This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

Avatar 7:06pm Flash Strap:

really cool sax on that last Zazou track
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:09pm doctorjazz:

Palmieri! Cool stuff (saw him a couple off summers ago, still can play a mean piano).
Avatar 7:11pm Flash Strap:

i bet he can!
  7:11pm Dean:

I thought I recognized that painting. Haven't spent quality time with Tanguy in some time.
Avatar 7:11pm Flash Strap:

all-around great ensemble on this. everything top-notch
Avatar 7:12pm Flash Strap:

Hi Dean! yeah Tanguy is pretty tremendous at times
Avatar 7:12pm Flash Strap:

Avatar 7:13pm βrian:

I saw Tan Guy at the beach, spreading covid.
Avatar 7:14pm Flash Strap:

Hi Gary! you got me on a whole kick with it very recently & i couldn't help slotting it in eventually

Hi Brian!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:17pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Gah. Must submerge self in H2O. Keep it wyrd - I'm listening...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:24pm chresti:

Oh, those tan guys. A lot of them in Griffith Park.
Avatar 7:24pm Flash Strap:

Martin on drums/synths, Surman on reeds
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:25pm Gary:

What's that crazy, awesome painting?
Avatar 7:26pm Flash Strap:

Yves Tanguy, foundational surrealist "Storm(Black Landscape)" 1926
  7:26pm passiflora:

sexy So Far
Avatar 7:26pm Flash Strap:

i love this painting, glad you dig it Gary
Avatar 7:27pm Hams:

so far!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:27pm chresti:

It has a bottom of the sea feeling, too, the painting.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:28pm Gary:

Very loose for Tanguy, I wouldn't have guessed
Avatar 7:28pm Flash Strap:

Hi Passiflora! Hams! yeah this track is just insanely cool
Avatar 7:29pm Flash Strap:

@chresti, Gary: he did quite a few in this vein -- both more loose w/ the brushstrokes & with a sort of conflated sense of landscape/underwater-ness. here's my favorite: lh3.googleusercontent.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:30pm Ike:

Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:31pm doctorjazz:

Going to head home now, maybe catch more later, thanks, Flash!
Avatar 7:31pm Flash Strap:

@gary: imo it has a lot in common with very early Dali or certain early-mid Miro, in terms of those particular brush strokes. probably a lot of Masson in there as well, at least in a way
Avatar 7:32pm Flash Strap:

Hi Ike! yeah yeah! yeah yeah!
Avatar 7:33pm Flash Strap:

hope you see you on the other end Doc, all best. find some food out there if you can
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:36pm doctorjazz:

Pizza stop on the way home is the usual Thursday routine.
Avatar 7:40pm Flash Strap:

"air-condition" feeling very meaningful these days
  7:44pm Dean:

Yep, shares elements of Dali and Miro, for sure. It's been so long since I've spent quality time with Surrealist painters. More recently, I enjoyed a collection featuring works by Raphael (my favorite painter, perhaps?) and his contemporaries.
Avatar 7:48pm Franco Twinkie:

Flash. I'm awake. Got the nap out of the way earlier.
Avatar 7:50pm Franco Twinkie:

Dean, did you see the Raphael show at The Legion Of Honor?
  7:51pm Dean:

Dang, no! I used to drive out to the Norton Simon Museum, though, to view Madonna & Child with Book. Did you see the show at the Legion?
Avatar 7:52pm Flash Strap:

wonderful to see you so bright and bushy Franco! though you're always welcome to sleep here, it is a dream-friendly Room after all
Avatar 7:52pm Flash Strap:

Raphael is phenomenal yeah
Avatar 7:56pm Franco Twinkie:

Yes, last summer. Lots of epic scale painting there, Dean. Violence and redemption was the order of the day. He was the special FX master his day, that's for sure.
Avatar 7:57pm Franco Twinkie:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:58pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...Arthur Brown !
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:00pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

What a damned Voice.
Avatar 8:00pm Flash Strap:

really need to listen to more arthur brown, but he's sort of a small-dose guy for me i think. any one given song blows my mind but i usually don't stick with an LP
Avatar 8:00pm Franco Twinkie:

I'm neither bright or bushy, Eva, I'm having trouble typing. But I shall persist!
Avatar 8:01pm Flash Strap:

maybe i can learn to be better on this issue
Avatar 8:01pm Franco Twinkie:

N^ Sheesh!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:01pm melinda:

Hi gang!

Avatar 8:02pm Flash Strap:

Hi Melinda!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:02pm coelacanth∅:

hello Evan, Explorers
  8:02pm Dean:

Took the words right out of my mouth. I literally did not stick with that LP. Unleashed it to the used bins many years ago.

Norton Simon also has a beautiful Kandinsky.
Avatar 8:03pm Flash Strap:

hi Coelacanth!
Avatar 8:03pm Franco Twinkie:

The Coelmiester!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:04pm melinda:

I dig the painting.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:04pm coelacanth∅:

hey Franco!
Avatar 8:04pm Flash Strap:

@Rev: yeah I love his whole deal I just microdose him and it all works out for me
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:04pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

M'kay. Love that album. Needs a remix? 2nd album neat-o too...
Avatar 8:06pm Flash Strap:

me too melinda, glad you dig it
Avatar 8:06pm Franco Twinkie:

The Norton Simon has a lot of nice stuff. They get over shadowed by a the boilers, however.
Avatar 8:06pm Frog Mover:

Hey everyone! Dorf always feelin especially right
Avatar 8:07pm Flash Strap:

La Dusseldorf - Klaus Dinger's band post-Neu! Moved from drums to guitar, with his brother Thomas on drums. Thomas later did a solo album that's pretty good too
Avatar 8:08pm Flash Strap:

Hi frog Mo! i agree it's hitting right today
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:12pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...okay - for accuracy - other album I know is Arthur Brown's Kingdom Come - 'Journey' - may not be his 2nd...
Avatar 8:13pm Flash Strap:

i was just trying to untangle his discography to better know which one you meant! I need to check that one out as I don't know it
Avatar 8:14pm Flash Strap:

it is in fact his 3rd with Kingdom Come! surprised to learn this
  8:14pm Dean:

For some reason this S-F Orch. is reminding me of a brand new Mahan Esfahani release, solo harpsichord recital of 20th/21st century works: https://www.discogs.com/Mahan-Esfahani-T%C5%8Dru-Takemitsu-Kaija-Saariaho-Anahita-Abbasi-Gavin-Bryars-Henry-Cowell-Luc-Ferrari--/release/15540581 Sample here: https://www.prestomusic.com/classical/products/8773247--musique
Avatar 8:15pm Flash Strap:

I'll have to check that out
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:15pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Well I had an older brother see - & starting to be a looong time ago yerknow...opening track 'Time Captives' stuck with me. He had some association with Hawkwind?...
  8:17pm Dean:

Esfahani cut his chops on early Western stuff, which is also marvelous.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:18pm melinda:

I like the Fleetwoods
Avatar 8:18pm Frog Mover:

Love that Fleetwoods song. Just have the Dolton greatest hits which is great
Avatar 8:19pm Flash Strap:

@melinda: they are so magical. just a hushed, holy sound
Avatar 8:20pm burke:

I wish I were in a Zone Without Confusion.
Avatar 8:20pm Flash Strap:

@frogmo: i always expect to see some bargain Fleetwoods collection and i never do
  8:21pm Dean:

Speaking of harpsichord, Rocksichord: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rocksichord

This is what Sun Ra is playing.
Avatar 8:21pm Flash Strap:

Hi burke! I'm hearing that that's not an option
Avatar 8:22pm Flash Strap:

he plays rocksichord on Purple Moon, all over it, but apparently not on this track, which was long said to be minimoog and now even that is called into question
Avatar 8:23pm Frog Mover:

@flash took me a while to find a copy but its out there. If only digging would come back
Avatar 8:23pm Flash Strap:

though to my ears it does sound like it could be rocksichord, so who knows
Avatar 8:24pm Frog Mover:

Also major dig on this Dwight Sykes!
  8:24pm Dean:

Liner notes say he played both Moog and Roksichord on that track.
Avatar 8:27pm Flash Strap:

i know, but supposedly there is nonetheless contention around this - that's the wrong link btw
  8:29pm Dean:

Harpsichords take a bad rap. They're gorgeous instruments. One of the many musical highlights of my life was hearing Ton Koopman performing on my then boss's harpsichord in his home. And I might argue that *the finest recording ever on vinyl* is a recital on harpsichord of Goldberg Variations on a label supported by Yves-Bernard Andre's marvelous tube gear.

Link is to a Fleetwoods's box.
Avatar 8:32pm Flash Strap:

ah i thought you were linking to the sun ra notes of which you spoke. i love harpsichord, myself
Avatar 8:33pm Flash Strap:

Waillee Waillee truly a blessed album
  8:34pm Dean:

Ah, here's the Sun Ra image: shorturl.at/jzAHZ
Avatar 8:35pm Frog Mover:

Avatar 8:37pm Flash Strap:

Nomi's first visit to the Room, if i'm not mistaken
Avatar 8:38pm Flash Strap:

love his more abstract / weirder stuff
  8:38pm Dean:

Countertenors, too, take a bad rap. I wish I were born a countertenor.

Well, I guess I *was* born one, but I would have liked to have remained one.
Avatar 8:41pm Flash Strap:

Changes made frequent appearances at Process Church of the Final Judgment coffeehouses, or something like that. weird corner of faith: en.wikipedia.org...

Mark Hurst territory...
Avatar 8:43pm Flash Strap:

great label on this 45: img.discogs.com...
Avatar 8:44pm Franco Twinkie:

I love this song. The Gun Club did a respectable cover.
  8:44pm doctorjazz:

Back for Klaus Nomi and the following tracks, very nice!
Avatar 8:44pm Flash Strap:

a very good cover imo yeah
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:44pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Process Church lived up to its name...
Is this the original FoL ? I know it from the Gun Club...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:46pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Yerknow don't hear enuff Gun Club imo...
Avatar 8:46pm Flash Strap:

yeah Jody's the original on Fire of Love. really amazing. I do love the Gun Club however
Avatar 8:46pm Little Danny:

Parachuting in so late! Hi Evan, hi all!
Avatar 8:47pm Flash Strap:

Hi LD! was just wondering if you have that Jody Reynolds 45 in your vast stacks
Avatar 8:48pm Franco Twinkie:

Jeffrey Lee Pierce knew his stuff. Dude had deep knowledge.
Avatar 8:49pm Little Danny:

I do! I love Jody Reynolds, have pretty much everything by him including his early duet with Bobbie Gentry (pre-"Ode to Billie Joe")
  8:49pm passiflora:

Avatar 8:50pm Flash Strap:

wow, impressed! but somehow not surprised!
Avatar 8:50pm Flash Strap:

some great stuff on that Billy Ward
Avatar 8:51pm Little Danny:

You've played something from that Billy Ward LP before, no? I keep meaning to nab a copy.
Avatar 8:51pm Little Danny:

Holy Scott Walker
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:51pm Doug Schulkind:

Hello, you big-eared beauties!
Avatar 8:52pm Flash Strap:

yeah i played the title track a while back. there's a guy who always has a very expensive copy at the local record fairs and i always kick myself for leaving there
Avatar 8:52pm Franco Twinkie:

Danny,The Endless Sleep b/w Tight Capris is two sides of trouble.
Avatar 8:52pm Flash Strap:

Hi Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:53pm Gaylord Fields:

Hi, Flash Strap! Enjoying the soundscape.
Avatar 8:53pm Little Danny:

There are teen noir vibes all over Jody Reynolds, Franco!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:53pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Produced by Lennon ?
Evoking Jimmy Scott of all things wow.
Avatar 8:54pm Flash Strap:

Hi Gaylord!
Avatar 8:54pm Flash Strap:

one of Nilsson's very very best imo
  8:55pm Dean:

I used to ride the bus home from downtown LA in the '80s with a splendid lady named Lois whose former hubby was Terry Graham, drummer for JLP's Gun Club. Thems was the days of waning LA punk.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:55pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- very Scott Walker yeah !
Avatar 8:56pm Little Danny:

I haven't gotten very far with Harry Nilsson, but that track was really cool.
Avatar 8:57pm Franco Twinkie:

Danny, I will answer the unanswered question from last week tonight on your show.
Avatar 8:58pm Franco Twinkie:

We could go on about that Dean, but not here.
Avatar 9:08pm Flash Strap:

I guess I woulda thought you were a big Nilsson guy, LD! I love him to death
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09pm Doug Schulkind:

Sorry you got caught in the wane, Dean.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10pm chresti:

I used to ride the bus to downtown LA, with a blind lady I was assisting, 76-77, (my first job in LA that lasted longer than 3 days)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11pm Uncle Michael:

This is some good Bojo,
Avatar 9:11pm Little Danny:

@chresti: So many good details in your one sentence.
Avatar 9:12pm Little Danny:

These are some gnarly licks
Avatar 9:12pm Flash Strap:

sorry sorry this isn;t the Bojo this is Arnie Lawrence. forgot to to add the next song
Avatar 9:12pm Flash Strap:

that's Larry Coryell on guitar
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13pm Uncle Michael:

It's still good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13pm chresti:

Ha Danny, I'm trying to pack it all in..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Coryell aha.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15pm chresti:

Yes, it's all good, Flash.
Avatar 9:16pm Little Danny:

I wonder if these cats were hip to Paul Butterfield's "East-West"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Yeah not a bad Story 1st line chresti...
Avatar 9:17pm Flash Strap:

crazy that this was produced by Enoch Light, i love to imagine the session
Avatar 9:18pm Flash Strap:

@LD: i'd imagine so!
  9:18pm Dean:

Agreed. Nilsson was a marvel.

I, fortunately, didn't get caught in the wane. I was right there as the movement ascended and at its apex. To this day I'm grateful for having been in the right place at the right time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18pm Doug Schulkind:

Arnold Lawrence Finkelstein!

Avatar 9:24pm Flash Strap:

cover of this Dzyan is over the top: img.discogs.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Radical !
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25pm chresti:

I missed Kate in the first go-round, I was diving into Jamaican music by that time.
Avatar 9:26pm Flash Strap:

Dzyan featured Peter Giger, also of Family of Percussion
  9:26pm Dean:

The Dzyan album, like the Dusseldorf earlier, was *ubiquitous* once upon a time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27pm chresti:

You said it, Flash, that cover is over the top.
Avatar 9:29pm Little Danny:

@Dean: ubiquitous, where? Late night FM?
Avatar 9:31pm Flash Strap:

Love every chance I get to play Angel Rada. Synth master from Venezuela
Avatar 9:34pm Flash Strap:

very interesting album from Bebey, praises for which I rarely see: www.discogs.com...
  9:34pm Dean:

Record stores. I saw them all the time and, honestly, took them for granted, so I didn't acquire them. If you were shopping for progressive rock, you saw these records all the time.
Avatar 9:34pm northguineahills:

I actually didn't sleep through Evan!

I missed Kate until that cool album she put out in the 2000s
Avatar 9:35pm northguineahills:

yeah, very different from the Francis Bebey. It must be the phase where he 'found god'.
Avatar 9:38pm Flash Strap:

Not sure Bebey had such a phase exactly – it's not all that different from certain work he'd always been making – I wonder if you're thinking of Onyeabor who did have a head-on with evangelism
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39pm coelacanth∅:

well i was on the phone the whole time but Happy Birthday Ms.Bush.
the dreaming, one of my 2 favorite albums of hers
Avatar 9:39pm Flash Strap:

Bebey's work was generally excellent to the end, I selected this song because it&its album are fairly unique
Avatar 9:40pm Flash Strap:

also: warm hello and welcome NGH!
Avatar 9:40pm Flash Strap:

what is your other fave, C?
Avatar 9:41pm Flash Strap:

because The Dreaming is also one of my 2 favorite albums of hers
Avatar 9:43pm Flash Strap:

i struggle with a lot of Schmidt & Kumo because I don't much fancy that drum&bass sound but every time Schmidt returns to the Gormenghast theme it's back on for me and I love it
Avatar 9:44pm Little Danny:

You inspired me to pull out some mid-'60s Arthur Lyman for my first set, I think.
Avatar 9:45pm Flash Strap:

excellent, LD! and may I say, good to have you back
Avatar 9:47pm Little Danny:

Thank you. Felt good 'n' lazy to take a show off for no reason, even better to be back.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48pm Doug Schulkind:

Our WFMU colleague Rob Weisberg once interviewed Francis Bebey backstage during intermission of a concert (I believe at Carnegie Hall) and Bebey denied any knowledge of the Pygmy Love Song Lp.
Avatar 9:48pm Little Danny:

Thanks Evan, and thanks for the great show!
