Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:03pm Handy Haversack:

Julie! The Ensouled!

Hello! Trying to get ourselves out of town in a couple of hours, but ready to dark the night away with you all until then!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:04pm Julie:

hiya Handy! where ya heading?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:06pm Handy Haversack:

Southern Vermont! Closest place we could find, honestly!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:06pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Jewly Thyme!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:06pm Julie:

ohhh that sounds nice. Hi Rev Rabbit!
Avatar 12:07pm Sylvia (France-NYC):

Hello everyone
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:07pm Andrew Waterloo:

wow.. this isn't Legendary Pink Dots
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:07pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

The voice of DaevidA
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:08pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Point Andrew.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:12pm Julie:

hey there Sylvia!
Avatar 12:15pm Sylvia (France-NYC):

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:15pm Julie:

Avatar 12:16pm Sylvia (France-NYC):

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:18pm Phillippe Bastille:

Howdy
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:18pm Julie:

heya phillippe!
Avatar 12:18pm Sylvia (France-NYC):

oh yeah, that's my stuff! I was born too late to fully enjoy that era sadly
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:19pm Julie:

yeah you don't realize when you're little that music and fashions change. You think when I get big I'll disco too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:21pm Tome:

LOVE a lot of those Disco songs then when it first started ,, 75 76 77,, would not admit it though at the time ,, though !<>!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:22pm Phillippe Bastille:

I was trying to figure out why Julie was on on a Friday afternoon. I think it may be because it's only Thursday
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:23pm Julie:

hahaha
Avatar 12:24pm Sylvia (France-NYC):

@Tome it's never too late. I was like that with Hip Hop music for a long time coz snobism and such.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:27pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Knew even then as a Rawkist small-town kiddo that some Disco was just good Funk & Pop
- & stuff mutated into Techno & Dance even Rave
- that Moroder Tech with sheer DonnaS SEX stands perfectly - Avant even.
  12:28pm Mr Nobody:

Ha. Other than being the 1st I couldn't remember what day of the week yesterday was. It was a Monday, Wednesday and Thursday all rolled into one. It was our first day of being 100% back in the office. I guess at least we have tomorrow off.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:29pm Tome:

when EFD has his dance show too ,, like it !,, esp when you get some people who would NEVER listen to this station and they are HOOKED !<>! well some anyway that's to me alone is good feeling !<>!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:29pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...problem is the Form of Disco became the most Formulaic thing that's ever been for it seemed forever @ the time...

hey everyone! the ascii art above by martinibomb!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:31pm Tome:

... the Raw early 70\'s funk fizzled out with disco pretty much ,, which i LOVED ,, they had to make it sweet ,, like Motown 10 years before that !<>!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:33pm Phillippe Bastille:

@Sylvia I'm with you on that, though I still reserve my snobbery where classic rock is concerned. My son's 22 yr old girlfriend listens to classic rock, and I told her I pretty much abhor it (while I was playing The Clash on the CD player). I had to explain to her about there being older music that is worth listening to because it is good, not just because it was old (looking at you, Mellencamp and Seger). Clash = Good, Dave Mathews Band = Lower GI Distress
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:33pm Handy Haversack:

We're still running the numbers, Phillippe!
Avatar 12:36pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

I usually don't like Bowie's cover versions, but Kingdom Come is one of the better ones - Robert Fripp is to blame.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:36pm Phillippe Bastille:

Hey Handy! Vermont, huh? I'm working on the wife about visitors, but she's still stressed on the Covid thing (she and I are both high risk, but she's even riskier. That's why I married her. Love the risky wimmen)
Avatar 12:39pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

I'm quite para about meeting people, as an at-risk person. I have met a dear friend twice during the last two weeks, but outdoors and maintaining a safe distance.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:41pm Phillippe Bastille:

My bride is okay with extended family, but it's weird to me because they don't have any special immunity that I know of. My SiL is a shopaholic, so I know she's not staying out of the stores...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:44pm Phillippe Bastille:

This Violet Indiana is quite nice
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:44pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Already up here - how about an FMUvian cult compound in Verrmont~NewHampshuh...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:45pm Julie:

Robin Guthrie (from Cocteau Twins)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:45pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Really!
Avatar 12:49pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

@12:07 Andrew Waterloo: I genuinely thought this was the Legendary Pink Dots, until I saw the playlist. I tend to miss all the once-in-a-lifetime events, but I am lucky to have seen Daevid Allen's University Of Errors @ M/S Treue (a ship moored on the Weser river) in 2010.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:49pm Phillippe Bastille:

I had to set up a meeting password and used "WFMU91.1". Must not have had any other listeners on the call because there was no discussion about Mdou Moctar
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:50pm Handy Haversack:

One day, Phillippe, one day!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:51pm Phillippe Bastille:

At a minimum!
Avatar 12:57pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

Safe travels to Southern Vermont Handy, i do miss traveling. The furthest I have been during the last four months is 7 miles from home, and even that was an exception (we went swimming with a friend who drove us there). These four walls have become familiar indeed.
Avatar 1:03pm Sylvia (France-NYC):

traveling... sigh
I haven't seen my boyfriend in 4 months. and counting.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:05pm spodiodi:

that Ummagma was nice
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:06pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Shoegazey goodness.
Avatar 1:06pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

@1:03 Sylvia (France-NYC): three months + a week here. I hate this too. Worst club membership ever.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:07pm Handy Haversack:

Thanks, Cha Cha -- same here. We walked to E. 60th St. in Manhattan a couple of times after taking the ferry over, and that's the most exotic we have been since returning from Jersey City on March 16!

All the nonperishables are in the car ...
Avatar 1:08pm Sylvia (France-NYC):

@Photocopy Cha Cha 2000 like you said
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:11pm spodiodi:

i wish someone would eat my car
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:12pm spodiodi:

hope you have a nice adventure, Handy! (and safe, of course)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:13pm Handy Haversack:

Thanks, spod! I'm one of the perishables, so I'm packing me with care!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:13pm Rich in Washington:

Hi Julie!
Hi everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:14pm Julie:

hiya Rich!
Avatar 1:15pm Hubig Pie:

Roger Waters went to Brian Eno's barber
Avatar 1:16pm Sylvia (France-NYC):

@spodiodi I don't know if they eat them, but you can donate cars to WFMU
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:18pm Julie:

hiya Hubig!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:18pm spodiodi:

thanks, sylvia! it's been on my mind as an option
Avatar 1:20pm Hubig Pie:

And Hello
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:21pm Handy Haversack:

Pretty sure they eat them, Sylvia.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:21pm spodiodi:

hi RIch and Hubig

ooh Mazzy Star
Avatar 1:21pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

While some of the Syd-era BBC tracks were horribly presented on this Early Years comp., that Floyd sounded quite good - I actually do prefer the 12 May 1969 versions of this song, Grantchester Meadows, Cymbaline and The Narrow Way to their studio counterparts.
Avatar 1:21pm βrian:

Bryce personally blends them, actually.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:22pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

doors fans on FMU!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:24pm spodiodi:

it's difficult to let go of the idea that it could be my escape pod, though blending by bryce sounds ever so nice
Avatar 1:25pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

there is nothing wrong with the Doors. I used to think there was, but it was not their fault all the blockheads (like my horrible school-"mates") started to like them due to a certain movie.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:26pm Julie:

the Doors were very popular in school long before that movie came out. it's the resurgence in the 80s that caused the movie
Avatar 1:27pm Hubig Pie:

What movie ?
Apocalypse Now ?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:28pm Julie:

I thought The Doors movie but that's a good point Hubig
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

ApocNow a major bump for them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:30pm spodiodi:

i liked Jim Morrison as Batman, and Real Genius
Avatar 1:30pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

@1:26 Julie: I am from the sticks, northern Finland and I did not know any other 8-year old who liked them. Then around 14, some. When I turned 15, too many - and this was the Oliver Stone one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:31pm Julie:

I always thought Jason Patrick should've played Jim
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:31pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Duane Allman?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:32pm Phillippe Bastille:

Hey spodiodi!
Avatar 1:32pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

Before Apocalypse Now it was not uncommon for folks like Throbbing Gristle and other non-mainstream folks liking them. Some 30 years later, liking them seemed almost like a guilty pleasure for some.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:33pm spodiodi:

hi Phillippe!
Avatar 1:33pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

you know how to pick these songs Julie!

I

LOVE

THIS.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:34pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I think this Iggy feller might be familiar with the doors.
Avatar 1:34pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

Ian Curtis certainly was familiar with both the Doors - and unfortunately this Idiot album.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:35pm Julie:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:41pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Christopher Lee
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:42pm listener james from westwood:

As a wee lad, post–Star Wars in the later '70s, I used to sing the bridge to this as:

Darth Va-der

Darth Va-der
Flies a custom TIE fighter
Darth Va-der
Darth Va-der!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:43pm spodiodi:

bahaha thank you for sharing, james from westwood. i love that
Avatar 1:43pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

According to his wife's book, his turntable was still spinning Idiot (probably a faulty one like mine...) a few days mr. Curtis had been taken away. Speaking of which, while I tend to dislike rock biopics, Sam Riley and Samantha Morton offer the viewer some excellent performances in Corbijn's Control. Has been a while I have seen it though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:43pm Julie:

haha nice, James
Avatar 1:44pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

I have Band on the Run and McCartney II - do I need more?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:44pm Julie:

I like Control, saw it in the theatre
  1:45pm Mark R:

Iggy said one of his favorite concerts was seeing the Doors at the University of Michigan when "Light My Fire" had just come out, and all these frat bros showed up hoping to hear it, and instead, Jim Morrison came out singing in this Betty Boop voice, mocking them, and the concert was "over" after about a half an hour. Then, after all the morons had cleared out leaving only the freaks, the band came back out and played their regular set.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:46pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Eff yeah.
Avatar 1:46pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

yes, back to the egg is from 1979?
Avatar 1:47pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

@1:45 Mark R: this is why I love the Doors/Morrison.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:49pm listener james from westwood:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:51pm Andrew Waterloo:

@Mark R.. new respect for Jim Morrison

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:55pm Julie:

yep yep there's only so much you can do.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:56pm spodiodi:

Mark R, great story -- reminds me of when i saw smashing pumpkins, and they did something similar. i was delighted
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:56pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Afraid of how harrowing Control might be - but I've seen the scene she discovers his demise anyhow...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:57pm Julie:

oh hey Mark! just missed ya there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:57pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...yerknow - big spoiler....
Avatar 1:57pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

that Supremes lp (OK, DIANA ROSS and the Supremes) has cool cover art - a pity I have none of their albums. Only a 2cd hits comp, bought back in the day when those things actually were expensive. I might be wrong but I have always thought their albums have their share of filler. Should put my prejudice to rest?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:59pm Julie:

I don't know, I never dug the girl group stuff very much but I'm checking out their later stuff and it's kind neat
Avatar 1:59pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

@1:56 Revolution Rabbit Nov63: quite a brave move the actors performed the songs instead of miming. I also liked the book his late wife wrote.
Avatar 2:00pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

late wife - I meant widow.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:00pm Handy Haversack:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:11pm Andrew Waterloo:

I remember their album Double Figure and how the second disc wouldn't play for me because they re-indexed the first track
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:13pm Phillippe Bastille:

I wasn't near the keyboard to comment when I heard it, but that Agnetha Fältskog tickled my fancy a bit.
Avatar 2:14pm northguineahills:

(it was a spaceballs joke)
  2:15pm Mark R:

Photo I'm not the biggest McCartney solo fan, but I absolutely loved his MTV Unplugged album. Seems to be only available as an MP3 now, unless you want to pay some outrageous price for it.

i figured, but couldn't remember nor find it before asking (i feel like a Major A*hole)

@2:15 Mark R: I'm not the biggest McCartney solo fan either, even those two albums I have - band on the run and McCartney II - I find hard to get the point of.
I do have some pleasant childhood memories of No More Lonely Nights, even in Finland you'd see the video from TV (wow, all of TWO channels then!) quite often.
@2:09 northguineahills: dunno anything about Plaid except Not for Threes is a mighty fine album.

Julie don't get mad at me, but your pronunciation of Fältskog was rather cute, almost Danish ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:25pm Julie:

haha yeah I had no idea
Avatar 2:28pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

I guess it'd be pronounced like Feltskoog. Then again, this is from a finnish perspective, Swedish pronciation of their mother tongue is quite different. My swedish is exceptionally bad, should be better as it is our second official language.
Avatar 2:30pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

I'm no Queen fan, but in spite or because of that I find Paul Rodgers taking over Freddie Mercury's duties very weird.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:31pm Julie:

it can't be worse than the American Idol guy
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:32pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Queen were quite a band - but sold out to the U.S.megamarket & became irrelevant to my snobbery...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:35pm Stanley:

I wish I had gleaming teeth like Olivia.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:35pm Julie:

they're something aren't they?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:36pm Julie:

I remember my mom saying she couldn't be English because of those teeth. (it was the Australian upbringing I guess!)
Avatar 2:36pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

btw, speaking of Plaid, I noticed you have played their Warp labelmates Broadcast sometimes here - did you Julie or anyone ever see them live? I am a latecomer to that party - plenty of chances to have seen them live but back then I ignored them completely.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:37pm Julie:

I didn't. I was late to the Broadcast party.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:38pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

My hero Hitchcock.
  2:39pm Marie:

Hello Julie and All! Just tuned in--loving it. Tx. Julie.
  2:39pm Marie:

I love Robyn Hitchcock!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:39pm Julie:

hiya Marie!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:40pm Stanley:

Your mum was correct, Julie.
We never really got into putting flouride in the water like they did in Australia.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:41pm Phillippe Bastille:

I was supposed to see Robyn in a small club back a bit.
Avatar 2:41pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

@2:37 Julie: well sometimes I think I am living in some alternate reality, as I knew nothing about Broadcast, even though i have listened to them for a few years - perfect summer music. And only recently, a week ago or so the first thing I learned about them was hearing about the unfortunate death of Trish Keenan in January 2011.

Hi Julie!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:42pm Julie:

Here for a bit, but too busy in the office to post. (Love this Kate Bush!).
Hi, and Bye!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:44pm Julie:

I'd heard them on FMU of course but yeah I got more into them after that. Hiya Dr Jazz!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:44pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Irwin had a couple deep dives on Broadcast.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:44pm Julie:

I bet!
Avatar 2:44pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

Love this cover!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:48pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Robyn Hitchcock has been doing lotsa online performances - which I haven't caught. If you've never seen him - his between song banter is a performance in itself.
Avatar 2:48pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

@2:44 Revolution Rabbit Nov63: hey thanks for reminding me - I recently read he did a show on them around her birthday. or something. I am having a Broadcast psychosis, and I am kicking myself for ignoring them all those years. AND GUESS WHY. I thought it was a stupid name - as there was a Finnish AOR band of the same name in early 80s. Don't ask me how I am this dumb. I just am.
  2:48pm Mr Nobody:

How did I miss STG covering Major Tom? I like.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:49pm Julie:

yes every week!
Avatar 2:50pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

@2:48 Revolution Rabbit Nov63: me neither - I dare not buy online tickets as there is no guarantee it'd work on my browsers/OS's. But yes, what I remember from the only gig I saw from him, the between song banter is indeed a performance in itself.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:50pm Ike:

Cool.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:51pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Yeah cover both cute & effective.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:51pm Michael 98145:

Thank you again, Julie. I think the discovery of the week for me might be those Ousel folks.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:52pm Ike:

What platform is Robyn Hitchcock on? Instagrimes? Farcebook? I think Low has been doing live shows on Fri. afternoons on Instaslum, but I keep missing them.
