Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:08pm Doug Schulkind:

Just a teensy, bump, Brian in UK? Maybe just a tincture of grind?

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:32pm northguineahills:

As said yesterday, this is assinine (literally pertaining or reffering to donkeys...) Sorry, always the etymological geek...
Avatar 3:34pm Bas NL:

Should never have given my mirror ball away.. totally cool.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:36pm Doug Schulkind:

Those flashing Bump Your Ass Off signs were from a real place. The El Dorado bumper car concession at Coney Island, Brooklyn. Inside the place blasted disco music at a so-loud-it-hurts volume (hurts so good), and outside on a loud-speaker system, a funky tape-loop played over and over and over a voice intoning, BUMP, BUMP, BUMP, YER ASS OFF! BUMP YER ASS OFF!!!"

The music I used to talk over at the beginning of the show is an homage to that scene.
Avatar 3:36pm Marc Francis:

♥ ♥ ♥
Avatar 3:37pm Marc Francis:

Who knew that DISCO would be the perfect music for rebuilding an awning to?!?!?!?!
Avatar 3:37pm Marc Francis:

I know it's great for so much else... but now I can add that to the list.
Avatar 3:38pm Bas NL:

I've killed amplifiers with disco.. ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:39pm Doug Schulkind:

Build that awning, Ba-by!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:41pm holland oats:

I believe that "out the door" snippet's been sampled here and there!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:45pm listener james from westwood:

(Samantha Fox among 'em IIRC)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:46pm Doug Schulkind:

Yes indeed, listener james in westwood. My search on the YTube for just such a snippet is what lead me to discover P. Leone's "El Dorado (Bump Yo Ass Off Mix)"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:49pm Doug Schulkind:

Every one of the 18 Drummer Stream Discotheque shows has been archived and is accessible at this page: wfmu.org...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:06pm Little Danny:

C'mon now get it together Doug.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:06pm Little Danny:

This is a bassline creamsicle.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:07pm Funky16Corners:

I like the keyboards on this one
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:07pm Doug Schulkind:

@Hopey Sockmonkey
When this program began, it was simply a response to the craziness of the COVID-19 situation. The world has turned further upside down since then.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:09pm Michael 98145:

the magnetic poles might be shifting next. cripes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:09pm Doug Schulkind:

@Little Danny
Tongues are permitted. Encouraged even! Just wipe of your screen before closing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:10pm Doug Schulkind:

Speaking of the polls, Michael 98145. Jesus Fucking Christ, people, VOTE!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:11pm Funky16Corners:

Vote early, vote often.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:12pm Doug Schulkind:

All the African trax in this set comes from Nigeria, Ghana, and Cameroon. (Apologies to Nigeria and Ghana, but nobody can touch Cameroon on the disco scene. No bah dee!)
Avatar 4:13pm Bas NL:

Fantastic track this!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:14pm Funky16Corners:

Home of the mighty Manu Dibango!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:17pm Doug Schulkind:

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you Nana Love.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:17pm Funky16Corners:

I had a Nana. She didn't sound like this, though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:17pm Doug Schulkind:

@Funky16Corners
Manu is coming soon (with the obvious and necessary selection).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:18pm Little Danny:

Seamless segue.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:20pm Funky16Corners:

Africa never stops giving up musical wonderfulness
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:21pm Doug Schulkind:

My segues are hermitically sealed, Little Danny. I hire only the best hermits to seal them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:27pm Funky16Corners:

AWWWWWW YEAH.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:28pm Doug Schulkind:

Manu Dibango, sadly a covid casualty.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:28pm Funky16Corners:

Yeah, one of the earliest celebs that I can recall
Avatar 4:30pm Listener Gregory:

I’m back! And bigger than ever before!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:31pm Doug Schulkind:

Welcome back, Larger Gregory!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:39pm Little Danny:

I wonder what if any African tracks found their way to David Mancuso besides "Soul Makossa." All of these are such Loft-ready jams.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:41pm Funky16Corners:

@Danny - What was the controversy last night about James K Nine?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:42pm Doug Schulkind:

For sure, Little Danny. I "Ashewo Ara" by Kabbala must have.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:42pm Doug Schulkind:

Buari's "Karam Bani" did, I'd like to think.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:43pm Little Danny:

@Larry: Haha, no controversy. When I back announced it I attributed it to James K-Nine.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:44pm Funky16Corners:

Ah, it's def Bo on Live It Up. He told me that someone else was singing on the flip.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:45pm Little Danny:

I bet you're right, Doug. I think they both got UK or US pressings in their day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:46pm Little Danny:

@Larry: Matt gets needlessly serious about information sometimes. And sometimes he's just wrong.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:49pm Funky16Corners:

@Doug - Were most of these Afro tracks recorded in Africa, or elsewhere ?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:50pm Doug Schulkind:

I would guess about half were recorded in Paris.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:51pm Funky16Corners:

Aha!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:53pm Doug Schulkind:

The Cameroonian tracks almost certainly (Pasteur Lappé, Manu Dibango, J.M. Time & Foty, Momo Joseph)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:55pm Funky16Corners:

I'm always fascinated by the effects of the colonial experience in Africa, but all over the world as well, as it pertains to music. Many of these artists are native French speakers (you get some Asian input in Dutch rock and pop coming from Surinam and Indonesia).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:56pm Funky16Corners:

Not that Surinam is in Asia, but colonial Dutch outpost
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:59pm Little Danny:

With with you there Larry. The pockets of influence and immigrant musical culture that have flourished in adopted homelands is also fascinating. Like Cape Verdean music in Massachusetts.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:59pm Funky16Corners:

Moving the show to my phone (gotta go upstairs and feed the other Grogans)
  5:01pm Funky16Corners:

@Danny - The Cape Verdian thing is wild. I had no idea. Horace Silver, Paul Gonsalves and I’m sure many others
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:02pm Little Danny:

Yeah, and it subtly filtered into jazz, especially via Silver!
Avatar 5:05pm burke:

Joyeux anniversaire, Patsy
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:07pm Doug Schulkind:

burke to the rescue!
Avatar 5:08pm Listener Gregory:

Doug, if the election goes badly, you might have to bring back the dance party for us to listen to as we cower in our burned-out basements planning our next action once night falls.
Avatar 5:08pm Listener Gregory:

Trying to look on the bright side.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:13pm Doug Schulkind:

@Listener Gregory
Don't harsh my mellow.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:14pm Doug Schulkind:

Some Summer/Moroder action going here with Usha Uthup (and composer Bappi Lahiri).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:17pm Doug Schulkind:

Love to love you, baby.
Avatar 5:18pm Bas NL:

Bappi Lahiri's awesome!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:18pm WR:

I have 30 minutes to party like mad and the back to the back office. Waving my hands in the air like I just don't care.
Avatar 5:19pm Listener Gregory:

I am fully able to not care without any apparent motion. It’s a gift!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:23pm Doug Schulkind:

I second that non-motion, LG.
  5:24pm Funky16Corners:

Candido!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:27pm Doug Schulkind:

@Funky16Corners
I could've just done four hours of Salsoul!
  5:29pm Funky16Corners:

And Salsoul Orchestra in the offing?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:31pm Doug Schulkind:

@F16C
Not this time around. I played the "Magic Bird of Fire" on my first disco show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:33pm WR:

Like the GIF of all the party posters. Lovely series.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:35pm Doug Schulkind:

Our beloved Funky16Corners (Larry Grogan) is the poster-maker!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:35pm Michael 98145:

very nice indeed
  5:36pm Funky16Corners:

@Doug - I have a Salsoul Orch album with a couple of nice Richard Evans/Soulful Strings covers
Avatar 5:36pm Bas NL:

Great job F16C!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:37pm Jeff Golick:

Yeah, big ups to Larry for the graphic awesomeness, lo these many weeks.
  5:39pm Funky16Corners:

Thanks guys! I had fun doing the posters.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:41pm Little Danny:

Five more hours please Doug.
  5:42pm otto:

Nice to know who did 'em! Love the posters!
  5:42pm Mark R:

This Dinosaur track is really cool--very trippy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:42pm Doug Schulkind:

@Little Danny
If I didn't have to walk the dog, I'd be all over it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:44pm Doug Schulkind:

That would be so 2020, Mark R. To get attacked by a tripping dinosaur. Mothra on acid.
  5:45pm Mark R:

Or he might just sit quietly, admiring his wings.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:45pm Little Danny:

Dog walks are what extended 12" mixes are for!
  5:48pm Funky16Corners:

Doug, is your copy of Candido a 45 or 12”?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:49pm Doug Schulkind:

It's an MP3 of the 12".
  5:51pm Funky16Corners:

Ah, cool. I have the 45. I try to grab as much disco on 45 as I can.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:52pm Doug Schulkind:

I grab everything within reach.
  5:52pm Mark R:

I prefer the 12" medium, because the larger groove area enables the needle to capture more information, leading to that thumpin' bass sound we all crave so dearly.
Avatar 5:52pm Bas NL:

Ain't no town like Motown!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:53pm Doug Schulkind:

A Morales and Munzibai mix!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:53pm Little Danny:

@Mark: heck, I don't think any format sounds better loud than a good 12".
  5:54pm Mark R:

I think it can be empirically proven, Danny.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:54pm Doug Schulkind:

Notown!
Avatar 5:55pm Bas NL:

Flipping fantastic!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:57pm Doug Schulkind:

I could play this slice of wax for four hours. (Don't tempt me.)
  5:57pm Funky16Corners:

I dig it for the curiosity value, satisfying my own sick 45 fetish, and sometimes you get lucky. I have a Papa John Creach 45 (“Joyce”, Tom Moulton mix) where the 12” is a 100 dollar pull, and the 45 (with the identical mix/edit) is less than 10 bucks
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:58pm Doug Schulkind:

"My own sick 45 fetish."

!
  5:59pm Funky16Corners:

I need help. Just ask my wife.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:59pm Little Danny:

I feel your pain Larry.
  5:59pm Funky16Corners:

BTW This Tata Vega is heat!
Avatar 6:00pm Bas NL:

Hey!!! I got this Bohannon on 12''!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:03pm listener Rey:

fantastic show, Doug. I had to listen quietly while working today, but I'll be playing this show off the archive this weekend at appropriate disco levels.
Avatar 6:04pm Listener Gregory:

Would like to enjoy the show, but I am distracted by shouting at squirrels.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:04pm Doug Schulkind:

You've been with me all damn day, listener Rey!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:04pm Little Danny:

Is this the most you've DJed in one day, Doug?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:05pm Doug Schulkind:

@Listener Gregory
In my neighborhood (Squirrel Hill), you be shouting, "Get off my lawn!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:05pm Little Danny:

I'm exhausted after two hours of my own nonsense.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:06pm Doug Schulkind:

@Little Danny
I think I went longer when I took over for WFMU back during Hurricane Sandy. And that was done consecutively.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:06pm listener Rey:

Yes And I'm finally able to crank it up
  6:06pm Funky16Corners:

I’m ok with the occasional 3-hour show but two hours is my sweet spot.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:07pm listener james from westwood:

Hanging in happily through the dinner hour!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:09pm Little Danny:

@Doug: Hurricane Sandy fill-in sounds like a lot of adrenaline.
Avatar 6:10pm Listener Gregory:

When I sit on my deck reading the paper, squirrels come on it as if I’m not even there! I never feed them. Can’t understand their impudence.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:10pm Doug Schulkind:

@ljfw
Hanging out with you is a pleasure.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:12pm Doug Schulkind:

I have to end at 7pm (ET) or the string section starts getting time and a half.

David Charles L'Heureux
Avatar 6:14pm Bas NL:

Let's shower the strings section with tips!
  6:14pm spaniel:

Doug, this is getting me through a big cleaning/fixing day at a house we just moved out of, thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:16pm Doug Schulkind:

The pleasure's mine, spaniel!
Avatar 6:18pm Bas NL:

You got ME running.... this is great!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:20pm Doug Schulkind:

I haven't taken my headphones off for three and half hours. I don't need to wear them when I'm not talking on mic, but. I. Want. To.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:25pm Little Danny:

How big is your hair these days Doug?
Avatar 6:25pm Bas NL:

Headphone works best on the brain dance nodules i think! Just lacks a bit of body vibe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:27pm Doug Schulkind:

@Little Danny
My daughter gave me cut before dashing off to college. She did a fine job. Better than the ones I pay for from my rightwing barber who has Fox Snooze on all the damn time.

Arright, so after the disco closes, we're goin' to the diner out on on Astoria Boulevard, get an English muffin, some cawfee, then I gotta change shirts and get back into Manha'an by nine. Who's okay to drive?
  6:48pm Mark R:

Not to be confused with Archie Shepp's "The Magic of JuJu"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:49pm Doug Schulkind:

The magnificent Lady Eka-Ete singing with Oneness of Juju. One of my fave tracks of all time. Not exactly disco, but a nice mellow denouement.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:50pm Doug Schulkind:

That's a short story right there, listener james.
Avatar 6:50pm Listener Gregory:

Sense definite human drumming here. Nice! And tasty soprano sax too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:51pm Doug Schulkind:

Never enough juju, Mark R.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:53pm Doug Schulkind:

On saxophone: a gentleman named Plunky.
