one likes to drink, but I am sure one can find most types of beer in the states at the present moment if they look..
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:38pm
Cmurtha:

The one that has been confounding me lately is I have seen the kids here buying this turkish beer, which, I have always been told is like the pabst blue ribbon of European beers, bought only because it is cheap, but its not cheap here. Confusing stuff.
Avatar 🚂 12:38pm
spodiodi:

Cmurtha, beer hipsters have been around since before the whisky hipsters.... this would be the second wave of beer hipsters, imho
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:39pm
David Dichelle:

Yes, and in return some non-traditional varieties are finding their way into German supermarkets as well - IPA and the like - which used to be relatively hard to find in these parts.
Avatar 🚂 12:39pm
βrian:

In the '80s, Rolling Rock was the hipster beer. Bleh.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:40pm
Cmurtha:

I'll take your word for it. Maybe I just see it more since I befriended some beer hipsters, and then I moved to Ohio from the NYC, there are so many micro-breweries and major breweries out here.
Avatar 🚂 12:41pm
spodiodi:

the Cmurtha, re: turkish beer as pabst -- same holds true for german beers for sale in the us -- or did. most germans make faces at those which were popular/mainstreamish in the us
Avatar 🚂 12:42pm
spodiodi:

it seems to me that Sierra Nevada sort of led the charge East with microbrews getting popular (with red hook and fat tire following close behind?)

Avatar 🚂 12:46pm
spodiodi:

a couple of my friends were from the former east, and we drank a lot of beer together... never heard of Gose! (i want answers! (from them )) ;)
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:46pm
Handy Haversack:

Well, we had Sam Adams out East for a long time, spod. But yeah, Sierra Nevada was one of the early ones.

The USFDA definition of a "craft" brewery, as I recall, is under 3 million barrels/year -- so that's pretty freaking big.

But anything even vaguely craft in NYC is so insanely expensive that I tend to stick with PBR and then get nice ciders or the occasional gose or something.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:47pm
Cmurtha:

There is a great book on nationalism related to Budwiese. The beer is not integral to it, but it does come up. I can't recall its exact title. But, its all about how Budwiese identified itself since it was part of the Austro-Hungarian empire, and it had this interesting divide between Czech, German, and other ethnic groups. It varied from identifying a German or another group, and now it exists in the Czech republic. The Budwieser plant out here though assures its drinkers that its all american, and very, very deeply into premoting American nationalism in its ads. Wacky stuff.

The Czech Budweiser/Budvar is actually a fine brew - preferably fresh from the tap in a Czech pub.
Avatar 🚂 12:51pm
spodiodi:

one of my favorite moments in one of my favorite bars, was created by my good german physics/computer/motorcycle friend, who, when offered some beer from my locally brewed american pitcher of beer, took a sip and uttered "zis iz naht beer. zis is american piss"
Avatar 🚂 12:52pm
βrian:

To me, the craft beer movement kind of tailed off by the end of the 90s. After that, everything became niche and extreme.

It's interesting that the macro-brewers could brew really good beer if the wanted to. They're good at what they do.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:52pm

i would really, really enjoy a pint pulled from a tap in a Czech pub right now... goddamn that would be nice.

At some point, and I think it was the West Coast brewers here, the goal seemed to suddenly become seeing how much hops you could cram into a beer and call it an IPA.

Handy, current hops craze has gone beyond super-hopped IPAs (i.e DIPA, etc) to the idea of blending several hops species to deliver flavor profiles of citrus, pine, etc. then there's the hazy's which are unfiltered. so, hops mania still underway, but perhaps... evolving?

Maybe so, Chris. I used to brew an English-style IPA that I really liked a lot. It's hop profile was so small compared to most of the U.S. craft brews!

Hotsie motsie, I could sure go for a pint of 80/- right now.

I can't speak to London, but Edinburgh (and much of Scotland) have a pretty great "real ales" culture. Even that has certain distributor-controlled major players. But there are lots of pubs with really great ales, even if just a couple of them.

chresti, I'm certainly not going to tell anyone *else* to slow down!

David, yes! It's not an app, just a site that a fellow built (I think Kickstartered originally). It's free and uses "fake money" -- just chips, you know. It does not have too many bells and whistles (no persistent memory of your hands and history, an indecipherable log, no connection to the analysis apps like you'd get on the pay sites). But also no membership, no login, no spying.

He's integrating JITSI as a video platform, but we have been using a separate Zoom window for talking.

And then we just settle up later.

white liquor is the easiest, fastest way to turn a profit in the distilling arena. vodka, gin don't need aging. just a good mash and a solid still run. haven't done gin, but imagine a second run with added botanicals and the like. still pretty fast to market.

Brian in UK:

Microbrewers are regional so you might go somewhere and drink then maybe not see it again. Forty five years ago there were independent brewers and the big six nationals make poor quality beer in the main. Only a handful of what is now called microbrewers then, those brewing in the pub and selling it there. There is one near us called the Thee Tuns has been brewing since the late Seventeenth century. We made a pilgrimage there in 1977. Still tastes good.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:11pm

Thee Tuns on the list! thanks, Brian.

Chris you are supposed to have a license to distill or be a biochemist over here.

Do I gather that you are coming over here at some time.

Brian, do you like Timothy Taylor's Landlord? Is it prevalent at all?
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:16pm

Handy, you bet, a pint of Timmy Taylors works wonders. Mainly in the north of England.

David, the micro-distillery I do some work for make marc as well from the Geisenheim grape. Wineries here let the distillery have their must and we do the rest.

Sem: Are ice wines also a thing in the area?
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:42pm

Yes, and have been for a few decades. The wine industry here really started with German and Swiss vintners, so they experimented w/ some success in that area.

Handy Haversack:

I am sure I mentioned on some board, but where I work will be publishing a book on whether there is terroir in whiskey/whisky as there is in wine (spoiler alert: yes, but it's harder to obtain) -- and how it might be cultivated. Should be out in November. I was really hoping we'd be able to have book-launch events by the time it came out, dang it.

Sorry, late again. David, you need to put another sign up. Newspapers and burger wrappers on the floor, a bum sleeping on one of the seats, and one of Handy's empty absinthe bottle by the conductor's door. These damn covid compromises are getting too much!

Other than that, hey, how is everybody?
