Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:01am fred:

Good morning Jeff and all
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:01am WR:

Any moment I'm going to be asked if I'm going to get up and be productive or continue hiding from the day in bed. I'll reply, okay, Destination: Out!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:02am Jeff Golick:

Good afternoon, @fred!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:02am Jeff Golick:

Up and at 'em, @WR!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:02am WR:

Hi Fred.
  9:03am DJpeterDE:

Top o’ the morning
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:03am Doug Schulkind:

Good morning! Yoga for my ears!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:03am doctorjazz:

D.O., Let's Go!
Avatar 9:04am Listener Gregory:

Morning, Jeff. Today's theme: Music to do laundry by! Perfect.
Avatar 9:05am hyde:

hello!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:05am WR:

And hello to all. Will be listening but likely not commenting much.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:06am Jeff Golick:

@Doug! @doctorjazz! @DJpeterDE! @Listener Gregory! @hyde!
Avatar 9:08am Listener Gregory:

@WR, perfect, as I will be commenting but likely not listening much.
Avatar 9:10am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

By contrast I shall be prohibited from commenting too much only by preparing eggs & possibly a bit of listening.
Loves Monkness so much.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11am Jeff Golick:

Same.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11am Jeff Golick:

Hey, there, @Revolution Rabbit Nov63!
Avatar 9:12am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...& reading other comments to similar effect.
...& now for something completely different.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14am Doug Schulkind:

Is there a more universally adored pianist by other pianists than Barry Harris? (I know the answer but don't want to spoil it.)
  9:15am DJpeterDE:

Is the theme... backwards tributes?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16am Jeff Golick:

Well that didn't take long, @DJpeterDE. Bit looser than that...but yeah. Yojne!
  9:20am DJpeterDE:

Hahaha, lucky guess!

I am aware of tunes named Emanon by Dizzy, Wynton M., and Wayne. Must be others too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21am Jeff Golick:

One of Wayne Shorter's recent albums was called "Emanon."
  9:26am DJpeterDE:

I think Ben Sidran once asked Miles where the name of this tune came from... Miles demurred...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26am Doug Schulkind:

Backwards song titles makes me think of Sonny Rollins' "Airegin."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27am Jeff Golick:

Oh shoot, now you tell me, @Doug.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28am Jeff Golick:

@DJpeterDE: yeah, re Miles. There's some conjecture that Sidran was also the name of his tailor or something like that?
  9:30am DJpeterDE:

That would be a good job, tailor to Miles Davis. Until Betty came along.
Avatar 9:30am Sem:

Hello, Jeff the G, d:O folk, and jazzists in general.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30am doctorjazz:

Fine bop-ish set going here.
Avatar 9:30am Listener Gregory:

Nardis was first played at a Cannonball Adderly date that both Bill Evans and Miles were on. Miles is credited with the song; he never is known to have played it again. Evans played it 10,000 times. Uhhhh....
Avatar 9:31am Listener Gregory:

Interesting to compare that early recording of Nardis to Evans's later ones, which were furious performances at a much faster tempo.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33am Jeff Golick:

Ahoy, @Sem!
Avatar 9:34am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Yeah Nardis spoken of so much as an outstanding standard - but I wouldn't know it by name
- appreciate this program even for schooling me in fundaments...
Friend I had schooled me a lot on Jazz was strictly into Straight Ahead - & his faves are Bill Evans & Charlie Haden...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35am doctorjazz:

Spoke too soon (though it can never be a bad thing to segue to Halvorson). Nicely arranged.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36am doctorjazz:

Sounds like a big band, just a couple of extra horns.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39am doctorjazz:

Link to the Halvorson

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39am doctorjazz:

(Comes as a double LP, sheesh...)
Avatar 9:40am hyde:

This is great
Avatar 9:41am Listener Gregory:

Sheesh is right.
Correction: spelling should be AdderlEy. I regret the error.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41am doctorjazz:

(45 RPM double LP, no less...)
Avatar 9:42am Listener Gregory:

Double sheesh!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42am Jeff Golick:

Thanks for the link, @doc. Added to p(l)aylist.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46am doctorjazz:

Done and payed for, @Jeff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46am doctorjazz:

Sorry, LG...
  9:51am DJpeterDE:

This is great stuff. I think if Smoker and Golia as schools unto themselves. Relatively small circles, it feels like. Relatively being the key word. Why do I have that impression?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52am Jeff Golick:

I definitely think of Golia in those terms, holding it down on the West Coast. But I'm not sure I know enough about Smoker to even say...
Avatar 9:52am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Seems like 12"s @ 45rpm for better sound is a thing now?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56am doctorjazz:

Yup, Rev, has green for a while, actually, but now that vinyl has had its "resurgence", seems a decent amount of 12 inch 45 reissues are being released. Not much new music in that format (at least that I've noted). Of course, 12 inch 45 RPM dance singles were common during the disco era.
Avatar 9:57am Listener Gregory:

Say it ain’t so, Jeff!
Avatar 9:58am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Yup. Like the current big crazy box of The Stooges' 'Funhouse' is the whole album @ 45.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am doctorjazz:

Is it back to college time? Are they attending college this fall? (My younger daughter finished her last year of college this past spring sheltered here at home, taking online classes).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01am Doug Schulkind:

I loved Booker T's quiet tribute to Top Gnitlem. Subtle, but powerful statement.
Avatar 10:03am Listener Gregory:

You call it subtle—I call it eltbus.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03am Jeff Golick:

@doc: yes, 8/23 bringing college kid back to whatever college is now. 8/16 is just to take a breather.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04am doctorjazz:

Ok. Hguone is hguone!
Avatar 10:06am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...So every once in a while I get it in my head to no longer be thee most profligate clickystar person - & not just star everything I think is ok
- but only what I'd really like to notate & go back to
...problem with Jazz here is each & every one is a Musican I'm in deferential awe of...
I'll figure it out !...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06am doctorjazz:

My graduate is going to teach in a New Jersey school...not sure what the details are (they're supposed to announce it this week). Makes me quite nervous.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08am doctorjazz:

Rev, there's a star at the top next to the current show, lets you clicky star the whole episode. At one point, I go to that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08am doctorjazz:

So far, have also had to star everything.
Avatar 10:09am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

It's insane & malicious.
We need to shut everything down - & give support to get people & businesses & institutions through it.
Simple as that.
But - no. Politics.
Avatar 10:09am Listener Gregory:

You say tomato, I say otamot. Let’s call the whole thing off.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10am Jeff Golick:

Or we could call it ffo.
Avatar 10:11am Listener Gregory:

I would rather say Pho, but ok.
Avatar 10:12am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Yeah but not staring a track means it won't come up preclicked on another playlist for instance... I've seen staring a track as sort of a facebook Like of approval too - & I know some DJs do too...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12am doctorjazz:

I'd rather HAVE pho, but OK.
Avatar 10:14am hyde:

i haven't heard this in forever
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15am Doug Schulkind:

My daughter heads back to college in a week. She was supposed to be in Paris for the fall semester, but that has been scuttled. Frankly, she would have been safer over there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15am doctorjazz:

Miles did manage to get his horn the edge of an electric guitar.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16am doctorjazz:

Looks like that's true, @Doug, but they don't want any Americans (for good reason).
  10:17am DJpeterDE:

@hyde same
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am doctorjazz:

Sad for her to miss out on that experience, hopefully another semester it will be safe.to travel to Paris again.
Avatar 10:18am TDK60:

Morning Jeff. Jumpin' over from the reggae show..
Avatar 10:18am Listener Gregory:

This is the dog-god's favorite album.
Avatar 10:18am hyde:

College where I work was planning for 40% on campus student pop this year, but they didn't get as many takers as they thought. Gonna be more like 25%
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18am Jeff Golick:

Hey, @TDK60!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19am fred:

@Doug and doc: Looks like a second wave is starting over here. We look headed back to lockdown by the fall
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19am Jeff Golick:

I think this "Sivad" has elements of "Honky Tonk" in it, which really should be Yknoh Knot.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20am Doug Schulkind:

@Listener Gregory
Speaking of dog-god, Miles composed "Drad Dog" in tribute to Columbia Records honcho Goddard Lieberson.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21am doctorjazz:

That bad, @Fred? Or are they just smart enough to shut down before things get out of hand?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22am Jeff Golick:

Wow, @Doug, that's a new one on me, and one for the next Drawkcab Sgnog file!
  10:23am DJpeterDE:

@jeff blame oet orecam
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26am Jeff Golick:

Whose electric piano do we think this is?
Avatar 10:26am Listener Gregory:

@Doug, you could have a set (not a whole show, I don't think) of anagram tributes. Bill Evans had a couple, most notably Re: Person I Knew. That is, relax the "backwards" requirement.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26am fred:

@doc: cases going up, testing issues, schools scheduled to reopen without any plan in place... sounds familiar?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27am Doug Schulkind:

Miles' "Nosrebeil" was a work of lesser charms.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28am Jeff Golick:

I relaxed the requirement for this number, @LG.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28am doctorjazz:

@Fred, sadly, it does.
Avatar 10:28am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Fender's piano? ...yeah sorry...
Avatar 10:29am Listener Gregory:

Having looked at the personnel, I'm going to guess Keith Jarrett on the e-p.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32am Jeff Golick:

Yeah, I was leaning Jarrett, too. I think my favorite Jarret is Miles-era Jarret.
  10:33am DJpeterDE:

@doug LOL
Avatar 10:36am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...hope the AEC won't mind a little gittar feedback on top...a little caffeine & I need something to do it seems...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37am doctorjazz:

Be taking the show I the car soon, have to get the last items out of my older daughter's former Manhattan apartment (she's sheltering in Joisey until the coast is clear).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39am Jeff Golick:

Safe travels, @doc, and play on, @RRN63!
Avatar 10:46am Stork:

Howdy Pards of the Outer Thing. Loving this AEC!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47am Jeff Golick:

@Stork!

That "Sivad" will have to do double duty as a birthday tribute to Jack DeJohnette, who I just learned is turning 78 today.
Avatar 10:49am Listener Gregory:

"Whoo-hoooooo! Jack DeJohnette, man!"
(Quote from Pat Metheny's 80/81 album.)
  10:54am Dave Sewelson:

Doog wohs ffej
Avatar 10:54am Listener Gregory:

Would have bet money that this is Ornette's quartet.

Avatar 10:58am Stork:

Still, Jack De sure deserves his own parade!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59am Jeff Golick:

Yeah, I've only recently become aware of some of his ECM 70s albums, and really really like 'em.
Avatar 10:59am Stork:

OOOO, nice tweak, JG!! ;)
  11:00am DJpeterDE:

@LG it is Don Cherry I believe so mistaking for Ornette is understandable
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01am Jeff Golick:

The word nerd/jazz nerd venn diagram might as well be a perfect circle.
  11:02am DJpeterDE:

The GF agreed
Avatar 11:04am Listener Gregory:

@DJpDE, the whole sound and composition sounds modeled after Coleman to me. This is pretty early Shepp, so maybe he was searching for a sound.
  11:04am DJpeterDE:

I am now wondering if those HatArt collections — Kimus #1 etc — are a weird anagram of music. Is it spelled Musik in Switzerland or wherever the Hat people live?
  11:07am DJpeterDE:

Jeff comes through with Kalaparusha
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08am Jeff Golick:

The Creator works in mysterious ways.
  11:10am DJpeterDE:

@LG true. ornette’s impact loomed large
Avatar 11:11am Listener Gregory:

If you say Kalaparusha backwards, a demon appears, so please don't try.
Maybe I shouldn't have even mentioned it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18am chresti:

Haha LG.
