  6:09pm Jett:

I love the Hollies version of "Sandy" ty for playing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:11pm Therese:

I love the original, but this version doesn't get nearly enough attention.

Yes. I love it too, thx!
Avatar 6:14pm slugluv1313:

YES!!!!!!!! i have always adored The Hollies' version of "Sandy" too! (i think it is on their "Another Night" LP -- which i never had, but borrowed from my local library constantly when i was a teenager in the 70s)
  6:16pm Jett:

I like the first three albums by Springsteen, after that he really begins to lose me, and as time progresses he just gets worse and worse. A rare occasional good track.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:33pm suzyhotrod:

Camelback! Which is still there, sans alpine slide. I was secretly hoping we would have shared both a scarring experience with an easy bake oven, AND injuries on an alpine slide. But alas, we don't have that in common.

True story!
  7:11pm Joe R.:

This is great Therese—only just learned after 28 years of marriage that my wife worked there briefly (and of bunch of her family too it turns out)

(oh, and we just ordered the book too :D)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:12pm Therese:

@Joe R: I may know your wife!
Avatar 7:14pm Franco Twinkie:

Okay, I'm going to get the book, but I have to know - how many times was the park sued?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:15pm Therese:

pfft- your guess is as good as mine, @Franco Twinkie.
Avatar 7:16pm Chud:

I agree, this book is a must-read!
Avatar 7:16pm slugluv1313:

@ Franco -- hah! apparently a LOT of crap going on at a buncha Jersey places -- Haunted Mansion had a ton of allegations of sexual assault on visitors by the workers -- Jungle Habitat too, and the poor creatures who had to "live" there were treated horribly, may died :(
  7:17pm BH:

"There's places that bar right turns on red lights" is a surprise entrant for things to surprise me from this show. (Although I can make some reasonable guesses about why that ban exists)
  7:17pm Joe R.:

@therese - she says she worked there in ‘83 but only for a couple of weeks?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:18pm Therese:

ah, that is before my time. I think it was '88 or '89 when I first worked there.
Avatar 7:20pm Franco Twinkie:

I like that, chasing the leisure dollar.

Cannonball Loop

Cannonball Loop, the infamous looping water slide, was only opened for brief periods in Action Park's existence.
In the mid-1980s GAR built an enclosed water slide, not unusual for that time; in fact, the park already had several such slides. On this one, however, they decided to build a complete vertical loop at the end, similar to that of a roller coaster.[43] The resulting slide, called the "Cannonball Loop", was so intimidating, that employees have reported they were offered $100 (equivalent to $238 in 2019) to test it. Fergus, who described himself as "one of the idiots" who took the offer, said, "$100 did not buy enough booze to drown out that memory."[39]

The slide was opened for only one month in summer 1985 before it was closed at the order of the state's Advisory Board on Carnival Amusement Ride Safety, a highly unusual move at the time.[3] One worker told a local newspaper that "there were too many bloody noses and back injuries" from riders, and it was widely rumored, and reported in Weird NJ, that some of the test dummies sent down before it opened had been dismembered and decapitated.[3] A rider also reportedly got stuck at the top of the loop due to insufficient water pressure, and a hatch had to be installed at the bottom of the slope to allow for future extractions.[3]

The ride supposedly reopened a few more times over the years. In the summers of 1995 and 1996, it was opened for several days before further injuries forced its permanent shutdown.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:22pm Tome:

Never got to ride that one
  7:27pm BH:

Wonder how often the 'Advisory Board on Carnival Amusement Ride Safety' had to meet

Just remembered a much more recent situation around where I live involving the world's tallest/fastest water slide... which ended with it killing a kid (the park shut down shortly after). It's possible lessons still need to be learned for non-dangerous water slides?

Oddly enough, I was visiting my aunt and uncle when I was 13 (lived in FL at the time), and visitied Action Park. It was September, and there were maybe 5 other people there. I got to do the water slide loop, and had a blast w/ my bros.

It wasn't until I moved to NYC 20 years later that I was told about the notoriety of the Action Park.
