I'd prefer not to sacrifice myself on a tree, or lose an eye, for that matter.

@Really.Lisa I'm hanging in there, doing some yoga/pilates almost daily, trying not to eat too much ice cream, and wondering when transatlantic flights will be a thing again

Yes, Brian, I just finished recording the dance show last night! So much fun, but hard to choose the songs!

@Mary that's good since my clicky-star finger is set to 15
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:27pm Andrew_in_WI:

@Mary I listened to the Boy in the Bubble show the other day. Paul Simon actually recorded an extended version of the song released as 12" single. Check it out

I'd just like to go on record and say my bride's broccoli salad is not "lunch"
Avatar 12:29pm Mary Wing:

Hi Carmichael!

Bah, Andrew, The Boy In The Bubble is a fairly long song already! Wonder what he added to it, will check it out later, thanks!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:34pm Phillippe Bastille:

Something from The Dears would fit nicely here as well
Avatar 12:34pm Sylvia (France-NYC):

(Dominique A is a great French indie artist, for those of you Francophiles)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:35pm Stanley:

Sem - I might not go back to the smooth look again.
Avatar 12:35pm Mary Wing:

Good evening, Stanley! Been hanging elsewhere lately?
Avatar 12:36pm Sem:

T'was fun hearing all the Scotch talk on the Subway yesterday.
Avatar 12:38pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Honestly? I'm like on the Howard Hughes hygiene bus here... my chief preoccupation being drinking an entire Franco Press of cafe daily - whatever effort is required...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:38pm Stanley:

Yes Mary. Work has kept me away from commenting much recently. I've taken this week off, staying in and 'doing my thing'.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:38pm maestroso:

This Kishi Bashi piece is gorgeous. Oh, and Hi Mary!
Avatar 12:42pm Mary Wing:

Hello maestroso! Happy August!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:43pm Stanley:

@Sem - There are a few whisky lovers on that show. Very easy to get the chat going on the 'water of life'.
Avatar 12:44pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Really if you're not named Ulysses Crockett why bother.
Avatar 12:45pm Sem:

Kid should have been named Pocket.
Avatar 12:48pm Mary Wing:

I had a Pocket Crocket back in the day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:48pm Handy Haversack:

Stanley, my local shop was having a sale on Bowmore. The rest is as you might imagine!
Avatar 12:50pm Sem:

Hiker/camper, Mary? Never would have guessed.
Avatar 12:51pm Mary Wing:

Um, no, not that kind of pocket crocket, Sem, heh.
Avatar 12:53pm βrian:

My salary has not kept up with the price of single malts, sadly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54pm Ike:

Very nice Hollie Cook track!
Avatar 12:55pm βrian:

I never had a Popiel's Pocket Fisherman. *sniff*
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:55pm Carmichael:

The single malt CPI has been running in the negatives lately.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57pm Handy Haversack:

Assuming you don't mean Crisis Prevention Initiative, that's good news, Carm.
Avatar 12:57pm Mary Wing:

Hiya Ike!

I meant to say this at the mic break: Bandcamp is waiving it's fees again on Friday, so artists receive 100% of all purchases--don't forget to support the bands you like by buying their music!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:07pm Phillippe Bastille:

Just wondering, Mary, what type of dancing shoes are suggested for the dance party? And is a jacket required?
  1:07pm David in London:

Late in today. Zoinks. All Hail Mary Wing!
Hello gang, Handy, Phillippe, Sem, Stanley, Sylvia, Carmichael.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:08pm Phillippe Bastille:

Hey DiL! Do you have a jacket I can borrow for Mary's dance party, if required? Something in a nice plaid?
Avatar 1:08pm Mary Wing:

No jacket necessary, but if you have those plastic jelly sandals, Phillippe, I suggest wearing them, heh.

Hiya David!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:09pm Phillippe Bastille:

@Mary I do have The Dude mentality...
Avatar 1:09pm Mary Wing:

Then we shall drink white Russians together, Phillippe!
Avatar 1:11pm Sem:

Greets, David in London.
  1:11pm David in London:

Phillippe, like Phil Collins, it’s no jacket required.

But if you fancy cutting a dash anyway, I can lend you either (a) a plaid 70s sports jacket as owned by my dad or (b) my black Gieves and Hawkes hunting jacket with velvet collar.
  1:12pm David in London:

I should add, I am ideologically opposed to fox hunting. But not to the accoutrements.
Avatar 1:12pm Really Lisa:

@Sylvia 12:24 sounds good! Except, same here as for wondering about flights! I was training for a marathon which would have taken place in June in the Faroe Islands :( Now who knows when US folks will be allowed let alone welcomed in other countries..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:13pm Handy Haversack:

Afternoon, David! F0F0 was looking for you earlier and asked the egg after you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:14pm Stanley:

Handy - I like Bowmore, as it is more subtle than some of the other Islays. I enjoy the peateds so long as they are not too heavy on the barbeque pork chop. I usually end the evening with a peated, as there is no going back after one of those babies.
  1:16pm Dean:

Again with the peated single malt talk! I'm going to have to explore again.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:17pm Stanley:

Dean - I didn't start it this time
  1:18pm Dean:

No, but you're egging him on.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:18pm Stanley:

Guilty as charged
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:19pm Stanley:

Can you get a 10 Ft. Ganja Plant on Bandcamp?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20pm Handy Haversack:

Stanley, the only advertisement I have ever loved was a shot from behind of a fellow in full regalia, standing on the Brooklyn Heights Promenade, gazing at Manhattan, with his arm around a 9' tall bottle of Ardbeg.
  1:22pm David in London:

Handy, sadly I couldn’t make Ken’s Show today. But I’m glad the friendship of FoFo and Talking Egg continues whilst I am away.
How’s yourself?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:22pm Carmichael:

OK, a bit of a respite. I've had 2 successive Jameson evenings, about to be 3 tonight.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:23pm Phillippe Bastille:

@Mary most definitely! Back in my drinking days, we went on an all-inclusive vacation. My boys and I decided we would drink our way through famous movie drinks. We started with a martini (shaken, not stirred), then moved on to the White Russian. We never did make it to a third movie -- drank 'em for about an hour and a half.
@DiL they both sound charming. And given the twisted ankle I got stepping in a foxhole in my yard, I've now stepped onto the pro side of the fox hunting
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:25pm Stanley:

Smooth, Carm
  1:28pm David in London:

Carmichael, well, three is the magic number after all.
Phillippe, do you want to borrow my fox mask as well?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:28pm Handy Haversack:

Not too bad, David. Playing catch-up to an extent, but you know. Back with the sparrows again. How about you? Did your travels begin?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:32pm Phillippe Bastille:

@DiL the one from your CD cover? YES!!

Avatar 1:58pm Hubig Pie:

Well, my birds liked this song
Avatar 1:58pm Mary Wing:

Speaking of clicks, I just noticed on the Birdstriking song was played by Matt Warwick exactly five years ago on this day--what are the odds of that ever happening again?
  2:01pm Dean:

1/365.25?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:02pm spodiodi:

<3
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:04pm Handy Haversack:

That's the odds of it being played on the same day in any given year, I think. For precisely five years ago, I don't know exactly how you adjust. I guess it could be as simple as multiplying by 1/[(years of existing playlists) - 5], but that seems like it would be too easy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:05pm Phillippe Bastille:

@Handy I would think "pretty slim" would be the technical term.
Avatar 2:05pm Mary Wing:

"Highly unlikely" is my preferred term.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:05pm Carmichael:

"next to nothing"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:05pm Handy Haversack:

Got me with the technical mumbo-jumbo, Phillippe!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:06pm Phillippe Bastille:

I'm kind of a stickler when it comes to math terminology
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:07pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Whatever the answer is, the math is more complicated than that required to enter a comment when not signed in. Also, less likely to be 666.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:07pm Carmichael:

Morrisey enough for me ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:08pm Handy Haversack:

How *much* less likely to be 666, though?
Avatar 2:08pm Mary Wing:

When you said Morrissey earlier, Carm, I thought "how did he know The Smiths were today's 3oak? HOW?"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:09pm Ike:

Speaking of the Smiths, I've been listening to an audiobook called "Sigh, Gone" by Phuc Tran, about an immigrant growing up in the 80s in Pennsyltucky and getting into punk rock, skateboarding, literature, and then the Smiths, even though at first the punk boys think the Smiths are just for goth girls. It's a great memoir so far.
Avatar 2:09pm david w:

I'm actually here, and live today! Hello, Mary and all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:09pm Phillippe Bastille:

There's a semi-legendary DC-area DJ (Weasel) who has only referred to Morrisey as "Miserable Morrisey" for like 35 years
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:10pm Handy Haversack:

Kate's band has been working on a Smiths cover. I posited that at this point all Smiths covers should be instrumentals. My opinion has been noted but I think I have also been politely thanked for my input and told to return to my seat.
  2:11pm David in London:

I remember seeing Henry Rollins in Manchester in the 1980s and he did a hilarious Morrissey impression.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:12pm Carmichael:

HA Mary, I heard the whiny romantic vibe going through that first set. An unconscious giveaway .. :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:12pm Phillippe Bastille:

hey there david w
Avatar 2:12pm Mary Wing:

Hiya David W.!
  2:12pm Dean:

That's what went through my mind, too, Handy. But I'm not sure the five year factor changes the analysis. For example, we're not asking the odds of the same song, same day, five years in a row. Rather, we're asking the odds of, say, a coin landing heads or tails on the fifth flip, which is still 1/2. Which tells me I've left out a very important factor, namely, the odds of the song being played at all on any given day. That should be roughly [average no. of songs played per day on WFMU]/[average daily supply of songs in WFMU library]. Call this s/L. The answer to Mary's query, then, is:

s/L*365.25

Now, what are the odds that I'm full of shit?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:15pm Handy Haversack:

Not L/s?
Avatar 2:15pm northguineahills:

An original song I actually knoq!
Avatar 2:16pm northguineahills:

@Phillippe: It's "maths"

j/k
  2:17pm Dean:

I watched a bio doc about Arthur "Killer" Kane on the weekend. I don't watch movies much, but a buddy recommended it. Was really good. And I was surprised to find admiration for Morrissey in my heart. He'd pushed for a New York Dolls reunion in 2004.

I had to think about *that*, too, Handy. Suppose WFMU plays 10 songs on average a day and that the library consists of 100 tracks. Then the odds of a track being played on any day are 10/100 or 1/10.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:17pm Phillippe Bastille:

Is there an x factor in the whole discussion of the number of times the song gets played overall, thus increasing the likelihood that it will be played on the same exact day 5 years apart? Or is it like the fact that the odds of flipping 5 tails in a row is 64/1 before the first flip but only 2/1 after the first 4 successful flips?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:17pm Phillippe Bastille:

@NGH DiL would totally agree with you
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:19pm Handy Haversack:

And do we have to factor in Scott W's new "WFMU Hit List" feature to have any hope with the maths at all?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:20pm gilmour:

hello! sorry I'm late
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:20pm Phillippe Bastille:

I think we need to factor in anything Scott does in respect to his devotion to the station during covid. Then we can forget about it when stuff gets back to normal
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:20pm Phillippe Bastille:

The odds of flipping a tail, using a good coin, are always 1/2. But you're right, Phillippe, if you're implying that playlists are not "good" in the way a coin should be. I think you mean 1/32, btw. 2^5, right?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:21pm Phillippe Bastille:

*maybe that edit wasn't right either...

Hello gilmour! Latecomers will be seated at management's discretion, but I think we can squeeze you in...
  2:22pm David in London:

Phillippe, yes, it’s the ‘s’ that’s rightly migrated from ‘sport’.
Hee hee.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:22pm Phillippe Bastille:

@Dean you are right. Not enough fingers to figure that out
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:22pm Carmichael:

There will never be a "back to normal", in my opinion.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:25pm Michael 98145:

Avatar 2:25pm Mary Wing:

There is an audio clip from a movie in this Ritas version, can anyone identify it? Listen closely, please; I'm guessing it is an old British movie.
Avatar 2:29pm Mary Wing:

Hi there Michael 98!

Hi, there. No idea what that is from, however.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:31pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Blah, the only 100% Whatever contests I'm any good at are the backwards songs.
Avatar 2:32pm Mary Wing:

Thanks for typing that out, Michael, I couldn't anything in a google search on that though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:32pm Michael 98145:

Avatar 2:33pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

@KFHP I wonder if you were there that day years ago when I made Bryce's comment math always add up to 666 (this was before you could sign in and bypass it; so, everyone had to notice)

Avatar 2:47pm Mary Wing:

Moving you into the DJ Black Helmet groove, sort of.
Avatar 2:48pm northguineahills:

I'm surprised we didn't hear Jean from Mexrrisey! (yes, Mexican flavored (sometimes cumbia-eque), Morrissey and Smith covered band en ingles y espanol...
Avatar 2:48pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...face fur removed - nails pared...measurably less Howard Hughes-eeesh !
...Now aren't you proud to be the soundtrack to such upwardly mobile activities...
Avatar 2:49pm Mary Wing:

Argh! I couldn't find Mexrrisey's version, NGH!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:51pm Handy Haversack:

You clean up real nice, RevRab!
Avatar 2:51pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...perhaps what Moz's contempo sociopolitical barometer requires is an adjustment from a Mexrrocist...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:53pm Michael 98145:

Thank you again. You know how to keep us entertained and out of trouble.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:54pm Handy Haversack:

Thanks, Mary! I'm always going to prefer Mexrissey to Morrissey, but I 100 percent prefer your show even more.
