@DJPeter & Linda Lee, I once went to a small gig where the drummer had no cymbals. It turned out that he expected to find a drumset already there, but it didn't include cymbals, because they're too easily stolen, so he had to play without them. Still don't know what an envelope follower is, picture myself waiting for an important letter at the mail box. Still practicing my slow shuffle-dance for the upcoming Dead Dance Party.

Jerry using an envelope follower most famously on Estimated Prophet.

Edie Brickell and the New Bohemians' one hit featured one as well.

It doesn't sound like the typical CTI.

The Joe Farrell's are the most "out" (a la Corea-Holland-DeJohnette). Most CTI's are very slick and produced
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am
StringOFperils:

There is no Envelope Follower on CTI.
Avatar 🦀 Swag For Life Member 11:25am

Discogs lists 2,301 CTI records, so I probably should avoid generalizing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26am

Actually interesting to know that, dr. jazz. I had wondered how many CTI releases were created.

Dean:

I think it's fair to generalize, doctorjazz. CTI was known for a distinctive house sound, particularly during the later years, but there were enough exceptions to keep listeners on our toes. Primarily, though, CTI was famous for is cover designs. I noted last week on Stork's comment board, during the Joanne Brackeen sets, that the Tappan Zee label, a Columbia imprint, shared the same designer. Seeing a Brackeen LP cover on Tappan Zee, you'd think you were seeing a CTI. Turns out Bob James started TZ. I wonder whether that's the only connection.
Avatar 🦀 Swag For Life Member 11:30am
DJpeterDE:

@Doc there's generalizing, and then there's "house sound" or "brand identity"

No, DJpeterDE and I did *not* coordinate our comments.

That seems right, too, all/mostly gatefold LPs. Looks like the catalog is so extensive due to various media issues and re-issues, as Jeff G. suggests, but also to 7" issues when the label was an imprint of A&M.
