Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:02pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

So Elvis never changed much when he worked with him I guess - would be my question - as he seems to be quite different now from the late 70s guy who called Ray Charles a "stupid blind [n-word]" - reportedly just to tick off annoying Yanks @ some dive...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:10pm mariano:

Yeah I've read that the "Radio Radio" SNL thing was planned and they'd never been forbidden by Lorne Michaels from playing it. Was Michaels got pissed off at was the suggestion that he'd forbidden it. At least that's what I've read.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:10pm mariano:

*What Michaels got pissed off at...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:19pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

*Very* interesting :
Macca - pick
Entwistle - taps
Jameson - thumb
Avatar #1 Hit Supporter Year-End Fundraiser 2020 Swag For Life Member 12:20pm Frank In Queens:

Entwistle used a pick plenty in the early days. It was in the 70s that he pretty much only used fingers, and then when he started using active basses, then tapping began.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:21pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Stills ! Forgot that part...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:21pm myron feld:

And Bonnie Bramlett
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:22pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Thx Frank ...'My Generation' - that's a pick...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:22pm myron feld:

@Frank: what is an active bass?
Avatar 12:23pm Michael Shelley:

has a battery
Avatar #1 Hit Supporter Year-End Fundraiser 2020 Swag For Life Member 12:23pm Frank In Queens:

@myron, active electronics as opposed to passive electronics.

...I mean I'm guessing...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:23pm myron feld:

thank you
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:25pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Active Bass more than just the pickups? - like bridge sensors maybe? Or no - just a preamp?

The sound on Armed Forces still haunts 40 plus years later.

Doesn't even have a trout farm!
Avatar #1 Hit Supporter Year-End Fundraiser 2020 Swag For Life Member 12:27pm Frank In Queens:

I'm not a total gearhead, but I'm pretty sure that an active bass has a built-in battery powered pre-amp which gives the instrument a much "bigger" sound. It makes it easier to get a full sound when only "tapping" the strings instead of plucking them. I'm personally not a fan of the sound of active basses.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:30pm Listener Baby:

Active pickups require a 9 volt battery to generate a magnetic field. Passive magnets, like a stray pickup, are always “on”
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:30pm Greg from ZONE 5:

I like the cut of Bruce's jib.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:31pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Thanks - appreciated. Alembic all into that...

I'd rather share a cab with Bruce than Declan I suspect
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:33pm mariano:

To me it depends on the song. Sometimes pick, sometimes fingers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:33pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

That reaction to change - exactly what Declan said about RubberSoul.
  12:33pm Frank Zaatar:

Beyond Belief: The best opening bass line in history.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:33pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Incredible sound!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:33pm Greg from ZONE 5:

Beyond Belief: hands down favorite EC song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:34pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Ah. Revolver's engineer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:35pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

He means Berlin, right?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:37pm Greg from ZONE 5:

YES! I always felt like "Man Out of Time" was bookended by an early Pavement song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:37pm Baja Joe:

Really enjoying this interview. Very informative.
Avatar 12:38pm Michael Shelley:

GZ5 - lol
  12:42pm BEAVO:

King of America one of his best.
  12:43pm Greg from ZONE 5:

Morning, Shelleys & Ruth & all! It's a good day to go outside and listen to the show on my smartphone.
Avatar #1 Hit Supporter Year-End Fundraiser 2020 Swag For Life Member 12:43pm Handy Haversack:

I love Blood and Chocolate, yeah.
  12:45pm BEAVO:

How to be Dumb was about Bruce Thomas
  12:46pm BEAVO:

Fictionalized HA
  12:47pm BEAVO:

Must be a drag having to do interviews and only talk about your former boss that fired you
Avatar #1 Hit Supporter Year-End Fundraiser 2020 12:47pm Ross T.:

Interesting that so many bad feelings in bands years later are over money but not the case at all here.
  12:48pm Steve Harsh:

Fantastic interview Michael, great stuff!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:48pm Tommy in Neversink:

BEAVO.....but wouldn't it be odd not to talk about EC .
  12:49pm clarke:

consider it a chance to get YOUR viewpoint said
  12:50pm BEAVO:

Yes In his book the big wheel he never mentions Elvis by name only referring to him as the singer
  12:50pm clarke:

but the hate is still palpable, here.
  12:51pm Stevel:

Thanks so much for a great interview!
Avatar #1 Hit Supporter Year-End Fundraiser 2020 Swag For Life Member 12:52pm Handy Haversack:

Ouch. "When you can fake sincerity, you've got it made."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:53pm mariano:

He didn't refer to him as The Beloved Entertainer?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:53pm Ciggy:

Love the honesty.

Still on Team EC but this is fascinating. Thanks Michael, thanks Ruth!

Really enjoyed the interview! Thanks Michael and Ruth in the booth! Take care all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57pm Jeezy:

@Michael, I must disagree! I agree that the music of the Police is not as varied, but the actual drumming... no way! Show me elements of african grooves, afro-caribbean, and all that crazy cymbal/hi-hat play... Stewart was way more original.
  12:58pm yerfriendpaul:

What a great interview!!!
  12:58pm BEAVO:

Michael talks so fast he always clips off the end of his sentences
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:58pm patrick321:

Still here, Bruce.
  12:58pm Colin in Durham, England:

This came at a great time, just as I’ve spent weeks binge listening to Elvis C again. Excellent show thanks x
  12:58pm scott:

We need a part 2 of that interview. Outstanding!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:59pm Greg from ZONE 5:

GTFO.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:00pm Listener Baby:

One of the best interviews you've ever done, Baby. Mad skills, you got. I am with Bruce on B&C. Moments only. I've tried for years to into that record. I just can't do it. But again congrats to you, and thanks to BT!
  1:00pm bianca bob:

Amazing conversation! Thank you both! Just delicious!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:00pm Jeezy:

My understanding had been that once Bruce revealed the Attractions called Elvis's body, "The Pod" Elvis vowed they would never work together again.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:01pm Jeezy:

I also agree with Bruce on B&C. Excellent album but not up to the classic era, or even King Of America.
Avatar 1:02pm CTEmpress:

THIS!!!Thank you Michael, Bruce and yes DANGEROUS as
hell xoxoxo
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:02pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Mr. Thomas quite generous here
- Mr. Shelley impressively knowledgeable & skillful interviewer. Wow.
