With billows and blasts from choirs and orchesters
Buskers and talkers
Big bands and squawkers,
the Stork Club has retained its qualities of decaying elegance and dwindling significance since the late 1950s.

Hola, señor Stork
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:24pm fred:

Stork, Kyrgyz komuz playing can get quite spectacular, I'm sure there are videos out there showing that (in fact there was one years ago on the defunct WFMU blog)

Joining a bit late today. Set up that cocktail of song!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:32pm fred:

@martinibomb: the young composers concert will be aired September 7 and 8, at 8:30 Paris time: www.ircam.fr... I think they'll be available later too, but I'm not sure (I asked, the composers sure hope so, but now everybody is on vacation)
  12:33pm Martinibomb:

@fred! Thanks so much - I just book marked it and put in my calendar so I hopefully can listen - very interested.

Hi Gran! nice ta see ya outside of Sheena ;-P
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:36pm fred:

@martinibomb: Are you on the West coast? That would make it 11:30 am, not a great time
Related fact: I shared an office with David Fenech many years ago
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:37pm doctorjazz:

Hey, Irene! Reserved a table for Sex Mob tonight on Marlboro, NY. Thanks for mentioning it, don't think I would have found it myself. Did you guys decide if you were going?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:38pm Mx. Granny (e/em):

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:42pm Irene Trudel:

doctorjazz, yes we are going! Peter's cousin is also joining us. We're hoping to arrive before 6:30pm for dinner. Come over and say hello!
Avatar 12:45pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Firesign 1998 - around the only time I saw them Live, in Santa Barbara...
  12:48pm Dean:

Racaille sounds a bit like Kevin Ayers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:48pm doctorjazz:

My brother in law will be coming as well (at a separate table, distanced, of course. To get the 2 tables, we had to be seated of their balcony, limited view but should hear the music OK. But we haven't seen my brother in law many months, was worth it to be able to get the 2 tables. But I'll see if I can find you Irene.
  12:49pm Martinibomb:

@fred I'm not familiar with Nisennenmondai I googled them and will certainly listen - from the wiki about them they sound really interesting
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:51pm Irene Trudel:

Likewise, we haven't seen our cousin in a very long time, but decided to chance it at the same table. (Masks on!) We'll either be wearing our maroon fish masks pictured in the playlist recently or NY Mets design. It'll be fun anyway.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:52pm doctorjazz:

Like this Racaille, not a familiar name (should create a smart phrase of that, say it all the time).
  12:55pm Dean:

Two faux-Joes in a row, then. Racaille's real name is Étienne Crubellier.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:56pm doctorjazz:

My brother in law is a bit of a germaphobe, he'd never agree to that (my daughter as well). It should be fine, though, hope to catch you all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57pm spodiodi:

oh boy
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57pm fred:

@martinibomb: I'm jealous, you're in for a treat
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:02pm spodiodi:

i like this already
  1:05pm Mark R:

Thanks for playing this somewhat obscure Stereolab track.
Avatar 1:05pm Wolfgang der kleine Mücke:

DrJ: Racaille's also half of ZnR - a 2-guy act with Hector Zazou. I think they have stuff on ReR records.
Avatar 1:06pm Wolfgang der kleine Mücke:

Yeah - Mark R - this one doesn't get a lotta love.
  1:09pm wendy del formaggio:

“Fuzzy Duck” kinda reminds me of the Mad Magazine flexi “It’s a Gas.”
  1:09pm Mark R:

Fuzz Duck kicks Disco Duck's ass!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:09pm spodiodi:

why not both?
  1:10pm Dean:

Took the words right out of my mouth, so to speak, @wendy df!
  1:10pm Mark R:

Yes I'm still finding odd little EPs and singles of theirs from the mid-90s. They were very prolific before Mary Hansen's untimely death
  1:10pm Martinibomb:

@stork I just discovered this musician I really like that is sorta reminds me of Tipsy - Hologram Teen. I just booked them for my show Sept30th but they have a bandcamp u should check/listen
Avatar 1:11pm Wolfgang der kleine Mücke:

Thans martinibomb! I lerve this kinda stuff!!
  1:11pm Martinibomb:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:13pm WR:

Is Fuzz Duck a cocktail?
  1:14pm wendy del formaggio:

My Italian isn’t good enough to know what’s going on in this song, but I love it anyway.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:15pm doctorjazz:

Typo correction, the Bley album odds Escalator Over the Hill, no?
  1:17pm Mark R:

This guitar player's sneaking a few bad-ass licks, isn't he?
Avatar 1:18pm Wolfgang der kleine Mücke:

What's that, DrJ? What was the typo?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:19pm doctorjazz:

It says Elevator Over The Hill on my phone, should be Escalator.

Since someone clued my ignorant backside that standup Bass is tuned like Gittar - EADG - I've wanted to try it...no frets tho so some huge application in yer intonation presumably a prerequisite ...that's if ya can hold the thing upright that is ...
Avatar 1:45pm Wolfgang der kleine Mücke:

RevRabb - i aint playin nothin i can't sit ta play.
Avatar 1:47pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...& me keeping Time in a Rhythm Section is laughably absurd - but I'm in it for kicks let's face it...
Avatar 1:52pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Made it to 43 :
' Leonard Harold Breau (August 5, 1941 – August 12, 1984) was a Canadian guitarist and music educator. Breau blended many styles of music, including jazz, country, classical, and flamenco. Inspired by country guitarists like Chet Atkins, Breau used fingerstyle techniques not often used in jazz guitar. By using a seven-string guitar and approaching the guitar like a piano, he opened up possibilities for the instrument. '
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:53pm doctorjazz:

Breau, quite some technique. Bre played a 7 string guitar (extra bass string) in the style of George Van Epps; classical finger style technique. Took lessons with a teacher versed in the style way back when-it's crazy hard (didn't get very far...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:56pm doctorjazz:

Joe Pass actually had his own version of solo guitar, saw him a few times playing alone. He didn't have right hand finger technique, but could manage to cover all aspects of a piece using his pick.
Avatar 1:56pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I don't use a pick. I arpeggiate chords like a Folky - sure. Am I playing chords & soloing @ the same time like Segovia? Not so much ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:57pm Mx. Granny (e/em):

Bob Dorough always makes me feel happy
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:00pm chresti:

Me too, Grannykins
Avatar 2:00pm Wolfgang der kleine Mücke:

Me three, chresti.
Avatar 2:02pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Even when he's cynical ..should've had a show like Sonny & Cher with Blossom Dearie... (??)...
Avatar 2:02pm Wolfgang der kleine Mücke:

Partly cuz Dorough always makes me think of that other Baltimore native-legend: The Man I Call Dougie-Baby - Our Father Who Art in Pittsburgh: Doug Schulkind
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:02pm doctorjazz:

(The George Van Epps technique book, which we used in my lessons, was an endless collection of 3 or 4 note chords, in which you had to take 1 note of the chord and move it up and down (keeping the others in place), then the next note of the chord, as infinitum. Builds amazing technique (but I found it minds numbing)
Avatar 2:05pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

@doc: Whilst arpeggiatin' yer pickin' ?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:05pm Mx. Granny (e/em):

RevRab: i'm enjoying the idea of a Bob and Blossom TV show!
Avatar 2:07pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Granny - a great employment opportunity for animators (given the Schoolhouse Rock precedent obviously...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:09pm chresti:

doc- it also sounds fingers numbing.

Avatar 2:14pm Wolfgang der kleine Mücke:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:16pm chresti:

Grannykins! Smoky skies-eeek!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:19pm doctorjazz:

Chresti-it was really hard, involved left hand fingers getting into positions they were NOT designed to get into.

Rev-haven't touched my guitar in about 7 years (when I fell of a bike and fractured my left elbow, which never quite healed properly). Was really just a fool-around player before that, had some folk and blues finger style technique, never mastered classical technique.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:30pm doctorjazz:

I remember the Clarke-Boland big band, haven't heard anyone play then in ages! Thanks for pulling then out, Stork!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:40pm spodiodi:

hi doctorjazz!
it's .. smokey (but i can;t complain... here in sf isn't anywhere near as bad as other places. overall, it's a little overwhelming. i haven't been watching the news much for that reason. but, yeah... wow. destruction,)

( i've donated to World Central Kitchen who've been feeding the newly-homeless and the fire fighters ... )

Berkeley was much better yesterday, but today again intensely smoky, which can only mean it's much, much worse in the surrounding areas.

I imagine that picture was taken in Bishek (there are only really two cities in Kyrgyzstan)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:44pm spodiodi:

i think the point reyes smoke has found it's way down here

Been busy day. My previous comment was made when adjusting music volume because on customer call. Liability of being an on-call support tech. Now trying to catch up with lunch and all the informative comments.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:50pm spodiodi:

you set it free. bless you
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:50pm spodiodi:

what's for lunch, WR?

Huge appreciation for all a y'alls presence in El Clubbo today. Such a swell time. Why why why does it have to end?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:53pm doctorjazz:

@Dean, didn't know Cadence now has a video channel, have to check it out (used to get Cadence magazine years back, but it just reviewed so many albums, just found out overwhelming, and let it lapse. Also found it odd that a record "store" and review magazine were combined, but now that seems to be a common practice).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:53pm Michael 98145:

great sounds today
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:55pm spodiodi:

thanks once again for your hospitality and fine taste, Herr Stork!
i leave humbled, calmed, entertained and grateful to you and everyone else
hope to see you soon!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:56pm doctorjazz:

Thanks, Wolfie, great time had by this listener!
  2:56pm Dean:

I hear you, @doctorjazz. Similar experience here. I subscribed for years, but decided I didn't want to deal with its primarily online presence with an annual print issue. David Haney has been working hard to keep Cadence afloat. But I do miss the t-i-n-y print record sale pages.

Nowadays, I read Fanfare, which consists of 500-600 pages of classical record reviews, small margins and almost no illustrations. No way I can keep up.

Hi spodiodi. Our usual weekend lunch, soba noodle with lots of shredded nori and ginger, boiled egg and craft beer on the side.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:58pm spodiodi:

(They are a bit schizy-can play covers of Dead tunes, movie themes, or they can get way out. I'm fine either way, but family coming along, they'll either love or hate it, depending on how theyblow. Took my older daughter to see them at The City Winery, Nels Cline guested, they blew WAY out the whole set. My daughter was not amused...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:02pm WR:

Seems I've had this thought before, spodiodi, you're (usually) on the west coast?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:03pm doctorjazz:
