Hi Krys. Was out of town for a while, with a Wi-Fi signal that really couldn't handle any streaming. But I'm back now and twice as yippy. How's yourself?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:05am Pale Son:

Aha! Was expecting to hear this one last week.

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:05am Yes:

  9:05am TimBk:

Morning Joe, I think Making Movies outside of the horrible Les Boys is a perfect album. I wore this one out back in the day.
Avatar 9:06am Roberto:

This whole album shreds.
Avatar 9:06am Jennica:

Good morn' everyone. Peace to all.
  9:07am Colleen:

Looking forward to the show Joe!!
  9:08am pp:

Dire Straits only reminds me of disappearing free-form radio stations of the 1970's who would then play this kind of stuff to death. imho
Avatar 9:08am Jennica:

The interlude sounds like Peter Blegvad.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:08am David (in London):

Hey TDK, Jennica, Colleen.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:09am Tim 07030:

Good morning, Joe! If this is 'Tunnel of Love', please tell me I'm in a dorm room in Providence in the early 80s...
Avatar 9:10am Joe McG:

Hey everybody! Picking up where we left off last week and then moving on! @TimBk: Agree, "Les Boys" is such homophobic shit that I have to shut the album off before it gets there. Up to there, wonderbar!
Avatar 9:11am Jennica:

Big air hugs from me to you, David (iL)!
Avatar 9:12am Roberto:

Les Boys is homophobic? I guess I need to give it another listen (then maybe never another one after that).

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:15am LastWhiteRhino:

Joe............................Hello.
  9:16am foreign_listener_k:

Les Boys is pretty bad, and the typical British anti-German slant might be a bit harder to pick up on
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:16am Krys O.:

Here's an interesting interview with Knopfler: members.tripod.com...
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:17am Handy Haversack:

Good morning, Joe and all! Glad we're back at the bemusement park!
  9:18am Bill W:

Knopfler gets a lifetime pass from me for the LOCAL HERO score.
Avatar 9:19am Joe McG:

@Krys/Robero: Ah, I see, he was writing from the point of view of a character. I wasn't giving him enough credit. I let Randy Newman get away with that all the time and I forget that Knopfler does it, too ("Money for Nothing").
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:19am YETI BOB:

People listen to Dire Straits voluntarily?
Avatar 9:21am Joe McG:

@Yeti: Ha ha ha!
  9:21am Buddha of Suburbia:

Hi Joe McGasko!! Hello gang!!
  9:21am Rick A.:

Joe, you are falling into my 90s with the Belle and Sebastian and S.F. Seals. I still listen to Truth Walks in Sleepy Shadows. Manning's voice is very sweet. The Greasy Kid's Stuff crew used to play "Kids' Pirate Ship" quite often. Kathy McCarty would go well among these songs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22am Greg from ZONE 5:

Jesus, Joe—are you *also* reading my old college journals??
Avatar 9:22am Roberto:

"Robero?" Heh, I might just use that.
Avatar 9:23am mlsgrrl:

Bill Bragg writes the most romantic songs of anyone living.
Avatar 9:23am Joe McG:

Whoops, sorry Roberto! Monday morning fingers. Hey Greg, yes I found them very interesting! ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

<3 Bragg
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24am David (in London):

foreign_listener_k - It's not 'typically British', that's a lazy generalisation. Some parts of the population indeed, but plenty more no not at all. Many German POWs elected to stay in the UK after the War, for example, because the hostility was so quickly forgotten, from Man City goalkeeper Bert Trautmann to the Schramm family in the village where I grew up.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:25am Threemoons:

Gooooood morning Joe McG, fellow YipYips
Avatar 9:26am Marc Francis:

@Joe McG: I always thought Les Boys was written in a way like Lou Reeds Walk On The Wild Side (although not nearly as good).
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:26am YETI BOB:

@D(iL): Aren't the Windsors basically imported German royalty?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27am Phillippe Bastille:

Good morning! Hey DiL, hey Handy!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:28am Tim 07030:

Ha, hearing this Harry Roesli from a couple of rooms away I initially thought it was the Style Council!
Avatar 9:28am Joe McG:

@Marc F: You are probably right! It always bugged me, but Krys O.'s link makes me think I need to give it a fairer shake. I don't really like it musically, though, anyway! It's a dud at the end of the LP.
  9:28am ?:

this harry track is great
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Would tend to write off Straits as 80s MOR (Middle of the Road) - but as a thin-haired no pick using Stratocaster diddler myself - it is humbling to hear Knopfler's command of all those tones on that track.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:30am Webhamster Henry:

Excellent accent, Sophia!
Avatar 9:30am Joe McG:

If you understand French, cover your ears for the next track or you may blush.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32am David (in London):

Yeti Bob - You mean The House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha? See Blackadder IV for a good comic take on that.

Hey Phillippe!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...there's worse Chart Hits than Straits - more backhanded a compliment than some songs deserve even...

Hey Sylvia. Have you got your copy of Carol's Premium CD yet? She sent me mine last week. It sounds great, doesn't it?
Avatar 9:58am Roberto:

Purple Rain hit the radio just as I was starting college. I can attest that it was played and played and played on top 40 radio all that semester. (And played some more.)
Avatar 10:00am Sylvia (France-NYC):

@David in London I did, in NYC! I got Michael to send me the tracks in digital form since I'm in France, but we haven't taken the time to listen to it yet (we're at the mastering stage of our next album, between that and radio listening, there's not enough hours in a day) I'm looking forward to it though

Haha - guess it’s a good thing I have it my my collection
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10am joe mulligan:

I was so tired of Tommy Conwell that when I saw him in a bar before his show I sang "I'm not your man" to him off key while he was getting a drink. one my jerk moments.
  10:14am WM:

Thanks for the Albert Ayler even though New Grass is not my favorite recording of his. The best track of his later work is Drudgery from Music is the Healing Force of the Universe.
Avatar 10:15am Joe McG:

@WM: I know it's a controversial album. Most hardcore fans don't dig it. One of his best album covers, though! :)

That is great about the post office. If people want to write letters to support the post office and help our democracy, there is a group called Vote Forward that has you write letters to people in certain states reminding them to vote. It has a template that you write on to explain your reasons for voting. It's non partisan. it's just encouraging people to vote. I wrote ten letters to people in Ohio last week. You can find them at votefwd.org.
