Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

Barry!
Avatar 🛒 Swag For Life Member 12:19pm Barry P.:

Dan and Dean, big Gentle Giant fan here. Discovering them almost 30 years ago was my one of my greatest musical thrills.
  12:21pm dan:

@Barry P.
All you need to know about Gentle Giant's greatness is the live performance of "On Reflection" where the band starts out doing chamber music and then quickly get back to the guitars and rock it out.
  12:22pm Dean:

Had the good fortune to see them, but only once and at a day-long festival at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, where they opened for Gary Wright, Peter Frampton, and Yes, 1976, I believe. Think I first heard them shortly after In a Glass House, still my favorite of their albums.
Avatar 12:22pm Roberto:

Actually, there's nothing saying a giant can't be female, so circumcision might not be the best indicator. Not to mention the many, many circumcised goyim out there.
Avatar 🛒 Swag For Life Member 12:23pm Barry P.:

@Dan, agreed, like the version on Playing the Fool.
  12:24pm dan:

@Barry P
On the record, the rock part precedes the chamber music.

Avatar 🛒 Swag For Life Member 12:39pm Alvy Singer:

Thanks for the Hard Bop of Horace Silver.
  12:39pm Dean:

First Triumvirat track I heard was *not* from Illusions on a Double Dimple. Was from Mediterranean Tales. But here's the thing, Triumvirat was kinda more like ersatz progressive rock, where Gentle Giant were forging their own path--inspired by their affection for Renaissance and medieval music, the influence of which is what I think put off a lot of listeners from the get-go--independent of Yes, ELP, Pink Floyd, etc. As noted above, they were extremely talented musicians, but devoted to a different kind of virtuosity than the superstars. Yet it was a virtuosity of sorts. Take "Knots," the vocal round. Sure, it's showing off, but it's also kinda charming.

I was already seeing Chilliwack on my playlist when I got here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29pm Uncle Michael:

I thought it was the soft rock...this is sort of take and bake Bread.
  1:29pm Dean:

Year of issue was probably 1981 or '82, judging from release numbers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29pm Uncle Michael:

Thank you, Dean...very much.

you're on fire Uncle Michael!

Avatar 🛒 Swag For Life Member 1:34pm northguineahills:

soft rock, so.... molten?
  1:34pm Dean:

"Fat Mattress never really caught fire." Heh.
  1:36pm Dean:

I like to think we all have burning mattress stories.
  1:36pm dan:

The riff sounds like "Jet Airliner".

I was more pyroidiot that pyromaniac.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:48pm Uncle Michael:

Lizzie, these guys were kind of chameleon-like.
  1:55pm dan:

Fleetwood Mac has had many chapters, but no one seems to acknowledge the brief lineup in 1994 where Bekka Brammlett, Dave Mason and Billy Burnette were front and center.
Avatar 🛒 Swag For Life Member 1:56pm Alvy Singer:

Thanks for playing the Bob Welch era Fleetwood Mac Uncle Michael.
  1:58pm dan:

The Hall of Fame did a disservice by not inducting Bob Welch along with the other members.
Avatar 🛒 Swag For Life Member 2:00pm Alvy Singer:

Sentimental Lady was on Bare Trees. One of Bob Welch's finest songs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:02pm Uncle Michael:

The hit version was a different recording, from 1977...but you know that.
  2:03pm dan:

@Alvy
The original version on the Bare Trees album is better. Christine McVie's harmony vocal is the icing on the cake.

Good golly, I thought that Sanford-Townsend Band was someone else, but I can't think of who I thought it was. But it REALLY sounded like that other person/band.
Avatar 🛒 Swag For Life Member 2:26pm Rich in Washington:

Do we have enough fans for the shit being flinged at them?
  2:27pm Dean:

Sucks today, worse than yesterday. But then for Berkeley it's just air quality. Up north it's another depth of horror story.

Had the same experience, Doug. Was thinking England Dan & John Ford Coley, maybe?
  2:27pm dan:

@Doug
Was it Siegel–Schwall Band?

Billy Swan - "I Can Help" is a fake Ringo song to me.

Dean! Stan told me a couple of years after he left Wall Of Voodoo, he heard from a third party that a former associate had been impersonating him on the phone for the purpose of punking other bands. So it's a good thing you were to busy feeding the gold fish and didn't drag all your gear down to the Hong Kong Cafe that night, You say there's a flyer?

  2:41pm Dean:

Thanks, Franco! That possibility crossed my mind. Indeed, the flyer is oddly minimalist, a half-sheet of paper with the three band names, the venue, and maybe admission price. But then there's this ad: https://rocktourdatabase.com/sites/rocktourdatabase.com/files/1979-09-06hongkong_0.JPG
