  9:08am Rick A.:

This song also begins the concept album An American Prayer which I bought when I was 11, hoping for something like Light My Fire. I was disappointed and never made it through the entire album. I was 11.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:08am tom from Glasgow:

why'd you fill your telly up with lizards?
Avatar 9:08am Joe McG:

@Ashville Jon: Don't worry, Jon, it's only 17 minutes long!
Avatar 9:08am Snoochienucci:

howdy DIL!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:08am YETI BOB:

ok... i'm going to ride this one out, but i'm reducing the volume somewhat until Jimmy stops screaming
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:08am The Oscar:

Mornin'! The funny thing about the Doors is that, over the past fifty years, they have only ever been overrated or underrated, and they go back and forth between the two every decade or so.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:08am Krys O.:

Viva Le Doors! (via Bruce McCullough)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09am David (in London):

Tom, I didn't. It was Mr Lizard.
Avatar 9:09am peckinpah:

Okay. Quick quiz: who's playing bass? Hmm? No bass. That's right, the Doors had no bass. You see, the gypsies had no homes. Don't let that scare you, let that free you. Let that liberate you. 'Cause when you're free-flying with the Doors, man, you don't need no safety net
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09am PaulRobeson1920:

Yeti- I turned it high as it will go
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09am Krys O.:

Exactly, peckinpah!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11am Handy Haversack:

He nails the science too.

Hey, David, Snoochie, Jennica, Marley, JeffinC, everyone.

Sanitizing the station, Joe?
  9:11am winston legthigh:

thats so true @the oscar
  9:11am Peter from Dover NJ:

Hello Joe McG and everyone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11am Krys O.:

Wm Berger and I used to play The Doors back in the 80s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11am YETI BOB:

@pecinpah: No band without a bass has ever been any good. (And if you want, you can say that's a bassless allegation!)

@joe: thanks for announcing the track length, that is useful information
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11am Asheville Jon:

i'm right there with ya YETI BOB.
used to really be into the doors, but now, kinda meh on all of that
Avatar 9:11am Roberto:

I thought this was Bruce McCulloch at first.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12am sphere:

hullo. after hearing Howlin Wolf's version of Back Door Man, I could never take Jim Morrison seriously.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12am Krys O.:

@YetiBob: Bruce McCullough did a great sketch on Kinds in the Hall called Doors Fan. It's on his Shame Based Man cd too.
Avatar 9:12am Jennica:

@Handy: hi there!! @Asheville Jon: me too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12am YETI BOB:

It's just a bit early in the morning for all the screaming.... wife and neighbors are still sleeping
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12am Krys O.:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13am Michele with One "L":

Oh hell yes!!!!!!
Avatar 9:13am Marc Francis:

I forgot how emo the Doors were.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13am David (in London):

Yeti Bob - The Cramps did pretty well without a bass IMHO.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13am Marley P. Dogg:

Can I request all 27 minutes of In-a-gadda-da-vida for the next song?
Avatar 9:14am Joe McG:

It's really a shame that they never finished this work in progress. Who knows what it might have become?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14am sphere:

ride the snake, right?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14am Crudbringer:

...When I first switched the radio on, I was pretty sure Michele was filling in...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15am Hughie Considine:

I love Surface Noise but this is testing me.
Avatar 9:15am TDK60:

Morning Joe. I love the Doors, saw them once and they were excellent!
Avatar 9:15am Joe McG:

@Hughie: Don't worry, I have some Starz coming up later. Seriously!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15am Asheville Jon:

anyone interested in a large usps flat rate box full of doors casettes? bootlegs, radio broadcats, etc?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15am David (in London):

Three large portions of Crud please.

Hey TDK.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16am sphere:

The Lizard King Desperately Wants To Be Really, Really Meaningful And Significant.
Avatar 9:16am Joe McG:

@TDK: That's so cool! I wish I'd seen them. All the parts you're supposed to see, anyway.
  9:17am LP Stevenson:

You mean it might have been good, Joe?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17am Krys O.:

@TDK60: One of my sisters saw The Doors at her college. Jimi too. She went to SUNY at Stony Brook 67-70.
Avatar 9:17am TDK60:

Joe, it was at Hunter College auditorium, 1968. Jim was disciplined, no silliness.
Avatar 9:17am Joe McG:

@LP: I think J-Mo is one of rock's great comedians.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17am YETI BOB:

@D(iL): I do love the Cramps. So I'll back down from my bassless accuation. But I think most "we don't have a bass player" bands would sound better with a bass. Like the time the bass player from Redd Cross added bass parts to the White Stripes ("Red Blood Cells"). Major improvment IMO. But then again I play bass so I'm biased in that direction.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18am Handy Haversack:

9:18 -- right on time!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18am Krys O.:

I believe the Doors played at the Capitol in my hometown of Port Chester too. Not 100% sure though.
Avatar 9:19am Joe McG:

Oh by the way, this first set is going to get A LOT worse.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19am Handy Haversack:

I spoke too soon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19am PaulRobeson1920:

They played SUNY Oswego in 1967!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19am Asheville Jon:

bleh, off to the drummer stream until this is over
Avatar 9:19am Roberto:

John Densmore was in my improv class in '88-'89. He wrote and performed a one-person work in which he played drums.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19am Hughie Considine:

Thanks for the warning @Joe. That's why we keep coming back: the honesty!
Avatar 9:20am Snoochienucci:

I saw Ray+Robby once a few years back. It was maybe a year or so before Ray passed. They were both fantastic. Ray had great energy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20am Jim the Poet:

Play it again!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20am Ken From Hyde Park:

It's cool, Joe. We're Surface Noisers and we can take it!
Avatar 9:20am Joe McG:

@Jim: Ha ha ha!
Avatar 9:20am TDK60:

Hello Krys O, David in London.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20am PaulRobeson1920:

Again again!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20am WoodsOfNH:

WTF?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21am David (in London):

Yeti Bob - Yeah, to be fair, Lux 'n' Ivy are probably the exception rather than the rule, and I tend to agree with you. Bass in the face. Are you aware of the first (i.e. late 90s / early 00s) version of Rothko? Just three bass guitars. Full Disclosure, they were friends of mine, but at that time were absolutely awesome bass power.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21am Crudbringer:

Okay, is *this* the low point or does it worse than *this*?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21am melinda:

Morning everyone!
Avatar 9:21am Rev. Turnip Druid:

always have been absolutely, totally ambivalent about The Doors, BUT mister lizard man earned points for pronouncing the "T" in "listening" just there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21am Colleen:

Omg....Joe...YOU ARE ON FIRE TODAY!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21am Marley P. Dogg:

Uh oh - did Dylan die?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21am pantz:

Xmas music? Did you take your meds, Joe?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21am Matt Fiveash:

Joe you sick bastard
Avatar 9:21am Jeezuseffinchrist:

what in the name of the Goat is happening?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21am Handy Haversack:

Can you *really* celebrate the lizard in under three hours?

Also: this Dylan version got much more of a "WTF?" from Kate than the Doors.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21am Asheville Jon:

this dylan is way better than the morrison drivel
Avatar 9:21am TDK60:

Joe, I like Bob Dylan but I don't like every song he's recorded. Some are great, some very good, some so-so. But I hope no one loses sleep over an opinion on it...
  9:21am Mick:

Ok that got an authentic laugh. Did not see that coming
  9:22am Rick A.:

Dylan joined a long and storied tradition of Jewish singers and songwriters writing and performing Christmas music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22am PaulRobeson1920:

Interesting aside here -Jim Morrison would be the same age as Joe Biden...who is 7 days older than Jimi Hendrix wOuld be... A MAN CAN DREAM
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22am The Oscar:

Oh holy crap. Going ahead and clickystarring this show in advance.
Swag For Life Member 9:22am 12539:

Hey whoever's in the dj booth, WHAT HAVE YOU DONE WITH JOE?!?
  9:22am BVP:

Shit I’ve gotta get to the mall. I hate the mall.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22am efd:

thought maybe this was Little Steven for a moment.
  9:22am The Butterman:

Now I feel like I’m listening to SMK
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22am Marley P. Dogg:

Really curious what’s next
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22am Itzall Hear:

Froggy went-a-courtin' and he did ride, aha, with Silver Bells and the like.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22am Asheville Jon:

at least Joe didn't play dylan's "Must Be Santa"!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22am Handy Haversack:

2009 -- so timely. He really had his finger on the cultural pulse. Always relevant, Bob.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22am Jim the Poet:

Call the kids. This show is going to be a classic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22am lukavino:

oooh, do "must be santa" next. that song rips.
Avatar 9:22am TDK60:

It might just be possible that our DJ is having some lighthearted fun. Okay?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23am David (in London):

Can't wait for Dylan's version of 'Little Donkey'.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23am melinda:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24am Bob in Oakland:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24am Itzall Hear:

Avatar 9:25am Rev. Turnip Druid:

eh! Had no idea Rothko went back that far.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25am Handy Haversack:

How did Michael Shelley resist playing this around the interview he did this weekend?

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27am Asheville Jon:

Joe, i thought you said this was going to get worse? this stuff (aside from the morrison nonsense) is great!
Swag For Life Member 9:28am bk845:

I can't believe that anyone thought creating that Smart Girls song was a good idea, even in the context of 1991.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28am Handy Haversack:

Sweet Lou! Definitely giving Dylan a run for that troll title!
Avatar 9:28am Rich in Bay Ridge:

OK, this is already a certifiable classic 4 songs in.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28am lukavino:

listening to this while thinking about Lou tearing his own face off in the "no money down" video.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28am Hughie Considine:

You would think given Lou's tendency toward sprechgesang that he'd be a better than average rapper...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29am The Oscar:

@lukavino If you haven't, you should seek out the Beavis & Butthead clip with that video. "This guy should be in Gwar!!"
Avatar 9:29am Joe McG:

It was a hard choice between this and "Disco Mystic."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29am YETI BOB:

This is almost as bad as Debbie Harry's rap on "Rapture"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29am Hughie Considine:

People tend to trash "Mistrial," but I'm fond of "I Remember You," his duet with Ruben Blades.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29am lukavino:

@the oscar a stone classic.
  9:29am dano59:

Agreed it could only get better after the Morrison Nonsense. Xmas in June!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29am Handy Haversack:

If Lou and Brian can leave their comfort zones, so can we. Joe shows us the way.
  9:30am Rick A.:

In playing the more eccentric and atypical work by famous singer/songwriters, there is always Elvis Costello's Juliet Letters.
  9:30am Blix:

I remember that Ken played some Ron Isley rap on the air one day, figuring that, well, it can't be that bad. Wacky sax came in about halfway through.
Avatar 9:30am Brian in UK:

Hey Joe

I believe the burger king was described as lewd, lascivious and wanton at the Miami fiasco.
  9:30am Terr in DE:

wow, this ones real,...sort of Talking Heads
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31am YETI BOB:

@HH: But there are so many different directions out of the comfort zone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31am Handy Haversack:

(Though at any point did Lou think to himself "you know what could help sell this? Disco!")
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31am Crudbringer:

@Howie, it's like how (that actor whose name I can't summon) couldn't *play* drunk when he *was* drunk... Lou can't hit the target when he's *aiming* at it.
  9:31am Toothgrinder Tom:

Did Sebastian Cabot pass on before the advent of rap?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31am The Oscar:

I feel as if a track from Bruce Foxton's solo LP can't be far behind ...
  9:32am Bill W:

I have an autographed copy of MISTRIAL... and Lou actually made civil small talk while he was signing it for me (at Tower Records on 4th Street).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32am listener Rey:

LOL. It's gotten much worse alright!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32am Greg from ZONE 5:

We haven't talked in a while, Joe. You been feelin' OK?
  9:33am Toothgrinder Tom:

@Crudbringer are you talking about Peter O’Toole, or possibly Richard Burton?
  9:33am sydnius:

That’s how Wiggles are born

I bought this album when it came out. It's an elegy to Kurt Cobain and contains mostly quiet ambient types of songs. This is the lone outlier of a rock song on it, almost as if he threw it on here because there needed to be one rock song. I never really grew to appreciate this album, either.

If this is supposed to be "bad" - it's failing. Not Miles' greatest work, but still worthy. And good on him for mining contemporary pop, the way jazz did in the 30s.

Hello everyone
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44am Mike Sin:

This Miles Davis track had to be used in a "Lifetime" movie at some point, no?
  9:44am Rick A.:

I once played this on my college radio show in 1987. I wanted to play a contemporary Miles Davis track and liked the name of the album. I didn't notice the title of the song. As soon as I played it on the air, I realized, "Oh, it's that song." Former WFMU DJ Jeff Cobb was in the studio with me and calmed my panic, by saying "It's still Miles."

For what it's worth, I have to object strongly to the inclusion of Miles Davis's "Time After Time" in that set. Granted, it's not Miles at his best, but come on -- it is FAR from Miles at his worst. It's actually kind of pretty, and he still had his chops at the time. Some of his subsequent stuff was, in my humble opinion, much, much worse.

Hey Joe! Could you give a birthday shout out to my boyfriend Sage? He's been an FMU listener since he was a kid and he loves your show :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17am sphere:

Da Feet!
Avatar 11:17am TDK60:

Wow, Little Feat, great band I don't hear much anymore.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18am sphere:

Dixie Chicken is a really really good album.
Avatar 11:18am Davee:

I second that comment
Avatar 11:19am Joe McG:

Not only does Fat Man In The Bathroom have the best song title in the world, it is one my all time faves.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21am Itzall Hear:

Haha. Maybe, but there are definitely similarities to MY ear... eh? Whatzat?!? Can you speak up, please?...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21am sphere:

*Bathtub i mean.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22am WoodsOfNH:

I have spent many, many, many, many hours listening to Waiting For Columbus
Avatar 11:24am Joe McG:

This Chico Hamilton record is basically Little Feat with Chico sitting in on drums.
  11:24am ?:

> Wondering if Prince ever did anything truly
> terrible....

Ever hear the "Chaos and Disorder" slbum?
  11:25am Dean:

One of the engineers of Waiting for Columbus has a stereo shop four blocks from my home. I brought my Mobile Fidelity pressing to the shop. We listened, and he remarked, "This sounds really good!" Hanging on the wall in his shop, the original painting, subsequently retouched here and there, that graces the album cover.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25am Handy Haversack:

Digging all these Little Feats! Hadn't listened to them in along time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27am WO Town Wick:

Not sure I've heard any Chico Hamilton before but now I have the urge to hear lots more. Thanks JM.
Avatar 11:27am Joe McG:

@Dean: Wow!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27am Handy Haversack:

* al ong.

^^

Sigh. One of *those* days.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28am sphere:

I know the feeling, Handy.
  11:28am Dean:

Nice guy. He also engineered the first two Boston albums, some Earth, Wind & Fire, a bunch of other stuff. His first job: Hendrix.
Avatar 11:29am TDK60:

WO Town Wick: When he (C.H.) earlier came out with his own band, it was mellow West Coast "cool" jazz.

Avatar 11:29am Joe McG:

@WO TW: Chico is a favorite of mine since his group in the '60s had Gabor Szabo in it. The "Transfusion" album is especially great.
Avatar 11:30am oshiwoshi:

LOVING this slide selection - best version of On your way down!
(not 2 trains btw...)
Avatar 11:31am TonyR:

>In Bowie's defense, he was afraid of >Americans

So ahead of the curve, that one.
Avatar 11:31am TDK60:

The album cover photo to this Ry C. has that '30s/'40s feel.

  11:35am Brendan:

Does this play in the WFMU elevator?
Avatar 11:35am TonyR:

There's that "All Together Now" ad for that tele-conferencing software. Interesting choice, gotta give Mr. Advertising Man that, at least.
Avatar 11:36am Joe McG:

Thanks, Mary! Hope to visit Lisbon one day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36am WoodsOfNH:

Holy smokes, Supreme Court droppin' BOMBs today.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37am Handy Haversack:

@Joe B, it was making them crazy.
Avatar 11:39am Joe McG:

Fun Fact: Steve Cropper had never heard "Abbey Road" when he recorded his guitar for this album. Booker coached him through it. He was somewhere else recording a band called Ambergris - who I played a few weeks ago!
Avatar 11:39am Joe B:

@handy - ha good one! i know it makes me crazy. bad crazy
  11:40am Dennis Diken:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41am Handy Haversack:

Come back to the music, @TonyR!
Avatar 11:41am jt:

WoodsOfNH yes, good news (finally some good news) but what about the three(?) that did NOT support incl. Judge Gerard E. Lynch? Ugh.
Avatar 11:41am Joe McG:

Hey Dennis! Al Jackson, right?
Avatar 11:42am jt:

The Beatles could've learned something from Booker T. & the MGs ..organ solo! Wow.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45am WoodsOfNH:

@jt Yeah, kind of disgusting but not surprising.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46am Handy Haversack:

It seems to have soothed the savage breast, this one -- two squirrels, a starling, and some sparrows have decided to come out into the open.
Avatar 11:46am Kay:

@jt: The Beatles did learn something...they learnt they should hire Billy Preston for organ. Here's the isolated organ solo: www.youtube.com...
Avatar 11:47am Joe McG:

@JoeB: What a terrible waste to lose him so young.
Avatar 11:48am Kay:

Yes, R.I.P. Billy Preston
