Good morning, Emily & skeleton help. Welcome to overnights.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:39am
coelacanth∅:

hey Emily at first i thought it was the source material but now i know there's something funky going on with your set-up. the sound is lacking in bass and in fullness. the sound is kind of like if a single microphone was placed in front of a transistor radio!
'works okay for the gamelan but not not everything else.
thought you'd like to know.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:45am
Emily L:

Thnx! Attempting to fix
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:48am
coelacanth∅:

i know about nothing about your set up but it reminds me of a phase-reversal type of situation -like part of the signal is being cancelled-out or something.
(i know this probably doesn't help!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:48am
coelacanth∅:

(liking your selections, for what it's worth!)

Guillermo:

Great show!! love the selections. listening from Barcelona

David in London:

Loving the show this morning Emily. Agree the signal is a little thin, but I’m sure that can be ironed out.

Hey Coelacanth.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:55am
Emily L:

Thanks! Major thanks for listening (and for your help!)

Stanley:

Hi Emily.
Good morning David.
The sound is like the 'secret' transistor listening under my pillow as a teenager.
  4:00am
tortilladc:

kinda sounds like when you've got headphones on but haven't fully inserted the plug.
  4:03am
David in London:

Hey Stanley. Hoping the parents won’t hear and come in...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:04am
coelacanth∅:

hey David
...i like that Stanley. i was thinking the sound is like when i clandestinely recorded from my brother's 1/2 decent stereo with a panasonic lecture recorder, and played it back on same.
...and i'm thinking how happy i was to have that when i was little.

i'm so spoiled.
  4:08am
dano59:

I am loving the nostalgic references to the sound, fwiw -- having some radio-from-home tech difficulties myself ...
  4:11am
dano59:

... not that that's the issue, but can anyone assist me offline sometime with Audacity or mixer/gear expertise?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:12am
Stanley:

Absolutely, David. Night time Radio Luxemburg was strictly verboten.
coel - a sign of how much we must have dug music as children. A bit like you, I recorded music with a microphone from the tv onto my father's reel-to-reel.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:14am
Stanley:

dano59 - for my Lockdown Project I thought I'd get to grips with Audacity. Unfortunately, I was defeated.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:16am
coelacanth∅:

i'd gladly help if i knew the first thing about audacity.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:18am
coelacanth∅:

Stanley yes i think you're right.
and, a reel to reel! wish my father had gotten into those.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:21am
Stanley:

On Sundays my old man used to record songs off the radio. We'd be eating lunch and every now again he'd leap from the table make a mad dash to press the play+record buttons, then three minutes later try to catch the fade before the presenter chimed in. He really only did it to play background music at the soirees they had.
  4:21am
dano59:

Thx i'll keep asking. I am among the easily frustrated ... Been recording off the TV since oh 1970...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:24am
Emily L:

Brilliant, Stanley!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:29am
coelacanth∅:

haha, sounds like me. the first thing i bought after getting a job in high school was a good cassette recorder. had it for around 20 years and for all of that time i kept it in standby mode when i wasn't playing or recording, radio tuned to wfmu!
  4:31am
David in London:

Stanley. Do you remember any of the songs he recorded?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:31am
coelacanth∅:

but when i was little i used to get annoyed that the djs would always talk over the beginning, end and sometimes in the middle of songs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:33am
coelacanth∅:

...and dano do you still have those tapes?
  4:33am
dano59:

coel ... you mean like Todd, talking over - that is still a pet peeve
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:37am
coelacanth∅:

haha maybe! at some point i decided they did it specifically to foil home tapers... but i guess sometimes there're other reasons!
  4:38am
David in London:

‘Home taping is killing music.’
  4:42am
dano59:

coel- sadly no, had a lil 3-
In reel to reel deck then cassette pressed up to the 2-in TV speaker. I rem taping Elton John and some Midnight Special off the TV,
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:42am
coelacanth∅:

when i think now about Cousin Brucie or Dan Ingram making silly noises over the entirety of spill the wine or gimme dat ding or even we've only just begun i have a good laugh though. i have doubts that anyone on commercial radio does that now. they're too busy being full of shit
  4:43am
dano59:

... and still have a NatLamp Radio Hour ca. 1974 that hasn't been released - High School Confidential
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:44am
coelacanth∅:

wow that's pretty cool. a collector item maybe?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:45am
Stanley:

David - there were some stand outs, I remember. Songs, which I thought back then were terrible but now really enjoy (yikes!). He liked The Beatles but I remember Shirley Bassey, Harry Belafonte, Dusty, Lulu etc. and a song that I recalled on Bill Mac's show some years back that went 'Please don't sell my Daddy no more wine, no more wine', which I thought was forever condemned to wander the caverns of my memory but the guy went and found it! wfmu.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:47am
coelacanth∅:

hopefully we'll be blessed with Bill Mac fill-ins again one day
  4:47am
dano59:

After that (and discovering drugs and girls) my earluest tapes sti extant are Dr. Demento and Xmas mixes...
  4:51am
David in London:

Coela, just the mention of Gimme Dat Ding has made my morning.

Stanley, yeah, yesterday’s horrors are today’s ‘Wow, what great songwriting’.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:52am
coelacanth∅:

haha i recorded dr. demento too! ultimately those tapes, along with the ones from "in concert" and midnight special etc got recorded over or edited to death making space for newer terrible recordings. i still have all or most of the tapes, but the hiss is probably 3X louder than the subject.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:52am
Emily L:

Only on WFMU are sound issues turned into killer sonic nostalgia trips... Cheers!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:52am
Stanley:

Gimme Dat Ding!
  4:55am
dano59:

Dr. D turned me on to a lot once we got him on local upstate NY radio in the early 80s... from Billy Mitchell and Slim Gailliard to the Meat Puppets
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:56am
coelacanth∅:

Cheers Emily!
... the bar i used to go to had t-shirts that read "we know why you're here" - and i'm thinking that'd work with wfmu as well!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:58am

dano i heard, or read? a brief interview with dr. demento and apparently he has/had an enormous record collection and getting into bizarro music was never his intention.

Yep he was a 78 collector first
