Tonight: Discussing free speech with Scott Johnston, author, "Campusland"

By David in London and Handy Haversack. Click for full size.

Also thanks to David in London and Handy Haversack, a list of all the book recommendations (PDF) made during last week's show.

Pointers:

Campusland, by Scott Johnston

A Letter on Justice and Open Debate, aka "The Harper's Letter," by Thomas Chatterton Williams and others (July 7): "Our cultural institutions are facing a moment of trial. Powerful protests for racial and social justice are leading to overdue demands for police reform, along with wider calls for greater equality and inclusion across our society, not least in higher education, journalism, philanthropy, and the arts. But this needed reckoning has also intensified a new set of moral attitudes and political commitments that tend to weaken our norms of open debate and toleration of differences in favor of ideological conformity. As we applaud the first development, we also raise our voices against the second."

New Yorker interview with Thomas Chatterton Williams (New Yorker, July 22): "A mood or climate seems to have set in, especially in the past almost four years,... and social media — the growth of the importance of social media can’t be taken away from anything we’re talking about.... Twitter has become all-consuming, especially if you work in the media or in academia, and so it feels like Twitter has taken on this invisible, impersonal force that works through people but no one in particular, that sweeps through and enacts public humiliation and punishment..."

10 Theses About Cancel Culture (by Ross Douthat, NYT, July 14): "The internet has changed the way we cancel, and extended cancellation's reach."

Say It Ain't So, Trader Joe's (WSJ Op-Ed, July 22). See also the original Change.org petition.

A new intelligentsia is pushing back against wokeness (Forward.com, July 20): "A small group of Black intellectuals are leading a counter-culture against the newly hegemonic wokeness. They are public intellectuals like John McWhorter, a professor of linguistics at Columbia University; Thomas Chatterton Williams, a memoirist and contributor to The New York Times Magazine; Kmele Foster... Chloe Valdary... Glenn Loury... and Coleman Hughes. In being anti-woke and having experienced being Black in America, these public intellectuals scramble the racial lines of today’s debate, speaking up for many who are too afraid to voice their opinions – and facing down the mob on their behalf."

To unite the country, we need honesty and courage (by Robert P. George and Cornel West in the Boston Globe, July 15) <-- this is the best expression of what I'm trying to say.. -mark

The Caper Chase, Simpsons episode that aired April 2, 2017

Ken's show from June 24, 2020, which originally played the Patton Oswalt clip.

The Dark Psychology of Social Networks: Why it feels like everything is going haywire (by Jonathan Haidt and Tobias Rose-Stockwell in The Atlantic, December 2019)

Facebook is a threat to whatever remains of democracy in the US (interview of Roger McNamee - past Techtonic guest - in the Guardian, July 26): "when you look at hate speech, disinformation, conspiracy theories, if you take them out, the level of engagement on these platforms goes way, way down – and with it, their economic value. Hate speech, misinformation, conspiracy theories, that is the lubricant for their business."

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:28pm melinda:

Sorry if you already mentioned this before I tuned in but I think it's not just a matter of free speech, but of liberal vs. illiberal values, how we arrive at truth and resolve disagreements.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:29pm Handy Haversack:

@Mark and Tommy in Neversink: yes. I had typed a couple of things that I didn't think ended up making sense. But the forest-->trees defense seems to be one that forces of oppression are happy to use: focus on this bit of wordplay theater while we continue to extract every natural resource including human lives for the concentration of capital. If you focus on "master bedroom," the masters get to hide in *your* bedrooms.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:29pm Tommy in Neversink:

Ike..how far to we take this ...should they change the photos on the Newman's Own brands ....like the one where Paul wearing sombrero on the salsa..should we do away with all cultural references ?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:30pm spodiodi:

well said, Handy

@kevlicki welcome
  6:32pm Sam:

I actually never liked the Trader Joe’s ethnic things because I just found it corny and gimmicky. Kind of like in France how they call everything “zen.” Even cheap hotel chains always show a person sitting cross legged on a bed with some mention of “zen”. They’ve totally appropriated and commodified a non-materialist religion.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:32pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:32pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I really do want to emphasize reading Billy Bragg's current commentaries on Free Speech in relation to Accountability.
Accountability also involves society's relation to Facts.
Free Speech is not enough.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:33pm Mark Hurst:

@KenfHP delivers the goods!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:33pm Mark Hurst:

@schwartzy aw shucks
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:33pm Mark Hurst:

@Carmichael nice to see you
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:34pm ultradamno:

And if the result is for someone like Tina Fey wanting to excise blackface scenes from 30 Rock in an attempt to get ahead of the canceling/retroactive ass-covering which will do little to spare anyone's feelings but narrow the number of available examples of these images, I don't think that's helpful.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:34pm Handy Haversack:

Yeah, Tommy. There's cultural violence -- the profit-driven exploitation of other cultures. But sometimes cultural appropriation is just ... culture. Not sure how to say this. But all cultures develop by interaction with the Other. I think literally forever. Like Steiner's idea that the wild multiplicity of languages was so you could *hide* things from the people in the next valley or whatnot.

This feels unformed still, sorry, but ... yeah.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:34pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

It is of course an Election Year

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:34pm iiibeat:

Language is a virus (Burroughs) . . We are the hosts . .
There should be more energy put toward awareness of what the fuck language is instead of taking it as an (unconsciously) inherited necessity that MUST be regulated . . Too much important given to language itself. It is naturally divisive because it divides thought.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:34pm chris:

ryan, do you recall Berkeley cancelling Milo Yiannopoulos? yes, he's a douche tool, but that's an institution of higher learning who formerly was respected for its stance on free speach. i think in the context of Mark's show here, the power of social media to rally this kind of nonsense is dangerous to society.

amen, herb
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:36pm spodiodi:

yeah, even walking into a bar is a violent act
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:36pm melinda:

@Ike it's not just a matter of conservatives weaponizing the actions and beliefs of a few students. A small number of elite liberal arts schools can have a disproportionate effect on the institutions that their graduates move on to post-college when they promote illiberal values there.
  6:36pm David in London:

Carmichael, the bar was closed anyway.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:37pm chris:

i wish i had had a math prof that wise, herb.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:37pm Handy Haversack:

Which is not to ignore power dynamics, spod! That I should have said should be always centered -- and cultural violence is a HUGE force in the lives of many people and is reprehensible and awful. And is what the fight is about (well, after, you know, actual fucking violence -- but they do blend together).

I have heard this argument elsewhere from people who are not men's rights activists, same with the Laura Kipnis story and similar ones. I wouldn't be so quick to write him off, guys.

This is a quarrel as old as civilization, nothing new and never ending. Every generation has to have its Robespierre, and though it's tragic and bloody, its all a part of the normal dialectic in which the pendulum has to swing a little too far in order to get us anywhere at all. There will always be outrage, especially against the "Left", but the "Left" is usually right about its bottom message in the end.

Again on the college 'trails - I find issue with Scott bringing up that a woman interview the accused 'boys' aka legal adults. How many accused women have gone through our male-dominated justice system and only been judged or interviewed by male authorities? Is he calling that out in comparison

Door patriarchy obviously fake story

As with anything in this point of time, we have to analyze all information/documentation/testimony/etc.. and decide for ourselves what is really "true". I respect Mark, and just open to his ideas about the research and presentations of someone like David Icke.. Peace to all!!
  6:51pm David in London:

Carmichael, that’s excellent. Do your neighbours bang on the wall to signal their encouragement? My hand pumped harmonium playing can be pretty annoying too. Shall we all form a band?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:51pm Handy Haversack:

It's going to take out the very schools that give the most gift aid and have need-blind admissions and are actually trying to help. Crises like this one concentrate wealth and power. Those small liberal arts colleges might have some problems, but the universities that will survive are the ones with the deepest ties to the darkest industries.

So that will be fun.

I have to agree that this interview falls far below the usual standard for Mark’s show. I read the reviews of this book and got the sense that it was probably too shallow and specious a satire of higher education (a world with which I have some familiarity) to interest me as a reader. Every word spoken here only reinforces that impression. And hearing this guy keep comparing himself to Tom Wolfe is really grating. Not a good way for a novice novelist to present himself.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:51pm Bootsie:

I agree with some of Johnston's points, and vehemently disagree with others. Cancel culture has become problematic and bullying, and free speech has been suffering, but statistics show time and time again the percentage of false accusations against men is actually quite small.

Mark, I really like how you handled this sensitive, controversial topic. Most of those who have the courage to make these points are solidly right wing, giving the impression that it’s impossible to be progressive and support free speech and debate. But I know this isn’t the case, and we need more honest shows like this.

Oswalt really does have more to say in this brief stand-up bit than Johnston had to say in all of his answers to Mark’s questions. Agreed that he comes off as a third-rate wannabe writer of bestsellers, just cranking out interviews to flack his book.
