Howdee Fabio and everyone - too long since I last listened, loving it already!
  3:11pm David in London:

TDK, been back to the ancestral village, with slightly unreliable WiFi signal, for a week and hence off the boards here. Glad you like what I sent my man, thanks.

Ron partied through the medium of fuzz.

Hey Handy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:12pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Stooges summa my top Favorite Gittar. Don't know why that isn't more widely expressed...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:13pm mariano:

Ancestral village... are you in fact Cheddar Man, David?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:13pm Handy Haversack:

David, happy to have No Fun with you! We are cleaning and prepping for departure over here, too.
  3:13pm David in London:

Hey Mariano!
Avatar 3:14pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

wow, this Link Wray is a perfect mash of riffs between The Cars "cruiser" and PTV's "just like arcadia" .. how is that possible..?

  3:19pm David in London:

Much as I love him, I’m not entirely convinced that Roky should ever have been driving heavy vehicles.
  3:20pm WM:

The Stooges, Pere Ubu and now 13th Floor Elevators. If this keeps up I'll have no more brain cells by the end of the show.
  3:20pm Ghetto Pastrami:

I lived around the corner from him for a while and didn't know
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:20pm Handy Haversack:

Update, David, about 3.5 hrs north of the city. Coincidentally, just down the road from where our own Mr. Pumpy has a getaway place! We are going meet the mother of the legend!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:21pm mrdonutsu:

It may be this Fabio imposter guy - who runs around calling himself "Mr. Sharpe" - there in the picture. Or perhaps it's the inverse of that.
  3:21pm Listener Robert:

This must be that Fablo show I've read so much about lately.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:21pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Elevators' code in mid1960s Texas was to not play or record unless tripping. Except the drummer. Even the Grateful Dead were incredulous reportedly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:21pm chresti:

This is perfect bummer summer music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:22pm Handy Haversack:

*Er, "upstate, David"^^
Avatar 3:22pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

This set has been a medical necessity for a long time.
  3:23pm David in London:

Thanks for the upstate update Handy. Sounds grand. How long are you going for? A change of scenery sure did me good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:25pm Chop Scott:

Sounding great Fabio!
Avatar 3:25pm slugluv1313:

greetings, Fabio, Skeleton Crew, Everyone!
happy to be part of Summer FAILURE!
Fabio, you look positively DEMONIC in that photograph -- so cool! like a still from a color-oversaturated Ken Russell film -- ??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:26pm Ike:

Oh man, getting away to a cabin, or a lean-to, or a rustic heap upstate sounds really good right about now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:27pm chris_in_space:

@Revolution Rabbit I read as much re: Elevators code in Paul Drummond's great book, "Eye Mind." One of the best rock bios I've ever read. The Elevators made the bands from San Fran look like poseurs!
Avatar 3:27pm slugluv1313:

@ Handy -- happy travels! please give warm HELLOs to Mr. Pumpy!
btw -- guessing i had not heard them b/c i am on the fourth floor here? but i hear TONS of crickets when i am walking about in the evenings :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:28pm Carmichael:

Heya Fabs and embracers of failure. Smoke and ash are the overriding themes to my city today.
Avatar 3:29pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

GREAT SNEEZING JESUS, that hexlove thing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:30pm mariano:

3.5 hours north of the city... you going up around Saratoga Springs, Handy?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:31pm spodiodi:

130th floor elevators?
  3:34pm Miss G:

Oh, oh, speaking of cassettes, does anyone know a good device to put my cassette music onto my laptop?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:35pm Handy Haversack:

slugluv, alas, Mr. P won't be up there. He's confined to New Jersey by circumstances.

David, we're going up Fri.-Wed. Tue. is the lovely Kate's bday, and she really wanted to go away for it. I *think* the dog is also excited, but he's hard to read!

Not exactly, Mariano -- sort of on the way to Cooperstown! Hobart, NY, on the W. Branch of the Delaware.
  3:35pm ami ad:

Hello DJ. Hello all. A fine day to fail it is.
Avatar 3:35pm βrian:

I once spent a month on Saratoga Lake. Nice land around there, but the lake was too damn crowded.
  3:36pm P-90:

When it comes to Kraut Rock acts, sometimes the more obscure, the better.
  3:37pm Miss G:

re: the Great Link Wray, maybe we said it before, but the PBS docu "Rumble: The Indians Who Rocked the World" is streaming on Azn. Prime.
Avatar 3:37pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

another conny plank winner, this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:38pm spodiodi:

thank you, Miss G! noted!
Avatar 3:38pm slugluv1313:

@ Handy -- ah, apologies! mis-read your earlier comment (and yes, i was wondering about that, remembering Mr. Pumpy's situation)
  3:39pm David in London:

Miss G, don’t know if they’re available in the States, but I used a small Ion USB tape machine and it did the job pretty well.
Avatar 3:39pm slugluv1313:

now for some reason at the mention of "Saratoga," i cannot get The Odd Couple's version of "You're So Vain" outta my head
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:41pm chresti:

Carmichael, pretty lousy air down here, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:41pm Handy Haversack:

It's funny -- Mr. Pumpy and I have hung out and played games every Sunday since April and every other Saturday since the beginning of July, but we have never met in person!
  3:42pm Miss G:

David in London, thanks so much for the brand name, Ion seems to be in US -- I'm so paranoid about the tapes getting damaged. . .
Avatar 3:42pm slugluv1313:

and wracking my brain, trying to remember if i did indeed experience a Circle X performance, especially during their Eros/Liotta collaboration days . . .
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:42pm PaulRobeson1920:

Skidmore College is up in Saratoga, a very popular university for southern planters to send their kids for the summer. If you find yourself over that way, look at the buildings near the college. They speak to an age in Saratoga Springs. The Lincoln Bath House is cool too, in the Saratoga State Park.
  3:44pm David in London:

Handy, do give my regards to the Pumpmeister when you next speak to him.
Miss G, some of my tapes were quite ancient and I didn’t lose any during the transfer. Good luck!
  3:45pm Miss G:

OK and one more dumb question to the cognoscenti Failurites, some kind of app to "listen" to the songs and tell me what it is? i.e. I don't know the name of the song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:46pm chresti:

The WFMU app?
  3:47pm Miss G:

chresti, it's some kind of magic musical service. . .*L* I saw my niece do it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:48pm spodiodi:

Carmichael, chresti -- same here but MUUUUCH better than yesterday (or the day before, at least by day's end.)
Yesterday we had the windows, blinds, and curtains closed all day long. so stuffy. Windows now open, but it's still kinda stinky.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:49pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I copped 'Rawk' off Julian Cope's mighty website when that was a sustaining oasis - tho he probably applied it more specifically. Just get bored with 'Rock' ...same with Cool & Kewl...
See 'Rumble' absolutely! Validating to me - & a buzz. Good double bill maybe with 'The King' using Elvis as metaphor for Murika ...but problem with Good Double Bills is I actually never sit through two...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:49pm Handy Haversack:

How far off from you all are the various fires, spod, chresti, Carm?
Avatar 3:49pm TDK60:

Sorry to hear about all those fires Chresti, Carm, Spodi. I heard they number 367.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:49pm Handy Haversack:

Miss G, like Shazaam?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:50pm mariano:

Ah, I see, Handy. Not familiar with that area but I had a friend in Saratoga I used to visit, we'd sometimes go to Lake George. Beautiful part of the state. And yeah PaulRobeson, Saratoga's an interesting town.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:50pm spodiodi:

in in SF propa... let me find a (horrifying) map graphic from yesterday...
  3:51pm Miss G:

Handy oh thank you. I was going to say "it's like a Genie/djinn who knows your song. . ." yes, that must be it. I hope it works on these DJ sets on cassette. And to all in the SF area, Good Vibrations to all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:52pm spodiodi:

Handy: wfmu.org... (stolen yestrday from the terrible local rag)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:52pm mariano:

Yeah, what Handy said. Up until very recently you could type "What song is this" into the Google search bar and it would basically do like Shazaam, but they stopped doing it for some reason.

Spodi: heat wave in San Francisco in the summer? That is odd. One thing I miss about living there was the cool weather. Great for walking and biking.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:52pm chris:

hi Fabio and folks. the Masaki Batoh is a banger.

and, air quality and ash bad here, too. wind has been mostly favorable, but today... sigh. we're about a crow's four miles from 1500 acre 0% contained fire in Pt Reyes Natl Seashore.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:53pm spodiodi:

hi chris! thanks for the report... been wondering about everyone localish to me
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:54pm chresti:

Oh no, chris!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:54pm spodiodi:

mariano, it's all relative. i've been trying to keep quiet while everyone else is melting.... we had a couple of 85-ish high temp days here (when carm was seeing 107, for example.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:55pm chris:

saw a photo in the chronicle of the air quality yesterday in the bay. holy shit.

yeah, chresti... wind coming our way is not good. but the fire still has a long way to come before we're threatened.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:55pm spodiodi:

i generally throw a fir if we hit 80 (this is a big part of why i moved to sf)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:55pm Carmichael:

@chris, I'm between the fires in Vacaville and Nevada County. Pretty (un)healthy dose of smoke for the last few days, getting worse it seems.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:56pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Lived in Santa Barbara 16 years - the feels yerknow...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:56pm chris:

@ chris, chresti, spodiodi, Carmichael, other California dwellers -- every day i have been hearing reports on the fires, highest recorded temperature ever in Death Valley, blistering heat waves -- all the time wishing that i could somehow send you the genuinely nice weather we have been having here (NYC/NJ area)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:00pm spodiodi:

i'd lose at the log rolling thing, mariano. however, the speed sawing always makes me dream
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:01pm spodiodi:

i have my usual hoodie on and about to close windows because chilly currently 67 degrees f here
Avatar 4:01pm Hubig Pie:

That Myrrors track was mightee fine indeed
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:02pm chresti:

Spodi, in sf, no one has ac. So 80s, 90s is very uncomfortable.
  4:02pm David in London:

Spodiodi, I think you have it in you to become a champion at curling.
Avatar 4:02pm βrian:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:04pm mariano:

Curling, yes - talk about a nice, cool environment. Maybe I'll try to open a curlink (rink?) in New Orleans, but it'd be a big hit in summer.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:09pm PaulRobeson1920:

A fine, finee day in NYC
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:10pm mariano:

David, you can run the Runza racket at the rink. And no, spodi, it's been a surprisingly mild summer overall. Still pretty humid but there's usually a nice breeze. Sorry to hear about the hellish weather you and the other Accufornians are enduring.
  4:10pm David in London:

Spodiodi, can you pick me up on the way?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:11pm Carmichael:

  4:15pm Miss G:

Tomas I was wondering about that Wim Wenders film, you liked it? Maybe I'll check it out.
  4:16pm ?:

bye
Avatar 4:18pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Only familiar with Wenders' two big road films (alice in the cities & kings of the road) -- perfect sprawling epics totally devoid of plot. More films should be like this.
  4:19pm David in London:

Mariano, cool! I’ll need Handy as my strong-arm man.

Rev. Turnip Druid, my favorite WW is "The State of Things" but it is hard to find. . .I don't understand why. But this one "Palermo" is supposed to be like the road films you mentioned, so. . .
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:20pm Handy Haversack:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:21pm spodiodi:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:24pm steveo:

Hi Handy, I thought of you today as I biked over Newtown Creek, twice. No small craft were observed in use, however.
  4:24pm Miss G:

What a groovy set this is. Perfect soundtrack to mentally traveling to Saratoga Springs, to the windy wildfires in CA, then to the humid N.O.. . .and back to the HotBox (which always reminds me of "Guys and Dolls.")
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:24pm mariano:

David: he'd have to change his name to Fisty. Or maybe Stabby. At least at work.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:24pm PaulRobeson1920:

Nice
  4:26pm David in London:

Mariano, what’s in the haversack? A cudgel and several switchblades...
“I don’t get tough with people. Stabby does.”
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:29pm mariano:

Haha! Maybe something more vague though, like Boom Boom. Or Stab Stab. Whoops.
  4:29pm WM:

@Miss. G.: I think Wender's best film is The Goalie's Anxiety at the Penalty Kick, which is based on the novel by Peter Handke. A few nights ago I got very lucky and saw on Cinephobe.tv Handke's film adaptation of his own novel Left Handed Woman (which was produced by Wenders).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:32pm mariano:

What David Lynch movie is that deranged-looking cowboy in the photo from? Looks like the Big Tuna section of "Wild at Heart."

I used to work at a large midwestern university library. One of my jobs was processing donated materials to see if it should be added to the collection. One time someone anonymously dropped off a plastic grocery bag full of Star Trek fan fiction zines from the 70s. It was awesome to look at. There were all sorts of intergalactic love stories including trysts between Spock and Kirk.

Star Trek: TNG, DS9, Farscape, The Expanse... all shows with really wobbly first seasons (downright terrible in the case of TNG) but they all became great. In the era of streaming, it's worth mentioning because *everybody* starts from the beginning and watches in order instead of catching a random one in syndicated reruns. But if you do that w/TNG then you see the worst episodes first and you get a terrible impression of the show.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:13pm brainiac:

@Miss G: David in London is correct. He (Ullman) was supposed to represent the US government (noting the Kennedyesque hairstyle). The scene was supposed to be Kubric's reenactment of the deal he made to fake the moon landing in which he (Kubric) felt he had been dominated and coerced into (penis/papertray).
  5:13pm Miss G:

mariano, I signed up for MUBI for a month, saw an amazing film "Dawson City: Frozen Time" with recovered silent films made by the great Bill Morrison ("Decasia.") But most of the films were "too much of the muchness" for me right now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:14pm Stanley:

@mariano: I signed up to mubi for a few years. Their programming just got more and more obscure arthouse for me. In the end it wasn't good value but for six quid, I think, you could, in theory, watch thirty films.
