Are you exasperated by the length and idiocy of the Bodega Pop opening theme? Do you feel safe and comfortable hearing it before each show? Please take our 5-second survey and let us know! www.surveymonkey.com...

Dean:

I'm agnostic, but it seems to me that one measurable factor independent of listener opinion should carry some weight, namely, how often has the show ended either a little bit overtime or without your being able to play one final track for fear of going overtime? If occasionally, then sure, shorten the theme. If not, what's the harm?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:07pm
Gary:

Dean! I'm usually short on tracks and have to add one or two in at the last minute

There's Fine Wine with Downtown Soulville - talks moderate to little amount - wham bam 23 or 24 amazing 45s in an hour. I think that comes from Dance DJ culture.
Gaylord Fields who weaves a cinematic tapestry with the occasional bit of edifying or reflective commentary on a track... It's easy to take for granted how distinct DJ styles are one from another. The Drummer Stream generally feels like back rooms with cushier more lived in furniture...

...so...the Bodega theme establishes the idea of how you acquire musics & your relation to it - & both the diverse street culture quality of it with the 'streets are crazy' part - & then friendliness & humor with the Nellie as contrasting information. This seems canny & effective programming to me...& then we go wherever for hours anyhow.

Gary:

Sweet, ARB! Looking forward to that! And, TDK, I just saw that you stepped in -- howdy!
Avatar 8:17pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Also my understanding is one application of the term 'World Music' referred to a specific genre style that was a fusion of international musics with Western pop - of some kind... That intent may actually make more sense for the term (...whatever the result).
'International' is weird if it happens to be *your* native music - but it makes a little more sense...

My complaint is precisely with the sloppy but insidious application of a term like "world music" to some vague genre. Influence is such a difficult determination. AI imagines it can resolve it. I'm a doubter, in part because I want the analysis of influence to allow me, a third-party intervenor, to imply (suggest, insist) that an early work is part of a later one in some meaningful sense, even if the "data" (jfc, yawn) suggest otherwise.

The Beatles & Python otoh were of course British & grew up with the BBC & The Goons explicitly. In fact it was a selling point to The Beatles that their Producer George Martin had done The Goons' records ! & then their film Director Richard Lester had worked with them as well.

Proctor did say in those interviews that he heard the Goons early, but I don't recall the context, whether it was via records. I'd have to go back and listen again.

I am still here TDK, but getting ready to go. Our friends Rick and Critter want to get together, so I'm going to check out this park near by that has all these goofy cement dinosaurs and sea creatures and see how crowded it gets in the evening.

Ooh - Nasida Ria! Cool! They have some nice videos too. I played some when I was teaching a class on Music and Islam, back in my academic days/daze.

I think I found that CD in Amsterdam, Tim -- so wonderful

The 3rd track back sounded Arab influenced, maybe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35pm
Gary:

Definitely, TDK -- Yemeni

The two guitar track reminded me of Hamza El Din's oud on the Nile...

tim abdellah:

That Nasid style (3rd track) draws consciously from Arab music. "Nashid" in Arabic is a devotional song. The indonesian nasyid style signifies Islamic piety, even if the lyrics are not devotional.

tim abdellah:

The gambus style is also very Arab influenced and uses the 'ud - as Gary mentions, an old influence from Yemeni traders/settlers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44pm
Gary:

Yes, thank you, Tim, I was conflating qasidah and gambus

You wouldn't think this would be the best music to accompany a sabich sandwich, but somehow, it is.
Avatar 9:49pm
tim abdellah:

@Ike - LOL
@Gary - have you heard the Malaysian Islamic boy bands like Raihan?
Avatar 9:50pm
tim abdellah:

That's probably 15 years ago that that stuff was happening, so I guess they ain't boys any more :D
Avatar 9:51pm
tim abdellah:

Oh dang - their 1st album was from 1996 - they're older than I remember!
