So I like "Undead Lust." WHAT?

Also, Keilidh, here's far too long a poem:

Galway Kinnell - When One Has Lived a Long Time Alone

When one has lived a long time alone
one refrains from swatting the fly
and lets him go, and one hesitates to strike
the mosquito, though more than willing go slap
the flesh under her, and one lifts the toad
from the pit too deep for him to hop out of
and carries him to the grass, without minding
the toxic urine he slicks his body with,
and one envelops, in a towel, the swift
who fell down the chimney and knocks herself
against the window glass and releases her outside
and watches her fly free, a life line flung at reality,
when one has lived a long time alone.

When one has lived a long time alone,
one grabs the snake behind the head
and holds him until he stops trying to stick
the orange tongue, which splits at the end
into two black filaments and jumps out
like a fire-eater's belches and has little
in common with the pimpled pink lump that shapes
sounds and sleeps inside the human mouth,
into one's flesh, and clamps it between his jaws,
letting the gaudy tips show, as children do
when concentrating, and as very likely
one down oneself, without knowing it,
when one has lived a long time alone.

When one has lived a long time alone,
among regrets so immense the past occupies
nearly all the room there is in consciousness,
one notices in the snake's eyes, which look back
without paying less attention to the future,
the first coating of the opaque milky-blue
leucoma snakes to get when about to throw
their skins and become new––meanwhile continuing,
of course, to grow old––the exact bleu passé
that discolors the corneas of the blue-eyed
when they lie back at last and look for heaven,
a blurring one can see means they will never find it,
when one has lived a long time alone.

When one has lived a long time alone,
one holds the snake near a loudspeaker disgorging
gorgeous sound and watches him crook
his forepart into four right angles
as though trying to slow down the music
flowing through him, in order to absorb it
the milk of paradise into the flesh,
and now a glimmering appears at his mouth,
such a drop of intense fluid as, among humans,
could form after long exiting at the tip
of the the penis, and as he straightens himself out
he has the pathos one finds in the penis,
when one has loved a long time alone.

When one has lived a long time alone,
one can fall to poring upon a creature,
contrasting its eternity's-face to one's own
full of hours, taking note of each difference,
exaggerating it, making it everything,
until the other is utterly other, and then,
with hard effort, possibly with tongue sticking out,
going back over each one once again
and cancelling it, seeing nothing now
but likeness, until . . . half an hour later
one starts awake, taken aback at how eagerly
one swoons into the happiness of kinship,
when one has lived a long time alone.

When one has lived a long time alone
and listens at morning to mourning doves
sound their kyrie eleison, or the small thing
spiritualizing onto one's shoulder cry "pewit-phoebe!"
or peabody-sparrows at midday send schoolboys'
whistlings across the field, or at dusk, undamped,
unforgiving clinks, as from stonemasons' chisels,
or on trees' backs tree frogs scratch the thighs'
needfire awake, or from the frog pond pond frogs
raise their ave verum corpus—listens to those
who hop or fly call down upon us the mercy
of other tongues—one hears them as inner voices,
when one has lived a long time alone.

When one has lived a long time alone,
one knows only consciousness consummates,
and as the conscious one among these others
uttering compulsory cries of being here—
the least flycatcher witching up "che-bec,"
or redheaded woodpecker clanging out his
music from a metal drainpipe, or ruffed grouse
drumming "thump thrump thrump thrump-thrump-
through the treees, all of them in time's
unfolding trying to cry themselves into self-knowing—
one knows one is here to hear them into shining,
when one has lived a long time alone.

When one has loved a long time alone,
one likes alike the pig, who brooks no deferment
of gratification, and the porcupine, or thorned pig,
who enters the cellar but not the house itself
because of eating down the cellar stairs on the way up,
and one likes the worm, who by bunching herself together
and expanding rubs her way through the ground,
no less than the butterfly, who totters full of worry
among the day-lilies, as they darken,
and more and more one finds one likes
any other species better than one's own,
which has gone amok, making one self-estranged,
when one has lived a long time alone.

When one has lived a long time alone,
sour, misanthropic, one fits to one's defiance
the satanic boast—It is better to reign
in hell than to submit on earth—
and forgets one's kind, as does the snake,
who has stopped trying to escape and moves
at ease across one's body, slumping into its contours,
adopting its temperature, and abandons hope
of the sweetness of friendship or love
—before long can barely remember what they are—
and covets the stillness in organic matter,
in a self-dissolution one may not know how to halt,
when one has lived a long time alone.

When one has loved a long time alone,
and the hermit thrush calls and there is an answer,
and the bullfrog, head half out of water, remembers
the exact sexual cantillations of his first spring,
and the snake slides over the threshold and disappears
among the stones, one sees they all live
to mate with their kind, and one knows,
after a long time of solitude, after the many steps taken
away from one's kind, toward the kingdom of strangers,
the hard prayer inside one's own singing
is to come back, if one can, to one's own,
a world almost lost, in the exile that deepens,
when one has lived a long time alone.

When one has lived a long time alone,
one wants to live again among men and women,
to return to that place where one's ties with the human
broke, where the disquiet of death and now
also of history glimmers its firelight on faces,
where the gaze of the new baby looks past the gaze
of the great-granny, and where lovers speak,
on lips blowsy from kissing, that language
the same in each mouth, and like birds at daybreak
blether the song that is both earth's and heaven's,
until the sun has risen, and they stand
in a light of being united: kingdom come,
when one has lived a long time alone.

Well, you sound great, whatever the hell you were doing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:38am Handy Haversack:

It does its job, Mariano. As Bill W pointed, Galway Kinnell is not without his problems.

Keilidh, we're three one-line D&D recaps behind:

7/11: The Fungi and the Petalhead, Minus Briney (but plus a shambling mound and the sap dream!)

7/18: Be careful: that's definitely a gateway drug

7/25: Lichin' ain't easy.

And that brings us current. There were a lot of flesh-melting moths, some Owl Dream, and a liberal dose of "that's all speak with plants does?"! Also, we had some beers. And to show I'm not a prude: the gateway drug actually opened a gateway the spirit spiders tried to pull Erras through.

LOVE that Husbandry album. Picked it up after hearing it on your show.

Do Not Stand At My Grave And Weep - Mary Elizabeth Frye
Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there; I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow,
I am the sun on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.

A good friend of mine said no and went to jail. His trial was right next to the Mansons trial. Because he was a federal prisoner, he was brought to the court house in leg irons and had to step around the Manson girls who were sprawled all over the sidewalk.
Avatar 1:05am slugluv1313:

i remember Manson on the cover of Life magazine, and my younger sister sticking pins in his eyes (she was only seven, but totally "got it")
and yeah, back then you saw the Vietnam War on TV constantly, body bags coming "home" daily . . . not sure if kids are even taught that one of the reasons there were so many protests against the war was b/c kids were being drafted at 18 -- but you could not vote until you were 21 . . . and NOW it is apparently illegal to have photographs of the caskets of those killed in combat in the media
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:06am mariano:

Damn, Franco! Hope it worked out for him.
Avatar 1:06am slugluv1313:

and yes, assassinations, police beating the crap outta protesters . . .
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:08am Franco Twinkie:

Yes it did. It's a great story and I'm trying him to tell it to the camera, but he's resisting me!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:10am coelacanth∅:

manson's ideas weren't so far out, in my opinion; but killing off a handful of piggies wasn't going to do shit. the piggies were killing off Martin and Malcom and John and Bobby. those in charge of those murders (factions of the united states government) were the appropriate targets.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:11am Franco Twinkie:

We have never stopped hearing apocryphal stories out here. It was a big fucking deal.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:13am mariano:

Glad to hear, Franco. coela: Didn't Manson believe the world was hollow and had an entrance at the North Pole, and that after he and the family sparked a race war with their murders they'd go hide out there and emerge later to rule over the victorious black people?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:14am mariano:

*I've only ever read "Helter Skelter" as a source so I don't know how much of that is Bugliosi embellishing and how much was their actual belief.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:15am Handy Haversack:

Keilidh, do you know the Baru Cormorant books by Set Dickinson. One major "strain" in the plot is that cancer is an intelligent force that possesses people to make the world a better place for cancer.

Heady. Stuff.

Manson used bullshit rhetoric about a coming race war to justify his narcissism. It even worked on the cops. What a country.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:16am Handy Haversack:

haha mariano did he?! he was an idiot! and i certainly don't mean ALL his ideas
- i just mean the opposition to class suppression and capitalism (etc) which were the ideas i thought were being referred to
... generally i think he was an egomaniacal asshole and a fool.
Avatar 1:18am Keilidh:

why are u guys getting pressed about manson!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20am mariano:

coela: Oh, ok, whew! Had me worried there for a sec ;)
  1:20am BH:

meanwhile I just started watching Street Fight (a documentary about Cory Booker's first mayoral race) and I'm popping each time something happens with Cory going door to door that is vaguely like something I've experienced volunteering for campaigns in the past
Avatar 1:21am Chris Crash:

Oh my god I just finished watching all the Stray Cat Rock movies a few weeks ago, Meiko Kaji is a god
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:21am Franco Twinkie:

I use to go out to Death Valley a lot, but we NEVER wanted to go up the Golar Wash, because there were stories about his follower still hiding out waiting for the curious. The desert is full of unhinged people and the place is so vast, But yeah, the hole to the middle of the earth....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:22am coelacanth∅:

yes (mariano @1.14) i don't know that much about him either. lots of lies and embellishment made. i wasn't there and i don't care very much. just another asshole.
but i have watched a few interviews with him and others involved and have my opinions based on that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:23am Handy Haversack:

Franco, when you get out of town for a day or a weekend, where do you go? Desert? Coast?
Avatar 1:24am northguineahills:

I'm checking out in 10, thanks Kelilidh!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:25am coelacanth∅:

Keilidh it's the anniversary of "the murders".
brought up ~12.45
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:26am Handy Haversack:

(Usually I do my gaming prep during Hits from the Crypt, but Kate was so glad to hear you were back that she's stayed up to listen. So Mr. Pumpy et al. will just have to be happy with whatever the Handy hangover delivers on its own!)
Avatar 1:26am Keilidh:

First night listening. Love it.

A good friend of mine works on Entertainment Tonight, and when they went inside to interview Charlie, he went up to the sound engineer who had some big road boxes and whispered: "Hey buddy, get me out of here and I'll make your dreams come true." They had it on a loop that they would play in the office.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29am coelacanth∅:

oh man i want that loop!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29am mariano:

Oooh, The Witch was a good one. The horror aside it was a great reconstruction of 17th-century colonial New England.

ien oblique: There's so much to discover, including a massive crypt of years' worth of archives.
  1:30am ien oblique:

Fabulous. Thank you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:30am Franco Twinkie:

Handy@1:30 Both! I'm a desert rat who loves the cool Northern beaches.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:31am Handy Haversack:

Mariano, I thought it was a necessary animal-liberation parable centered on a dude who was such a shitty farmer even the Massachusetts colonialists kicked him out. You sow the rye that shitty, you reap the ergot.

Nice, Franco. One day, we are going to see these sights!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:35am Franco Twinkie:

Handy, one of my guys who I go out to Joshua Tree with was pestering me to go, and I said Relax, the place is going to be there forever. He snapped back - yeah but I'm not!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:36am Handy Haversack:

One of my good friends here lived in L.A. for years, and it seems like folks there who can get places at Joshua Tree like folks here who can get places in the Catskills.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:42am Franco Twinkie:

Probably. The town of Joshua Tree has an internet cafe like anywhere else, and all sorts of shit hipsters need, but one can still sleep on the ground and cook your own food, as we do, but it's getting harder.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:45am Handy Haversack:

Way of the dang world.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:47am Franco Twinkie:

We couldn't go out this past Spring. It was closed to camping
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:47am mariano:

Handy: have you seen "Fanny Lye Deliver'd"? Set in 17th-century Shropshire, Cromwell-era puritanism vs a more radical free-love sect of the kind that popped up here and there during the Reformation. Maxine Peake and Charles Dance are really amazing in their roles, but it's frustratingly uneven in quality and tone overall. Worth a watch though.
Avatar 1:48am slugluv1313:

@ ien oblique -- welcome to the bountiful joys of WFMU!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:49am Handy Haversack:

No, Mariano, hadn't heard of. Will find -- thanks!

Here's the Guardian review: www.theguardian.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:50am Handy Haversack:

(I just assume you've seen /A Field in England/.)
Avatar 1:50am slugluv1313:

damn, how did i miss The Witch?! animal liberation AND horror!!!
Avatar 1:50am Kelly Jones:

The Thing! Greatest Kurt Russell movie ever. My art teacher played it for us in class in high school (the 80's!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:51am Handy Haversack:

Just add a "Look at that cover!" column to the playlist. Kenzo can handle this!

Kelly Jones, you and I both know that the REAL hero of that movie is J&B!
Avatar 1:52am Kelly Jones:

The Witch was awesome too. William Berger recommended it to me. RIP.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:52am Franco Twinkie:

You sound so peppy, Keillidh! You sure weren't at the spa with cucumber slices on your eyes?
Avatar 1:52am Kelly Jones:

OMG Handy, totally, LOL.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:53am mariano:

Yes, "A Field in England" is mind-blowing! "Kill List" is really good too but so brutal.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:54am Handy Haversack:

Just, credit where credit is due, Kelly Jones. I for one would share a foxhole with J&B during pretty much ANY alien/eldritch invasion.

Mariano, forwarding my "English Folk Horror" list to you now!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:55am mariano:

Cool, thanks Handy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:03am mariano:

Got the list, thanks! Glad to see "Ballad of Tam Lin" on there, that is peak 60s (though it came out in '70) with a gorgeous soundtrack by Pentangle.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:07am Franco Twinkie:

Welcome back Keillidh. I must go under so I can get up early and hit the farmers market before all the super spreaders get there and breath death onto the organic peaches. G'night all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:08am mariano:

'Night Franco.
  2:08am ignatatus666:

Almost forgot
You asked what are we reading or listening to?
I finished listening to the 4 cd mausoleum set by the band Killer from Belgium. That is a killer box set. I grew up in the 80’s we never heard these guys and the music was excellent. Somewhere between Judas Priest and Nasty Savage.
Where did I get that box set?
Avatar 2:10am Keilidh:

Night Franco!!
Avatar 2:10am mb:

Yo Iggy666. What is the word on the streets?
Avatar 2:11am Kelly Jones:

@Handy...I'd take the J&B but I'd prefer the MM (Maker's Mark)
Avatar 2:13am Chris Crash:

LOVE this city pop bounce
Avatar 2:13am slugluv1313:

Good Night Franco!
HELL YEAH! organic peaches are killer right now, ENJOY!

Pretty empty now
Just sitting it out
Waiting on those round trip cop n drops
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:22am mariano:

Mr. Pumpy! Ignatatus lol, you know the score, huh? [no pun intended]
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:22am Mr. Pumpy:

slug, Handy, mariano...yo yo...
  2:22am ignatatus666:

That was a pleasant surprise!!
I didn’t expect that music.
Back then we relied on word of mouth and fanzines. A few college stations. But those were mostly for punk and hardcore
Avatar 2:23am dan in wisconsin:

Weird but good mix tonight. Only thing that could make it better is some DEVO or some Stranglers or some Pain Teens.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:24am Mr. Pumpy:

Handy...fold, bet or check! sheesh!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:24am Mr. Pumpy:

dan is DJing tonight?

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:27am Mr. Pumpy:

This song is FIRE as the youngsters say. Thanks, Keilidh!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:28am mariano:

Wow, something from "Screaming for Vengeance," very cool!
  2:28am ignatatus666:

All too well. This area used to be a hotbed. They went and cleaned it up. So nights will never be what they were. Night drivers back then were about 2 dozen in this area now it’s me and 1/2 others. UBER and lyft here are few and far between thanks to the Pademic
Whenever they had major sweeps in the area we would all say
There goes the business.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:29am Mr. Pumpy:

Downing and Tipton really craft their solos on this album. They trade off and make them mean something so effectively.
Avatar 2:29am dan in wisconsin:

Electric Eye would have me staring into the Keyhole satellite array outside my kitchen window, but I'll settle for Chains.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:30am Mr. Pumpy:

Priest...truncated. Bummer
  2:31am ignatatus666:

The app is way behind the live fm
Avatar 2:31am Keilidh:

Electric Eye would be played tooooo often! Have to hold myself back!
Avatar 2:32am dan in wisconsin:

Why aren't there more songs about satellites? Space Junk, Satallite of Love, Electric Eye, that one Dead Milkmen song......and many others, I'm sure.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:32am Mr. Pumpy:

Never too much Electric Eye. Never! (It's watching)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:33am mariano:

Ignatatus: I remember way back feeling the need to make excuses for the round trips: "I have to, uh pick up my keys that I left at my friend's house" till I realized "Why would they give a toss either way?"

Mr. P: Yeah, the solos on the whole album are masterpieces.

Keilidh: "Riding on the Wind"! I made the part right after the solo ("Ridin'... on the wind!") the soundtrack to the skydive I did where I had myself filmed.
Avatar 2:35am Hubig Pie:

This be heavy
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:35am mariano:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:35am mariano:

*Its tearless retina, ffs...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:37am Mr. Pumpy:

@Keilidh, have you gotten into any of the new Imperial Triumphant? I stumbled upon it recently and liked what I heard. I think you may as well. Kenny Grohowski is over the top on drums.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:38am Mr. Pumpy:

@mariano...perhaps the best lyric ever follows..."I'm made of metal!"
Avatar 2:41am dan in wisconsin:

This song has a similar cadence to The Holy War by Thin Lizzy.
Avatar 2:42am Keilidh:

i have not, pumpy!

love thin lizzy!!
Avatar 2:42am mb:

Pretty soon it will be Mastodon listening weather. Looking forward to revisiting that catalog. Right now its all about that Primitive Man and Caustic Wounds. Thx for those DJ.

Avatar 2:43am Keilidh:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:46am Mr. Pumpy:

Funny you should mention NOISE...Imperial T are bringing plenty with the new one. Damn, this Swamp Witch kills! Does anyone else see a Voivod image in the artwork?
Avatar 2:46am slugluv1313:

hey Mr. Pumpy!
hanging in there, happy to be here in The Crypt
how is everything with you?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:47am Mr. Pumpy:

Ups and downs, strikes and gutters. I too am happy to be "cryptin'"!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:47am Jane Lane:

I once had someone yell out to me “swamp witch” while I was walking... it’s a compliment, I know it
Avatar 2:48am mb:

2021 will be the most brutal if these 2020 releases are any clue. Gonna be all about new tones and "we told you so" lyrics. Back to what my Old Man would call that "Kill your mother stuuf". Kill Them All kinda ish, i hope.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:48am Mr. Pumpy:

Jane...was that in Weehawken?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:49am Mr. Pumpy:

I wish this was on wax...doesn't seem so. Crunchy doomified death metalosity.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:50am Jane Lane:

Sadly no it was in Bensonhurst Brooklyn, good times and very strange times - what can I say the memory makes me nostalgic
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:50am Mr. Pumpy:
