"I listened yesterday. It's no reflection on you but I could'nt see where you were going or what you were going for. This early seventies thing did'nt get noticed the first time and you talk about friends of like Dealney and Bonnie who had records out like we're supposed to remember who they are. Then you play this long winded free jazz stuff that really grates on my nerves. And that noise without a beat and sounds like someones being pinched. Then you play a reggae song, I think you called it Dub, to what, be cool? You seem to really fetishize the whole folk thing too which is obnoxious to us who don't even care. I liked it when you played that punk song though. I like Joe Belock a lot." (Visit homepage.)

@Handy Haversack: Since nothing terribly important is going on right now, can I ask you a question? The other day you mentioned a cocktail called "Am I Blue?". Were you talking about this www.diffordsguide.com... ? And if so, where did you find the birch spirit? It sounds very tasty, I've always loved the flavor of birch beer .

No, YB, the one I made got its blue from Johnnie Walker Blue, which, uh, I did *not* use.

1. 5 oz JW Blue or, you know, Dewar's
.5 oz. sweet verm,
.25 oz. Luxardo maraschino liq.
Dash bitters
Stir in glass w ice and strain into champagne flute, top up w/champagne
Garnish with burnt orange peel

Greenpoint is damp. I will know more later as we have some supply runs to accomplish today. Would really help me out if there was a single local store that sold Cointreau, cheese, and dog food.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43am coelacanth∅:

you can have no fruit flies for 4 years then the minute you have a banana or an onion out that's starting to rot they're right there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45am steveo:

fruit flies like a banana
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45am Handy Haversack:

They come out of the fruit. Hence the name. You also get them if you have a toad incubate a rooster's egg on a dung pile for forty nights.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57am Threemoons:

Grats, Morphe'!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58am Handy Haversack:

ami ad, we have been using a garlic and cayenne tea (with a smidge of dish soap) to keep the mosquitoes at least a little at bay.
  11:02am ami ad:

@Handy Haversack:Sweet. Been making a multi purpose vinegar/touch of dish soap/essence of water mix,for the giant flies when I go on the fire escape.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03am coelacanth∅:

i've used both beer and vinegar traps with okay results; but the most effective way is to just not have the things they like out at room temperature if they're already ripe. the fruit flies wont be there with the bananas until the fruit is ready to eat anyway.
  11:06am Vixo:

That Art Blakey track was incredible!!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06am steveo:

love this one too
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Rule 1: Don't feed pest.
...Yes but is there a peer reviewed Facebook meme to support such a claim...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07am Handy Haversack:

Yes, fruit flies signal that your bananas are *almost* ready to be banana bread.

Still have not made it down to Windsor Terrace for kimchi, by the way. Local sources continue to be priced absurdly.
  11:08am diana:

i mixed vinegar, dish soap, and splenda into a syrupy punch. splenda kills just about anything and i had some of those small packages. used a shallow jar lid to create a miniature pool of death. lots of floaters.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08am coelacanth∅:

tomatoes are trickier because they may have juice fermenting on them from other tomatoes, or fermenting juice around the stem before they're ripe.
if they're kept dry they should be okay. also could be kept in a sealed paper bag so the flies can't get in. just check them often for they'll ripen faster, and reseal every time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09am karlward:

I kill flies by blasting the Phil Collins Big Band
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10am coelacanth∅:

Handy i guess then you'd use the bag method, for "overripe" bananas for bread?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am Ken From Hyde Park:

If your kitchen ceiling is lined with cobwebs like Studio JA, you have a natural system to handle fruit flies. And to deter visitors.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Splenda kills anything haha.
Avatar 11:11am John Allen:

leland sklar’s beard also good for fly catching
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am coelacanth∅:

oh no, Phil Collins has a big band? my guess is that'd work on me too.
  11:11am diana:

that will do it. cheers! have a fly less weekend.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am Handy Haversack:

Well, coela, I'm not a baker, but my aunt makes the best banana bread I have ever had, and she thinks the bananas need to be pretty much dripping out of the peels.

This Splenda info is useful and terrifying.
Avatar 11:12am Abbie from Mars:

This new Nihiloxica record might be one of my favs of the year
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12am coelacanth∅:

yes good info on the splenda!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15am coelacanth∅:

Handy my sister does that as well.
not quite dripping.
...come to think of it she never has fruit flies by the bananas. maybe because the area around them is always clean and dry?
hmm.
...i'm going to investigate this next time i'm there.

@Handy@11:07, I made it over there. Haven't tried their traditional kimchi yet, but the radish version is solid. There's little packaged banchan items available as well. The rolled egg banchan is great. Turns out there's also a Syrian lady making hummus and muhammara! The muhammara is really good!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20am Handy Haversack:

Ken my nephew claimed that when he was in a "camp"like situation (in costa rica? hungary? i forgot) he had the top bunk. he did not clear away the spider webs, as everyone else did, which occupied the space above his bed for a few feet, up to the ceiling. he had i think he said a foot of clearance.
the other folks all got brutalized by mosquitoes the whole time there and he did not. of course i asked and he he said no, no spider bites either.
