Oh, I don't know those; I'll have to check them out. Thanks, Peter!
  7:51pm Labros:

Hi from Athens, Greece!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:52pm Gary:

Labros, hello and welcome!
  7:53pm Labros:

The song is about a poor greek guy from Piraeus who found a rich princess from Morocco because ''greek girls are poor'' as he says
  7:54pm Labros:

''Ego Thelo Prigipesa'' = I want a princess
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:56pm Gary:

Ah, thank you, Labros!
  7:58pm Labros:

you're welcome, I'm a musician and I play these songs. Btw, the songs you have played so far are not so popular nowadays, unfortunately.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:00pm Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

Labros: so cool to hear your perspective on these tunes, thanks!
  8:02pm Labros:

This is a tradiotional melody. There's another version with lyrics talking about a guy who transported drugs and got busted
  8:04pm Labros:

Lemneiko, from the island ''Lemnos''. Zeibekiko is a popular dance.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:04pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Thx Labros !
  8:06pm Labros:

you're welcome guys. I can feel the pain of people listening to music of which they have no clue. It happens to me too

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:10pm Doug Schulkind:

"Btw, the songs you have played so far are not so popular nowadays." — Labros

"That's kind of our business model here on Give the Drummer Radio." — Doug Schulkind
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:11pm Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

right on!
  8:11pm Dean:

I doubt that too many listeners at WFMU "have no clue" about music to which they had not been previously exposed.
Avatar 8:12pm northguineahills:

The Wire did a primer on rembetika about 16 years ago (it's online if you have a subscription). I used that w/ phonetically transliterating the titles of the records I just got to Latin script to figure out what they were about. (I don't speak Greek, but the primer hads some of the same artists and titles).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:12pm Gary:

Dean!
Avatar 8:12pm northguineahills:

of course, if they were in English, I wouldn't have known what they are about>
Avatar 8:14pm northguineahills:

Oh, and Dylan Nyoukis was doing a psyche rembetika project. I think some of it can be found on Bandcamp (or ordered from his Chocolate Monk rec label).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:14pm Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

Dean: most of what i hear on WFMU is unfamiliar to me, and it just keeps piling up around me. I love it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:15pm Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

actually, it's either unfamiliar to me, or someone i know personally!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:15pm Gary:

Yeah, ha, I consider myself at least well-enough informed to "get to" do this, and I find myself in the dark most of the time I'm listening to this crazy station
  8:17pm Labros:

northguineahills
The Wire is my most favourite TV show of all times!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:17pm chresti:

ngh, cool!
  8:17pm Dean:

Right, GST. My point is that we *do* have clues, we're open to oddly unsettling stuff, we know that the avenues into music are multiple, and that even when we find ourselves in a musical dark alley, we know how to or at least want to suss out the territory.
  8:18pm Labros:

oops wrong wire I guess
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:19pm Gary:

I will say, Labros, when I posted some Stelios Kazantzidis to my music blog many years ago, a reader wrote in to ask me if I was inspired to post it by having just watched The Wire
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:20pm Gary:

I *hadn't* seen The Wire at that point, but I checked out the DVDs from the library soon after
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:21pm Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

Dean: it really is a rare treasure, this WFMU
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:24pm 23 Wolves:

Really fantastic music tonight, thanks a bunch.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:24pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Being in over my head is one of the primary reasons I'm dedicated to WFMU. You don't want your culture all figured out - you want to be *continuously* learning - & really to be submerged & swimming in it - like it's a living current - not some stagnant or desiccated formula product. Which is perhaps no more than my hunger being more insatiable than my discomfort with being unfamiliar - or my embarassment in being under-informed can keep down...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:24pm Gary:

Holy Crap, there are 23 of you, Mrs. or Mss. Wolves?
Avatar 8:25pm northguineahills:

@Labros: I love The Wire (the TV show) as well.

The rembetika primer was in The Wire (the British music and art magazine(
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:26pm 23 Wolves:

At minimum! And that is well said, RR11/63, really good distillation of what makes WFMU great.
  8:27pm zzzm:

hello. catching up late
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:28pm Gary:

Zzzm!
  8:30pm Dean:

I'm gonna push against RevRab's comment, just slightly. You also want your continuous learning to proceed in very familiar arenas. For example, I spent quality time over the weekend reading and re-reading poems of Wallace Stevens. New? No. But rewarding? Yes.
  8:31pm Labros:

@northguineahills: Yes, I know the magazine, don't know why I understood the TV show haha
Avatar 8:35pm tim abdellah:

Damn, I legit thought it was Tuesday today. Hi Gary and everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:36pm Gary:

Tiiiiimmm!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:38pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

@Dean: One major takeaway from the book 'This Is Your Brain On Music' is the idea that a large part of the appeal of music is a particular balance of familiarity & novelty. Since this is a book about what music & neurology can tell us about each other - my question is if course why does the FMUvian understand this balance so differently than the mainstteam radio listener !
I don't doubt most every FMUvian has familiar favorites - I sure as hell do - but there is also this hunger of which I speak...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:40pm Gary:

This next track goes out to 23 Wolves!
Avatar 8:40pm northguineahills:

Dutch hop!
  8:44pm EvaNeva:

@LambdaCalculus I was on the verge of thinking of being a millionaire, but i didnt.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:45pm Gary:

EvaNeva!
  8:46pm Dean:

I don't know "This Is Your Brain...," but I do get science. Such a finding--that "appeal" is a function of "familiarity" and "novelty"--is rife with ambiguity. I'm happy to let neuroscientists conduct their experiments, but at this stage in our evolution, science doesn't "get" art. Any scientist worth her credentials will admit as much.
  8:54pm EvaNeva:

This is Your Brain On Music should be renamed This Is Your Brain Convincing You That There Is Any Point To This Book Whatsoever
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:00pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Haha! Its a fairly dense book - it's not reducible to that observation - if it deserves to be called one or not. I also found it interesting to learn of the part different parts of the brain play in processing a sound - & the fact it happens in so many of them...
  9:01pm EvaNeva:

He's making it all up
  9:02pm EvaNeva:

God absolutely is bullshit
  9:03pm zzzm:

maan working in kallisto as we speak
  9:04pm Dean:

I don't imagine it's a matter of "making it up," but I do wonder what the scope of "processing a sound" encompasses.

Some pop science jerk-offs are hubristic. I have no idea what this guy thinks, but...baby steps, folks...baby steps. We learn incrementally.
Avatar 9:04pm northguineahills:

i read peer review journals for fun (there might be something wrong w/ me, I mean, who does that?)
