Hi, StringOFperils!
Avatar 7:15pm StringOFperils:

I too found myself in a strangely empty Danceteria for a moment
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:16pm Gary:

I should probably not make upcoming shows visible until the current show is over
Avatar 7:17pm StringOFperils:

It's okay Gary, it's easier to organize it all at once. We just have to do our part, i.e. reading.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:17pm Ike:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:22pm Gary:

And appropriately retro! Hi, RHawk!
Avatar 7:23pm tim abdellah:

@SOP - that's a Moroccan guinbri [aka gimbri, gmbri, gnibra, gombri, gumbri, gunbri, gunibri], aka hajhuj or sintir. Played primarily in Gnawa music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:23pm Gary:

Several of the tracks played tonight come from Nate Hun's collection. Nate compiled the music for John Pirozzi's Don't Think I've Forgotten. Read more about Nate here: aaww.org...

I think one of the first times I happened on your show you were playing Cambodian music, maybe 3 or 4 or more years ago, listening via iTunes
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:27pm Gary:

I do like a bit of Khmer
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:33pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Gary - you amaze...
Avatar 7:34pm StringOFperils:

@tim: Thanks! I didn't recognize it, photographed that way. I know it as the sintir, mainly through Hassan Hakmoun with his band Zahar. My intro to Gnawa.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:34pm melinda:

I enjoyed that documentary.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:37pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Aint it so.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:48pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

One FMUvian sampled some noise I posted to fb & fit it to his track!! But I expect they wouldn't approve on the town green...
Avatar 7:49pm tim abdellah:

@SOP - yeah, it's an unusual photo angle. I loved the Zahar band - excellent Gnawa rock.!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:51pm Gary:

FYI, they are making a graphic novel about Ros Serey Sothea: www.phnompenhpost.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:52pm chresti:

I am biting into a spicy olive pie Franco brought back from the Syrian bakery, listening to Cambodian tracks at Gary's Bodega, such a perfect combination!
Avatar 7:52pm LambdaCalculus:

Oh wow, that's awesome!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:53pm melinda:

@chresti yum! I just finished a mediocre dinner, which means the next phase is chocolate. Or figs.
Avatar 7:53pm Franco Twinkie:

And I am drinking Polish beer I got at the Armenian market!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:54pm Gary:

Franco! I was very curious about where you'd picked that beer up
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:55pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...um...I could sprinkle curry in my cocoa...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:56pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Why is CamboRawk so GOOD??
...& then genocide.
Avatar 7:57pm LambdaCalculus:

I'm most definitely getting that graphic novel about Ros Sereysothea when it comes out!
Avatar 7:57pm Franco Twinkie:

It's called Zywiec, and it has happy, and I'll assume drunk people dancing on the label.
Avatar 7:58pm StringOFperils:

@Franco: I'll underwrite that product; it's great beer!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:58pm chresti:

I have this Cyclo on a compilation I have.
Avatar 7:59pm Franco Twinkie:

It is, SoP!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:59pm chresti:

Sounds different, this is like an EXTENDED VERSION!
Avatar 7:59pm LambdaCalculus:

Zywiec is a great beer!
Avatar 8:00pm tim abdellah:

I am loving the little cymbals in this track.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:00pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I get impression Dancing was a major component to this Genre - wherever it went otherwise...
Avatar 8:02pm Franco Twinkie:

Everybody seems to know Zywiec. I guess you guys live closer to Poland than me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:02pm chresti:

Mine's on cd, not the greatest sounding quality.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:03pm chresti:

Haha Franco.
Avatar 8:04pm WR:

Gary, Zywiec is available in Queens. I get it sometimes from Foodtown. They stock a variety from that brewery, lagers, porter, and malt liquor. Reasonably priced.
Avatar 8:04pm StringOFperils:

@Franco: It must be exported a lot, to wherever a lot of folks emigrated. I'm in Toronto...which is closer to Poland than the west coast I guess. Ha ha.
Avatar 8:05pm TDK60:

Hello.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:07pm Gary:

TDK60! ... and, yes, WR, I can get it at the Turkish market a few blocks from here
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:08pm chresti:

Happy Weenzy TDK60.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:09pm Gary:

This is my favorite Sinn Sisamouth track and it pains me so much that I cannot find a better-sounding version of it
Avatar 8:09pm StringOFperils:

Hi TDK60
Avatar 8:10pm Franco Twinkie:

Our neighbors across the street are from Cambodia. They escaped into Thailand a week before the Khmer Rouge rolled on their town and killed every one left behind.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:10pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Gawd.
Avatar 8:10pm StringOFperils:

Lucky.
Avatar 8:11pm tim abdellah:

Whoa!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:11pm Gary:

Jesus!
Avatar 8:11pm Franco Twinkie:

When we talk about it, they are real matter of fact.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:12pm Gary:

The woman I bought a lot of my Cambodian, Thai, and Lao CDs from in Portland also escaped to Thailand, although I don't know that it was quite that close
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:14pm chresti:

They are very sweet and always have a German Shepard named Mei Mei. Since we've lived here they've had 2.
Avatar 8:14pm Franco Twinkie:

It sounds like our neighbors escaped with their underwear in their hands.
Avatar 8:15pm Franco Twinkie:

They give me gauvas in the fall and I make jam.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:18pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Thai family my block sells food @ farmer's market. Just the best vibes going.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:19pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

& everyone's uptight about immigrants. The world is upside down to me.
Avatar 8:19pm Franco Twinkie:

I've seen Dengue Fever play twice. Once in the middle of the street in Pasadena, and once at the park with Chicano Batman. That was amazing!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:20pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

!
Avatar 8:23pm Franco Twinkie:

RR, right now America really gives me the creeps. I feel very lucky to live in a place that's all immigrant. If just for the food, for fucks sake!
  8:24pm ParUbi ¤¤¤¤:

Hey everyone, hi Gary
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:25pm Gary:

ParUbi!
Avatar 8:26pm TDK60:

Franco, I saw Chicano Batman a few years ago.
Avatar 8:26pm Franco Twinkie:

where?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:27pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

You have to stop & resist what's been Normalized.
Avatar 8:28pm TDK60:

..in this great country of ours, Franco. (ha)-- in Central Park, part of a Latin rock fest.
Avatar 8:30pm Franco Twinkie:

TDK, us city dweller have to stick together!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:34pm chresti:

Sometimes it does seem like it's devolving out there.
Avatar 8:37pm Franco Twinkie:

When I was in Hanoi I met these two Canadians guys who had smuggled in all this weed from Cambodia. One afternoon I went to visit one of them, and we sat in his room overlooking a public market and got really blasted, then went walking around in the street. What fun!
Avatar 8:43pm TDK60:

that last Jerk track was groovy.
Avatar 8:46pm Franco Twinkie:

This is like Chicano Batman!
Avatar 8:46pm StringOFperils:

This is how I'm celebrating Canada Day. Toronto's very multi-cultural, with people from everywhere, so this seems appropriate. The Canadian accent, incidentally, is as much a mythical stereotype as a uniform American accent, as anyone in the 5 boroughs, for instance, knows. My own accent is pretty much precisely yours, Gary. I was working briefly with some folks at the Chicago Tribune years ago, and they were giving me the 'oot and abooot' thing, and I had to politely oblige the fact that they were in fact serious.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:47pm Gary:

[smacks forehead] Sorry about that, SOP.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:50pm coelacanth∅:

greetings Gary and all
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:50pm Gary:

Ceolacanth!
Avatar 8:51pm StringOFperils:

Heh. No need to apologize at all Gary. That's why travel, even if only this way. It's enriching and it serves to dissolve those apparently illusory barriers and divisions. I expect the world to get more like this as we go forward, with everyone from everywhere...well, everywhere. Which should be a good thing.
Avatar 8:51pm TDK60:

String: bad joke: How do you spell Canada? C.eh?N.eh?D.eh?
Avatar 8:51pm Franco Twinkie:

Cuel, I'm just about ready to go look for my new dog infatuation.
Avatar 8:52pm StringOFperils:

Ha ha ha ha. Take off, eh.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:53pm Gary:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:56pm melinda:

@StringOFperils how do you pronounce 'been'?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:58pm coelacanth∅:

Franco tell him he has a secret admirer
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:59pm chresti:

Haha coel.
Avatar 8:59pm StringOFperils:

I say 'bean'. Although, that may not be helpful, because I have no idea how you pronounce 'bean'. People just south of me, in Buffalo, have a surprising variant of English, and it's so close. Hard to compare if we can't actually speak to one another in person.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:01pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

bin bean
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:02pm melinda:

@StringOFperils interesting about Buffalo. Americans say 'ben' or 'bin' rather than 'bean'.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:02pm chresti:

Bean rhymes with seen.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:03pm chresti:

I say ben
Avatar 9:03pm WR:

International Drummer Discotheque Day. IDDD.
Avatar 9:05pm TDK60:

Some great rockin' cuts tonight Gary.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:05pm Gary:

Aha, thank you, WR
Avatar 9:06pm StringOFperils:

@melinda: Yeah, I've heard that a lot...bin for been. The language varies so much wherever you go...from Seattle to NOLA, Appalachia to Newark to Memphis to Atlanta....the Johns Islands off of the Carolinas have a really old form of English, an actual dialect...Canada's like that too...
Avatar 9:08pm StringOFperils:

Newfoundland...crazy English
Avatar 9:08pm TDK60:

String, I met some far east coasters (Nova Scotia, Newf.) who sounded /faintly/ British Isles.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:08pm Gary:

Ros hits Lata heights there
Avatar 9:08pm StringOFperils:

@tDK60....yes, they're out there on there on, half way to Ireland
  9:09pm Dean:

Allow me to interject a contrary opinion or two re: cultural linguistic stereotypes. In fact, all Americans do talk alike. We swallow our Rs, and while I don't sound like my friends from the Midwest or the South, you would know in an instant that I'm from the USA as soon as I utter a sentence.

Second, if stereotypes about accent are bullshit, then so are "travel dissolves barriers" platitudes. It does not. It's mostly well-off people pretending they're exercising their empathy or expanding their horizons or keeping an open mind. It's students who have graduated from college feeling obligated to "see the world," when the world is right out their front door.

Travel is costly, effortful, harmful (carbon footprint?), deceptive work. We need to stop travelling and start reading.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Have heard that regional dialects are *not* decreasing with mobility & new media but I wonder. Think the language is mutating online...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10pm melinda:

I asked about 'been' because that's one of the few features I've noticed consistently in Canadian accents that you don't hear in the States.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11pm Gary:

Dean! No! I am going to Cairo at the first available opportunity. But, generally speaking, I don't entirely disagree.
  9:11pm zzzm:

late tuning in, missed good part
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12pm Gary:

zzzm! It's all good, like the kids say
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14pm melinda:

@Gary and I haven't yet visited Istanbul. I do think about the emissions of international air travel though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14pm chresti:

Haven't traveled beyond the SF Bay Area in about 20 years.

I mostly armchair/computer travel.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15pm Gary:

I think about that, too. But I only travel internationally once every two or three years, on average, maybe less. And I can't not see Cairo before I die.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16pm chresti:

Maybe sail across the ocean to get there?
Avatar 9:16pm TDK60:

  9:18pm Dean:

When I next travel not for work--and thank our lord in heaven for the pandemic for my having to miss two trips this year--it will be to one of a couple locations where I've never been, Cyprus or Nova Scotia. And it will be on a one-way ticket.
Avatar 9:18pm LambdaCalculus:

I need to travel through the world, but looks like until we completely delouse the government, that ain't happening.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18pm melinda:

@Gary yeah, I've only flown internationally once to Europe in the 90s (twice, technically, to get there and back). I still want to go back since I have a cousin in Germany.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19pm Gary:

Retirement abroad -- now we're talking!
  9:20pm Dean:

I ain't never gonna retire. I'm going to get the hell out of Ameruckuh.
Avatar 9:20pm StringOFperils:

I will have to respectfully disagree with you re. the language uniformity notion Dean. It's likely that I will know in a short time that you're American, and also where in America you're from. The modes of common speech are demonstrably diverse. By stereotypes, I refer to an odd insistence, for example, that Canadians speak as Scots, or conversely that Americans speak like hillbilly crackers. And narrow-eyed cynicism about the mere possibility of feeling genuine kinship with people we don't initially recognize leads to things like Red states and Blue states wanting to murder each other. It's unproductive. It ends in death camps. I do see your very valid point about recreational travel, however.

Avatar 9:22pm Mayuko:

Good evening, Gary and all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22pm Gary:

Speaking of accents, one of my favorite YouTube meme-y things are those videos of people who don't speak certain languages trying to sound like they are speaking them. The ones where folks try to do English are amazing. You hear yourself in a convex mirror
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22pm chresti:

Hi Mayuko!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23pm Gary:

Mayuko! America misses you!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29pm melinda:

@Gary I like that kind of thing too. A friend of my mom's who lived in Germany for a while many years ago said of German attempts to do fake English "they always remember 'Harry'."

Avatar 9:31pm Mayuko:

@StringOFperils Thank you for asking :) Still not sure. My internet is pretty slow, which is one of the things that I need to do something about.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31pm Gary:

Can you get FIOS there, Mayuko? I just got it, and it's amazing
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34pm chresti:

I don't think I know anyone that says been like bean, Although I've heard it on TV and film.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35pm melinda:

@zzzm yes
Avatar 9:36pm tim abdellah:

That cowbell!
  9:37pm Dean:

Of course, SOFp. There are stereotypes and stereotypes.

But what do you mean when you say some folks "don't initially recognize" people? "Recognize"?

I suspect the Red/Blue divide is choreographed by our fearless leaders, whom I loathe. People generally are prejudiced, even hateful and territorial, and yet we don't want to be perceived as such. We have Red and Blue divisiveness not because ordinary jerk-offs like me don't recognize ordinary jerk-offs from some other territory. We have it because, in our case, American (more or less by now global) leadership thrives on assuring us we won't be harmed by *them.*
Avatar 9:37pm StringOFperils:

Some people here say 'bin' also, as rapid speech is elided. Nobody but out-ot-towners say Toe-Ron-Toe, for Toronto either. It's generally something more like Tahrahnah. Go figure.
Avatar 9:40pm TDK60:

String, I did meet a fella from Vancouver Island who said oot for out. He also sang sea shanties.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45pm melinda:

@String yeah, my sister used to have a friend from Toronto who tipped her off to the local pronunciation.
Avatar 9:46pm StringOFperils:

Dean. please, I'm merely talking about the sounds of language. I have no intention of engaging your obviously heated polemic. Times are very hard right now. Tempers are hot, and fear, desperation, and frustration are rampant. Wariness is becoming indistinguishable from paranoia. Hate and suspicion are being ramped up. If you want troll the crap out of me to blow off some steam...well, I don't know what to say. And Gary, I am very sorry that the tone in the chat on your show has gone down this hole. The best thing I can do for the sake of your show at this moment is to disappear. It's going to be a very long summer. I'm not a jerk-off. Not nearly. Have a good evening everyone. See you soon Dean. thanks a lot for the great show, Gary. Take care.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47pm melinda:

@String I know you're not a jerkoff
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48pm Gary:

No apologies necessary, stick around, we're all bozos on this bus!
Avatar 9:55pm TDK60:

Thanks Gary, fab tunes tonight.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55pm melinda:

Superstar is such a great song.
  9:55pm Dean:

I did not in any way suggest that SOFp is a jerk-off, and I would never do so, because I don't for a moment imagine that SOFp, whose contributions to the comment boards I always enjoy, is one. Nor did I first invoke Red and Blue America, the divide of American desperation, frustration, hate, and suspicion. Please, folks. read. Just read.
