Musical theater from off the beaten path. Obscure and unusual show tunes from within the canon and without, flops, failures, and the newest works from up-and-coming artists—plus tried-and-true hits. Also, occasional appearances from songs that are not show tunes (but only if they go really well with show tunes).

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:04pm Webhamster Henry:

Hi Bronwyn! I have the scratchy old recording of this somewhere.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:04pm Bronwyn Bishop:

from 1945?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:05pm Sweet Corn Lizzie:

My parents had a friend name June who was very pregnant just when this song was popular!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:07pm Webhamster Henry:

That June is suspiciously like the Merry Month Of May.
Avatar 7:08pm northguineahills:

meanwhile, in Florida...... *sighs deeply*
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:10pm Webhamster Henry:

Show tunes used to be a good source of pop tunery!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:11pm Webhamster Henry:

Ella Fitzgerald's Mac The Knife is known for her forgetting the lyrics and just scatting while apologizing.
Avatar 7:16pm northguineahills:

Wow, there was even a Satchmo the Great Film. And the music done by Kurt Weil. I feel so ignorant.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:18pm Sweet Corn Lizzie:

Some Enchanted Evening makes me shiver. The chords, the tune are perfect.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:18pm Bronwyn Bishop:

@Lizzie: Story that tangentially relates to that: The main character's name is Julie and she gets pregnant as a main part of the plot, and when 15-year-old Stephen Sondheim, quasi-adopted son of the Hammerstein family, went to see the show's premiere, he was amazed by the audacity of Rodgers and Hammerstein having the whole chorus sing "Julie's busting out all over!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:19pm Sweet Corn Lizzie:

Oh that's fantastic! Thanks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:20pm diciassette:

Hi Bronywn and all you guys. Favorite show tunes show AND deejay, that's for sure!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:25pm Webhamster Henry:

There's a reference to the Music-Pop crossover in the movie "Grace Of My Heart", where the aspiring pop singer heroine auditions with "Hey There" from the Pajama Game before being told no one wants that kind of singer and music anymore. en.wikipedia.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:28pm Bronwyn Bishop:

@ngh: Weill just did the music for Mack the Knife- not the Satchmo film
Avatar 7:28pm northguineahills:

Thought I had this Platters rekkid....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:35pm Bronwyn Bishop:

@diciassette: aww ur the best <3
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:37pm Webhamster Henry:

Psycle were so grooviesly nuggety.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:45pm diciassette:

I think I and the people on my dad's side of the family (the dark ones anyway) have Judy Garland eyes
Avatar 7:47pm WR:

Hi, have been listening, but except for spending 10 minutes trying to figure out how all those things you mentioned are found in Carousel, busy with work tonight. Thanks for the show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:49pm Webhamster Henry:

I have Gigi in French - and I think of the English version as a translation!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:49pm Webhamster Henry:

I should probably do a cover with Ken's Goat Scream all over it.
Avatar 7:54pm northguineahills:

Gee, I have this Gigi album as well. I think this is the mist albums Bronwyn has played that I have....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:55pm diciassette:

I am still a little creeped out by that song (as well as the Kinks' Art Lover)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:55pm diciassette:

I love Gigi though!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:56pm diciassette:

Not to mention Maurice
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:02pm Bronwyn Bishop:

hey WR!! thanks for listening!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:02pm Bronwyn Bishop:

@Henry and diciassette: it is definitely a bit creepy and deserves a goat scream rendition...sadly there are many show tunes that fall into that category
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:04pm Webhamster Henry:

I have this Cole Porter tune too - there's a good reissue with him singing a bunch of his songs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:06pm Jim the Poet:

Cellophane??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:06pm diciassette:

Cellophane!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:07pm Bronwyn Bishop:

I think cellophane probably seemed more exciting back in 1935
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:08pm Jim the Poet:

Calambert is pretty cool
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:08pm Webhamster Henry:

Paul Frees Channeling Harry Richman.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:08pm Webhamster Henry:

Paul Frees ALWAYS sounds like Paul Frees.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:09pm diciassette:

have you guys heard But in the Morning, No! (still on C. Porter topic) it's my theme song
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:11pm Sweet Corn Lizzie:

Cole and Paul Frees, both great!

Pretty sure I've heard But in the Morning, No! on this very show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:13pm Bronwyn Bishop:

i have never played nor heard of but in the morning, no! I will check it out. i am always learning from you guys :D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:16pm diciassette:

aha! youtu.be...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:16pm Sweet Corn Lizzie:

Wow I didn't realize Vincent Price did musical comedy! Recognized him immediately.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:17pm Bronwyn Bishop:

@diciassette: wow what an album cover!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:19pm Webhamster Henry:

I made Babs singing "People" into a sample on my Mirage sampler back in the late 80s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:19pm diciassette:

I have that! It's one of the fantastic records my barber gave me (I'm headed back to the haircut agency in early July)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:19pm Bronwyn Bishop:

@Lizzie: I think that was his only musical. Wikipedia mysteriously claims he starred as Grover in a musical adaptation of The Monster at the End of this Book, but I can't find anything to back that up...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:20pm Bronwyn Bishop:

@diciassette: you must be excited to get a haircut! i am FINALLY getting one tomorrow
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:20pm diciassette:

I've decided to go for Lionel Barrymore in You Can't Take it With You (I'll get a second opinion, of course)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:22pm Webhamster Henry:

All Exclamation Point Musical Shows next time! Also: question mark musicals.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:23pm Bronwyn Bishop:

@diciassette: heck yeah thats gonna look great!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:25pm Bronwyn Bishop:

@Henry: that is a GREAT idea!! i think "is there life after high school?" is the only question mark musical i can think of...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:28pm Sweet Corn Lizzie:

Maybe just musical questions?
You have to give your answer in the form of a question?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:35pm Webhamster Henry:

I thought How Now, Dow Jones had a question mark -- it OUGHT to.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:36pm Bronwyn Bishop:

It should but sadly doesn't
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:36pm Webhamster Henry:

This might be helpful : en.wikipedia.org...
en.wikipedia.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:37pm Bronwyn Bishop:

very nice, i'll do a control-f for exclamation points! thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:38pm diciassette:

mamma mia!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:38pm Webhamster Henry:

What Makes Sammy Run? where's Charlie? Do Black Patent Leather Shoes Really Reflect Up? Do I Hear a Waltz?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:47pm Bronwyn Bishop:

How did I forget Do I Hear a Waltz!?!?!?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:47pm Bronwyn Bishop:

maybe it didn't do well because the public was confused by it ending in a question mark instead of an exclamation point
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:51pm Webhamster Henry:

Do I Hear a Waltz? I Do! I Do!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:51pm Bronwyn Bishop:

that would be a great/weird double bill!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:54pm Webhamster Henry:

I'm kind of glad Sondheim didn't end up doing Big Fish.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:55pm Bronwyn Bishop:

Was he originally supposed to?? That would be interesting indeed
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:56pm Webhamster Henry:

I like how Evening Primrose, being a TV Musical, didn't need to pad itself out with filler.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:57pm Webhamster Henry:

So you're pencilled in for a Friday Dance Party, I hear.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:02pm Bronwyn Bishop:

Yes!! I am going to pay homage to the lovably trashy decade of my childhood with an '00S DANCE PARTY!!! Backstreet Boys, Britney, Beyonce, Shakira, Gaga, Kesha, etc
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:04pm Bronwyn Bishop:

going into slight OT again!! someday i will figure out how to make a show exactly 2 hours
Avatar 9:04pm WR:

Thank you Bronwyn!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:05pm Webhamster Henry:

There is slack in the Drummer stream.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:05pm diciassette:

I love that in one of the Gilmore Girls episodes they had a 2002 themed party (the episode probably came out in 2007) Thanks Bronwyn!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:06pm Webhamster Henry:

We could have a 2019 theme party at this point.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:06pm Bronwyn Bishop:

thank YOU WR!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:07pm Bronwyn Bishop:

@diciassette: The movie Lady Bird is set in 2002 and made me feel all kinds of nostalgic
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:07pm diciassette:

I'm waiting, hopefully, for the Roaring Twomps
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:08pm diciassette:

A love letter to Sacramento, that was!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:08pm Webhamster Henry:

Fun fact - I'm actually in the chorus of the version of Without You that was used in the recent movie "The Farewell"'s ending credits.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09pm Webhamster Henry:

Lots of Exclamation points in this DISASTER! musical!
Avatar 9:11pm WR:

And overtime is welcome every Friday. You can go another hour easily (for we listening)
