Avatar 4:06pm Little Danny:

Musically I would even venture that the PNW includes Vancouver in terms of the territory of THAT SOUND
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:08pm Funky16Corners:

You're probably right. I'm sure the big showbands played over the border as well, like the Viceroys and the Dynamics
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:09pm Michael 98145:

i'm truly impressed. these are all vinyl?

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:11pm Funky16Corners:

I normally do two hours on Thursdays

Oh, I see the Thursday spot on the page over here listing the music

You didn't know what you were doing when you were 10, hahaha!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:13pm Bas NL:

I used to DJ 45s.. that's tough work! Much appreciated Larry!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:13pm Funky16Corners:

Avatar 4:23pm Franco Twinkie:

Candy, to continue last nights saga: That girlfriend was in a country western band up in the Sierras, I went up to visit and we went to hang with one of her band mates at his house. His wife said he was out in the garage, so we went and beat of the door and he came out with Sean Bonniwell, the singer from The Music Machine. Of course, I was over the moon, I told him I use to watch them on T.V. when I was kid. He paused for a moment and said "You know, I invented punk rock"(!?!)

Avatar 5:40pm Little Danny:

You mean the "Na Na Na Na" part, Larry?

  6:02pm Dean:

Owner of the Whittier label died in October of last year.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:05pm Funky16Corners:

Who was that, Dean?
  6:06pm Dean:

Eddie Torres.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:06pm Funky16Corners:

I'll have to look him up.
Avatar 6:07pm Franco Twinkie:

One time I was talking to Don Van Vliet and he was admiring my jacket and then said apropos of nothing "You know, I invented punk rock." I know you think I must be making this crap up, but it's true! Okay, I'm retiring those two stories from WFMU. I've squeezed as much juice out of them as I can.

I used to drive Whittier Blvd. to work in downtown LA during the '80s. Passed under that sign every day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:09pm Funky16Corners:

Thee Midniters had a tune called 'Whittier Boulevard"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:10pm coelacanth∅:

my first time hearing that one Franco ...and it shouldn't surprise anyone that he'd say that, and probably think it
  6:11pm Dean:

Well, of course! I worked at a record store on...Whittier Blvd.! But it was in Whittier, which is 15 miles or so east of East LA. Still, in the '70s we had "cruisers" even in Quaker Whittier.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:12pm coelacanth∅:

this group was uncalled for
Avatar 6:13pm Franco Twinkie:

I'll tell you about the time I saw Thee Midnighters practicing in a garage a couple of block from my house in 1966 another time. I think I'm wearing out my good will.
  6:14pm Dean:

Ha, coelacanth∅! You just know they were hoping for airplay so that the DJ would back-announce, "Now, that was uncalled for." Buddy of mine wrote a song he titled, "My Favorite Song," in hopes DJ's would be forced to proclaim it...
Avatar 6:14pm zivilars:

Man, I can't believe I missed the show so far ... How long is this still going, another two hours? This is the four hour special, right?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:14pm Funky16Corners:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:16pm Matt from New Orleans:

Franco when Dean’s around it earns you extra opportunities. Dean if you’re going to try to make jokes, they should be able to be understood by more than .000001% of the population. Otherwise they’re just random unintelligible nonsense.

No worries! It'll all be in the archive later.

  6:18pm Dean:

It's cool, Matt from New Orleans. I don't understand my own jokes. And as for random unintelligible nonsense, well, there's an ironing board reading Eugene O'Neill forever.
  6:19pm CC:

Yep!!!
Avatar 6:20pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

Larry, I tried to google your show & Dan Daniel - I only found Dan Daniel among the artists you have played, but could not locate his "Is That All There Is" version from your archives. I'm sure you have played it, but there are things even that awful Google monster can not find. In this case it is a pity.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:27pm Funky16Corners:

@CC - I got to see him once in the early 80s. He was great.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:27pm Funky16Corners:

Thanks Mark!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:28pm Funky16Corners:

We've now set a record for the number of comments on an episode of Testify! Shattered it actually.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:28pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

That MCoys sounded very Zombies...sans keys.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:28pm Funky16Corners:

This is very late in the game for them. My fave of their singles
Avatar 6:29pm still b/p:

For me, that was an unknown, creditable and appreciated version of Fever. One of the day's treats and feats.
  6:29pm Dean:

Yeah, but to be fair, you should report in terms of comments/hour.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:29pm Funky16Corners:

If I knew how to drill that down I would
  6:30pm Mark R:

Sans keys is a crucial sans, though. Keys was kind of the Zombies whole thing. That and Colin's amazing voice. I watched them on the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremonies last year (I know, I know) and he sounded great. Most singers his age have to step all the songs down a bit, but he sounds like he has the same vocal range he did when he was 20.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:30pm Funky16Corners:

These guys were from down by Atlantic City!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:30pm coelacanth∅:

Dean (@6.14) the problem with that song title is it invites someone like me, if i were a dj, to say "and that song is called 'my favorite song', although it's definitely not my favorite song!"...unless of course it did turn out to be my favorite song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:31pm Funky16Corners:

@Mark - The Zombies are one of the most sophisticated British Invasion bands
  6:32pm Mark R:

Yeah I think so. "Oracle & Odessey" is a classic. I'm ashamed to say I only discovered it a couple years ago.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:33pm Funky16Corners:

Even their early songs had a melodic sophistication that was beyond most of their contemporaries
  6:33pm Mark R:

This bass player's really good, but you can barely hear him on this tinny, treble mix.
  6:34pm Mark R:

I literally remember hearing "She's Not There" coming through the wall of my sister's bedroom (hers was right next to mine).
  6:34pm Dean:

So true, coelacanth∅. I think his ambition was, as we say these days, aspirational. And the premise was faulty: which DJ would play it at all? (But he is a really good songwriter. When we were roommates he auditioned for Sparks. Did not get the job, obviously.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:34pm Bas NL:

Q65! :D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:35pm Funky16Corners:

My fave Dutch 45!
  6:35pm Dean:

So if MC5 is a band with five guys from the Motor City, is Q65 that many guys from Quebec?
  6:35pm Mark R:

Ah, the scratches that indicate love! If you heard it without those exact scratches now, it would sound weird, wouldn't it, Larry?
  6:36pm Mark R:

Did I read an earlier playlist correctly, that Sparks have a new album out?
  6:37pm Dean:

Yes, they do.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:37pm Funky16Corners:

@Mark - That Q65 45 is one of the first reasonably expensive 45s I bought, back in the mid 80s, when you had to respond to mailing lists.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:37pm Candy-O'67:

I still can't believe Mouse and the Traps are from Tyler, TX! Not a big town at all
  6:37pm Mark R:

Mouse and the Traps is one of those band names you just instantly regret as soon as you see it in print.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:37pm Candy-O'67:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:38pm Funky16Corners:

The Plimsouls covered this on their second album
  6:38pm Mark R:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:39pm Candy-O'67:

There were quite a few great garage bands from TX. I was just a wee child back then. Born in '67. Moved to TX when I was 2!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:40pm Funky16Corners:

There's a great documentary about TX garage bands, called "Teen Beat A Go Go"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:42pm Candy-O'67:

I need to check that out, Larry. I live in Austin now for past 6 years. Lived in SoCal for 14 1/2 years before that, but grew up mostly in Houston
