Avatar 9:07am Listener Gregory:

Good morning all. I'm on vacation, so I don't have to listen today.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:07am doctorjazz:

Rev, don't know why, the opening tracks do stay starred in my phone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09am Jeff Golick:

@alanr! I'm confused by the idea of morning exercises, so it would that etc etc.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12am Jeff Golick:

Hey, @northguineahills! Where you at? Where you going?
Avatar 9:13am DJpeterDE:

@Doug is there an automated playlist that records the GTD stream?
Avatar 9:14am northguineahills:

Just moved back to Orlando, need to find an extended stay hotel until I get paid for my job, that starts, Monday, then, after getting paid, I can get my own flat....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15am Jeff Golick:

Oh, yeah, @DJpeterDE, there is indeed a master playlist...I'll try to find the link. (It's at the bottom of the daily email, if you get the GTDR missive.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22am Jeff Golick:

www.onlineradiobox.com... <---- try this @DJpeterDE.

Thanks, @doc!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24am Jeff Golick:

@ngh: Orlando! Congrats on the gig; please stay safe!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24am doctorjazz:

The miss on this is odd...the orchestra sounds so distant, the piano was so front and center.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30am Jeff Golick:

Are you counting this, @doc?
Avatar 9:30am DJpeterDE:

Thanks @doc & @doug for the link. Will have to check out Dana Gillespie!
Avatar 9:31am DJpeterDE:

Has anyone seen Tapscott live? Hungry for anecdotes!

@hyde: well, there are square watermelons, so anything's possible. www.whataboutwatermelon.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32am Jeff Golick:

Avatar 9:37am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

As a 'Monster Kid' have 'checked out' Dana in B-Movies. She fills the screen so to speak...pals with Bowie apparently the jammy bastard.
  9:40am DJpeterDE:

Is devin gray the Diego rataplan guy?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41am Jeff Golick:

Yes he is!
Avatar 9:42am Listener Gregory:

I don't think bell peppers are the most objectionable vegetables. At least they're very easy to cut.
Avatar 9:42am Listener Gregory:

Every time I hear Horace Tapscott, I am surprised that it is so good and wonder how I missed him at the time.
  9:43am DJpeterDE:

What you really want is not a Square pepper, but a flat sheet
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44am doctorjazz:

Loving this set (often don't wake early enough for the opening set).
Avatar 9:46am Listener Gregory:

I have the Previte/Saft/Cline record and felt that individual cuts were fine, but the entire CD was a much of a muchness.
Avatar 9:47am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Interesting sonics. Reminds me of Japanese monster movies...always a plus in my book!...
Avatar 9:47am Listener Gregory:

Excuse my music theory terminology!
  9:47am DJpeterDE:

They belong on 78s, @LG
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48am Jeff Golick:

Glad you're here for it, @doc!
@LG: I get where you're coming from.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48am doctorjazz:

LG, I think he was missed by most folks at the time. In fact, when I first heard about of him, maybe in the 90s, I think there were only 2 CDs available that I found (The Dark Tree v1 and 2)
  9:48am DJpeterDE:

Like, the teddy Wilson mosaic box is amazing in small doses but too much ness
Avatar 9:49am hyde:

this show is so hot my computer just crashed
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51am Jeff Golick:

Oh dear, @hyde.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51am doctorjazz:

Interesting, LG, Saft, Cline, Previte are among my favorite players (but Cline can get really deep into his computer/electronic sounds.. Saft as well, for that matter).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53am doctorjazz:

Now, the Threadgill Sextett is yup there in the pantheon, as far as I'm concerned!
Avatar 9:53am hyde:

yeah, this is a fantastic record
  9:54am DJpeterDE:

I’m guessing this title was inspired by a painting
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56am Jeff Golick:

I do think of this painting -- en.wikipedia.org... -- though it does not depict a suicide.
  9:56am DJpeterDE:

Yup. Or Socrates, which is not at the Baths or maybe it is?
Avatar 10:01am Stork:

Hey all. Just poppoing in to hear the Threadgill. Sweet Sunday!!
  10:03am DJpeterDE:

Yes, my understanding Is that the last T is for the seventh musician. He called it a sextet because there were six instruments (vs seven musicians).
Avatar 10:04am Linda Lee:

good morning, darn it! :-)
  10:04am DJpeterDE:

I was struck that Johnathan Blake introduced himself (jazz gallery stream Thursday) as playing “drums and cymbals.” Two sets of instruments?
Avatar 10:04am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

T for Two
...myself I need to man the French press I believe...
Avatar 10:05am Linda Lee:

sure, i can see drums & cymbals as different instruments, often put together in a kit, but not always.
  10:06am Uncle Michael:

it's unseasonably gorgeous here in Kansas. I'm out in the yard picking up debris.
Avatar 10:06am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Trap set does mean contraption...
There's a good cartoon in there with dueling remotes...
  10:07am DJpeterDE:

@Linda often drummers on tour bring their own cymbals but rent the drums
Avatar 10:07am Linda Lee:

really! didn't know that!
  10:07am DJpeterDE:

@RevRab I didn’t know that and it’s awesome!
Avatar 10:08am Linda Lee:

always something to learn at D:O :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08am doctorjazz:

A review of the Threadgill Sextett in the Times at the time...

They agree with the 2 drummer counting as 1 (I have a vague memory of him saying somewhere that it was also marketing-it got noticed and talked about. Much the way Sex Mob was a name that you noticed)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09am doctorjazz:

Big Garchik fan, this doesn't disappoint!
Avatar 10:10am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Think of an orchestra:
Timpani, snare, cymbal...a set sits them in front of one person. Most Traditions throughout the world it's one person one drum...
Avatar 10:11am Listener Gregory:

Jeff, just remember that, as Paul Simon said, one man's remote control is another man's ceiling. (or person's)
Avatar 10:13am Listener Gregory:

@DJPeter & Linda Lee, I once went to a small gig where the drummer had no cymbals. It turned out that he expected to find a drumset already there, but it didn't include cymbals, because they're too easily stolen, so he had to play without them. Sadly, I didn't even notice until the band mentioned it.
Avatar 10:13am Stork:

Oh yeah!! Amy Denio and band! Love th Billy Tipton project!!
Avatar 10:13am Listener Gregory:

Gotta run, people. Keep up the good work, Jeff.
Avatar 10:15am Linda Lee:

so, online discourse: i've just been asked to prove an assertion i've never even mentioned. somehow, because of things i've actually said, it's assumed i hold a whole universe of beliefs that have nothing to do with me. isn't this weird?
Avatar 10:15am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Drummers have it rough with all that stuff!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15am Jeff Golick:

Bybe, @LG! Thanks and take care!

And hellos to all coming through -- @Stork! & @Linda Lee!
Avatar 10:15am Linda Lee:

don't mean to get into debate here. i just find this a funny phenomenon. i think that's called prejudice. pre-judgement.
Avatar 10:16am Linda Lee:

hi Jeff!! love the sounds! thank you!
  10:18am DJpeterDE:

@linda fascinating. I’d be curious to know if a good reader would be able to anticipate my positions on future issues
  10:18am DJpeterDE:

This person obviously not a good reader
Avatar 10:18am Linda Lee:

ho! yeah! :-)
Avatar 10:18am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

On fb Linda? Sounds like a Straw Man case? Bring your own enemy with you to attack...
Avatar 10:19am Linda Lee:

thanks, Rev! yes!
Avatar 10:19am hyde:

that sure sounds like online discourse
  10:19am DJpeterDE:

@stork listened to J Bracken show afterward, A-1!
Avatar 10:19am Linda Lee:

hahah!! ain't it though.
Avatar 10:20am Linda Lee:

have i mentioned how much i love the fmu comments board? :-)
  10:20am DJpeterDE:

I guess this set is making up for the extra Threadgill drummer
Avatar 10:22am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I slipped a discourse & haven't even been able to stand up straight for a week online...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22am doctorjazz:

The Saxhouse link didn't work on my phone...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23am doctorjazz:

"We don't need no STINKIN' rhythm section!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24am Jeff Golick:

Ooops - thanks, @doc. HTML typo, now fixed.
Avatar 10:24am Stork:

We're having good sax, Jeff! Dr. Ruth would be groovin'.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24am Jeff Golick:

The Tipton group often has drums underneath; it was a little harder finding something without.
Avatar 10:24am Linda Lee:

sounds like a good idea to sit it out for a while, Rev.
btw, my rabbits aren't out on the lawn today. rain!
Avatar 10:26am Linda Lee:

there's a tiny one this year you could hold in your palm i worry about the hawks that live in our trees. so far so good, though!
Avatar 10:27am Linda Lee:

oh no! no period!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28am doctorjazz:

ROVA, also a fav (they don't improvise, all composed through-i asked Larry Ochs at a house concert he gave with Nels Cline and Gerald Cleaver, who did nothing BUT improvise.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31am chresti:

Morning Jeff and D outers!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31am Jeff Golick:

Hey, @chresti!
Avatar 10:33am Linda Lee:

hi chresti!
Avatar 10:33am Linda Lee:

man! if there's a sound to the way i wake up these days, this is it.
Avatar 10:34am Linda Lee:

it's brilliant.
Avatar 10:36am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Find I'm often thinking of Mingus. He occupies such an interesting place in it all...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38am Jeff Golick:

Here's the twitter thread I mentioned earlier, re Garchik's new album and his compositional "rules": twitter.com...
Avatar 10:38am Linda Lee:

the westerlies' track works *so* well with this underlying steady rain falling through the pines.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39am doctorjazz:

Got up out of bed, put on main system (still headphones), lay down on the couch. Man, this is gorgeous-great set (again). (Rough life here in the burbs...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40am Artie:

There’s just something so English about these horns.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40am Jeff Golick:

Hey, @Artie!
Avatar 10:41am Linda Lee:

it's tough here in the country too, doctor j!
Avatar 10:42am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Oh hey he mentions Mingus...
Baroque horn timbers are very Sunday after all right? Or what once might have been Sunday...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43am doctorjazz:

Man, Garchick, Westerlies, Billy Tipton, gotta stop following those links.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44am Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

Avatar 10:49am northguineahills:

Sorry, was getting pre-business schiitdt done at the hotel office. Gotta pack and run! will listen in the car. Godsonicspeed, Jeff!
  10:49am DJpeterDE:

@doc I believe Rova combined improv and composition. They are not fully notated, although perhaps a given piece might be. And they seem to eschew free improv
Avatar 10:51am Linda Lee:

is it Godlen Gate really?
Avatar 10:52am northguineahills:

wait is, DJ peter in Deutschland, or Deleware?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52am Jeff Golick:

Safe travels, @ngh!

Avatar 10:53am Stork:

Avatar 10:54am hyde:

@ngh haha, i thought it was Deutschland for a loooong time
Avatar 10:56am Stork:

@DJpeter re: Joanne Brackeen: If was a preacher-man-type, I would be out declaiming the name of Joanne Brackeen. That was a really satisfying experience - 4.5 hours of her oevre. Glad u checked it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56am Doug Schulkind:

I like that.
Avatar 10:56am Stork:

Jeff, that set was magically delicious!
Avatar 10:57am StringOFperils:

Amazing show. Stating the obvious, I know......not to mention thinking out loud. Sheesh!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57am doctorjazz:

@DJpetetDE-that's what I would have thought, but when I asked Larry Ochs, he told me every note ROVA played was composed (which is why he so enjoyed playing with Cline and Cleaver). Of course, artists aren't always 100% honest when it comes to "making the sausage".
Avatar 10:57am hyde:

a two week break? i don't remember approving that
Avatar 10:57am Linda Lee:

but was it Godlen Gate..?? i must know.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58am doctorjazz:

That Garchik Twitter post was interesting.
Avatar 10:58am Linda Lee:

i'm startin to think the more apt term is 'antisocial media'.
Avatar 10:59am Linda Lee:

duelling echo chambers! what a headache!
Avatar 11:00am northguineahills:

uhmmm, i was just on a whole hilarious 'anti-social' media last night, LL made me LoLed!
Avatar 11:00am Linda Lee:

you LoLed!! good for you, ngh!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01am doctorjazz:

I had to get that Garchik album when it came out k The Athiest Gospel Trombone Album), bought it for the title, stayed for the music.

i'm not sure there's anything quite like having shelter in a storm.
Linda Obvious Lee might work too.
Avatar 11:03am DJpeterDE:

@Doc re ROVA: okay then.
@Stork agree that J. Brackeen is underrated. I'm not sure when she and Charles Brackeen split? But fascinating that Brackeen almost never recorded with a piano.
Avatar 11:03am northguineahills:

Avatar 11:06am Linda Lee:

they do the transition so much more easily than we do, if we let them. they often need help, but not always.
Avatar 11:06am DJpeterDE:

@Jeff here's what I've found about Dana Gillespie -- many many "blues" albums. "Lovin' Machine" was on "Below the Belt" but also a compilation "Hot Stuff." But I'm more curious about "Belt" because I want to know if that crazy guitar is throughout. Discogs says guitarist is Sam Mitchell and his own albums suggest he saw himself as a bottleneck blues player, not an avant-gardist, but to me he sounded like he was straining to stay IN
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06am Jeff Golick:

Yeah, so sorry to hear ; that's never easy, @StringOFperils.
Avatar 11:07am DJpeterDE:

@String, I've been there too. Terrible terrible time. Well, joyful and beautiful too, until the very end.
Avatar 11:08am hyde:

@String I've done that too and it's no fun. Good luck
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12am doctorjazz:

Sorry to hear that String! Have done that with dogs, very sad
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14am Uncle Michael:

Any time I hear a guitar through an envelope follower, I momentarily wonder if I'm hearing Jerry Garcia...and he only used one on a couple of songs.
Avatar 11:14am northguineahills:

@SoP: I rescued a cat that I found during a college job. I lived until 23 and I nursed it's last few years. My parents took care of it the 16 years I was in NYC, as I didn't know if having a pet would be an impediment to signing a lease. I got to spend the last 2 years w/ her.
Avatar 11:15am StringOFperils:

The Joe Farrell's are the most "out" (a la Corea-Holland-DeJohnette). Most CTI's are very slick and produced
Avatar 11:24am StringOFperils:

There is no Envelope Follower on CTI.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25am doctorjazz:

Discogs lists 2,301 CTI records, so I probably should avoid generalizing.
Avatar 11:26am StringOFperils:

Actually interesting to know that, dr. jazz. I had wondered how many CTI releases were created.
Avatar 11:27am hyde:

if there are 2301, i bet there's a bad one in there somewhere
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28am Uncle Michael:

Yep. Probably.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28am Jeff Golick:

That number seems high to me; I wonder if re-issues are included in that count.
Avatar 11:28am northguineahills:

Most people forget Stanley Clark did amazing music (not his soft jazz, and soft jazz sometimes works).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28am doctorjazz:

Jim Hall's Concierto is one I saw quickly that I really like, quite a few others there that are terrific.

Theme Here reminds of Space Is The Place
Avatar 11:29am northguineahills:

sounds like space is the place....
  11:30am Dean:

I think it's fair to generalize, doctorjazz. CTI was known for a distinctive house sound, particularly during the later years, but there were enough exceptions to keep listeners on our toes. Primarily, though, CTI was famous for is cover designs. I noted last week on Stork's comment board, during the Joanne Brackeen sets, that the Tappan Zee label, a Columbia imprint, shared the same designer. Seeing a Brackeen LP cover on Tappan Zee, you'd think you were seeing a CTI. Turns out Bob James started TZ. I wonder whether that's the only connection.
Avatar 11:30am DJpeterDE:

@Doc there's generalizing, and then there's "house sound" or "brand identity"
  11:30am Dean:

No, DJpeterDE and I did *not* coordinate our comments.

Hi Jeff and D:O aficionados. Good day to you all. Have been listening since the mic break at 10AM ET. Great music. Thank you. Busy chore day. Laters all y'all.

Avatar 11:36am DJpeterDE:

Awesome, Dean! Also, I think CTI (like Impulse!) always did the gatefold thing.
Avatar 11:36am northguineahills:

Very Sharrockish!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38am doctorjazz:

It IS Sharrick-like...not a bad thing.
  11:42am Dean:

That seems right, too, all/mostly gatefold LPs. Looks like the catalog is so extensive due to various media issues and re-issues, as Jeff G. suggests, but also to 7" issues when the label was an imprint of A&M.

@Jeff would still love to hear Kalapursha show but don't want you to feel guilty about it
  11:49am Dean:

The designer of the Moon Germs cover was not the designer who established the label's visual house style of later renown.

Not to worry, @DJpeterDE. I like an assignment.

Lydia is still working, yes! She was still touring in the early COVID days, to such an extent that my friend from whom she is renting her apt. was kind of worried about her.
