Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:25am sinister dexter:

hi Keilidh , been loving your shows , hi Listeners
Avatar 12:25am Keilidh:

Here's a lovely death related poem to compliment this relentless evening!

Because I Could Not Stop For Death
by Emily Dickinson

Because I could not stop for Death
He kindly stopped for me
The Carriage held but just Ourselves
And Immortality.

We slowly drove
He knew no haste
And I had put away
My labor and my leisure too,
For His Civility

We passed the School, where Children strove
At Recess – in the Ring
We passed the Fields of Gazing Grain
We passed the Setting Sun

Or rather – He passed us
The Dews drew quivering and chill
For only Gossamer, my Gown
My Tippet – only Tulle

We paused before a House that seemed
A Swelling of the Ground
The Roof was scarcely visible
The Cornice – in the Ground

Since then – 'tis Centuries and yet
Feels shorter than the Day
I first surmised the Horses' Heads
Were toward Eternity

who, who, Handy Havercation
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:37am Handy Haversack:

Nothwestern Catskills, Franco. The fire was well contained (and expertly built) and did not threaten habitation.

By which I mean: sympathies.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:38am Franco Twinkie:

Okay! Cabin or tent?
  12:39am Aggravation OD:

Yaaaaahhhhhhhh!!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:39am Franco Twinkie:

We can't go camping right now. All the good places are on fire.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:40am Handy Haversack:

House, really. I mean, it's bigger than our apt. at home. One bedroom with an additional sleeping loft we won't use because it would make the dog frown.

Please don't camp in fire, Franco. It voids all the warranties.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:41am Franco Twinkie:

Copy that.
Avatar 12:42am Keilidh:

although camping in fire sounds lowkey brutal

Hi Keilidh!
Avatar 12:44am Keilidh:

greetings chresti!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:44am Handy Haversack:

Actually, I just did vague math, and it's not bigger than our tiny apt. About the same if you count the screened-in porch. It's real nice. And a fire pit outside.

We're pretty happy. Even the dog!

Hi, chresti!

owls lurking about???
on the way home, i am once again astounded at not only the QUIET (considering it is Saturday night in Hoboken) but all the CRICKETS! . . . and remembering how when i was a kid, my parents taught me that they were "good" bugs b/c they preyed on termites, etc.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:53am Listener Howard & the Cats:

Goddammit, I missed the first 45 minutes. I suppose taking it agin from the top is too much to ask for.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:08am mariano:

No, never been to the Owl Tree, spodi.

Keilidh: it's "AL-ah-rick."
  1:10am spodiodi:

it has a pleasing Owl motif
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:11am Listener Howard & the Cats:

I fucking Love POSSESSION!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:12am coelacanth∅:

i think in recording terminology it'd be called reverb. technically reverb and echo are the same thing.
it's a fast, short echo.
  1:12am spodiodi:

i've been watching a 21-season long tv series called Midsomer Murders... it's kind of funny (?)
Avatar 1:12am Keilidh:

u r so right coela!! can't wait to hear myself say echo 20 more times
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:13am Listener Howard & the Cats:

If anyone has Shudder, there is a really bleak, brutal, excellent movie called THE GOLDEN GLOVE. Loosely based on a German serial killer in the 70s. It's just hopeless alcoholism and despair, but if you like GRIM AS FUCK movies, I recommend it.
Avatar 1:13am slugluv1313:

apparently there is a book (and TV film) called "I Heard The Owl Call My Name) en.wikipedia.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:14am Ken From Hyde Park:

You're keeping an eye on storms Laura and Marco, Mariano? I hope they cancel each other out rather than merge into something bad.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:15am coelacanth∅:

i just finished mother night by Vonnegut a few days ago and ordered god bless you mr. rosewater and breakfast of champions from the library but was out of town until today so haven't started them yet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:16am Handy Haversack:

There's always a new Sam Neill movie to watch. That guy worked. Will check out Possession.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:18am Listener Howard & the Cats:

I've also been watching MARY HARTMAN, MARY HARTMAN from the early '70s. People always told me to watch it, but I had no idea it would be SOOO fucking good!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:18am Listener Howard & the Cats:

@spodiodi John Belushi reference?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:19am Rory:

Zulawski, great director! Keilidh I highly recommend On The Silver Globe, The Devil and Third part of the Night.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:19am Rory:

Have all on dvd
  1:20am spodiodi:

you know it, Howard :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20am Listener Howard & the Cats:

Zulawski's ON THE SILVER GLOBE and DIABEL are incredible. Still have to watch THIRD PART...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20am mariano:

Mother Night is one of my favorites of Vonnegut's. There was a not-so-bad film adaptation with Nick Nolte in the late 90s.

Handy: Sam Neill will always be the face of the Antichrist to me, first time I saw him was in Omen III as the grownup Damien. That dude has some devil eyes!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:21am Ken From Hyde Park:

I didn't see owls today, but while driving, I had to stop and let some wild turkeys cross the road. I think there were four hens and eight or nine young ones.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:21am Rory:

@Howard, my favorite films ever along with Teruo Ishii of course!
Avatar 1:21am slugluv1313:

Possession sounds fascinating! HOW have i not seen this already?!?

i thought i saw some wild turkey (or similar) crossing my lips today
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:23am Listener Howard & the Cats:

@Rory Oh! I have I big SHOGUNS JOY OF TORTURE poster hanging in my bedroom!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:24am Rory:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:24am Handy Haversack:

Then explain In the Mouth of Madness, Mariano. I mean, pick a side!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:24am Listener Howard & the Cats:

@mariano YES! Seen Polanski's THE TENANT? Finally just got the restored treatment...
  1:24am Cooh John:

GLADLY, JOHN. NO APOLOGY NECESSARY.
Avatar 1:26am mb:

William, riseeeee
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:26am Listener Howard & the Cats:

@Rory Absolutely! I think that movie might have been how I found Ishii in the first place, because I found Butoh first.
Avatar 1:26am slugluv1313:

@ Howard -- ahhh i should FINALLY watch Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman! -- it was on when i was a teenager, still living at home -- my younger sister and i were watching the first episode, my Dad walks in RIGHT when Mary and her husband are talking in bed -- he freaked and would not *allow* us to watch it (yup my parents could be THAT weird, repressed -- no wonder i want to marry an Owl, hah!)
and, the cats here say HELLO to your cats :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:27am Listener Howard & the Cats:

Pouring one out for Wm. every night.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:27am mariano:

Listener Howard: no, haven't seen that one, I'll check it out. Thanks!
Avatar 1:27am Keilidh:

yes i'm playing the entire Hatebeak/Caninus split. it's the length of an average metal hit. ENJOY.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:30am coelacanth∅:

mariano interesting you say that because it's pretty different than all other Vonnegut books i've read, and it's not a commonly exalted one. (in fact the only place i'd ever heard of it was in wikipedia's list of Vonnegut novels)
Avatar 1:30am slugluv1313:

been *trying* to bring myself to watch "The Hate U Give" -- but, i had just finished the book . . . and the next day, Ahmaud Arbery was murdered
  1:31am Diezel Tea:

Hate beak. Oh my.

Good morning from Hayastan.))
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:31am Listener Howard & the Cats:

@slugluv1313: Did you ever see FERNWOOD 2NIGHT or AMERICA 2NIGHT? Fake 70s talk shows with absurd guests. Martin Mull and Fred Willard. One of my favorite shows ever, just recently found out it was a spinoff from Mary Hartman.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:32am Rory:

Hatebeak was amazing!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:32am mariano:

coela: The protagonist of MN has a cameo in Slaughterhouse, as the American Nazi who visits the American POWs to try to recruit them. Didn't Vonnegut call MN his only book with a moral or something along those lines?
Avatar 1:32am slugluv1313:

@ Howard -- YES! in later years, saw Fernwood 2night -- hysterical!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:33am coelacanth∅:

HATEBEAK will be playing at my wedding to the Owl :)
Avatar 1:35am Keilidh:

perfect, slug!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:35am Listener Howard & the Cats:

@slugluv1313: And HELLO to your Cats! And I can dig it, my cousins were not allowed to watch THE WIZ because there were no white people in it. SO I assume GOOD TIMES, THE JEFFERSONS, etc, were also off limits for not having enough white people? People are just fucking stupid, no matter what color they are. All Power to the CATS.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:36am coelacanth∅:

mariano i think you're right -in the introduction
  1:37am Ignore Function:

Where could modern music go after Hatebeak? Downhill. That's where.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:38am mariano:

Howard: ever seen Queen Margot/La Reine Margot? Another great Adjani performance. Really good period piece set in 16th-century France. Great ensemble cast, production design, the works.
  1:40am Diezel Tea:

Sometimes, actually never until this morning, I wonder if Blake Harrison participates in PxDx rehearsals, or he's just the dude that shows up with cases beer at the compound and says "Yeah!" and bangs his head whenever Hull comes up with a heavy riff for a new song.
  1:41am spodiodi:

coel∅, from my imagination to yours. bottoms up, friend
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:42am Ken From Hyde Park:

Let Me Die A Youngman's Death - Roger McGough

Let me die a youngman's death
not a clean and inbetween
the sheets holywater death
not a famous-last-words
peaceful out of breath death

When I'm 73
and in constant good tumour
may I be mown down at dawn
by a bright red sports car
on my way home
from an allnight party

Or when I'm 91
with silver hair
and sitting in a barber's chair
may rival gangsters
with hamfisted tommyguns burst in
and give me a short back and insides

Or when I'm 104
and banned from the Cavern
may my mistress
catching me in bed with her daughter
and fearing for her son
cut me up into little pieces

@ Howard -- holy crap! my Mom would not let us watch "All in the Family" because the Archie Bunker character was a bigot -- it was not until years later that i actually watched re-runs of the show and realized that most of the time the joke was on Archie, he was proven wrong, etc.

coela: The Mother Night film is worth a watch, Nolte's really good in it. Directed by Keith Gordon, Dangerfield's son in Back to School. He met Vonnegut on the set apparently. Remember his cameo? Dangerfield hired him to write a term paper on himself.

Good one, Ken!

Keilidh: there's an interesting occult-tinged costume drama called Fanny Lye Deliver'd, set in 17th-century England, a puritan couple encountering some fugitive libertine couple who are in (another) weird religious sect. It's kind of uneven in some ways but interesting.

Same here, slugluv. Just found out about it recently from an article, really curious about it.

It's true about the owl being in love with my mom. He'd hang out by her bathroom window and hoot at her whenever she was putting on her face in the morning. He even got into the house once (I think to press his suit), but ended up embarrassing himself by flying into a window and conking himself out. I have a pic somewhere of him on his back with his feet up. He was fine after a while.

Peterloo is more of a collection of political speeches. It was interesting when the got into discussions on why women didn't have the vote.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:32am Listener Howard & the Cats:

@mariano: I think I fell asleep in Topsy Turvey, been meaning to try again, but it seemed like he was fulfilling a big budget thing and losing what I loved about his work... Haven't seen Mr Turner. I enjoyed Peterloo, but it certainly wasn't one of his best.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:40am mariano:

Thing about Topsy Turvy is that he really took his incisive socialist eye to the era and ended up making maybe the best-observed Victorian-set film. He has a real eye for social nuance. With Peterloo, I think that because he was so enthusiastic about the subject (the Peterloo Massacre was basically the beginning of the Labour movement) he tried to cram everything in there and it wound up feeling like a series of disjointed vignettes.
Avatar 2:41am slugluv1313:

@ Diezel Tea -- yikes!
hope you get some rest later!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:42am mariano:

Andrew: agree totally. I think Leigh's enthusiasm for the subject got the better of him. With Topsy Turvy it really helped that he's not a Gilbert & Sullivan fan (neither am I). I think Timothy Spall was amazing in Mr. Turner, and it was another amazing recreation of an era.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:43am Andrew Waterloo:

@mariano... it was interesting to have seen Topsy Turvy and then witness all the controversy over the musical.
