Golden Hour of World Music Videos w/ Subtitles a/k/a
Video no Mató a la Estrella del Radio

Today (August 1) is the 39th anniversary of the launch of MTV! Here's Bappi Lahiri's take on the first song ever played on MTV - sung by Usha Uthup for (we believe) Kim Yashpal in the 1982 Bollywood musical Disco Dancer:

With that anniversary in mind, on tonight's show we ask the musical question: Is there any reason for music videos to exist? And the answer is a resounding yes!

You see: We know that one of the challenges of our show is that you may not understand the lyrics of the songs we're playing. But the magic of video solves that problem. Join us for our Golden Hour of World Music Videos With Subtitles - with video links posted for each song (or see the full video playlist at http://tiny.cc/tsp-subtitles) - in Hour 2 of our show tonight!

Listen to this show: MP3 - 128K |  Pop‑up player!

Shucks. I'm just a big fan of Rob and TSP!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:31pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Mark's here to mark MTV's 39th anniversary by moderating discussion of new media's impacts on international musics. : D

Hi Mark! I'm a big fan of this show, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:32pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Greetings, Rob and transitive ones.
  6:36pm kpx:

Hey Paradiseians, I have a question for anyone who might be able to answer it. not being privy to a computer I was wondering if at any time on the chat board, will notifications or alerts come up about anything or anyone, from an eternal or external source?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:39pm Bas NL:

@kpx All the time.
  6:45pm kpx:

is it possible to gain access of them to a cell phone?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:49pm Bas NL:

Through visiting the web page or by subscribing to show email lists. And some DJs do post on Facebook i think (sorry Mark).
  7:01pm kpx:

well as I said I don't have a computer so I can't go to a web page. and I want to stay away from Facebook, I'm already saddled with Google. which leaves subscribing to the email. my next question is, are they archived with each show, or can I find them separately ?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:05pm spodiodi:

kmx, what kind of device are you on? saddled with google implies something with android os -- i would think you have a web browser if that's the case (or any machine that allows you to chat here) -- do you not have a google chrome app? how are you entering messages here? through the app?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:06pm spodiodi:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:06pm Bas NL:

You beat me to it spodiodi.. ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:07pm spodiodi:

if you visit efmu.org, you can find archives of every show -- each archived show features a playlist and a copy of the chat
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:07pm spodiodi:

wfmu.org* holy crazy fingers 8^)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:07pm spodiodi:

cheers, Bas :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:09pm spodiodi:

hpx, what happens if you click this link, right here: www.wfmu.org... <- link to the recent archives page (for example)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:10pm spodiodi:

kpx* i give up on typing. :)
Avatar 7:12pm Mike W:

I’m 53 and I totally remember MTV going on the air, epochal
Avatar 7:12pm Hubig Pie:

Slight delay between the vid and the stream
  7:13pm Carmichael:

Heya Rob and various personages.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:14pm Rob Weisberg:

Hubig Pie - the video isn't sync'ed actually - this is a bit of a loosely executed concept!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:15pm Bas NL:

Run videos in picture-in-picture mode.. you can drag-enlarge the videos for better readability!
  7:19pm kpx:

@Spodiodi, something called a UMX, which I believe is an Android product. I do have a browser I'm just on a table to go to a website without having to link to a computer. now bare with me because I'm far from Tech Savvy. I've only had this phone for maybe a little less than a year, and my type board misbehaves making it hard for me to get a text out in a timely manner. plus I'm super slow.
Avatar 7:21pm Mike W:

oh, Zanzibar
Avatar 7:22pm Mike W:

sooo good, Bi Kidudé
Avatar 7:22pm Hubig Pie:

Didn't mean to nitpick, this pretty great
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:25pm spodiodi:

kpx, from what i gather umx is a brand of phone, and it would be running android, indeed. i suspect you are using the wfmu android app to chat (you installed it from the google play store, i would think)... this is all fine, and you should have a web browser installed, and shuold be able to navigate around wmu.org to find all kinds of treasure
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:25pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Zanzibar! Wonderful beguiling track.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:26pm Rob Weisberg:

Certainly HP - I just wanted to clarify that for everyone. It could be done (I would have to recruit our co-board-op Ruth for assistance with that - her main gig actually is as our WFMU video guru) but it's a lot more complicated!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:27pm spodiodi:

your phone should have a web browser too, kpx (just try clicking this-> wfmu.org and let us know how it goes
  7:27pm kpx:

now you see Spode while I'm composing a text I can't see who else is texting and by the time I post, I'm way behind. and I can't like I say click on to anything.I've tried it then something comes up saying it's invalid or something like that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:28pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Bi Kidude video rather amazing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:28pm spodiodi:

kpx - i believe that may be the nature of the app! (it is on an iphone, for example) -- you CAN, alternately, chat through the web interface... even on a phone (with a web browser, whcih most phones should have)
Avatar 7:29pm JohnEBGood:

Love the beat on this one. it's like loddy doddy dee loddy loddy dah.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:30pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

On the Drummer stream a few DJs are streaming video via twitch now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:31pm spodiodi:

kpx, if you know you have google-something on your phone, what happens if you just type wfmu into it and click the top result? it may open the web browser and bring you to the wfmu home page.

byond that, i'm not sure wht else to say here, and best i not spam the Transpacific Sound Paradise chat chat with any more tech troubleshooting (thanks for your patiendce Rob W! loving the music)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:32pm radioronan:

Greetings Rob and global citizens of the comment board! Late to the show but happy to be here now..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:32pm chresti:

Oooh fancy! Videos!
  7:34pm Ralphus:

Wow, I have this song on a Middle East Peace 2000 bootleg compilation and never knew the name or artist. Thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:35pm spodiodi:

kpx -- fyi, verified the ios app works as expected/as you've been experiencing ... you should be able to run a browser in your phone though -- like google chrome (that might be better for you, i'm not sure. but it's worth a try! good luck)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:36pm chresti:

Love looking at the Malaysian video.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:37pm Bas NL:

Time for WFMUTV?
  7:38pm kpx:

okay Spode I can get to the homepage and I can access archives but you probably miss my original question which was any notifications or alerts about anyting or anyone comes up during a chat. will that be included in the archives or will it be deleted before it's archived. or when they do come up are they separate on the side or something like that so that they won't show in archives
  7:38pm Rob and Kim:

Hey Rob. We so look forward to your show every week. It helps us remember that we are alive and that there is a world out there. THANK YOU!
Avatar 7:39pm JohnEBGood:

I feel like dancing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:39pm spodiodi:

kpx, you should try using the chat trhough the web browser and decide for yourself -- you can access any live show from the home page as well, including this one. here's the link for convenience: wfmu.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:41pm spodiodi:

on the web page version of the chat, with a side enough viewport, you can see the playlist and comments all at the same time, as well as a form to enter a new comment. if your view port is too narrow, those elements should stack on top of each other, with links to help navigate between sections
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:42pm spodiodi:

wide* enough viewport
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:44pm spodiodi:

and kpx i said earlier i verified the ios app works, when i actually meant the android version (like you have)
Avatar 7:44pm Hubig Pie:

I can't understand the lyrics of songs sung in English
  7:45pm Kpx:

Rights so, I'm looking at White text dark brown is that what you call the viewport
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:50pm spodiodi:

it *sounds* like you've successfully used the web interface, in that case ... just use it and see if you like it any better. those are your two best options to comment, i believe
  7:51pm Kpx:

Dang it you see what I mean by reading my texts. I proofread it and then it changes on me after I've post it hope you're able to decipher the foul-ups. Which I'm certain you are. well thanks for trying to help.

This set was cool. Maybe in the future there can be a type of a video-libretto in the playlist.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:13pm Ken From Hyde Park:

My video is behind the playlist. The current video I'm seeing looks like the ones from Tool.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:20pm Ken From Hyde Park:

hey if anyone's on social media I just found out my friend Kelly Brannon has been missing in Florida for 2 weeks, assumed abducted. Guess I can't post the image of the missing person poster but Im sure you can find it. Please spread the word especially if you know anyone in Florida. Kelly is a fierce warrior for social justice, she organized & participated in an Occupy March from NY to DC in 2011. Nobody deserves this but this is a real loss for society like I said she is a vocal and powerful voice for change and a really good artist too boot. Thanks
  8:31pm Doug:

Sanborn jammed with Sun Ra on Night Music, I remember Ra being surprised by his getting it, but Sanborn had been into the 60s Coltrane earlier in his career.

hi Rob!
just caught the last bit of your show -- thank goodness for archives! your shows are always the coolest -- thanks so much!
the cats, of course, were enjoying your show in AC'd comfort -- and the old "and i work for you and i slave for you in this sweltering heat!" etc. (and i was, indeed, schlepping around buying cat food, litter, etc.) never works for them -- their general response is, "And your point is -- ???"
thanks again -- STAY COOL!
