Evening Gary!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:00pm Gary:

Hey there, LambdaCalc! You'll have to detail some of your Record Mart finds over the years
Avatar 7:00pm hyde:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:01pm Gary:

Hey there, Hyde! Any Record Mart memories you'd care to share?
Avatar 7:01pm LambdaCalculus:

Most of the stuff I picked up was a lot of Cuban CDs... got some Celia Cruz, Beny More, Orquestra Aragon, and of course La Lupe and Mongo Santamaria!
  7:01pm Dean:

Who's the lucky SOB who got that RHCP album in the window?
Avatar 7:02pm LambdaCalculus:

I also did get one of the Tom Ze CD compilations that David Byrne's Luaka Bop label put out from them!
Avatar 7:02pm hyde:

I never made it to Record Mart, sadly
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:02pm melinda:

hi folks
  7:02pm Dean:

(sarcasm if it wasn't perfectly obvious)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:03pm Rich in Washington:

Hellooo Gary!
  7:03pm peter:

hello Gary & co.!
Avatar 7:03pm LambdaCalculus:

I also got my third copy of Fania All-Stars there, and a couple of other old Cuban LPs there, too.
Avatar 7:04pm WR:

Sadly I went to record mart many many times. Don't remember actually buying anything. I was so broke in the 80s, 90s, and most of the 00s.
Avatar 7:04pm StringOFperils:

My condolences on another local record store demise. Always sad to see them go.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:04pm chresti:

Hey Bodegans!
Avatar 7:04pm LambdaCalculus:

Pour one out for Record Mart... RIP to an awesome record shop.

Avatar 7:15pm Franco Twinkie:

So tell me Granny, what is your go to burrito in SF?

Great stomachs think alike. I was going to ask you that very question respecting your location.

  7:19pm RetroHawk:

evening all
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:19pm Gary:

Avatar 7:19pm LambdaCalculus:

Hey RetroHawk!
Avatar 7:19pm WR:

I'm going to recycle some comments I made on Ridgewood Radio earlier today, ruth asked if anyone had shopped there. I found out about Record Mart before I moved to NYC. Latin percussionists friends were getting amazing Cuban records on the Egrem label from there in the 80s which is why I searched for it on my visit in 85. (Moved to NYC in 92.) It took me several tries to find them.
  7:20pm Dean:

I hear what βrian describes, but I can't say I'd have regarded it as out of the ordinary for most shows I listen to.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:20pm Gary:

Okay, damnit, I gotta reboot -- stay there
  7:20pm RetroHawk:

hi Lambda
Avatar 7:20pm LambdaCalculus:

Uh oh, streams got crossed!
  7:20pm Dean:

Gary's rebooting...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:20pm Gary:

It was me -- I'm rebooting to get rid of noise
  7:21pm Dean:

"Perfect sound forever." Fuck you, Philips.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:22pm Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

Franco Twinkie: Well, Pancho Villa is always a good idea, with that assortment of prize-winning salsas! However, it's a really hard question to answer without more…investigation!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:22pm Gary:

I'm back
Avatar 7:22pm WR:

Wow my stream is nearly 30 seconds behind all ya'll. Listening on my phone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:22pm Doug Schulkind:

I must've purchased easily 100 salsa LPs at Record Mart. Plus a ton of records from Haiti, Martinique, Guadeloupe, Trinidad (calypso and soca).
Avatar 7:22pm βrian:

@GST: Thanks. I miss the plural-vs-singular signal in other forms.

(Sorry, Sybil.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:22pm Gary:

My apologies, clearly I'm going to have to get a different streaming computer! Anyway, it's fixed now, I can tell
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:23pm Doug Schulkind:

Yeah, you are def. back on, Gary. Otherwise, Johnny Dodds would be playing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:25pm Gary:

Doug! Thank you ...
  7:25pm zmzm:

besides the record mart, if my memory serves there was reggae csstt store there (or union sq) in I believe in 90's?
  7:27pm zmzm:

or at port authority?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:27pm ParUbi:

There's such a thing as external usb soundcards. I just ordered one because my zoom audio fails/gets crunchy all the time. Maybe that's a solution...
Avatar 7:27pm βrian:

Is that near Port Austin?
  7:29pm peter:

hey is anyone else getting a bass-y rumble? could just be my system, but when i cut the bass, rumble disappears
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:30pm Doug Schulkind:

Um, Gary. Is this constantly repeating electronic rumble, blip-bloop intentional? It's been going non-stop for five minutes or so.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:31pm Gary:

I think so? My phone sounds right ... but let's see what happens next track
Avatar 7:31pm WR:

LOL Doug.
Avatar 7:31pm βrian:

Sounds right, as far as I can tell.
  7:32pm Alicia Renee:

Holla! Record Mart! oh man. Glad to get the news this way tho. thanks for the spins & the tribute!
Avatar 7:32pm StringOFperils:

It sounds fantastic Gary.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:32pm Doug Schulkind:

Nope. I had to stop and re-start. I was caught in some weird loop kicked off when you lost then rejoined the connection.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:33pm Gary:

Damn ... so sorry for all of the sound issues.
Avatar 7:33pm Franco Twinkie:

May I, Granny? El Buen Sabor on the corner of 18th and Valencian AND La Corneta on Mission between 23rd. and 24th? I think.
Avatar 7:33pm StringOFperils:

Weird Loops. Part of a complete DJ breakfast !
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:33pm Doug Schulkind:

I saw "El Experimento" in the previous album title and just thought, wow, Gary's got guts to play this!
Avatar 7:36pm LambdaCalculus:

Avatar 7:44pm WR:

I'm a shy guy with not much cash so I never asked questions, would do my usual "just browsing". And turns out like you said, much of the great stuff was in drawers, closet, etc. It was poor strategy on my part because when I recently had the pleasure of meeting the Record Mart Latin music guru, Harry Sepulveda, I found that he is a really nice guy who loved discussing and sharing the music. Very friendly and helpful to me, even with my having limited knowledge.
  7:45pm rw:

I’m here but I’m not me
Avatar 7:47pm WR:

Their regular site is still up and a good concise history of the store.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:48pm chresti:

WR, I was also shy in places like that, especially if there wasn't a specific artist that I was looking for.
Avatar 7:48pm LambdaCalculus:

I hope A-1 Records down in the East Village is still there. They gave me a massive chunk of my collections of Brazilian and African records.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:49pm Gary:

Wait, A-1? I do not know this A-1 of which you speak
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:49pm coelacanth∅:

hey Gary and all
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:50pm Gary:

Avatar 7:58pm Flash Strap:

this Palmieri really doin it for me man
Avatar 7:58pm WR:

When the 42nd / Times Square station had renovation Record Mart closed in '98. I made it a point to go visit before they closed. There was a Hispanic network TV crew there, I forget which of the two big ones from the 90s it was. A pleasant lady asked me if I had been a regular customer and what I thought about the store. I told her of my friends in Louisiana who bought lots of records by calling up and asking Harry what was new and good. And of my own delight in getting to visit it regularly once I moved to New York. She noted that I had reasonable pronunciation of the names of the musicians and titles so she asked me if I could say my story in Spanish for the cameras. Deer, headlights, road kill. But it makes me clearly remember my last visit to the old Times Square location.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:00pm Gary:

Great story, WR. And, yes, Flash, agreed--this is a ridiculously awesome track
Avatar 8:06pm WR:

yes, chresti @7:48, I'm needlessly fearful of a pushy sales person, and often too sensitive about feeling pressure from others. I think I have finally grown out of that maybe.
Avatar 8:07pm Flash Strap:

this is so good
Avatar 8:08pm WR:

Yes, Flash, the Claudette Et Ti Pierre? and it sounds like just one keyboard doing it all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:10pm doctorjazz:

World music is a definite blind spot for me- loving the sounds, though.
Avatar 8:10pm Flash Strap:

@WR: yeah so minimal and really lovely
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:12pm Gary:

Here's the cover with that sole keyboard: rateyourmusic.com...
Avatar 8:13pm Flash Strap:

i was just looking that up! really good
Avatar 8:27pm Flash Strap:

this is beautiful, the Charmeurs Du Cap
Avatar 8:27pm WR:

Sweet. Better than I imagined. Any of ya'll use rateyourmusic. I made an account in about 2005 and added a few hundred items and tried to contribute to listings but haven't been very active at all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:31pm Webhamster Henry:

Ooh for a second I thought I heard that J P Rampal / Bolcom flutey thing that was unavoidable in the late 70s.
Avatar 8:31pm WR:

Gary, your music curating is marvelous. As always.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:33pm Parq:

Just joining the party. Yeah, I'm going to miss that place, too. I'm thinking of its latest iteration, with people standing around outside watching boxing on screens in the windows.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:34pm Gary:

Henry and Parq, howdy!
Avatar 8:35pm WR:

Speaking of what are they doing with their stock. They were closed from 1998 to 2007, about 9 years. When they didn't reopen some where by 2003 I had given up them ever opening again. Not to raise false hope regarding this closing. This seems to be a definitive pivot by them.
  8:36pm Dean:

Couldn't think what Rampal had done of Bolcom. I think you meant Bolling, WH. That record was unavoidable!
  8:36pm Filip:

Claudette et Ti Pierre rules! Unfortunatelly he got murdered some years ago and from what I've heard she's a nun somewhere in Canada. Beautiful, sweet yet powerful voice. Hope she sings for here co-nuns. Thank you Gary!
Avatar 8:38pm LambdaCalculus:

So "Rompiendo La Rutina" means "Breaking the Routine".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:38pm Gary:

Filip! My gosh, that's a horrible thing to have happened to Ti Pierre
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:40pm doctorjazz:

Lovely stuff!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:42pm chresti:

Avatar 8:45pm LambdaCalculus:

I need me a copy of this album!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:46pm Gary:

I'll send you my files!
Avatar 8:47pm LambdaCalculus:

Nice! Thanks, Gary! :D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:52pm melinda:

Great album, I agree!
  8:56pm Filip:

Yes, I think that happened during one of the many political upheavals there. He was blind and I've heard a really grizzly story of what happend, I'm not even comfortable quoting the details... But at least the music lives on. Camionette is an awesome record. I picked it up years ago at the Times Sq subway record store down by the R train entrance, that specialized in Latin and Caribbean music. It's long gone now. I've never heard their music before, just the cover triggered my interest and fell in love with it... Nobody apart from the Haitian community knows it...
Avatar 8:57pm LambdaCalculus:

Doce is 12
  8:57pm Filip:

Oh boy, I didn't even know you dedicated this show to Record Mart! Awesome!
Avatar 9:00pm WR:

Filip, so ironic, the Times Sq subway store had reopened in 2007 in the station not far from where they had been and now the just closed again recently.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:00pm Gary:

Haha, Filip! Yes, same place I found mine ... :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:01pm Gary:

Thank you, Lambda-C! Pronounced "DOH-chey"?
Avatar 9:04pm LambdaCalculus:

Pronounced "Doh-SE".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:05pm Gary:

Committing it to memory now .... [zzzt ... brrk] ... thank you!
  9:07pm Dean:

Isn't it DOH-say?
  9:08pm Dean:

Sorry, I'm feeling pedantic, and I very well could be wrong.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09pm Gary:

I'm gonna go with the Cuban's pronunciation, haha :)
  9:12pm Dean:

In that case, it's LOOOOOOOOOOO-see!

Aren't pop culture stereotypes the bomb?!
  9:12pm Filip:

Oh... too bad they closed again. Maybe they'll reopen again!!? Third time is a charm!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17pm Gary:

It just seems wrong for that place not to be there anymore. A cultural treasure. A meeting place. I think they maybe even produced a couple of compilations?
  9:23pm Filip:

Signing off! Got to go to bed, it's 3:22 am up here... Thank you Gary... Good night y'all!

La Lupe!
Avatar 9:35pm StringOFperils:

I think perhaps the sense of Descarga here is more like the English word 'release', in that it did refer to improvised jazz-influenced bolero sessions coming out of the 'Filin' movement in the 1940s, filin being like the Anglo word 'feeling'.
Avatar 9:35pm StringOFperils:

Descarga is like getting your ya-yas out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36pm Parq:

What a terrific show, Gary. I've been eating this stuff up with a spoon!

hey! i remember noticing the word "boogaloo" in the headlines recently, been meaning to look into what that's about.. i'm sure it's nothing weird.. well here i go, i'll just take a big sip of coffee, and...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38pm Gary:

Welcome, Listener Rey! And thanks for that, I didn't notice -- I'll have to go back with a more careful listen
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39pm Gary:

Don't do it Peter!
Avatar 9:39pm WR:

Love La Lupe and her inventions like Groovy-acita. She pissed off some people with some of her mannerisms and being so wild. And then there are the many who love her. The fans love her, the latin music establishment of her time not so much.
  9:39pm Dean:

I know, WR, and I get the value of a list-for-list's-sake, but it's not the narrative, it's the framing. Fifteen?! Utterly trivializes the incomprehensibly vast cultural work.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40pm listener Rey:

Senses of the French word likely to have influenced the English word include: to remove (something) (end of the 11th cent. in Old French in a gloss on Exodus 32:3 in Rashi, with reference to the children of Israel taking off gold jewellery from their bodies in order to make the golden calf), to remove a load from (a beast of burden, ship, vehicle, etc.) (a1160), to unload (cargo, passengers) (beginning of the 13th cent.), to release (a person) from a task, obligation or responsibility (c1220), to rid or free (a person) of something unwanted (first half of the 13th cent. or earlier), to release (a prisoner) from prison (c1275 or earlier), to exculpate, exonerate (a person) (c1283; a1321 or earlier used reflexively), to release (a person) from debt or a financial obligation (1287; 1291 or earlier used reflexively), to resign from or quit (an office or post) (1370 or earlier, used reflexively), to deprive or dispossess (a person) of (something) (1435), to vent or release (anger, emotion, etc.) (a1473), to dismiss (a person) from office (beginning of the 15th cent. or earlier), to fire (a firearm) (1477), (of a weapon, bomb, etc.) to go off (a1483, reflexive), (of a liquid, gas, etc.) to flow out, escape (1559).

I was in conflict - go outside and work more, OR dance. I opted the former, so this show is bookmarked for dancing later.
