"I listened yesterday. It's no reflection on you but I could'nt see where you were going or what you were going for. This early seventies thing did'nt get noticed the first time and you talk about friends of like Dealney and Bonnie who had records out like we're supposed to remember who they are. Then you play this long winded free jazz stuff that really grates on my nerves. And that noise without a beat and sounds like someones being pinched. Then you play a reggae song, I think you called it Dub, to what, be cool? You seem to really fetishize the whole folk thing too which is obnoxious to us who don't even care. I liked it when you played that punk song though. I like Joe Belock a lot." (Visit homepage.)

G'morning John! Hi Jennica and David (in London), nice to see you here today!

FYI TCM showed three more great movies that featured jazz music last night: The Warped Ones, Elevator to the Gallows and Knife in the Water.
Avatar 9:10am Mary from Lisbon:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10am Krys O.:

Just checked and those three films are streaming on Watch TCM.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12am David (in London):

Hey Yeti Bob, good to see you too man. How's Chicago?
Hi Jennica.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12am Threemoons:

Good morning JA, fellow AMers...TGIF from muggy Astoria, NYC
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15am YETI BOB:

@KrysO: Thanks for the movie suggestions, I'm always on the lookout for good ones! I checked and those 3 films are also on the Criterion Collection. "Elevator to the Gallows" has a Miles Davis soundtrack, will definitely check that one out! "Knife in the Water" is by Polanski so I might take a pass on that one.

Hello D.J. Hello all. WFMU strong. Got to go Postal,I'll be back.ShalomS.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17am David (in London):

Miles' 'Generique' from his 'Lift to the Scaffold' soundtrack always hovers around about to break into my all time top ten I think.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19am Krys O.:

I used to watch Knife in the Water with my Polish dad when it was shown on PBS in the 70s. He really enjoyed Andrzej Wajda's films. You can always listen to Krzystof Komeda's S/T to Knife. It's great.

Saw Elevator on the big screen many years ago. Never saw the Warped Ones. I DVRd it to enjoy when I have more leisure time.
Avatar 9:21am Jennica:

Hi David (iL). Hi YETI BOB. I'm happy to see you here, too.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24am Handy Haversack:

Anyone have the URL handy (wait, what?!) for that list of 1800 Black artists on Bandcamp?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24am YETI BOB:

@David: I'm pretty good, my sleep schedule is totally messed up: I fell asleep in the afternoon yesterday, then I was up most of night. Chicago is slowly opening up but I don't think people are taking too many risks - I had a few drinks in a beer-garden set up in a parking lot, tables all 10 feet apart. Our beloved lakeshore is still closed. I've got my little container garden on the balcony (flowers, tomatoes, herbs). Baby birds everywhere, I've had to rescue a few from my voracious cats. So I'm finding things to keep me from going completely insane. And I'm lucky to still be employed. But it's a rough time for everyone in the USA right now... nobody knows what's going to happen next, and iwe're all on pins and needles.
@Handy - good morning!

I have no connection to him but I want to plug Ben LaMar Gay because he's absolutely amazing. Cannot recommend this album highly enough: "Downtown Castles will Never Block the Sun" intlanthem.bandcamp.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36am YETI BOB:

Another perfect Juneteenth Bandcamp purchase would be "Where Future Unfolds" by Damon Locks' Black Monument Ensemble - intlanthem.bandcamp.com... . OK that's enough from me! - going to drink coffee on the balcony and watch the birds flit around. Will be back later
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37am Itzall Hear:

Hey Handy! Quick question from a reader, maybe you know the answer? Who is responsible for the Dutch Kills Swing Bridge, MTA/LIRR or LIC Railways
Avatar 10:35am graphic_taco:

Good morning everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36am lukavino:

kick em while dey up
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38am Handy Haversack:

The operational one, Doug? I *think* it's MTA there since it goes into the construction yard. I can verify, though, by reaching out to Willis.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40am Doug in JC:

I should know this. It's owned by LIRR but exclusively leased by NY&A. I have to assume the (non-existant) maintenance is under LIRR. And I think they're referring to the one that's stuck in the closed position, the southernmost one
  10:40am Morphe’:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09am Itzall Hear:

Re; "Nov 3rd". Beautiful, languid summer music for the soul.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12am Handy Haversack:

Doug, did you ever see the NBBC Haunted Paddles on Halloween? That bridge always features prominently.

I didn't realize we were talking about the disused one -- if ANYONE takes responsibility, it would be the RR, but I bet it's just left to NYPD to keep those meddlesome kids off it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14am coelacanth∅:

a few years ago i went to my local post orifice to put in a good word for my usual mail carrier and they said i had to fill out a form. i said can't you just pass the compliment on to the management?
"sure i'll tell him"
  11:19am ami ad:

@coelcabtho:Yeah,seems like they are used to complaints only, and definitely trying to make things hard when you go there.Fun.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21am Handy Haversack:

Um, Doug, why did I not know about bridgesnyc?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21am Passaic River Blues:

Thanks John!
tchau y'all
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31am brainiac:

While reading that post about Harvey Matusow, I thought it must be Bill Brasky (SNL) style apocrypha.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33am Doug in JC:

@Handy, yeah, I remember pictures of that.

Bridgesnyc has been on hiatus for a while, unfortunately
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33am Krys O.:

A few years ago, I left a commendation about a NJ Transit bus driver and they actually contacted me to confirm my identity. When I've complained about problem drivers in the past, I get a standard form letter emailed response.
  11:34am morphe':

Handy- Doug - it is possible to walk the rails from Bush Terminal (65 St/4th ave Sunset Park)- to English Kills Brige/Newtown Creek.. Possible to have hassles with Cops/MTA approaching - around - leaving -B'Way Junction/Eastern Pkway... was never a problem before 9-11 but now ..
got accused of terrorism --- A good thing do do is go out to the Jamaica Bay Bird Sanctuary and get free cards claiming that you are a Voluntary Urban Ranger ... It worked for me and my friends I took to the rails ... they kicked us out of the tracks but no trespass/terrorism charges and no fines ... we said we were looking to photo wildlife!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37am Handy Haversack:

That's fantastic, morphe'!

Yeah, I have not tried walking subway tunnels (or the QMT!) since 9/11.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38am Doug in JC:

@Handy I had a good time running subway tunnels 2004-2013 or so
