This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

Avatar 7:44pm northguineahills:

can't believe I haven't heard that Mimaroglu. Thanks, Evan!

He quit Columbia once they enacted a smoking indoors band (he was a notorious chain-smoker).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:44pm chresti:

Live it up!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:44pm Gary:

Fuckin great
Avatar 7:44pm Flash Strap:

@NGH: of all the reasons! he is so incredible
Avatar 7:45pm Flash Strap:

this KIng Iwah just one of the most uplifting things i've ever heard
Avatar 7:46pm northguineahills:

Doug can answer this question, as anyone over the years interviewed Ilhan Mimaroglu at WFMU. I think I've would have heard of such.

I got my Turkish friend, who creates electro-acoutic micro house, into Mimaroglu.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:49pm chresti:

Good news about DACA
Avatar 7:50pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Sort of. 5-4 SCOTUS - on lawyerly grounds of incompetence. Said perhaps they laid out the way it ought to be submitted to get thru...altho' Drumpf probly won't have time the term, fwiw...
Avatar 7:51pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:56pm coelacanth∅:

greetings Evan and Explorers
Avatar 7:58pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Fecking love this song.
Avatar 7:58pm Flash Strap:

Hi Coelacanth!
Avatar 7:59pm Flash Strap:

me too rev
Avatar 8:00pm Flash Strap:

one of the finest and most out-there of Norman Whitfield's productions
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:00pm chresti:

This either a different version or sounds different through my ear buds, great.
Avatar 8:01pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Very MaggotBrain kinda feel of late...somehow...
Avatar 8:02pm Flash Strap:

@chresti: he previously produced a highly psychedelic 4-minute version for the Temptations; Whitfield often used Und. Truth to push those Temptations tracks even further
Avatar 8:02pm geezerette:

Been watching a collection of films on criterionchannel.com under heading 'Black Lives". Evan, your show tonight is musical equivalent. One more reason to love the island of sanity called WFMU.
Avatar 8:03pm Flash Strap:

Geezerette! wonderful to see you again my friend
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:04pm chresti:

You said it, geez!
Avatar 8:04pm geezerette:

Same! :)
Hey,all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:05pm coelacanth∅:

the temps' hit single was the first (new) 45 i ever bought with my own money
Avatar 8:05pm Flash Strap:

not sure of it's part of that collection specifically, but the Channel also just added a bunch of jazz age shorts that are incredible – the Louis Armstrong short "A Rhapsody in Black and Blue" is incredibly funky, highly recommended; predicts aspects of Funkadelic and Sun Ra in a very interesting way and features an outrageous performance from Armstrong
Avatar 8:05pm geezerette:

Hi, Chresti!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:06pm coelacanth∅:

hey geez!
Avatar 8:06pm northguineahills:

thanks, geezerette (i forgot they had a site).
Avatar 8:07pm TDK60:

Hello.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:07pm coelacanth∅:

rest in peace Bonnie Pointer
Avatar 8:08pm Flash Strap:

this Pointer Sisters album blew me away the first time I heard it, had no idea they went this hard; respect&love to listener Jay who recently inspired me to pull it out again
Avatar 8:09pm Flash Strap:

hello TDK! how goes
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:09pm chresti:

It must be that I've not listened via ear attachments, hearing a lot of bonus sounds compared to boombox speakers. @flash
Avatar 8:09pm Flash Strap:

god they're beyond incredible here
Avatar 8:11pm Flash Strap:

@chresti: good speakers / 'phones make such a huge difference, the legends are true
Avatar 8:12pm Flash Strap:

tho i must say many of my most sacred music experiences were on a portable tape player or shitty car stereo; they just weren't hi-fidelitous
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:12pm doctorjazz:

Man, if you just know the Pointer's hits...
Avatar 8:12pm geezerette:

Hiya, Coel!
NGH!
Evan@8:05, One of those shorts has Armstrong in a crazy "jungle" costume which is utterly erased by his brilliance.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:12pm chresti:

I like the Pointer's Neutron Dance.
Avatar 8:13pm Flash Strap:

@G: i thought of it more as an proto-afrofuturist thing - that whole set has huge arkestra vibes
Avatar 8:13pm just julia:

holy moly
Avatar 8:14pm Frog Mover:

@flash also worth noting that the dream world in the Louis Armstrong short is called Jazzmania!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:15pm chresti:

That's for sure, just julia
Avatar 8:15pm geezerette:

Saw the Pointer Sisters a lifetime ago at the Troubadour. Unforgettable.
Avatar 8:17pm jaywbabcock:

Just got here. What a playlist!
Avatar 8:18pm Flash Strap:

Hiya Jay - that Pointer Sisters was for you pal
Avatar 8:19pm Flash Strap:

Gloria Taylor's work with Walter Whisenhunt is so mystical and deep
Avatar 8:21pm geezerette:

@Evan: Good way of looking at it, but given historical context, usual unconscious racism.
Avatar 8:23pm geezerette:

Great music! What a playlist!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:23pm WR:

Great show Evan! Busy with work and eating take out tacos so not keeping up with the comments. Greetings all!
Avatar 8:25pm Flash Strap:

I think it was pretty flagrant racism on the part of the white production, yeah; on the other hand I feel like Armstrong was going for his own thing there and may have succeeded to a degree. it's pretty controversial
Avatar 8:25pm Flash Strap:

hi WR!
Avatar 8:26pm Flash Strap:

this one is MONSTROUS
  8:26pm Quinn:

Hello, I’m so glad to be here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:27pm chresti:

TDK60, did you watch any of the PSAs on the NY Attorney General website?
Avatar 8:27pm Flash Strap:

Hi Quinn! very glad to have you
Avatar 8:28pm TDK60:

Hi Chresti; do you mean public service announcements?
Avatar 8:28pm Flash Strap:

hadn't heard this ZZ Hill till a couple weeks ago & can't get this song out of my mind. what a funk attack
Avatar 8:29pm Flash Strap:

he also did an album with Swamp Dogg that I need to get more acquainted with
Avatar 8:29pm geezerette:

It's great!
Avatar 8:31pm Flash Strap:

"this world infested with boys" is such a line
Avatar 8:32pm Flash Strap:

Clinton in really fine voice here. sounding SO young
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:33pm chresti:

hello
Avatar 8:34pm TDK60:

No, Chresti but I just finished watching hours of testimony; yesterday too.
Avatar 8:34pm Flash Strap:

Hello beloved Uncle
Avatar 8:35pm Flash Strap:

Speaking of being in fine voice: Cooke is so perfect here. Perfection
Avatar 8:36pm northguineahills:

@Evan: (when is he not?) Hadn't heard his version of this....
Avatar 8:37pm Flash Strap:

when is he not indeed. voice of an angel, flawless execution every time
Avatar 8:37pm Frog Mover:

Oh this legend!
Avatar 8:39pm just julia:

bless that scream
Avatar 8:39pm Flash Strap:

@frog, JJ: apocalyptically good performance from the one & only Baby, devastating and chaotic
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:41pm Uncle Michael:

I love that Curtis could produce a record and have it not sound like a Curtis record.
Avatar 8:41pm Flash Strap:

this version has made it hard to fully commit to other, more measured & respectful renditions. It's just pure power
Avatar 8:42pm Flash Strap:

@UM: I agree – you can tell what a big difference he made as far as making this record work but it really doesn't sound like any other Curtis records I know
Avatar 8:43pm Flash Strap:

the monologue.... my god
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:43pm chresti:

Watching the hour testimony reminded me that I might want to to learn sign language soon, TDK60
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:44pm passiflora:

I've been enjoying this very much
Avatar 8:45pm Flash Strap:

hi passiflora! me too my friend
Avatar 8:47pm TDK60:

..would be good to learn, must not be easy.
Avatar 8:47pm northguineahills:

wow, a Curtis prod (sounds like it).

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:55pm chresti:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:55pm WR:

I'll take a shot from that fifth.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:56pm Franco Twinkie:

Geezer!!! I miss you.

Avatar 8:58pm geezerette:

Avatar 9:03pm Flash Strap:

possibly Dillinger's first recording as Dillinger - very early
Avatar 9:04pm Flash Strap:

Lee Perry gave him the name, in fact, iirc
Avatar 9:09pm TDK60:

Franco, I had pancakes for dinner.
Avatar 9:10pm Flash Strap:

these are some very early dub albums here
Avatar 9:14pm Flash Strap:

Ras Michael's records always have nicely featured guitar, something I really appreciate in his productions
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15pm Franco Twinkie:

Pancakes! With toppings?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16pm chresti:

I love this top rankin set, Flash.
Avatar 9:16pm TDK60:

Yeh, organic maple syrup, bananas, raspberries. Buckwheat.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18pm Franco Twinkie:

I think I would have preferred that to sushi.
Avatar 9:20pm TDK60:

Great tracks Flash. / Yeh, every once in a while I have breakfast for dinner!
Avatar 9:20pm Flash Strap:

thanks Chresti, TDK!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22pm Uncle Michael:

save me and Gary a little reggae, man!
Avatar 9:23pm Flash Strap:

I'll try! fumbling desperately as I attempt to not use up all the reggae
Avatar 9:23pm TDK60:

What great punchy bass on this Creation Rebel.
Avatar 9:24pm Flash Strap:

is your reggae show tomorrow, UM? i've lost track of the schedule
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24pm chresti:

There's plenty to go around, UM.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24pm Uncle Michael:

yep!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25pm coelacanth∅:

there are 3 more vats in the cellar, if you can break into it
Avatar 9:25pm Flash Strap:

@UM: damn that'll be a treat!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25pm chresti:

An all day dance party tomorrow!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26pm Uncle Michael:

was this ROIR release originally cassette only?
Avatar 9:27pm Flash Strap:

i believe so, yeah - is this a whopping 7-hour show you're about to do? heroic
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27pm Uncle Michael:

yessir...let's not mistake recklessness for heroism
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28pm coelacanth∅:

you're adding the voices Evan? there are no voices on my version, everything else identical, so far
Avatar 9:28pm TDK60:

U.M. Yeh ROIR was all tapes then. Early Bad Brains LP.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28pm Uncle Michael:

Coel said "version" heh
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28pm chresti:

Lee Perry, I've only scratched the surface, there's so much more.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29pm Little Danny:

Wow
Avatar 9:29pm burke:

Rimshot!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29pm Uncle Michael:

Scratch's new album is great!
Avatar 9:30pm Flash Strap:

@C; no they're on my version
Avatar 9:30pm Flash Strap:

which one, UM? is that Life of Plants?
Avatar 9:30pm Flash Strap:

hi Burke!
Avatar 9:31pm Flash Strap:

this whole Trinity LP is as fine an album as can exist
Avatar 9:31pm Flash Strap:

@chresti: it's endless
Avatar 9:32pm TDK60:

You're unleashing them tonight Flash.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32pm Uncle Michael:

Rainford, from last year
  9:33pm CC:

Experience the experience!!!
Avatar 9:33pm Flash Strap:

that one is great! I think he has a new one since then too
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34pm Uncle Michael:

looks like it
Avatar 9:34pm Flash Strap:

Life of Plants produced by Peaking Lights - very interesting experiment
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35pm coelacanth∅:

weird. the track was identical otherwise. it's on an unmarked cd the person made it for me said was from a cassette and when the web came i tracked it down to the album "Lee "scratch" Perry meets Bullwackie".
...no voices.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36pm Ike:

This is cool.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36pm Uncle Michael:

Thousands of Jamaican records had the instrumental track on the flip...the "version"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37pm coelacanth∅:

of course. just the rest of the track listing matched that album.
Avatar 9:37pm Flash Strap:

@C: that seems pretty likely, dub often varies from release to release, they could have either added or subtracted those voices for a subsequent issuance
Avatar 9:37pm Flash Strap:

Hi Ike!
  9:37pm CC:

I can hear words in my head!!!...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38pm coelacanth∅:

(...it still has the singing, just not the sample of a newscaster's voice, or whatever that was)
Avatar 9:38pm TDK60:

What a classic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39pm coelacanth∅:

Flash @9.37 you're right. probably just a different issue.
Avatar 9:39pm Frog Mover:
