Great to see you, @DJpeterDE!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:08am Andrew Waterloo:

good morning
Avatar 9:08am DJpeterDE:

Glad you're doing this, the only non-King Crimson Tippett that I have is in the company of the South Africans.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09am Jeff Golick:

'mornin', @Andrew Waterloo!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12am Jeff Golick:

Yeah, @DJpeterDE. Unfortunate circumstances, but here we are. BTW, enjoyed your twitter commentary on the Iyer Trio set!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13am Jeff Golick:

Here's a good Tippett obit, by John Fordham at the Guardian, if interested: www.theguardian.com...
Avatar 9:14am holland oats:

  9:16am DJpeterDE:

Thanks Jeff! I find “live tweeting” a very strange thing to do
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18am Jeff Golick:

S'up, @holland oats!
  9:18am Listener Gregory:

Morning, all. Remember that others might be only thinkers, we are DOers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18am Jeff Golick:

Heyo, @Listener Gregory!
  9:18am Listener Gregory:

Tippett's technique is very interesting. I would like to have seen him live, to watch him actually play.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22am doctorjazz:

Hello Outies!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23am Jeff Golick:

Hello, @doctorjazz!
  9:24am DJpeterDE:

@LG do you play piano?
  9:28am DJpeterDE:

I was fortunate to see Don Pullen live (quartet). Regret never saw Cecil Taylor.
Avatar 9:29am hyde:

I got to see Ceil Taylor once. That was cool.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30am Jeff Golick:

Never saw Pullen (or Tippett, for that matter), but did see Cecil play every chance I could get.
  9:30am Doug Schulkind:

I love you, D:O!
Avatar 9:31am hyde:

it was at the Western Front in Cambridge. JG, do you remember that place? it was mostly a reggae club, but they occasionally had offbeat shows. I saw Negativland there too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31am Jeff Golick:

Love you, too, @Doug Schulkind!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31am Jeff Golick:

@hyde, very cool. I remember ads for that club, but never made it there!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32am doctorjazz:

Got to see Don Pullen a many times. CT only twice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33am doctorjazz:

Damn, forgot about the Iyer...
  9:34am Listener Gregory:

Jeff, for many years I could play chopsticks on the piano, but now I don't think I would risk it. Without practice, your chops just go to hell.
  9:35am Listener Robert:

I'm having trouble even imagining Negativland performing live, hyde! It's like they'd be missing their instruments.
Avatar 9:36am hyde:

@Listener Robert it was amazing. they came onstage, put a toaster down, put two pieces of bread in it and then let them cook for like ten minutes and the entire club filled with smoke
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38am Jeff Golick:

  9:38am DJpeterDE:

Wow indeed
  9:39am DJpeterDE:

@doc Iyer streaming again today 2:00 Eastern
Avatar 9:42am Stork:

Hi-dee-ho-dee, D-O-dees!
  9:42am Listener Gregory:

Little known that Claude Thornhill first used a toaster on-stage in 1943. He was ahead of his time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42am Jeff Golick:

Warmest greetings, @Stork!
Avatar 9:44am Stork:

@Gregory: his toaster work after about 1947 really disappointed me.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48am Jeff Golick:

Wassup, @StringOFperils! And @Dave in Vermont!
Avatar 9:48am Stork:

Nice recovery, StringO. It's that damned accusative case, and not the dative. Shout out to my grammar-geeks!!
  9:50am Listener Gregory:

@DJpeterDE, also Evans realized the strings of a harp could be electrified and used to grill bacon, while also playing arpeggios. Genius!
Avatar 9:51am StringOFperils:

Actually, Stork, it's my stubby fingers, my shaky typing technique, and more than anything else, my need of new prescription reading-glasses.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51am doctorjazz:

Getting he very hungry...
  9:52am DJpeterDE:

I recall fondly the addition of electric harp to make the nonet a tentette
  9:53am Listener Gregory:

Let's not harp on this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55am doctorjazz:

Tired of you guys just stringing me along.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56am doctorjazz:

(Thanks for the link, DJpeteDE!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56am Jeff Golick:

Well, Guinness a kiss and all is forgiven.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57am Jeff Golick:

(That might be stretching it.)
Avatar 9:58am Stork:

With the harp logo? We gotcha, Jeff!
Avatar 9:59am Stork:

I once played Peggio on the harp using lots of arpeggios. Now THAT'S stretching it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am Jeff Golick:

You gotta follow your gliss(ando), @Stork.
  10:01am DJpeterDE:

@Doc, thank Dave for the link!
Avatar 10:01am StringOFperils:

Someone should re-string two concert harps with nichrome wire instead of regular strings, arrange the two harps in a parallel position, connect them to the electrical mains, and hang a piece of bread between them. Like a really big, dangerous toaster....maybe a one-off performance...burning toast at Burning Man....I dunno....maybe just another coffee is a better idea...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03am doctorjazz:

Oops, thanks, Dave!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05am Doug Schulkind:

I'm coming at you with my JJ Johnson/Kai Winding, but I come in peace.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05am doctorjazz:

Coffee sounds good...
(I should get off my arse and bike while it's not too not...)
  10:08am Listener Gregory:

@StringO', there's an interesting variation of Russian roulette, in which one string of a harp is electrified, and two harpists successively play chords until one of them got juiced. Handy if you don't have a revolver—and have two harpists.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11am Jeff Golick:

@Doug: that's good. One of my earliest jazz experiences was finding a JJ/Kai at Newport record in my folks collection. Had no idea what to make of it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12am Jeff Golick:

@doc: thinking of you, as I have been invited to a father/son bike ride this afternoon with a friend of mine. He is an avid cyclist. I am...afraid.
  10:13am DJpeterDE:

I did not see this groove coming but I am glad it arrived
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15am Jeff Golick:

This is an odd record. Hard to categorize.
Avatar 10:15am hyde:

started reading Val Wilmer's As Serious As Your Life yesterday, which is quite good. But I keep amusing myself by imagining an alternate universe in which this book on free jazz is actually written by Val Kilmer.
  10:16am ?:

Saw Mujician at Victo in '99.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16am doctorjazz:

How long a ride, Jeff? Getting lazier in my old age...is just as soon spend a half hour on the stationary bike at night as go for a 2 hour ride.
Avatar 10:16am StringOFperils:

Great to hear this stuff. Takes me back to that time of the final Soft Machine albums. A different kind of fusion to that found in North America. I don't really think of it as jazz per se. Simply art music.
  10:16am Listener Gregory:

Any album title based on a Monty Python quote is worth having.
  10:16am ?=Dean:

Up there^
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16am doctorjazz:

Used to like circling the Prospect Park road back when I lived in the Slope...
  10:17am DJpeterDE:

Hey! The drunken sheilas is available at the D:O bandcamp store!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18am Jeff Golick:

@hyde: that book is astonishingly good; so glad it exists. Funnily enough, in a recent Ethan Iverson post -- a long interview with a British jazz promoter -- the author *is* accidentally referred to as Val Kilmer. (Since fixed.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20am Doug Schulkind:

As Serious as Your Life is a godhead. It's been my bible since my senior year in high school.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21am Jeff Golick:

@Dean! Welcome. How was the show?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22am Jeff Golick:

@doc: I dunno how long...the guy who invited me rode from Brooklyn yesterday to the Tappan Zee and back, so I'm hoping he's too tired to go for very long today.
  10:22am Dean:

They were amazing. I started collecting Tippett and Dunmall from that point.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26am Jeff Golick:

@LG @10:16 - what is the Python reference??

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28am Jeff Golick:

Thank you, @SOp! Piranha Brothers!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29am alanr:

gracias, always, for my Sunday morning continuity. Eventually, (early July) I will attempt to return to Brooklyn from my Mexico city exile.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29am Jeff Golick:

Ah, @alanr! Brooklyn awaits. Glad you are here and continuing.
  10:33am Listener Gregory:

The Piranha Brothers were twins; one was born a week after the other, I believe. Another good title from that skit would be "'E nailed my 'ead to a table!"
Avatar 10:37am WR:

Nice Tippett set. Thanks. Read of his passing from Cuneiform email about their 5 dollar special this weekend. I knew you would some how acknowledge Tippett's.
  10:38am Listener Gregory:

This is making me nervous. It seems that I am finally going to be held account for my sins. (Blood in the River)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40am Jeff Golick:

@WR, glad you enjoyed. I fear I've fallen off of the Cuneiform list -- or the emails now go direct to spam...
Avatar 10:41am WR:

I think of the Piranha Bros. everytime Doug makes his presence known in comments.
  10:43am Listener Gregory:

Then there was the anteater, Spiny Norman, who pursued Dinsdale Piranha, to his death I believe. Tragic case.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43am Uncle Michael:

good morning, movers and shakers
Avatar 10:44am Sem:

Good morning, Jeff. Doug and Dinsdale, D:O-ers, UM the disco king, and all-in jazz types.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45am Jeff Golick:

Dinsdale! @Uncle Michael! You recovered from Friday?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46am Uncle Michael:

Yes indeed. Thank you for inquiring after my welfare.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47am Jeff Golick:

Hey, @Sem!

Ok, so Spiny was a hedgehog? And also, apparently, the name of someone's high school band (sort of): www.loudersound.com...
  10:48am Listener Gregory:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48am Uncle Michael:

Was it their first band in high school?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48am Doug Schulkind:

Don't kid yourself, people. The more hours Uncle Michael does on the radio, the stronger he gets.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50am Uncle Michael:

Go ahead...kid yourself.
Avatar 10:50am Sem:

Spiny Norman, I think.
  10:51am Listener Gregory:

NO one expects Spiny Norman!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51am doctorjazz:

Have a soft spot for Billy Harper. Went to see him (are a now looking gone club on Flatbush Avenue), with me daughter, who must have been 9-10 years old. After his 1st set, my daughter and I went up to him to tell him we loved his set, and he graciously spoke to us for a bit (my daughter used to do this when we hit jazz clubs, most, but not all, the musicians were foods about it). Anyway, we stayed for the second set, and Harper introduces his set by dedicating it to "Papa and Little Miss", looking at us at our table. My daughter was in heaven...never forgot it (he even sent us a card months later). Such a doll!
Avatar 10:53am StringOFperils:

@drJazz > Heh. Your story just reminded me of Ken Nordine's 'My Baby'.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53am Jeff Golick:

Well that's the sweetest father's day story ever.
Avatar 10:55am Stork:

I now love Billy Harper more deeply.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56am doctorjazz:

(Typo...most, if not all, the musicians were GOOD about it...)
(and I proofread it, no less)
Avatar 10:56am hyde:

that is a great story
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57am Doug Schulkind:

I had a very lovely encounter with Billy Harper at a show once, too. As the wise person is known to say, "Once is never, twice is always."
Avatar 10:58am WR:

Thank you for sharing that doctorjazz. Now thinking of you as papajazz.
  10:59am Nordenberg:

Hello Jeff. I was just watching the speeches from the Oakland longshore shutdown march on Juneteenth. All west coast were ports were shut. Angela D. was one of the speakers.

@Granny Spicy, your tuna is looking more, ummm.... aggressive these days.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am Jeff Golick:

Hey, @TDK60! Yeah, that was some huge shutdown. Amazing. The labor movement has not always been...uh..let's say progressive in this way?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12am Jeff Golick:

Good morning, @Granny Spicy Tuna! Angela is so on the money about everything...and so long ago.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12am Jeff Golick:

Heya, @coelacanth∅!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14am doctorjazz:

Thanks Jeff! Yes, it is hard for most of us, not just students, to embrace the discomfort sometimes needed to confront things, DJpeterDE.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14am Jeff Golick:

@DJpeterDE: discomfort-as-good-thing is hard to wrap one's head around, particularly if one is very unused to being uncomfortable.
Avatar 11:15am TDK60:

WR, video is found easily but let me know if you need a link. Yeah, Jeff some of the ILWU speakers said they've had to struggle inside their union, and that's a left-leaning one. But they have a better record than most. They even came out for prisoner Mumia-Abu-Jamal once, also against the Iraq War.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16am Jeff Golick:

Hey, @Nordenberg -- belated greets to you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19am Jeff Golick:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39am doctorjazz:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45am doctorjazz:
