Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:57pm Irene Trudel:

Thanks Henry!

Peeking in early to say hey!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:59pm Irene Trudel:

Hey james! Welcome all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:00pm doctorjazz:

I don't know, something fishy about those folks in the picture...
  2:01pm DavidJ:

Off to a good start!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:01pm Julie:

(just learned a manual fade out is better than the program's fade out. Yikes sorry guys)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:02pm chresti:

Hi Irene and company!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:02pm chresti:

Hi Peter!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:03pm Irene Trudel:

The show's just started swimmingly, doctorjazz! No worries, Julie. It was all good, leading out of one of my fave Laura Nyro tunes. Hi also to you, DavidJ and chresti!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:03pm WR:

Hello Irene and Peter. Hi to all y'all drummer streamers.
  2:05pm Andrea Eis:

Hi Irene and Peter - so happy to be able to listen!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:06pm Irene Trudel:

Welcome WR and Andrea!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:07pm deesat:

Hey Irene and Peter! Cleaning up cat litter while I listen!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:09pm Irene Trudel:

deesat! One of my "favorite" morning chores-- cleaning up after our trio of kitties.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:12pm Julie:

haha cat litter
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:12pm Julie:

Irene I notice that both you and Charlie tend to start with jazz
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:14pm doctorjazz:

Sex Mob! Another fave (anything Steven Bernstein is involved in becomes a favorite). Big nod to Ellington.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:15pm doctorjazz:

Leaving work, try to catch up later.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:16pm Irene Trudel:

Sex Mob is playing a gig at The Falcon, Marlboro, NY, Sunday the 23rd, FYI
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:17pm Irene Trudel:

Julie, this show will be mostly jazz in deference to Dave and his audience (plus, I do love jazz).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:18pm Gina Bacon:

Happy Saturday, Irene, Peter and all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:20pm doctorjazz:

Good to hear, maybe I can get there. (Last saw them at the old City Winery with guests Nels Cline and John Medeski, took my older daughter. They played a very "out" set (in deference to Nels, I'd bet). I loved it, Mr daughter, not so much...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:22pm Doug Schulkind:

Hello hello, Irene, Peter, and all you big-eared beauties!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:23pm Irene Trudel:

Happy Saturday to you, Gina! Looking forward to your show later. And 'Hi' to you, Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:32pm Julie:

@Irene ah I see! But you do often start with it.
  2:33pm Dean:

Just stumbled across this from one of my favorite pianists, Alan Broadbent: https://www.jazzviews.net/alan-broadbent---musicians-playlist.html Peter's dad gets a shout-out. Worth noting, too, that OK produced Alan's albums with Lee Konitz at Jazz Bakery.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:35pm Irene Trudel:

Thanks for this, Dean! I almost played a Broadbent/Konitz piece today. I'll save it for Monday's show.
Avatar 2:38pm duke:

Beautiful stuff today.
  2:38pm Dean:

That'll be grand!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:38pm WR:

A great Tyner trio with Ron Carter on bass and Tony Williams on drums.
  2:41pm Gina Bacon:

I really love McCoy Tyner.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:47pm Doug Schulkind:

Was "Call to the Freaks" Steven Bernstein's homage to Luis Russell, I wonder?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:49pm coelacanth∅:

greetings Irene and Peter and Free worldfolk
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:54pm Irene Trudel:

Thanks Duke, and welcome coelacanth∅! Doug, I don't know if it's an homage-- no mention in the liners.
  3:07pm Dean:

Artist (painter, sculptor, photographer) Robert Hite is alive and well.
  3:09pm Dean:

Vocalist (Canned Heat) Robert Hite is not.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:10pm Irene Trudel:

Dean, actually not. We were just checking and Hite (the visual artist) passed in May from Pancreatic Cancer. www.legacy.com...
  3:13pm Dean:

Oh, my, that is sad. And so his site, featuring a number of examples of his remarkable work, lingers on, even noting an exhibition slated to extend through the end of the year. Not that galleries are being frequented these days...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:18pm Mx. Granny (e/em):

Greetings, Irene and WFMU folx
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:18pm Irene Trudel:

Yes, Dean. Here's a link to that tribute concert with Sex Mob: www.facebook.com...
  3:24pm Dean:

Had a premonition this would follow the Nichols.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:24pm Irene Trudel:

Hi Mx. Granny!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:26pm Summer and Michael and Sylvia:

Extra Irene! Yay!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:28pm doctorjazz:

Driving home , listening, had to pull over to comment. Great album, this Baker (Dean hipped3 me to it, thanks). What chops! (He had another album of his takes on Monk, also fine). Ok, back to the road (home soon).
Avatar 3:28pm duke:

Irene do you get paid overtime?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:28pm Irene Trudel:

G'day, Summer and Michael and Sylvia!
  3:28pm Dean:

Duck Baker's full given name is Richard Royal Baker, IV.
  3:32pm Dean:

So glad you like it, doctorjazz! And thanks, I&P, for reminding me about the new Baker album. Meant to acquire it earlier in the week.

Second track on the new Baker: Dr. Jazz!
  3:32pm Dean:

I have at least four copies of Waltz for Debby, vinyl and CD.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:41pm Irene Trudel:

Thanks Dean! About two years ago I had Duck in for an interview and live performance on WFMU. Lovely guy and so knowledgeable about all kinds of music. We could've talked for days! Archived here: wfmu.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:42pm Irene Trudel:

I'm gonna play something from Duck's new one on Monday's show.
  3:44pm ?:

Just tuned in, sounds GDish
  3:45pm Dean:

Might also sound Beefheart-ish, if I remember correctly from a Mallard track played earlier this week on the station.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:45pm doctorjazz:

I remember reading reviews by Baker (think it was for Jazz Times), which were terrifically written, and covered the entire scope of jazz/improvised music. Don't think he still writes for them, though, but I really enjoyed them.
Will have to listen to that archive.
  3:47pm Dean:

https://jazztimes.com/author/duck-baker/
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:49pm Irene Trudel:

And that archived Baker interview was what I could fit into an hour-long slot, which is what I was hosting that summer. I easily had another half hour or so I could've kept in.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:52pm Irene Trudel:

Dean, you are correct-- Mallard essentially was The Magic Band. Never got enough credit as players back in the day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:52pm doctorjazz:

And thanks for that link, @Dean.
  3:52pm Dean:

Was wondering if Baker had ever played with that other DB guitarist Bailey. Yes, he has, and I'd forgotten that I have the record, Ducks Palace. Will spin later today! Also features Zorn, Rudd, and Baptista.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:52pm doctorjazz:

Man, Jaco is some presence on bass!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:02pm doctorjazz:

And Ibrahim-saw him the last Tone he played The Jazz Standard (took my wife to see Ekaya at Sweet Basil's on our1st date. She should've seem what was coming then...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:04pm Irene Trudel:

Ibrahim is so amazing! I've seen him a few times and really love how he plays a seamless set start to finish without applause breaks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:04pm doctorjazz:

Carlos Ward, I believe, fabulous!
  4:06pm Dean:

Per the liner notes in Ducks Palace, John Zorn inspired and produced the Baker Nichols album.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:19pm Doug Schulkind:

Pat Metheny is an artist I have always appreciated more in theory than in practice. I realize this represents my own failings. I'm working on them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:20pm Charlie:

Folk music!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:24pm Irene Trudel:

Indeed, Charlie! Doug, I've been a big fan of Metheny for years but as with any artist, not everything is to my taste.
  4:25pm otto:

sweet!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:27pm doctorjazz:

Ages ago, I was studying jazz guitar with a fellow in the Village, who had studied with Jim Hall, and we went to see Hall at the Village Vanguard. Between sets, Hall sat down with us for a few minutes, and told us he had just played about Metheny, and RAVED about his playing. I was lukewarm up until that point, but I had to listen and appreciate him more after that (and I did).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:29pm doctorjazz:

(My Metheny appreciation went better than my jazz guitar, alas.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:31pm Irene Trudel:

Well, doctorjazz, I'm in that same category as a guitarist. Let's just say it's better if I listen than try to play.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:37pm doctorjazz:

Fabulous band here, Dewey Redmond, Charlie Haden, Michael Brecker, Jack DeJohnette.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:43pm doctorjazz:

Stream breaking in.
I just got an email about a Joe Lovano on line streaming show from the Vanguard tonight, figured I'd post the link.
villagevanguard.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:43pm Irene Trudel:

Cool! Thanks for the Lovano tip.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:48pm doctorjazz:

Thanks, guys, great show (you can do jazz shows WHENEVER YOU LIKE, fine by me!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:48pm Gina Bacon:

Yes, this has been so great. Thank you both!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:48pm doctorjazz:

I remember the name, Jerry Hahn, from ages ago, but not much more.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:49pm Irene Trudel:

As we wrap up, I wanted to mention again that Peter will be a guest on The Stork Club tomorrow at noon, talking about Bill Evans. As always, thanks for listening in. I'll catch you all again Monday.at noon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:50pm doctorjazz:

(The Lovano is rebroadcast, I believe, of a show from July, in a trip with Ben Street and Andrew Cyrille)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:51pm Doug Schulkind:

Thanks for a wonderful show, Irene and Peter! More wonderful radio is coming up tomorrow on your 24-hour Drummer Stream!!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:57pm Gina Bacon:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:58pm chresti:

Thanks Irene and Peter!
Avatar 5:00pm duke:

Thanks Irene and Peter. Great show
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:18pm coelacanth∅:

(belated) Thanks Irene!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:37pm WR:

I passed out, er, started to nap early in the show. Nice to see Duck Baker getting some love. Fantastic player, really good guy.
Avatar 3:31pm Sean in Bristol UK:
