Hey Snoochie, Handy, Krys, Hughie et al.

Snooch - It was really nice thanks man. We drank ginger ale, scoffed a lot and sat in the sun. Saw a couple of friends that I hadn't seen in ages, and it was like a burst of pure energy. Really great. Did you make it out for your ride?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:08am Marley P. Dogg:

Avatar 9:13am Snoochienucci:

David, that sounds awesome. 2 weeks ago i jammed with my longtime music partner for the first time since all this started. We played outside, and like you said was a burst of energy just getting back to some sense of normalcy and connecting again. Happy to hear you guys had a good time.

And yup, got out, did a nice 40 miler. Was my justification for having my big weekly italian american sunday dinner and drinking beer all day by the pool. Gotta have the balance!

Good morning all. Hey Handy, DiL, Snooch
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15am efd:

I never thought I'd be wishing for the good old days of Bob Dylan singing "Silver Bells" last week, but Eddie Blazonczyk and his Versatones did the trick.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15am Otis Fodder:

Top of the morning Joe and folks, just scratching the surface of the hot day here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17am Handy Haversack:

Phillippe! How goes?

Ha, I missed Eddie B while running around for a minute. Now I can't tell if I regret it. (And hi, efd!)
  9:17am John in Bklyn:

@LP: Haha! I think it was the sound of the nice crispy vinyl that won me over.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17am David (in London):

Phillippe, hey man, good to see you.

Snooch - Yes, I think these little get togethers are really necessary to help ease us back into normality on our own terms. And man, I need to get back on the bike, too. I've not done any major days out for a long time. We should swap musical work at some stage as well.
Avatar 9:17am Joe McG:

@efd: Ha ha ha!
  9:18am Colleen:

Always sooo goood Joe!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18am David (in London):

This Carmen Miranda was used in the final episode of The Prisoner. Always brings a smile to my face.

Avatar 9:18am fm Mike:

Ugh, that is so weird - I just got a call from the place that I have an interview for this morning, and I was so afraid they were calling to say it was cancelled - But it turns out that they just had to reschedule for later today. Phew!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18am Rich in Washington:

I don't think there exists a version of The Men in My Little Girl's Life that doesn't have some edge of creepiness to it.

Avatar 9:22am fm Mike:

Diggin' the Latin vibes this morning Joe! They remind me that some songs from the late 80s - early 90s strike a chord with me, because that was stuff I absorbed as a little kid, BUT DO NOT KNOW THE NAME OF!!!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28am David (in London):

TDK - Have some coffee beans, batter a cow bell, and that should perk you up plenty.

Snooch - My wife and I operate as a musical duo. She does the singing, and I provide the music. Our album came out last year, and had some decent play here on FMU, which was a thrill. We've got a track on this year's Marathon Premium for the Serious Moonlight Sonatas show also.

Morning David. Can you provide the name of your music duo, or point us to where it is in the archives?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30am David (in London):

Yeti Bob - Yeah man, there's a reason why people aren't singing that one regularly at karaoke nights. And hello to you good sir.
Avatar 9:31am Cp304:

Yeti bob, you think that was bad, I think MrFab scooped me to frank mix tape “come suck with me”. It’s real bad
Avatar 9:31am Snoochienucci:

Ohh sweet David. Whats the name/where to find? Congrats on the airtime and being on the premium. Thats great!

Avatar 9:41am Rich in Bay Ridge:

Wow, I used to listen to the last 20 minutes or so of The Big Broadcast as it waa on before the One on One sports show - a student hosted sports talk show which predated the wasteland of sports radio by decades.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41am David (in London):

I was so tired last night that even the people in my dreams were asleep.

Snooch / TDK - We call ourselves Daona, so you can find us here via the artist search. The album is called The Secret Assembly, and you can download it free from our Bandcamp page, which you are both very welcome to do. Alternatively, I can mail you a CD if you'd prefer a hard copy. Just DM me your postal addresses. Some 'special guests' on it (Evan Parker, Gary Spain from Chrome and Edgar Breau from Simply Saucer) that you may know if you like any of those artists.

There’s a long running Sunday night show of the same name on American U radio...

Avatar 9:46am fm Mike:

David (In London) your music sounds interesting! When I get expendable money again, I might buy your cd :D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46am Handy Haversack:

Can attest to the quality of Daona's album! Lotta talent behind that fox mask!
Avatar 9:47am TDK60:

You mean to say, there wasn't some UK '60s Mod or psych outfit called The Flash?
Avatar 9:47am Snoochienucci:

I assume the fox mask grants some sort of additional musical powers

Wow, Eighteenth Day of May -- every song I hear I love. This Mekons track is wonderful, too.

Joe, I'm in!
Avatar 9:59am Joe McG:

Yes, the Mekons have a new digital album up on Bandcamp that they recorded in lockdown. Check it out! @Handy: I'm so happy that TEDOM got reissued!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59am Handy Haversack:

That Mekons song made me think of that lovely show The Detectorists.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59am David (in London):

Ah, more cow bell. That was just what was needed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01am Tim 07030:

Worth noting that the Mekons album is only $8. That's $1 per Mekon!

Heart Of Glass or Hot Stuff?
  10:03am Colleen:

Great show Joe!!!
Avatar 10:04am Joe McG:

@zivilars: The Chinese translation is "Heart of Glass" - they often rewrite the lyrics in these covers!
Avatar 10:04am zivilars:

I see – that was a tricky trap considering the Blondie song!

Joe McG, was hanging outside with my brother yesterday. I popped on Willie Nelson's cover of "Summertime". Dont remember if you played that specific one on your summertime show, last year (or maybe 2 at this point?). But either way reminded me of that great show you did with the many versions of that song. Let summer begin!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21am Handy Haversack:

David, I reluctantly assume this awesome responsibility and attendant glory.

We're going McCraezy!
  10:22am John in Bklyn:

@pantz: I remember reading an interview with Bill Laswell in the mid 80s and he said jazz was dead then! Wynton Marsalis used to think jazz died with Bitches Brew!
Avatar 10:22am Joe McG:

Hey Stanley, Handy, ami, all! @Snoochie: Maybe I'll play a "Summertime" later!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24am pantz:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31am YETI BOB:

@Handy: Have you ever seen the live concert film "Storefront Hitchcock" (Jonathan Demme dir.) It has some of my favorite live Robyn Hitchcock performances. A great version of "Yip" as well as absolutely emotionally devastating versions of "1974" and "No, I Don't Remem ber Guildford". One of my "desert island discs", maybe
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31am Handy Haversack:

  11:34am Dennis Diken:

diggin’ the noise Joe!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34am YETI BOB:

As you know if you've ever seen one of his performances, Robyn Hitchcock does great spoken-word bits between the tracks, which are great.... he's really at the top of his form in this film. The album version of the soundtrack is good but omits some songs. (I think the CD and LP omit different tracks).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34am YETI BOB:

back story to "The Yip Song" is interesting/tragic but I won't retell it here, it's not my story to tell.

Avatar 11:36am Joe McG:

@Yeti: Tell it, BOB! @Dennis: Happy Monday!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36am Hughie Considine:

True, @Yeti Bob. Robyn's songs often sound whimsical but reveal dark themes when you look closer. And "The Yip Song" is a sad one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36am coelacanth∅:

just listened to the first 4-5 seconds of "summer" and yes i know it! but i don't think it's on any of my albums. (9, i just counted)
i don't know what album it could be on.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37am efd:

@coel I think it only on their Greatest Hits album when it was first released.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39am coelacanth∅:

oh, that makes sense Evan. and here i thought i was so smart getting just the albums
  11:40am Dean:

efd's correct. Only released as a single upon the issue of the GH: https://www.discogs.com/War-Greatest-Hits/release/579651
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40am David (in London):

Yeti Bob - A friend of a friend used to run a pub called The Three Greyhounds on Clerkenwell Green. He was a good friend of Robyn, and when Robyn was in town he would turn up at the pub with his guitar and just sit in the corner playing covers. I saw him do it a few times, and it was awesome. He took requests, and turn one for 'Ace of Spades' into a piece about Marc Bolan. It was terrific.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41am Hughie Considine:

@David, that sounds divine. Robyn is an amazing improviser. I saw him play at the Bottom Line and someone handed him a copy of Ulysses, and he opened it and began to sing from it. (He was at the piano at the moment.)
  11:41am Brendan:

@Hughie ... I like Robyn’s ‘Cheese Alarm’ , whimsical that one....I think the only dark undertone might have been the ever growing waistline..

  11:43am battleaxe:

You know what they say about great minds Joe and Joe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44am YETI BOB:

@Brendan: "Half the world sits on the other and gloats" is pretty dark! As Robyn said once "I'm a grim bastard" (IIRC)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45am Hughie Considine:

True @David. Robyn deals in surrealistic imagery, but his genuineness and humanity always show through.
