Usual Sunday morning, gloved, masked, getting groceries, listening to the drummer stream, will chime back in on D:O when we're back and sanitized.

Awright! Let's get the French press pressin' to these percolatin' sonics & let the goodness flow...
Avatar 9:11am Sem:

Yes, Jeff, Carol wound up her show w/ Slayer and something called, approx,: It's raining blood.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12am Jeff Golick:

@Revolution Rabbit Nov63, sounds like a plan!
Avatar 9:13am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

The local had jackfruit as a sub for pulled pork - & as the neighborhood veggie I felt it my duty...but nah. I didn't need pork replaced in the 1st place...I bet you could set me right with that though...
Avatar 9:13am hyde:

@sem a bit of metal pedantry: it's "reign in blood".
Avatar 9:14am Listener Gregory:

Morning all. I had a 9:10 appointment for a Brazilian earwax. I guess I'm a little late.
Avatar 9:16am hyde:

@revrab i made a pulled jackfruit thing a couple months ago and didn't really love it. will continue to stick to the real thing for Kentucky Derby parties
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16am Jeff Golick:

Well, better late than never, @Listener Gregory. Plus now you have clean ears!

Yes, @DJpeterDE!
Avatar 9:22am Sem:

Thx, hyde. Noted w/ pleasure.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27am WR:

So Ms. Santos Silva is a trumpeter. Interesting, does this release really have only 2 tracks and the other listed are to make the title?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29am Jeff Golick:

There are five tracks (making up the title). I think she's elected only to make two available for streaming.

Ooh another solo bass Lonely Woman! I have Marcin Oles.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57am Jeff Golick:

Who is Bob Florence, @DJpeterDE?

Mornin', @coelacanth∅!
Avatar 9:58am Listener Gregory:

So, this is THE Richard Thompson?
Didn't Bob Florence do the arrangements for SuperSax or some such?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59am Jeff Golick:

Thanks for that, @Doug! If anything would bring you out, I suppose it's BoB n Dudu.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am coelacanth∅:

hey Sem!
Avatar 10:02am Listener Gregory:

Bob Florence was a west-coast big band arranger who received 15 Grammy nominations. That is why we have all heard of him. (But he did not do SuperSax.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13am doctorjazz:

Hi, Jeff and Outies!
  10:15am DJpeterDE:

I was thinking Florence had a university association but maybe I’m wrong? But the 25 hour thing seems to be aiming at NTSU big bands

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26am doctorjazz:

I complained before that the Dudu Pakwana LP was $26 +22.50 shipping at the Matsuli web site. I got excited for a moment when I saw you put up the Bandcamp link-same prices. Maybe I'll just go for the digital download...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27am Jeff Golick:

That's some good gush, @LG.

Hellooo, @JtotheK!
  10:28am Dean:

I'm not finding any of the Bob Florence records I have on Discogs, nor do I find an obit in LAT. But I do find a story from Oct. 3, 1996, that opens:

About 35 years ago, Bob Florence wrote an arrangement of Thelonius Monk's classic blues tune "Straight, No Chaser." The late critic Leonard Feather played a recording of the work for Monk in the course of doing a piece for Down Beat magazine titled "The Blindfold Test," and the revered composer-pianist was quite pleased.

"It was crazy. It sounded so good, it made me like the song better," Monk said in the magazine article. "I'd say it was top-notch."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28am Jeff Golick:

@doc: the download does come with a pdf of the liner notes, if that helps any.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29am Jeff Golick:

Thanks for that, @Dean! Hello, Dean!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35am coelacanth∅:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36am doctorjazz:

True, Coel, but the gatefold LP sounded so appealing....but I just can't payas much for shopping as for the LP. Likely Will go for the download...

It's a lower level recording, for sure.
Avatar 10:47am hyde:

my phone is toying with me today. i was listening to DO on the popup, but then it kept quitting. so i tried the app, but i could only listen to Gary's show, it wouldn't open the stream .pls file. i even tried setting the file's "open with" to the app, but it couldn't find it. so i closed the app--but Gary's stream just kept playing with the app closed!

so i gave up and got my laptop.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49am doctorjazz:

Hmmm, using headphones initio 3 my Android phone, website pop up, smooth so far...web stuff is so weird.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50am Jeff Golick:

Geez, @hyde, sorry to hear that and thanks for making the extra effort to be here!

Murray Sounds like he chokes off his notes as he pushes them out, interesting sound.
Avatar 10:51am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Mercury Stationary Direct this morning (Retrograde stopped). Takes a while to pivot & go forward...
Avatar 10:52am hyde:

@doc it's my phone. it just really seems to have trouble with mp3 streams in general. you'd think in 2020 a basic Samsung phone could handle that sort of thing. but apparently not.

i did get to listen to some good reggae, so that's a plus. but i missed Alice Coltrane. that's a minus.
Avatar 10:53am Listener Gregory:

Those David Murray groups of the 80s are a high point in the history of jazz, in my humble opinion.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53am doctorjazz:

Some people find this version of the FMU app works well for them...
Avatar 10:53am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Avatar 10:56am hyde:

@doc oh, huh. i'll give that a shot. thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58am doctorjazz:

My browser on my phone posts the number of open tabs, until you get to 100, then it just posts a smiley face. I had to close a bunch, notes have 93 open...
Avatar 11:00am Listener Gregory:

@doctorj, you really live on the edge. When I find that I've got 5 tabs, I start to sweat.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00am doctorjazz:

Sure, @hyde, I mostly use the web page/pop up, but I found that app works in my car. Laid out a but differently, so you have to play with it a bit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01am fred:

Hello Jeff and listeners. In a show of faith I don't really have, I just bought tickets for dance shows that may or not happen in the coming year
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03am doctorjazz:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14am coelacanth∅:

yeah maybe i got in the habit when i had an old computer that was freezing up or shutting itself down a lot. but i just figure the least amount of burden will result in better performance and longer life
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14am fred:

@Jeff: Not really optimism: if these shows get canceled, some of the money will go to support these artists (the shutdown is crushing for dance companies). I declined to get a refund for canceled shows, I intend to do the same in the future
Avatar 11:16am Listener Gregory:

@ coelacanth∅, I grew up in the old days when your hard drive was always filling up, your memory ran out when you had more than two applications open, and you had to worry about whether your document would fit on the floppy disk. This has made me much more conservative about these things, even when there is no need.
Avatar 11:17am Listener Gregory:

@Jeff, have to get out and walk. Will follow up on the archive. Thanks, and happy birthday to Rose Out!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52am fred:

Since there's some room in the statuary real estate now, what about a John Zorn statue somewhere? He'd probably hate that so much he'd release a dozen records a month. Win!
