Ear, ear, @WR! Happy travels.

Hello, mister @hyde!
Avatar 9:02am Listener Gregory:

Morning to all for whom it is morning.

Is it Sunday? I’ve lost track.

Morning, Jeff and all! Happy socially distanced Pride weekend!

To quote 'A Hard Day's Night' - we're OUT !
...Oh man - yer up against Gary Sullivan now. What is this? :)
Avatar 9:05am TDK60:

Morning Jeff. That is a problem RevRab. Maybe I'll jump back and forth, if that is seen as polite WFMU etiquette.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:07am Dave in Vermont:

Is it a coincidence that Tapscott was playing on the stream right when you switched over?
Avatar 9:08am duke:

Problems like D:O vs Gary are why God made archives. Or was it Ken, I get them mixed up.

Btw, there's no truth to the rumor that Gary and I now have major beef, will not speak to one another directly, and require Doug to mediate all conversations.

Since no one asked, I will volunteer that a Taylor Ho Bynum album "The Ambiguity Manifesto" is one of the best I have acquired recently. Nine-tette, with excellent use of Mary Halvorsen.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38am Jeff Golick:

I can +1 @LG's recommendation.
  9:40am DJpeterDE:

Avatar 9:41am Listener Gregory:

We only need +18 more to reach our goal, people!
Avatar 9:42am StringOFperils:

I adhere to a manifesto of ambiguity, if that counts.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42am listener james from westwood:

Thank you, TDK60 and Rev!!
Avatar 9:42am StringOFperils:

Incidentally, this is sounding incredible.
Avatar 9:43am Listener Gregory:

@String, that could go either way.
Avatar 9:43am StringOFperils:

An by that I mean fantastic, and by fantastic I mean.....does anything mean anything originally intended anymore?
Avatar 9:44am StringOFperils:

See?!!! Ambiguity.
Avatar 9:44am Listener Gregory:

@String, not according to your manifesto, no.
Avatar 9:45am Linda Lee:

good morning! hi Jeff!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47am Jeff Golick:

Hello and welcome, @Linda Lee!
  9:48am DJpeterDE:

I saw this line-up in Philly in the before-times. Really fun. Only time I ever saw Dixon
Avatar 9:48am Listener Gregory:

Perhaps predictable that the Bureau of Atomic Tourism would lead to the Exploding Star Orchestra. If you take atomic risks, things happen.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50am Jeff Golick:

Very cool, @DJpeterDE!

I mean, it's science, @LG.
  9:50am DJpeterDE:

Speaking of the before times, we found a forgotten bowl of Halloween candy last night. I just stared at it. Remember when strangers would come to your house and you would breathe on them while other strangers lined up behind them, and they’d yell a happy traditional greeting to you?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51am Jeff Golick:

The craziest part of that, @DJpeterDE, is that somehow Halloween candy would be "forgotten?"
Avatar 9:52am GlossoNihil:

Vintage Hallowe'en candy last a long time, even after you start eating it.
Avatar 9:54am holland oats:

nobody check twitter
Avatar 9:55am GlossoNihil:

Avatar 10:00am Sem:

Lurking and listening. Good moring, Jeff the G, D:O-ers, jazz folk, newly-arrived listeners on the GTD stream, all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am Jeff Golick:

I was looking at Twitter earlier this morning and found myself spiraling down a very strange series of conspiracy views and really nutso beliefs. It was...unsettling.
Avatar 10:01am hyde:

That's the worst
Avatar 10:01am GlossoNihil:

And this is different from any other day....how?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02am Jeff Golick:

I guess I usually stay in my own lane/bubble.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02am Jeff Golick:

Good morning to you, @Sem! How's the weather up there?
Avatar 10:03am Sem:

Three weeks of dry supposedly ending today with a minor, minor tinkle of rain. *the home gardener blues*
Avatar 10:04am TDK60:

We had a five minute downpour last night in NYC. We need more rain.
  10:05am DJpeterDE:

@jeff yes the forgetting of the candy is also inexplicable. Probably got moved somewhere we would intentionally remember it, and then forgot
Avatar 10:05am hyde:

Almost in drought here too
  10:08am DJpeterDE:

Andrew D’Angelo! Ran the jazz dept at Tower Records in Boston in the 1980s. Turned me on to a lot of music!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15am Jeff Golick:

Hey there, @doctorjazz!

I spend a lot of time (and not so much money) at Tower Recrods in the late 1980s, but not in the jazz department.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am Jeff Golick:

Here's that Coursil mini-bio I mentioned: www.sunnysiderecords.com...
Avatar 10:17am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

@DJpeter: Yes - bit on Halloween they were already wearing masks...
Avatar 10:17am Linda Lee:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18am doctorjazz:

Used to live in Tower Records and J and R Records downtown when I got interested in jazz.
Avatar 10:19am Linda Lee:

J & R on Park Row! absolutely! :-)
Avatar 10:19am holland oats:

i worked at nyc tower too!
Avatar 10:19am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Hullo fred! People ask after you!
...WiFis I steal @ home just came back on - no rhyme or reason I know...
Avatar 10:20am holland oats:

the theft at that place was unreal
Avatar 10:20am Linda Lee:

pre-surveillance lawlessness!
Avatar 10:21am Listener Gregory:

@holland oats, I was dumb enough to pay.
Talk of all these record stores is depressing me. It's like listing all our favorite musicians who died in the past decade and will never hear again.
Avatar 10:21am Linda Lee:

eventually we'll be mad with nostalgia. ;-)
Avatar 10:22am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Seriously we're trying to be casual about this thing - but my favorite local diner ain't coming' back - the shutterings have begun...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22am Jeff Golick:

The NYC Tower, we talking the one on E 4th Street? When I recently watched the doc on Other Music, around the corner from that Tower, I nearly got weepy with nostalgia.
Avatar 10:23am holland oats:

pioneers were left on the cutting room floor jeff!
  10:23am DJpeterDE:

I lived in Somerville ‘88-‘90, made a pittance and spent it all at Tower and cheap concerts at Berkeley and NEC.
  10:24am DJpeterDE:

Berklee! Stupid auto correct
Avatar 10:24am Listener Gregory:

I moved from the midwest to NYC in 2001, and I seriously wonder whether I decided to do so because Tower and Other Music were one block from my office.
Avatar 10:24am holland oats:

somerville me too! not sure year, 87 prob. worked at steve's ice cream
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25am Jeff Golick:

Oh no, @holland oats! Missed that, and honestly saw almost zero in-stores at OM.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27am Jeff Golick:

Anyone want to guess who's playing the contrabass clarinet here?
Avatar 10:28am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Worked in stupid CD stores in Santa Barbara trying to pay crazy rent there. All the CDs I bought & sold that now I would just rip...
Avatar 10:29am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...but then that could be a full-time job...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29am Jeff Golick:

When I was unemployed a few years back, one of my plans was to open a local record store. My family quickly talked me out of it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29am Doug Schulkind:

At the Tower outlet across the street from Other Music, I purchase 2-3,000 budget LPs. Sometimes left with wheelbarrowsful (almost literally) of remaindered Folkways titles at first $2, then $1, then 50¢, then 25¢ apiece. My vision of heaven.
Avatar 10:30am holland oats:

i loved working there, even at $6 an hour
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32am WR:

RevRabNov63, sorry to hear that. Our fave Thai place reopened last week to our surprise & joy. They had been totally closed since early March. Restaurant biz is rough any time with surprisingly high rate of failure or short lives. But when one that has been there for years goes, it is a loss.
Avatar 10:32am Listener Gregory:

No idea about the clarinet. I would guess Roscoe Mitchell or Braxton, just because they also recorded for Actuel at the time (I think).
Avatar 10:33am holland oats:

forcing patrons to listen to 'slanted and enchanted'...
  10:34am DJpeterDE:

Other Music!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36am Jeff Golick:

@WR! Welcome back.

@LG: you are correct - Braxton.

@holland oats: the listening to my music all day was the main attraction to the record store idea.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40am Jeff Golick:

"Saving up to buy a record" is not a phenomenon with which my two teen children are familiar.
Avatar 10:43am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Avatar 10:44am Listener Gregory:

It says here that Coursil has doctorates in both Math and Linguistics!
Avatar 10:44am holland oats:

speaking of selling - sold the coursil actuel at the last record fair to the guy who runs good records in the east village
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52am doctorjazz:

My girls mostly hear music on Spotify (though my younger daughter has a few CDs by favorite artists), seems silly for then to collect, when most of what they want is easily available.
Avatar 10:53am Listener Gregory:

@doctorj, the first hits are always free.
  10:53am DJpeterDE:

I have never been able to make the trip to the WFMU record fair but maybe when this is all over we can have a D:O meetup... sigh...
  10:55am DJpeterDE:

Spotify still hasn’t made any money. Much less paid artists any money. I’m agin it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56am Jeff Golick:

I would like that! A record fair sounds like the height of splendid decadence right now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56am Uncle Michael:

Poured rain again this morning, so once again I dodged the yard work bullet. I got breakfast cleaned up, pressure-cooked some chicken thighs, got a roux into the oven, and prepped everything else for the gumbo and cleaned the kitchen. Assembling the gumbo will flow like a cooking show. It's been a good destination:IN morning with destination:OUT.
Avatar 10:56am holland oats:

i've never used spotify in my life - and yes to d:o meetup!
  10:57am hyde:

I generally prefer owning things to licensing them
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57am Doug Schulkind:

Avatar 10:58am StringOFperils:

You seem like quite the gourmand, UM. Have you ever cooked professionally? Just curious.
Avatar 10:58am hyde:

@Doug would read!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59am Uncle Michael:

No, SOP...my mother did. I come by my love for it honestly.
Avatar 10:59am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Often ponder that the Media is the Massage - & what that means now. For me - it's Streams - primarily FMU obviously - & Podcasts. The latter better for being out w/ no WiFis. (My we access is variable.) & these are like gushing firehoses of content.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59am Jeff Golick:

@UM, good lord you are productive. I was thinking of listening to Stork and then taking a nap later.
Avatar 11:00am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

*my WiFi access

Avatar 11:00am Listener Gregory:

I remember when people said, "You can stream any movie on Netflix." Now it's Netflix + Disney + Amazon + on-demand + various boutique channels. The cost goes up and some things disappear from availability. If you don't own something, you're at the mercy of the marketplace, which doesn't always feel it has a responsibility to make its products available.
Avatar 11:00am Linda Lee:

the medium sure is the message & the way the media landscape looks, mirrors the shape of the collective mind. brrrrr!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01am Uncle Michael:

Jeff, I go to bed at 9:00 PM. It helps with the mornings.
Avatar 11:02am hyde:

@LG yep. also Netflix really doesn't have that many movies
Avatar 11:02am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

When I could afford - when I had ANY money - it went to the Internet Provider. & who do they pay for content? But this isn't Techtonic...
Avatar 11:02am Listener Gregory:

Oh, forgot the CBS, NBC, Hulu channels... each with its own charge. I wonder when music is going to go the same way, and "everything is on Spotify" is something old people say.
Avatar 11:02am Linda Lee:

not a great thing to have it centralize, is it..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03am Jeff Golick:

Don't forget HBO max. Whatever that is.
Avatar 11:03am holland oats:

film struck was briefly the greatest thing ever. criterion channel will have to do.
Avatar 11:06am hyde:

there's also Shudder if you like horror movies. and Crunchyroll if you like anime. I'm sure there's a Bollywood site too....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06am doctorjazz:

Just read a bit about Coursil...interesting fellow!

A record fair would be great (did go to the FMU ones). I understand Downtown Music Gallery is reopening, in a Socially Distanced manner, of course.

Avatar 11:11am Listener Gregory:

I think this Tzadik recording was Coursil's comeback album after a long time out of music. I like this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12am WR:

Listening to these Jacques Coursil selections has been relevatory. Have the Actuel and him on some 60s / 70s sessions but had not picked up on his work of the last two decades.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15am Doug Schulkind:

It's the breathy-ness, maybe, Jeff? Saxophones echo/amplify the human singing voice. But trumpets amplify the human breathing voice. Could that be it?
Avatar 11:16am Linda Lee:

yeah! the language we know before we know words. the language of tone & breath.
Avatar 11:18am Linda Lee:

that's rhythm. breath is nothing but rhythm.
Avatar 11:19am Linda Lee:

Jeff, i didn't know Coursil at all before i tuned in today. many thanks!
Avatar 11:20am TDK60:

Yes, never heard of Coursil.
Avatar 11:20am Linda Lee:

so nice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20am doctorjazz:

I prefer owning this stuff as well (which would be pretty clear when you walk in my door), but between work, family. FMU listening, and sleep, the "On Deck" pile just gets bigger. Earlier in this page, there was a recommendation for Taylor Go Bynum's The Ambiguity Manifesto.. I did what I often do, searched it on Bandcamp, where I was told "you own this". I went through the pile, and, sure enough, the unopened LP is there (which I have to check out). Sheesh,...
Avatar 11:22am hyde:

@doc haha, classic. i know the feeling.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22am doctorjazz:

That article (linked from the latest DMG email)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25am Jeff Golick:

Breathiness, yes, I think so! So glad you were here to hear Coursil, @Linda Lee & @WR & all. I'm honestly happy for the chance to listen along.
Avatar 11:25am Listener Gregory:

Is Berne back on baritone after a decade's break?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26am doctorjazz:

Must be, LG! (This sounds GREAT!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27am Jeff Golick:

Yes, @LG!
Avatar 11:29am Listener Gregory:

From the record listing: "don’t miss the added bonus of Tim’s now extinct Baritone." Apparently most of the record is from 2010. So, sadly, the baritone has not been resurrected.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30am Jeff Golick:

I didn't know how to take that note, @LG, but I guess you are correct.
Avatar 11:34am stork:

Thanks Jeff much for assembling the tribute to Coursil today. His sense of language alongside the real in sound resonates with deep truth. Concrete and grounded realizations. I'll know that I will be sharing this set with folks once the archive is up.
