Bagpipe, put a dinosaur in the AC. It's about to get hot in here.

Hey Nate and everyone
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12pm Nate K.:

Hey, everybody. Thanks for dropping by. Let's have some fun tonight, and maybe even learn something. (I kid, strictly fun.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13pm mariano:

This Vintage Crop kicks ass.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14pm efd:

hey everyone, just checking in to see which songs I need to pull out of my virtual new bin for tomorrow night! :)
Avatar 9:15pm Joe B:

great version of this tune right here!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16pm Nate K.:

Com on, Evan. Let's manufacture some hits!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16pm efd:

seriously! I was not previously aware of this cover!
Avatar 9:16pm katie:

oh yes. the shop assistants need a comeback.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16pm efd:

We'll start with the Shop Assistants!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16pm ultradamno:

Neko Case did a good run on this Shangri-Las tune too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17pm Nate K.:

I'd say it's maybe the definitive cover. I've always wondered if this was where Superchunk got the template.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17pm Aitch:

Neko Case could sing a phone-book (if there is still such a thing)
Avatar 9:17pm slugluv1313:

hiya, Nate and everyone!
ah yes, but always remember how learning can happen via fun :)
por ejemplo, learned about the amazing Shop Assistants from listening to FMU
Avatar 9:18pm slugluv1313:

hi katie!!!
cuddles to the kitties :)
(hah if they *allow* you in this HUMIDITY!)
Avatar 9:18pm Joe B:

@ultra - yes! agreed, love her take
Avatar 9:19pm slugluv1313:

Alice Bag! freakin' awesome
Avatar 9:21pm Joe B:

The organ on this Alice Bag cut reminds me of when Mary Weiss returned to performing around the Norton album - with Dave Amels rocking the organ and Dennis D. on drums, their version of Train From Kansas City sounded like Mary fronting the Rascals!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22pm Nate K.:

@Ultra, that Neko take is great. Her voice is perfectly suited.
  9:24pm CC:

Hi Nate...and all... just dropping by for a listen!!!...cheerz!!..
Avatar 9:24pm Joe B:

Cold Light of Day - an FMU lockdown classic!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25pm ultradamno:

Blue Eyes sounded like they swiped Young Marble Giants' Peter Joyce drum machine
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28pm mariano:

You know how YouTube often has "[band name] - Topic" as a channel when you look up a particular band? I just learned there's a "Various Artists - Topic" channel. Come to think of it, I love many songs by Various Artists.
Avatar 9:30pm Joe B:

@mariano - love Various Artists. they did a lot of soundtracks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30pm Baja Joe:

This is good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31pm ultradamno:

Has there ever been a band called The Various Artists (speaking of Young Marble Giants, an offshoot band of them is Stuart Moxham & The Original Artists)?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31pm dave wuz here:

mary weiss' "train from" is incredible
Avatar 9:32pm slugluv1313:

@ mariano -- right?!
my mind is still boggling (is that even a word??) over that Carbon Nation channel from MOMC earlier
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33pm efd:

Tuesday nights on WFMU, your place for H O T T A K E S !
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34pm mariano:

Was wondering the same thing, ultradamno. Copyright that sucker! sugluv: yeah, it was a crazy MOMC episode.

nate k: what are 2-3 beatles albums you *would* rate highly ?
  9:35pm CC:

I'm a sucker for stuff that's live mic in a good room!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35pm Nate K.:

@thesecoronalives, I love "Revolver," that comes to mind.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36pm Nate K.:

@efd come for the rock, stay for the enlightening conversation.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37pm ultradamno:

I like The Beatles Play The Residents and The Residents Play The Beatles
  9:38pm thesecoronalives:

@nate k: interesting and not exactly the clue to gaining any better understanding that i maybe had hoped for.. : - D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39pm ultradamno:

Maybe Klaatu...though I think they started that rumor themselves.
  9:40pm CC:

Bruuuuuccce!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49pm Baja Joe:

Limo Beach sounds like KISS, but better
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50pm Handy Haversack:

Good call, Baja Joe!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50pm ultradamno:

I have ethical issues with this. I mean if you're in the liquor store, just grab liquor, why fuck around with wine? Unless you're rolling drunks which...ewww.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52pm Handy Haversack:

Limousine Beach sounds like it would be near vineyards and vintners' sheds. I imagine the wine is being stolen from massive casks. And there are watch geese.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52pm ultradamno:

You DO NOT want to fuck with geese in my experience!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53pm Handy Haversack:

100 percent. Not all Canadians are nice.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56pm mariano:

Swans are scary too. When I was in England in Sep/Oct last year I was taking a hike through some marshland and there was this swan colony. They're huge! They're like ostriches with little stubby legs, and they seem pissed off about it. I slinked past them submissively. Could've sworn I heard one of them mutter "Keep moving, shitbird."
  9:58pm CC:

Beer and pot, in just the right complementary amounts, is all a person needs, in my humble opinion...mmmm... in addition to music and love of course!!!...:)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02pm Handy Haversack:

Yeah, Mariano, there's a river we paddle in Michigan every year, and we go up and back and I always press to head out toward the lake, but there are swans down by the causeway, and Kate's basically said, "I think we know what the view looks like. This is far enough!"

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06pm ultradamno:

Very animated dancing skeleton. Like if Scissor Girls could do a better early Birthday Party
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06pm efd:

@nick Definitely go back and check their 2018 release Mating Surfaces, it's also great! (As was their live set on my show that year, just saying... )
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07pm nickybones:

@efd: oh WOW, didn't realize they'd come through. Will definitely check out both, thanks!

You're killin' it, Nate!!!
Avatar 10:42pm Joe B:

Motown turned down gwen owens, guess they couldn't always be right!
  10:43pm CC:

Dang..!.. this kind of music is what we've been missing for a while!!!...:)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47pm mariano:

Joe: yeah, they also put out Rockwell!
Avatar 10:50pm Joe B:

ha, well it was a big seller! i think he was Berry's nephew or something
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51pm Nate K.:

I've read that Motown almost signed the Fall. That makes my head spin. They must have really been searching for a new angle.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53pm ultradamno:

I've read that before, might have been in Renegade. Smith said Gordy got a copy of Hex Enduction Hour and he (Smith) was like "Oh, shit" because of how might react to 'that line' in The Classical. I posit no one at Motown got that far into the record.
Avatar 10:54pm Joe B:

well they did have Meat Loaf before he was famous
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54pm Nate K.:

I don't know the Meat Loaf connection.
  10:54pm CC:

Motown became a big racket just like so many other things...people found other ways to get the stuff out...
Avatar 10:55pm Joe B:

meatloaf was signed to the Rare Earth label
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55pm Nate K.:

@Ultra, I heard "that line" is what busted the deal. So, who knows?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55pm mariano:

Gordy's son actually. There's a cool YT channel, Todd in the Shadows, does a show called One Hit Wonderland, does a 15-20 min video for each song/band. He did one about Rockwell, was interesting. Apparently BG was never a big part of his life, he was from a previous marriage. He got his record deal without his father's knowledge, which is cool I guess, but of course everybody else knew who he was, so...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55pm Nate K.:

As Meat Loaf?!
Avatar 10:56pm Joe B:

yeah a male/female due - Meatloaf & Stoney was the billing
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57pm ultradamno:

I've never heard of anyone at Motown commenting on it. Just Smith's words, and he never let facts get in the way of a good narrative.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57pm Blacktooth:

This Roy Brooks is heavy like a truckload of bricks. Great stuff.
Avatar 10:57pm Joe B:

I doubt Berry was involved. There was thought they might start a UK version of a rock label like Rare Earth. I'm sure that line was the deal breaker but 'almost signed' is probably 'was one of dozens of bands they considered'
Avatar 10:58pm Joe B:

@mariano - ah cool! will have to investigate. figured he had to have some pull to get two Jacksons on his record!
  10:59pm Frank:

+1 on the Roy Brooks!
Avatar 11:03pm Joe B:

breaking news, hot takes - Nate brings it all!
  11:03pm CC:

I know it's probably not the right time to mention it but there have always been black racists just like there have been white racists maybe not in the same category???
Avatar 11:04pm Joe B:

@nate - ha!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04pm mariano:

Yesss! Fred Garvin!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04pm ultradamno:

He wore a truss.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05pm mariano:

In the best version of the universe, the two Garvins would be one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06pm ultradamno:

I have never heard a Jacques Brel cover on FMU. That was great. I stumbled upon the very moving ritual dedicating a plaque to him in Paris in 2019.
