What do they do?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05am Squints59:

This Quincy number is delightfully retrocious. Is this a Kurt Baker project or is that just an eerie similarity?
  11:05am clarke:

they were designed to give an analog sound to transistor amps - warmer. but, if you put them thru a tube amp - uh, look out.

Hi Baby, Hi Handy, Hi Michael, Hi All!

Avatar #1 Hit Supporter Marathon 2021 Swag For Life Member 11:06am Frank In Queens:

@clarke: Nah, the show was over by 7:30 so plenty of time to recover for the morning.
  11:07am clarke:

how was??
  11:08am clarke:

i will probably watch it later, today.
  11:08am gf2002:

Arion Tubulator twins! I bought an Arion analog delay in '92 used for 20 bucks and it's still one of my favorite pedals for classic tape delay.
  11:08am clarke:

will have to seek out the arion delay - i am certainly happy with their product.

Good morning folks!

@clarke, pretty fantastic. Lots of new stuff, deep cuts, and neglected classics. Doug played the hollow body he uses in Bambi Kino and the tone was great.

Avatar #1 Hit Supporter Marathon 2021 Swag For Life Member 11:11am Frank In Queens:

Apparently he doesn't like to tour with it, so as this was a one-off gig, he used it for this show.
  11:12am clarke:

yeah - it would be a little dangerous to bring that out on the road - with caterwauling singer, etc.

The black Les Paul is just way more durable.
  11:13am clarke:

  11:14am gf2002:

Arion pedals used to be the sleepers to find on the cheap, but people found out how good they can sound (and can be modded) and the prices shot up! I have the Arion digital reverb too, nice sounds.

As far as "Secaucus 7" I think it was certainly "inspiration" for "The Big Chill" (which I didn't like much, but haven't seen since it came out). Sayles is a varied, gifted filmmaker but haven't seen anything of his in about 20 years (his films don't seem to play long, even here in the NYC area). Any of his films until the mid-90s or so is worth checking out, there's fantasy, union/labor-related dramas, teen-romance, etc.
  12:40pm clarke:

i think what makes Explorer's Club exciting for me is how many different things they can squeeze into a 3-min tune. i value their 'songwriting'.
Avatar 12:40pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Originality is a virtue - if it's something that deserves to have an origin.
But it's not the only virtue.
I don't mind being reminded of The Turtles - or appreciating their skill in reproducing it - & they certainly aren't trying to put it over on us that they created it. On the contrary.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:41pm Squints59:

All I want from a cover, whatever its arrangement, is simple joy in performing the song. Saw Blitzen Trapper open for the DBTs in March 2014 and they did a faithful job on Rocky Mountain Way. I loved it because (1) I wasn't looking for it and (2) they were so clearly having a ball doing it.

While SNL is hardly what it was, it's had occasional funny moments over the last few seasons (& yes, it has TOO MANY unfunny white boys doing self-indulgent "movies" which make me miss Albert Brooks & Tom Schiller even more). Every so often we'll tune in & be amazed at the quality, while other nights it's just a disaster (esp. the first show of the year). But yes---the musical guests are almost all teeny-bopper or rap-oriented & usually horrible, which makes me wonder how the hell Father John Misty snuck on a year or 2 ago.
  12:43pm clarke:

it ain't a spoiler if it happens in the first 10 mins! @DG: i love all of Sayles other films - which is why Secaucus 7 was such a disappointment to me. say it ain't so, john.
Avatar #1 Hit Supporter Marathon 2021 Swag For Life Member 12:44pm Frank In Queens:

@DG, I've heard both 7 and Chill are similar, which is why we're watching Chill tonight. We've been on a Sayles kick lately, having watched 7, Brother, Matewan, Eight Men, and Lone Star over the course of 2 weeks. We just got, Baby It's You from Netflix so that'll complete his early catalog for us. Later films have been recommended, but their descriptions don't seem that appealing to me.
  12:44pm davefromtoronto:

hi clarke - and RRN63 - i was just gonna say that - i love the turtles but their success was based on doing other peoples tunes but filtering them their own unique sound. i don't find their covers as compelling as the obscure tunes they found and made their own.
