Options June 16, 2020: You Can Sample: Wave Four - A Worldwide Medley

Is that all there is? Well... if that's all there is my friends, well let's start sampling!

Over the past three decades I have been sampling for music projects. From recording to cassettes... to saving on floppy to zips... to organizing on the hard drive. Today we are going to hear those samples back-to-back for 4 hours.

This is the fourth and final installment of 2,800 sounds. Soon, I will upload all individual samples from the You Can Sample shows (+ more) for anyone to download. It's fun to share. Tune in later this year as I'll mention the link and pass it about when all is available or just visit mtlmofo.com in time.

Some quick notes on the process of collecting samples:
- In Windows 10, searched all sample folders for *.wav
- Used a tiny program, 'Bulk Rename Utility' to randomize the order of files and apply a number prefix (00000)
- Selected blocks of files in the folder (in 4 hour sets for future shows)
- Open Appended Files in Adobe Audition (and took a screenshot that appears below)
- Used another tiny program, 'JR Directory Printer' to print the directory contents of the files in the folder to a text file.

Listening to this live for the first time today, with you on the show! It's all random and I'm sure we will hear some funny bits colliding with one another.

You Can Sample (previous shows):
- Wave One : August 25, 2019
- Wave Two : November 10, 2019
- Wave Three : February 4, 2020

Good day, Otis!
Avatar 11:07am Otis Fodder:

Top of the morning, welcome to cacophony today.
Avatar 11:08am StringOFperils:

I was listening to You Can Sample #1 from last August earlier for about an hour...iI found it strange that it didn't drive me crazy. Why are random cues so much like music? What has happened to how I hear music?
Avatar 11:09am Otis Fodder:

All randomly sequenced... so often we get funny stuff like Gas followed by Testicles.
Avatar 11:09am Cp304:

Ain’t it grand
Avatar 11:12am Cp304:

Unexpected and heavy hitter did many series of these titled look what I found back in the rap mullet days.. great stuff. I’ll have to up them for yous sometime

Thank ya RawV!
Avatar 11:21am Cp304:

Speaking of sampling.. pioneer has a promising looking device launched recently.. will make it hard to decide if that or the mc707 will be my next toy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23am solo mon:

Gmorning samplers!
Avatar 11:24am Otis Fodder:

@Cp - Nice, I'm still so computer based here. Running Live since 2002 and before ACID and before Making Waves (old tracker little program). Last outboard gear I had was a Roland S-10 sampler in the early 90s before trying out tracker programs around 1995. But I do think often about setting up an outboard/gear studio when I get back into making tracks again.
Avatar 11:24am Otis Fodder:

Morning Solo!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25am Hopey Sockmonkey:

Somehow I am not familiar with this project, Otis. Going to have to go back to the archives and catch up after today's show!

Silly stuff Hopey, ha!

I’m in short attention span heaven.
Avatar 11:28am rawvegetable:

Sampling the sample show
Avatar 11:30am Otis Fodder:

This summer I will upload all 4 complete WAV files + all individual samples zipped up in the folders like you see in the playlist image below. Hopefully will hear what others make of what is uploaded. Maybe a comp can come out of it or something. Who knows, but so many sounds that I'll never use and so many even if I have used, they will be used in other ways. Sharing, yah!
Avatar 11:31am Otis Fodder:

Hi Sonderangebot. Hey everyone, Listener Sonderangebot will be my guest on the show in 2 weeks spinning vinyl gems.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31am solo mon:

I would be so down to interpret some of these!!!
Avatar 11:32am Otis Fodder:

Solo... you will have all sounds.... oh yesssss.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32am solo mon:

There was that Bob crewe guitar sound!
Avatar 11:33am Otis Fodder:

Oh, Bob is in there. I'm a huge fan of 60s and 70s Crewe.... especially his disco 70s period.
Avatar 11:34am rawvegetable:

More R. Stevie Moore!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34am solo mon:

I don’t know much of the 70s stuff? I have barbarella and music to watch girls/ birds and that’s it. But I do love the sound! Turn me on Otis:-)
Avatar 11:35am Otis Fodder:

Robert Steven Moore makes many appearances. Need to throw in cut up stems from the songs we worked on as well into the sample set when I upload.
Avatar 11:35am Otis Fodder:

@Solo - a fav - www.youtube.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35am solo mon:

This tango is gettin some space
Avatar 11:35am StringOFperils:

@Otis: It would be nice to have this on WAV files.
Avatar 11:36am Otis Fodder:

I know! Some samples I really let run long.. but they loop!
Avatar 11:36am Otis Fodder:

This tango is taking 4ever!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37am solo mon:

Otis omg how have I never heard ménage a by Bob crewe ?!?!?!
Avatar 11:37am Otis Fodder:

The 12" version has this huge drum break intro.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37am solo mon:

I was gonna say they are all edited perfectly
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38am solo mon:

I like this moaning and sighing - it’s an under appreciated vocal art.
Avatar 11:39am Otis Fodder:

Loops are all set to throw in. Thinking I'll include all .asd files for Live users as the loop points are all set on all loops.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39am solo mon:

Yes! I’m a live user :-)
Avatar 11:39am Otis Fodder:

But even oneshots are set with .asd files too... so the loop is off.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40am solo mon:

Avatar 11:40am Otis Fodder:

I'll include those when I upload the zip. Figure any non-live users can just search all *.asd files and remove.
Avatar 11:41am Otis Fodder:

Will be easy for anyone producing in live to just throw in the sample in and loop points are set (for Live 9 and up).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41am solo mon:

Fun these are all fabulous and evocative - great job!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42am solo mon:

Omg the shaggs own thing drums

Sampling by candlelight. One cowbell.
Avatar 11:46am Otis Fodder:

All the 'bran flakes' vox samples were taken in 2001-2002 from WFMU DJs playing the bran flakes. I heard Ken F in there twice now.
Avatar 11:46am Sonderangebot:

This is strangely satisfying for the compulsive radio/tv channel flipper that I used to be! Ah
Avatar 11:46am Sonderangebot:

Oh yes solo mon, Otis is so nice to welcome me as a guest!
Avatar 11:47am Otis Fodder:

Avatar 11:47am Otis Fodder:

Well, Sond... you do have THE German Mrs Miller, that I had never heard of before. That sealed the deal! Oh wow.
Avatar 11:53am Cp304:

@ Otis, the hardware these days is pretty impressive.. look forward to your future producing, and the wav uploads..
Avatar 11:54am Cp304:

Sorry I’m in and out of the chat
Avatar 11:55am Otis Fodder:

I was just in/out of chat too... doing laundry. Relaxing DJ duties here today, get to listen rather than juggling vinyl. It's nicccceeeeee.
Avatar 11:58am Otis Fodder:

A lot of the spoken samples you might also hear in the Sheena stream as I sent a big zip file to Mr Fab last year so they pop up in-between tracks sometimes. Funny juxtapositions.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:59am joe:

Ok I lost my place anybody know where we are on the list? (jsut kidding)
Avatar 11:59am Otis Fodder:

3 hours to go!

Avatar 12:24pm BC Sterrett:

Did you say there was another Bran Flakes project in the works?
Avatar 12:25pm Otis Fodder:

No, nothing at the moment BC. Mildred did release a single online a few weeks back. He may release more, I'm taking a short break until inspiration hits again.
Avatar 12:26pm BC Sterrett:

Where can I find his single?
Avatar 12:26pm Otis Fodder:

check out our site at thebranflakes.com
Avatar 12:26pm Cp304:

It’s weird how the inspiration thing goes in production
Avatar 12:29pm Otis Fodder:

Totally. Listening at the moment. Had these breaks before, wait for when it feels right. In my 20s I was non-stop but when I hit my 30s it was way more off/on depending on when it felt exciting to do. Haven't made anything since late 2017... but I did do one track for Martinibomb and another for the Mind Control Premium WFMU tape.
Avatar 12:30pm Otis Fodder:

For those last two.. it was like, wow... super excited... music making time, yay. Waiting for that feeling again. I have cat grass to grow for my kitties and couch time with my gal and movies.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:44pm Hopey Sockmonkey:

@mmz - Used the program bulk rename utility to randomize all files and after assigned 00000 numbers to the start of the filename.. then just loaded them into the wave editor back-to-back.
Avatar 2:06pm Otis Fodder:

The full file was 16 hours. Split into 4 parts, 4 hours each.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:06pm solo mon:

Mama why are you cryin, is there another cave in?
  2:06pm mmz:

yes i read the instruction thank you. i's wondering every track played at 1"00 into the song? also the duration of playback seemed random too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:07pm solo mon:

Moishe! LOL
Avatar 2:07pm Otis Fodder:

All files are pre-looped or one-shots and vary in length. Edited and then after set with loop points in Abelton Live. Is that what you were wondering?
  2:09pm Martinibomb:

can't wait to run this entire file thru that ezstems and see what it spits out
  2:10pm mmz:

eh ha. thanks. prep'd!
Avatar 2:10pm Otis Fodder:

HA! I just need to go through and sort and add to the folders and after zip up all individual samples for download + will upload the 4 hour files as well. Hope to have that all up next month.
  2:11pm mmz:

please include your chat in it too. that'd be fun too!
Avatar 2:11pm Otis Fodder:

Oh yes, sorry mmz... just realized I didn't preface that in the notes. They are all totally prepped for production, with loop points set to be used in both live jams/shows and in studio. :)
Avatar 2:12pm Otis Fodder:

mmz... great idea... full notes on the site page + will link to the full chat rooms on the 4 shows.. but also highlight chat messages. thanks much!

This metronome fella... on a reels irish dance record. I figure his uhhhhhs are all very slightly different and live so why not put it on in case someone wanted to make the UHH song.
  2:13pm mmz:

another way would be load random numbers to read the first three digits are the track# then the last digit as the seconds to playback.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:13pm solo mon:

I love how much time that metronome got
