Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:00pm Matt from New Orleans:

Hi Larry & everyone
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:01pm Funky16Corners:

Hey Matt!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:03pm Matt from New Orleans:

The highest thing here is the levee. I live in a giant bowl.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:04pm Funky16Corners:

Are you close to the water?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:05pm Matt from New Orleans:

I live pretty close to the river but I can’t get to it near me. I have to go a few miles upriver to The Fly, an open space on the river in Audubon Park.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:06pm Funky16Corners:

Where is everybody?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:06pm Funky16Corners:

OK
Avatar 3:06pm WR:

Hello Mr. Funky16Corners. What adventure have you forbus today?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:06pm Funky16Corners:

Hey WR! All covers!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:06pm Matt from New Orleans:

An all cover show
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:07pm Matt from New Orleans:

I haven’t heard the Donovan song in a bit and Herbie isn’t helping me remember it. I’m digging this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:07pm listener Rey:

Hello! I usually catch up with your show on the archive. So pleased to be here when you are live!
Avatar 3:08pm Sem:

Hello, Larry the G, and the testifying crowd.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:08pm Funky16Corners:

Hey Rey! Sem!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:09pm Funky16Corners:

@Rey - Glad you could be here to catch it live!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:12pm dutchtheo:

Hi, Larry and the F16C testifiers
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:12pm listener Rey:

had to look it up but poke salad can be poisonous!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:12pm Matt from New Orleans:

A Tony Joe two-fer
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:15pm Funky16Corners:

There's always room for more Tony Joe!
Avatar 3:16pm Jeff Ash:

Greetings from work in Wisconsin!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:16pm Funky16Corners:

@Rey - I remember reading up on how it gets prepared. It's a lot of work!
Avatar 3:16pm Erica:

I'm tuning in. Just drying my hair again.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:16pm Funky16Corners:

Hey Theo!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:16pm Funky16Corners:

Jeff! Erica!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:16pm Matt from New Orleans:

I’m digging the arrangement. I’m pretty indifferent to Elton’s original.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:17pm doctorjazz:

Hi Larry and Testifiers!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:18pm Funky16Corners:

Hey Doc!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:18pm Funky16Corners:

@Matt - I have a really good version by Odetta. I'll play it on the next covers show
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:20pm Matt from New Orleans:

I saw Odetta at Castle Clinton in Battery Park at a free show in the summer. I saw so many good shows there in the late 90s/early 00s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:23pm doctorjazz:

Sounds a lot like CCR.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:24pm Funky16Corners:

I don't think it's possible to cover this song without sounding like Fogerty
Avatar 3:26pm Brian in UK:

Hello Larry and groovers. I am guessing that you have a vault as big as champagne tunnels at Eperenay.
Avatar 3:26pm Erica:

I'll say Larry and Matt. It sounds like it's taken from one of those low budget lps of sound alike covers from when the song first came out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:27pm Matt from New Orleans:

Erica Talking about the Enoch Light cover?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:29pm Funky16Corners:

Hey Brian!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:29pm Matt from New Orleans:

I think Dana Gillespie never made it into my consciousness
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:29pm Funky16Corners:

I don't think any of her stuff got released in the US
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:31pm listener Rey:

Recognized this melody immediatel. Today I finally learn it's name.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:32pm Funky16Corners:

Originally done by Lee Morgan
Avatar 3:32pm Erica:

No Matt I meant the song covered by the Short Kutts.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:33pm Funky16Corners:

As far as I know the Short-Kuts were a white, Memphis-based soul/rock band. They had a couple of 45s
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:34pm Matt from New Orleans:

I Called Him Morgan was a fantastic documentary about Lee & his common law wife who murdered him.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:35pm Matt from New Orleans:

Did Petula record this at Stax?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:35pm Funky16Corners:

No, American Studios
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:37pm listener Rey:

I was referring to Soulful Strut. Always thought it was by Sergio Mendes
Avatar 3:37pm Sem:

Always liked this melody.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:38pm Matt from New Orleans:

Still in Memphis. I figured it was somewhere there based on the LP name. It was sounding like a Chips Moman production so I should have known.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:38pm Funky16Corners:

@Rey - No, Young-Holt Unlimited and in the vocal version 'Am I The Same Girl' by Barbara Acklin
Avatar 3:38pm Erica:

Just when I thought I wouldn't hear another version of this 10cc song...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:38pm Funky16Corners:

I don't know of any other covers of this one
Avatar 3:42pm Sem:

I'm Not in Love covers: secondhandsongs.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:43pm Funky16Corners:

Wow! I have to go looking for some of those!
Avatar 3:44pm Erica:

I heard a couple other ones Larry. Forget who by.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:44pm Funky16Corners:

I want to hear Richie Havens and Peggy Lee
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:46pm listener Rey:

That's a lot of covers, a whole shows worth, but definitely NOT suggesting that!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:48pm Funky16Corners:

No worries there
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:54pm Matt from New Orleans:

I like the Chris Kenner & Timmy Thomas covers on this album as well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:55pm Matt from New Orleans:

I think it’s actually Black Smith Larry
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:56pm Matt from New Orleans:

I would have gone with the live version on Stop Making Sense
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:56pm Funky16Corners:

Yup!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:57pm doctorjazz:

Heard this before I heard Al Green's version-both so different, both great!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:57pm Funky16Corners:

Me too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:59pm Matt from New Orleans:

I feel like Tina’s bass is higher in the mix in the live version
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:00pm Matt from New Orleans:

And Bernie Worrell
Avatar 4:03pm zivilars:

Damn, I'm late, but half a show is better than nothing ... Hi Larry and everybody else.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:07pm Funky16Corners:

Hey Zivilars!
Avatar 4:08pm zivilars:

This seems to be a great cover show judging by the playlist so far – not the usual suspects
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:09pm Funky16Corners:

Thanks! Always digging deep!
Avatar 4:12pm Erica:

Need to seek out that Harper's Bizzare album from the 70s. Just for curiosity sake.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:13pm Funky16Corners:

It's pretty good. Not as across the board good as their 60s stuff but some nice covers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:19pm Funky16Corners:

This predates Peggy Lee's version
Avatar 4:20pm zivilars:

Just dicovered you're on air tomorrow, too, with four hours of Garage Fuzz Jangle Shake and Phase – good news!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:20pm Funky16Corners:

Yes! 3-7, all fuzz, all the time!
Avatar 4:21pm zivilars:

I hope I can tune in live, that sounds like a show I can't afford to miss! (Otherwise, I'll listen in the archives ...)
Avatar 4:23pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

hey larry plus listeners
Avatar 4:23pm zivilars:

hi photocopy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:24pm Funky16Corners:

Hey Photocopy!
  4:25pm still b/p:

Saw it was Uggams doing that song and had to hurry hurry start it up on phone and ahhhhhh ears caught a portion. Catch and release. Catch good measures and release general tensions.
Avatar 4:25pm WR:

The Leslie Uggams version is great and old person me appreciates those lyrics way more than 20 something me did.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:25pm Funky16Corners:

Hey SBP!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:26pm Funky16Corners:

@WR - I know what you mean
Avatar 4:27pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

i was inspired to google this, indeed that the first released record of " Is That All There Is" but not the first public performance which was in 1967 by Georgia Brown (TV).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:29pm Funky16Corners:

The first release (though promo only) was a weird version by NY DJ Dan Daniels. I've played it on the show before. Uggams' version was produced and arranged by Leiber and Stoller
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:31pm Funky16Corners:

I've been looking for a recording of Georgia Brown doing it. Apparently her version was for British TV.
Avatar 4:34pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

Yes, released but quickly withdrawn by request. Leslie Uggams' version does not have the laconic drama of Peggy Lee's, but the arrangement was quite interesting. So, it was made by the songwriters, cool. What I did not know until now was that was inspired by Thomas Mann, to the point of direct quotes in the lyric (from his 1896 story Disillusionment (Enttäuschung).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:36pm Funky16Corners:

Yes. Leiber and Stoller were not happy about the Dan Daniel version. The Peggy Lee version is definitive, but it's cool to hear other arrangements.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:37pm Matt from New Orleans:

Were the Jaynetts the original recorded version?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:37pm Funky16Corners:

BTW It is The Long Rally With Scott McDowell filling in for Explorers Room tonight:
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:37pm Funky16Corners:

@Matt - Yes
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:38pm Matt from New Orleans:

I heard ? perform Sally
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:39pm Matt from New Orleans:

Live I mean
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:39pm Funky16Corners:

Wow! I'll bet that was cool!
Avatar 4:39pm Brian in UK:

Not many GP covers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:40pm Funky16Corners:

No, which is why it was especially weird to hear Sylvester do one (while Gram was still around)!
Avatar 4:42pm zivilars:

great version
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:43pm Funky16Corners:

Those Hot Band albums Sylvester did before he started recording dance music are good
Avatar 4:44pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

I have a scary feeling the Georgia Brown performance might not exist in any form anymore - as we all know, broadcasting companies were all too eager to reuse film and tape (like Finnish Broadcasting company YLE wiping Jimi Hendrix's 1967 TV performance - OK, it was only reluctant miming from him, but....). I'd still be glad to hear it - I mean 2 versions of Pink Floyd's TOTP See Emily Play performances surfaced well after the fact. The Dan Daniel version is probably in your archives, Larry? Gotta check it out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:45pm Funky16Corners:

It should be (I'm pretty sure I played it). If it isn't let me know and I'll put it on the list
Avatar 4:45pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

Love this Karen Dalton version.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:46pm Funky16Corners:

She had such a unique voice
Avatar 4:49pm Sem:

McCulloch is feelin' it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:49pm dutchtheo:

Thanks Larry, for the art of the cover!
Liked the Gabor Szabo, where the cover art for this Under the covers vol.4 is from...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:50pm Funky16Corners:

Thanks Theo!
Avatar 4:51pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

Zivilars, you were from Germany/elsewhere in Europe? I gotta say (with the 7 hour time difference to NJ/NY) sometimes my hours are crazy due to staying up in the company of all the good tunes & shows here
Avatar 4:51pm Sem:

Been a whole lot of fun, Larry. Thanks, and see you next time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:51pm Funky16Corners:

Thanks Sem!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:51pm Handy Haversack:

Hey, all. Hey, Photocopy Cha Cha. Just wanted to say hello since I had to miss Julie's show. Time and tide wait for no one!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:51pm Matt from New Orleans:

Enjoying Alex’s vocals
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:52pm Matt from New Orleans:

Thanks Larry. Enjoyed the covers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:52pm Funky16Corners:

@Matt - yeah, this is an unusual one from the Box Tops
Avatar 4:53pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

Hey Handy, how's it going? I did noticed you weren't on the Julie's board today. Well there are the archives....
Avatar 4:54pm zivilars:

Thanks for the show, Larry – will catch up the missed first hour in the archives later
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:54pm Matt from New Orleans:

I’ll catch your set tomorrow in the archives Larry. Have a good day everyone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:55pm Handy Haversack:

Good, Cha Cha! I was out on the river and having a good time, though I hate missing Julie's show.

Glad to catch these last few songs -- thanks, Larry!
Avatar 4:55pm zivilars:

@Photocopy: Yeah, I'm from Germany – you're in Europe, too? Really difficult to catch some favorite shows in my/our time zone – however, for some shows which are late at night in the US, it's easier for us I guess ... :)
Avatar 4:55pm Erica:

Interesting covers Larry. Have a great day everyone!
Avatar 4:56pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

@4:55 zivilars: yep, Finland - I have lived in Germany for nearly 4 years (all the 3 city states actually)
Avatar 4:58pm zivilars:

Photocopy: wow, that's great. Never been to Finland, unfortunately, I'm sure I would love it there and finding a quiet place in the nature without many people around me :)
Avatar 4:58pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

@4:55 Handy Haversack: sounds like you had a good time. Man, I have not been out for two days as the weather is very cold and rainy! I swim usually every day up until the autumn solstice, but not for a couple of days. June was weirdly hot though.
Avatar 4:59pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

@4:58 zivilars: I love the nature and the quiet, living in the sticks, me.
Avatar 5:00pm zivilars:

@Photocopy: Must be simply beautiful, just googled a few pictures again, I envy you. Sweden, Finland, Iceland – those countries seem to be a dream to live there
Avatar 5:00pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

Thanks a million for these two hours Larry - would you consider doing a three hour show like Julie?
Avatar 5:01pm Brian in UK:

Is that all there is?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:01pm Funky16Corners:

Sadly, yes (until tomorrow)
Avatar 5:01pm zivilars:

hopefully hear you tomorrow, thanks again, Larry!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:02pm Funky16Corners:

@Photocopy - Not currently, as I do a weekly soul show elsewhere, but if that ever ends, three hours would be in the offing
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:02pm Funky16Corners:

Thanks Zivilars!
Avatar 5:03pm WR:

Great music in the show, thank you Larry for curating this afternoon's sounds.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:03pm Funky16Corners:

Thanks WR!
Avatar 5:03pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

Zivilars, like everywhere, there's ups&downs - I did like all the three city states in Germany (you know which ones of course)

OK, stay healthy all, nighty night!
