How do, Julie and all! Love the beach goths!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:01pm Julie:

Hi ya James!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:06pm fred:

Hello Julie, it's been a while. Is it true that you're leaving the station? (2020, don't bother trying to use me for a reference)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:06pm Julie:

hiya Fred!! no I'm not, I'm switching to a different day in September.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:09pm fred:

What day and time?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:09pm Julie:

Moving to Tuesdays from 3-7 pm
Avatar 12:09pm Daya:

I’m here! Just got out of my meeting and will be here for a while, maybe I’ll go out tomorrow. I gotta listen to your show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:10pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Happy sunny afternoon!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:10pm Julie:

awww Daya you're two sweet! fresh air is good! Hiya Ken!
Avatar 12:11pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Frankly gonna conflict with the mainstream programs but change happens.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:12pm Julie:

Well, I had the same problem opposite Pseu
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:13pm fred:

@Julie: Unfortunately, I might be able to listen to the middle of that time slot (unfortunately, because I'd rather be at a live show, but those seem unlikely)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:14pm Julie:

live show? What's that!
Avatar 12:16pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...myself I don't do Pseu.. but anyway...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:16pm Julie:

always a lot of competition for ears now!
Avatar 12:17pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

A good problem to have of course... generally speaking.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:18pm Julie:

David (in Germany) wanted something earlier in the day and I had the chance for 4 (!) hours so I took it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:18pm fred:

I already bought tickets for 20 dance shows. More next week. I know these probably won't happen, but if I don't support them, these companies won't survive
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:19pm Julie:

good for you, fred!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:19pm Rich in Washington:

Good gawd! THIS is Herman's Hermits?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:20pm Rich in Washington:

Groovy show! Glad you're on today!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:20pm Rich in Washington:

HA! I thought that Wire jam was HH!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:21pm Julie:

thanks Rich! HH was right before
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:21pm Julie:

that instrumental, that WAS HH
Avatar 12:22pm Sylvia (France-NYC):

Why don't I have the Smile SessIons?
Avatar 12:30pm northguineahills:

I want some field recordings of Julie's birds!
Avatar 12:31pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Gawshdarn
Avatar 12:32pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...grumble grumble tracFone...
*Gawshdarnit but I like almost everything you play...
Avatar 12:34pm Sylvia (France-NYC):

@northguineahills @12:30 that sucks :(
Avatar 12:35pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Ray Bradbury's 100th today
- & Neil Gaiman's audio tribute made me weep this morning.
Avatar 12:36pm northguineahills:

@Rev Rabbit: I usually go w/ consarnit! (1849 California prospecter's slang...)

@Sylvia: merci, I had to do so as being a 'murican, I need a car to work... (I miss NYC)
Avatar 12:37pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I'm sure we all dig background birdies !
  12:37pm Ike:

Yikes Julie, you didn’t just half-electrocute yourself or something, did you?
Avatar 12:38pm northguineahills:

I want my books back, and then I can reread my Neil Gaiman books... (they're in storage).
Avatar 12:38pm Sylvia (France-NYC):

@northguineahills (I miss NYC, too)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:38pm Julie:

nah it was just the sound my mic made when I moved the wire..
Avatar 12:39pm northguineahills:

I thought one of your birds got loose.....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:45pm Julie:

always possible but not likely!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:46pm listener james from westwood:

Martha & the Muffins cover!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:47pm David Dichelle:

Great cover, Julie!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:48pm Julie:

Very strange song for Toyah to pick but I've always enjoyed it!
Avatar 12:49pm Daya:

Yes, I remember “Echo Beach” by Martha & the Muffins, on their 1st LP “Metro Music”. Loved the cover of that album :)
  12:51pm Ike:

So Lucifer is more than just a procedural where Satan (or his son?) helps cops solve murders then?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:51pm Julie:

It is that as well but yeah there is a lot more to it. And he's Satan himself.
Avatar 12:55pm solo mon:

Had to sign in to say wow abt the Toyah Martha and muffins cover!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:55pm Julie:

glad you liked it solo!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:56pm Summer and Michael and Sylvia:

Happy Saturday, Julie! Congrats on the move!
Avatar 12:56pm Daya:

Just a question: any Tori Amos planned for today? It’s her birthday :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:56pm Julie:

hiya S&M&S thank you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57pm Julie:

oh no! I didn't know that. shoot.
Avatar 12:57pm Daya:

No worries, I just found out this morning myself.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57pm listener james from westwood:

Till like a week ago, I'd no idea Pierson was the co-owner w/ her partner of a B&B in NY State!
Avatar 12:58pm Daya:

Oh! Awesome, Rindy Ross!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:58pm Julie:

i actually looked birthdays up last night and Tori was not in the list! ARGH.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:58pm doctorjazz:

Hi Julie and Saturday listeners!
Avatar 12:59pm solo mon:

Aw quarter flash they were the hometown heroes where I grew up. Them and Nu Shooz xo
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:59pm Julie:

ah I remember Nu Shooz too! Hiya Dr Jazz!
  12:59pm Dean:

Never before noticed how much one of the old guys in Wire looks like Graham Parker, who deserves more love (airtime) at WFMU.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:00pm Julie:

heya Dean, what Graham album do you recommend?
Avatar 1:00pm solo mon:

Quarterflash was originally called “Seafood Mama” lol so glad they changed the name
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:01pm Julie:

oh wow that's horrible
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:02pm Julie:

I love the piano on this
  1:04pm Dean:

The early ones are all good, but the one that got him a smidgen of notoriety is Squeezing Out Sparks, which was remastered well not so long ago. Folks are fond of Mona Lisa's Sister, too. Frankly, though, I think his cover of "Hold Back the Night" is the way to go. It's on an EP, The Pink Parker, on pink vinyl!
Avatar 1:04pm solo mon:

Yeah it’s liked deranged Elton John piano
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:04pm David Dichelle:

TV! TV!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:04pm Julie:

thanks Dean, not terribly familiar
Avatar 1:05pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Yup Tori apparently just under the wire to be a Sun in Leo
- & a 1963 Water Hare as am I
- she was born the day before 'She Loves You' by The Beatles was released...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:05pm doctorjazz:

The first 2 Graham Parker albums are fabulous to my ears (Squeezing Out Sparks, Heat Treatment). Don't know the later ones well (or at all)
  1:05pm Ike:

Apparently CBS made a pilot where Frankenstein’s monster solves murders but it didn’t get picked up. The question is, would he have been investigating the deaths of each of his body parts?
  1:06pm Dean:

Some of us, Parker included, think he is what Elvis Costello pretended to be.

First two albums, @doctorjazz, are Howlin' Wind and Heat Treatment, I believe. SOS came later.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:06pm Julie:

with the right actor that might've been amazing
Avatar 1:07pm Daya:

Dean: I was always fond of “Local Girls” by GP and the Rumor.
Avatar 1:07pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Good angle Ike.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:07pm chresti:

Hi Julie and souls!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:08pm Dropof Goldensun:

Greetings y'all
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:08pm Julie:

hiya Chresti!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:08pm Julie:

hi Dropof!
  1:08pm Dean:

Yeah, "Local Girls" is terrific. The Rumour, of course, was essentially Brinsley Schwarz sans Nick Lowe.

Howlin' Wind, Heat Treatment, Stick to Me, then Squeezing.
  1:08pm spodiodi:

ahoy, ahoy, Julie and Souls!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:08pm doctorjazz:

Make it those 3, then. (You're correct, of course, SOS was 1979, 3 years after the others)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:09pm Julie:

hey spodi!
  1:09pm Ike:

I can’t imagine they wouldn’t have hired some ridiculously sexy dude. So, Frankenstein’s SEXY monster. Who investigates homicides. LOL.
  1:10pm Ike:

OMG Tim Curry is such a good audiobook narrator.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:11pm doctorjazz:

squeezing Out Sparks is a strong album.
Recently listened to the 1st album by The Beths (must have heard it 1st on FMU somewhere), really fine Power Pop!
Avatar 1:13pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

So - I hallucinated David Johansen doing 'Tan' ?...
  1:13pm spodiodi:

i really dislike laying in the sun too, Julie!
  1:13pm spodiodi:

especially on the freakin' beach 8^|
  1:14pm Dean:

Around the time Squeezing was released, the band issued a limited edition live performance of the album, top to bottom. Another reissue of the album included both the studio and live versions, back to back.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:14pm chresti:

I really dislike BEING in the sun.
  1:14pm spodiodi:

hi Birdies!
Avatar 1:14pm Daya:

If you are into power pop, doctorjazz, for my money, I always felt that Code Blue was one of the best, unfortunately they only did one LP.
  1:15pm spodiodi:

chresti, i hear you!
Avatar 1:15pm Daya:

Yep, just watched Night Shift again last week!
Avatar 1:15pm Daya:

And yes, directed by Ron Howard!
Avatar 1:15pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Well the Ozone layer vaporized - it was different once !
We earn sunlight in North New England...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:15pm listener james from westwood:

Kevin Costner was in Night Shift, as Frat Boy #1!

(And it was indeed Ron's film!)
  1:17pm Dean:

Wow, haven't heard Code Blue since forever! More good LA power pop: The Pop and The Nerves.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:18pm chresti:

A friend was in the Pop.
Avatar 1:18pm Daya:

Yes, Code Blue was formed by Dean Chamberlain after leaving The Motels.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:18pm chresti:

Tim Henderson.^
Avatar 1:23pm solo mon:

Ooh Terry, FB3 one of my fav groups!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:23pm doctorjazz:

Have to check out all those bands, thanks. Big Fountains of Wayne fan (got to see them on their last tour). Valley Lodge is a PP band I really like, especially their 1st album (eponymous). They have an FMU connection.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:23pm Julie:

that's Dave hill's band isn't it?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:24pm doctorjazz:

Yup!
  1:24pm Dean:

Valley Lodge is new to me. The Pop were terrific.
Avatar 1:26pm Daya:

Sweet! XTC! I have everything they ever released, and then some! Love those guys :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:27pm Dropof Goldensun:

One of my favorite XTC songs!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:27pm Summer and Michael and Sylvia:

This is maybe our fav XTC track ever, Julie!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:28pm Julie:

wow! It was a pretty random pick
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:28pm Summer and Michael and Sylvia:

Random works! Ha! x
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29pm Ken From Hyde Park:

I see the obit for Jack Sherman today. He was the guitarist with Red Hot Chili Peppers on their first album. He was 64. RIP
Avatar 1:30pm Daya:

Always loved “Ten Feet Tall” and of course “Nigel” ;)
Avatar 1:32pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Man I have got to see 'Phantom of the Paradise' !
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:32pm Julie:

there was a quiet riot guy who passed as well. yes REV you really do!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:34pm schmutz:

listening while making breakfast and loving it. And weirdly just rewatched Phantom of Paradise last night!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:34pm doctorjazz:

Great ELO
Avatar 1:34pm Daya:

“Mr. Blue Sky” was ranked as the ‘happiest song ever written’.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:34pm Julie:

I heard this in a cab when I was moving one of my birds and was like, yeah I know it's corny but I love it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:35pm Julie:

hiya schmutz! ain't it great?!
  1:35pm Dean:

Frank Banali, hadn't heard that. There goes another one.

My 9YO daughter spontaneously utters, "TikTok!" when she hears a tune on the radio she's heard on the platform. About ten seconds into this ELO, "TikTok!" I informed her I've heard the band live three times l-o-n-g ago, when they played this tune.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:36pm Julie:

well if tik tok turns them onto good music it's not ALL bad!
Avatar 1:36pm Daya:

Dean: yep, seen them do this live back in the 70s too, always great fun live!
Avatar 1:37pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Song knows exactly what it is. An example of Jeff Lynne's Production being where it belongs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:37pm Dropof Goldensun:

I miss my vocoder!
  1:37pm Dean:

And yeah, I know, mere kids aren't supposed to be exposed to TikTok. I have a difference of opinion. I believe nobody in their right mind regardless of age should be exposed to 98% of the sludge online. I also enjoy having family sing-along to Cardi B.
Avatar 1:38pm Daya:

Christine!!! :D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:39pm Julie:

Dean is cool dad!
  1:39pm Dean:

Back then, late '70s, ELO were a hearty "guilty pleasure" live band, boundless fun. And the opening acts were amazing: Steve Hillage, Little Feat, Widowmaker. I vaguely recall Savoy Brown opening for them, too, but I only saw them three times...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:39pm WR:

So you found a Perfect recording that you like?

Hi all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:40pm Julie:

yes! I like this much better than her stuff I know with FM
  1:40pm Dean:

No, Dean is a curmudgeon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:40pm doctorjazz:

Missed Perfect back in the day, nice!
Avatar 1:41pm Daya:

Dean: when I saw them Starcastle opened (Yes ‘cover’ band)
  1:41pm Dean:

I learned to enjoy FM thanks to this lady's work. Come to think of it, a few years ago my kids were into Lindsay Buckingham. Weirdly, they called me Daddy Buckingham.
  1:42pm Dean:

That is amazing, @Daya. I know Starcastle well, but never had a chance to see them. I did see Angel live, though. Hella loud.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:42pm Julie:

Stevie and Lindsay were FM for me because I started with Rumours. I'm learning more though!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:42pm doctorjazz:

The mix on this Ross is weird.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:42pm Julie:

don't say starcastle you'll summon clay pigeon
  1:42pm Dean:

Another Yes sound-alike, @Daya, Druid. Know them?
Avatar 1:42pm Daya:

I loved Christine and her solo stuff, she always had such a ‘soulful’ voice that resonated in me and affected me deeply.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:42pm Julie:

Yeah it is weird
Avatar 1:43pm Daya:

Dean: nope, not heard of them, will look into them, thanks!
  1:44pm Dean:

https://www.discogs.com/artist/1191071-Druid-3
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:45pm Julie:

I got some Druid on your rec but I don't think I've played any yet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:46pm doctorjazz:

Did you lose a channel?
  1:46pm Dean:

A bit of an acquired taste, if only because the vocalist's tessitura is stratospheric.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:46pm doctorjazz:

(Maybe it's just something here)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:47pm Julie:

hmm I don't think so..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:47pm Julie:

anyone else hearing that?
  1:47pm Dean:

L and R all here.
Avatar 1:48pm Daya:

Ah, their drummer went on to play in Gary Numan’s Tubeway Army
Avatar 1:48pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I got Stereo - possibly less Right channel?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:49pm Julie:

it was actually slightly MORE right channel but should be even now, going out anyway can't say anything about the production
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:49pm doctorjazz:

Elton sounds good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:50pm Julie:

no one ever talks about how wonderful that cover art is
Avatar 1:50pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Bass tends to get mixed Left so always sounds louder
- Elton seems fine...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:50pm Julie:

I have a puzzle of it which I will attempt when I have a table
Avatar 1:51pm StringOFperils:

Never did listen to this Elton; it's when I stopped listening to him...still pretty rockin'. Interesting.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:51pm doctorjazz:

(I was sitting of center, maybe that with the slight imbalance is what I heard. Vocal still sounds back more than I'd expect, but what the hell)
Avatar 1:52pm Daya:

I was kind of getting away from Elton about this time... :(
Avatar 1:52pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

That is mad Art.
Avatar 1:55pm Daya:

Rock of the Westies
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:55pm fred:

@doctorjazz: I hope you're not in quarantine, how was the wedding?
  1:57pm Dean:

I asked that very question on Ken's show, July 22 this year. Another commenter assured me it's "sun shine in."

@fred-separation there could have been better (did my best to keep myself distanced). Haven't heard anyone got sick, though, waiting to see.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:01pm Michael 98145:

hey, there. housewarming party!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:02pm fred:

@doctorjazz: I hope your niece was happy, and that the virus didn't ruin her day
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:03pm doctorjazz:

Thanks, Fred! Lots of complications I won't get into.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:04pm Julie:

my niece was supposed to get married in TX in October, smartly she has postponed. family in far too many states to gather anytime soon
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:10pm fred:

@Julie: Do you like the ONJ cover record by Juliana Hatfield?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:10pm Julie:

oh yes indeed!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:13pm Julie:

Her version of A Little More Love is excellent
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:14pm Julie:

I mean I love most anything by Juliana and Olivia
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:19pm fred:

I worship Juliana, only saw her once (Minor Alps), had a chance to talk to her but froze. Typical
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:19pm Julie:

I saw the JH Three reunion show, wonderful
  2:22pm spodiodi:

i like this Fawns of Love track
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:22pm Julie:

yeah I got that on bandcamp gonna have to get their full album next time!
  2:23pm spodiodi:

cool! hope it's great (and you play it here ;)
  2:25pm Dean:

Judging from the Metal Mountains and Fawns of Love, I wonder if you know/like Natural Snow Buildings? A bit more sonically aggressive, but of a kind with those. Lotsa spacey drone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:25pm Julie:

oooh no I don't know them!
  2:26pm Dean:

A vast discography, not to mention offshoot bands.
  2:27pm Dean:

This will fill a few hours best spent not unpacking: https://www.discogs.com/artist/323032-Natural-Snow-Buildings
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:27pm Julie:

haha fabulous thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:28pm fred:

Natural Snow Buildings! I still wonder how never saw them. Not going to fix that anytime soon, obviously
Avatar 2:28pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Smiths remaining indispensable ...despite ...
  2:29pm Dean:

More likely you, where you are, @fred, than me!
Avatar 2:31pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Psychedelic Stones ftw.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:31pm Julie:

this album is new to me I'm really digging it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:33pm Dropof Goldensun:

Great Stones tune!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:35pm fred:

@Dean: not sure about that. The local scene can be cliquish, so they could be more likely to play wherever you are than here. Must be a reason why they haven't played where I would have expected them to
Avatar 2:35pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

OK 'The Trip' was Sunshine's B-Side. We had that 45 probly in real time when I wasn't even 3 yet...
'Ruby Tuesday' - I mean - seriously. Beatles' shadow notwithstanding...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:41pm Julie:

the trip is ALSO a great song
  2:41pm Dean:

Huh, seems like NSB have played quite a bit in England.
Avatar 2:44pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

With The Jam it's like this Mod Revival thing - are they just copyists right when Punk was really happening? Then you hear their trax again & - I NEED this...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:44pm Julie:

it's too bad I find Weller's solo stuff a snooze
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:45pm Julie:

even style council, not so interesting to me
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:46pm fred:

Generation thing: to my neighbors' kids, Prince is old history. I didn't see that coming
Avatar 2:47pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...yeah well...good word.
& Prince to be brutal just seems too MTV to me - despite the incomparable breadth of his capabilities...shrugs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:47pm Julie:

a lot of people feel that way unfortunately, consider him an 80s artist
  2:48pm spodiodi:

i haven't heard this Trio Frutti jam since the 80s
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:48pm coelacanth∅:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:55pm Michael 98145:

thanx, Julie
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:55pm coelacanth∅:

Julie @2.45 totally agree. when the jam broke up friends jumped right on the style council bandwagon, pretending to be more sophisticated or something; but really it's just boring mimickry (in my ever so humble opinion)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:55pm Mx. Granny (e/em):

fred: i'll do what i can! :-) good to see you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:55pm schmutz:

Thanks Julie Happy new apartment!

  2:57pm spodiodi:

happy b-day, Granny!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:57pm coelacanth∅:

(okay, i think i get it.
filling in for Charlie and 1/3 Dave...)
Avatar 2:58pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Idea that Good Vibrations was Brian Wilson trying to cram the Universe into a 2:00 Chart Single - & that finally broke him...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:58pm chresti:

Thanks Julie!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:58pm coelacanth∅:

Thanks Julie!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:58pm Mx. Granny (e/em):
