Don't forget about the fact that the Rooney's son (of The Exciters) is an important music executive nowadays.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:30pm Mr. Pumpy:

@Bri...livin'. You know the drill. Haven't been on much lately. How are you?
Avatar 3:30pm Bri The Beatnik:

@Mr. Pumpy I’m good! And you?
Avatar 3:31pm Motis:

I think today's hep and fab recording / producing techniques and Interwebz distribution make it easy to lose the really startling talent and sheer vocal power of singers from back when, like Barbra Streisand. If you could hear her on a big stage all alone, no mic, just pushing air, she was pitch-perfect and could PROJECT.
  3:31pm Lord Blatherard Osmo:

Morris Levy claimed writer's credit on many of the songs he released on Roulette -- most significantly Why Do Fools Fall in Love? by Frankie Lymon & the Teenagers

Very good memories of this st entienne cd dubbed on a tape, stoned drives back and forth from Detroit, thinking of glamorous settings while looking at cornfields and dirt roads. Also thank you for still playing great music and spreading good vibes while also speaking to what’s going on and keeping it all relevant !!

@Devin B.: Yeah, this does have a great sound.
  3:58pm Jett:

I love Candi Staton, big fan, but Nobody does "Jolene" better than Dolly.
Avatar 3:58pm Joe B:

wow, great version!
Avatar 3:58pm Jennica:

@Jett: I like this one better.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:59pm Jim the Poet:

This Jolene from the song does not sound like a very nice person
  3:59pm Russt44:

Unexpected great choice for Candi S.
  3:59pm IamBasil:

I have to sa Candi's voice gives this song a very different and beautiful energy
  3:59pm pinto bean:

Avatar 4:00pm Motis:

@Jett: When it comes to covers that sound like the original record, I agree wholeheartedly. When someone makes a song their own in the cover version, like this, they become two different songs for me; they're both good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:00pm chris:

Dolly nails the lyrics, for sure. but love the music, esp the funky bass line in this recording. and Candi's delivery is still epic goodness.
Avatar 4:00pm Motis:

Lets just all agree to always love and never diss Miss Dolly, even under torture.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:01pm Devin B.:

This Kirsty MacColl song has been a minor FMU hit the last couple weeks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:01pm Hughie Considine:

I would be happy to hear "Caroline" on every WFMU show.
  4:01pm PJ:

The other side of the Jolene story!

Spot on, @PJ
Avatar 4:01pm djsheilab:

Devin B.—Really?!!! That is so wild! And random.
Avatar 4:02pm Joe B:

re Candi's version of Jolene - wonder why it was not released, considering her success with Stand By Your Man
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:02pm Hughie Considine:

It's true. I know Pseu Braun has played it a few times in the past few weeks.
  4:02pm Joe R.:

in agreement here with Devin and Hughie!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:02pm Devin B.:

I think this is the third time I've heard it lately. Maybe on Michael Shelley's show and... somewhere else?

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:04pm Gaylord Fields:

@Sheila: Looks like Caroline is stealing this man, too!
  4:05pm Jett:

As I said before, I'm a big fan of Candi Staton's she is brilliant, still think she can't touch Dolly on this one. Great to hear the amazing Kirsty MacColl. I get quite sad though, considering her tragic death. She was outstanding in every way. Love Blondie also! Still remember the olden days at CBGB.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:05pm Hughie Considine:

I DJ'd at a party attended by late Senator Frank Lautenberg, who came over and asked what song was playing. It was "Heart of Glass." Though only 5' 4", Frank seemed gigantic.

That first Morcheeba record was such a stunner. Reminds me of a certain wonderful era of life...
  4:27pm Jett:

@Motis and @djsheilab I always found it so obnoxious and clearly crafted to cash in on the success of "You Oughta Know" by Alanis Morissette
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:28pm brainiac:

I shudder to think of just HOW Ken takes everyone's temperature.
Avatar 4:28pm Motis:

@Jett: That's pretty much the case, yep.
Avatar 4:29pm djsheilab:

brainiac—HAHAHA! Thank you for that!

  4:32pm Jett:

  4:34pm Jett:

Her musical taste is impeccable, and so much in line with my taste.

Marcel's River Cult band being another cult I dig.
Avatar 4:45pm Itzall Hear:

Dear Hughie, remember that old painter, Picasso? I believe one of his most oft-quoted phrases was along the lines of "Ah, good taste! What a dreadful thing! Taste is the enemy of AWESOME!" or maybe I paraphrased that last part but still.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:45pm Hughie Considine:

I feel like you're trying to school me because I used the word campy and you didn't like it, @Itzall. Let's just enjoy this great music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:46pm Rob Kopp:

@Michael: sorry, we're listening, I'm not behind the PC. Our temperature is way too high :-) This week Peggy and I heard we're going to move to this fabulous house in december www.funda.nl...

Dear Hughie, I know these boards/text can be without subtlety or tone and please accept my word that I was kidding, just riffing on your comment but not poking or trying to school. Pals?
Avatar 4:51pm Itzall Hear:

But I DID learn what a "false binary" is, thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:52pm Rob Kopp:

@loveless: We fell in love with it immediately
Avatar 4:53pm βrian:

A binary false: 0
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:54pm Hughie Considine:

Yes, of course, @Itz. Tone is the hardest thing to detect. I only recently learned about false binaries and was psyched to have actually found one.

Horrible analogy
  5:20pm Miss Georgia Peach:

Continue your education - Confederate statues were NOT allowed after the war. They came later
  5:21pm ignatatus666:

? Comparing the confederate states to Nazi Germany means you need to study history. The confederate states had zero to do with race.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:21pm Devin B.:

Yeah I think many of those statues were put up during Jim Crow rather than right after the war.
  5:21pm JJ NY-SC:

Those statues were not there during the or after the Civil War here either. It wasn't until the Jim Crow era that they went up.
Avatar 5:21pm djsheilab:

Well, whenever they came, they are still problematic and I am learning!
  5:21pm JJ NY-SC:

You beat me to it, Devin.
  5:21pm battleaxe:

Details, details...TAKE THEM DOWN!
  5:23pm P-90:

It IS George’s “I Dig Love”. It took a while to know for sure...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:23pm brainiac:

"I Dig Love" - George Harrison at his funkiest.
Asha Puthli - at her most suggestive?
Avatar 5:23pm djsheilab:

Why does it matter when they went up anyway? I was not talking about timing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:23pm People Like Us:

Be nice, people.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:25pm Devin B.:

Sorry @Sheila, I wasn't trying to be argumentative. I actually think it's that much more horrifying that people a generation or two later decided those people were worth venerating.
  5:25pm JJ NY-SC:

You keep learning, Sheila B. I have the utmost respect for you.
Avatar 5:26pm djsheilab:

Devin B—It's all good, and I appreciate being told what actually happened. Just not in a dismissive manner, especially when I said I am learning.
  5:28pm Miss Georgia Peach:

You're doing great - keep it up! Your openness is appreciated
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:28pm Devin B.:

You're the best Sheila! I always appreciate your commentary and especially these last few weeks.

Ma'a Salaama. Off to ride me bicycle inna woods
Avatar 5:34pm JosephB:

It's even crazier to think about those statues and the confederate flag when you consider that the civil war was a very brief moment in American history
  5:36pm JLitt:

I’m way on board with what you’re saying! Thanks for the open heart!
  5:36pm Max:

RIGHT ON! Thank you for sharing SHeila
  5:36pm Greg from ZONE 5:

Sheila B! Just letting you know that Mom enjoyed the Blondie before.
5:37pm Bob in DC and/or Virginia:

You are definitely the best, Sheila B. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and feelings with us as we all process these moments that our country is going through.

  5:39pm sufferwords:

Gotta commend FMU - ya’all had been pretty editorial free in the past- glad this has changed to reflect the moment - feel emboldened to be honest it’s our only way forward - peace... but justice for all first
  5:40pm Jeffrey Davison:

Stick to your guns, Sheila. Even if the Civil War wasn't in part about slavery, and it sure seems that this was a key issue, the Confederate States were about destroying the country as it then existed, meaning secession. Doesn't seem that this should be celebrated.
  5:40pm JJ NY-SC:

What are the details of the event you were talking about on July 7th? The one with nova scott james?
Avatar 5:40pm djsheilab:

JJ NY-SC: Here you go: www.eventbrite.com...
  5:41pm JJ NY-SC:

5:42pm Bob in DC and/or Virginia:

The confederate statue in the center of my town finally came down less than two weeks ago. As Faulkner said, the past isn't even past.
  5:43pm P-90:

Those statues went up in the generations after that war as part of a deliberate, concerted effort on many fronts, a propaganda war of its own. The purpose of this “post-Civill War war” was to rewrite the history of what had happened. For starters: that war was NEVER referred to, while it was happening or in the years immediately after., as the “Civil War.” It was always called “The War of Rebellion.” It wasn’t a “civil” war fought over “misunderstandings” among citizens of one nation. The Confederate states broke their compact with the USA and LEFT our country to form their own, then made war on the US, intending to destroy it and impose their own new government on it. To perpetuate an economy built on race-based human slavery.
  5:43pm passiflora:

  5:43pm Russt44:

Arlo Parks also simple and cool. Great atmosphere.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:44pm Devin B.:

Well said P-90!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:44pm loveless:

Well, it does matter when the statues were put up. The statues reinforced the idea that African-Americans better know "in their place" in Jim Crow society. Last week, Fredericksburg removed a slave auction block from a downtown corner. Imagine walking by that everyday on your way to work.
Avatar 5:45pm djsheilab:

Yeah thanks P-90! And to all of you chiming in.
  5:45pm Russt44:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:45pm Stanley:

Natalia Lafourcade - unmistakable. Thanks so much
Avatar 5:45pm djsheilab:

Russt44—So soothing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:47pm Travisano66:

I totally support you in admitting you don't know it all. I think many in the general public expect that anyone on TV or the radio should know everything, or pretend they do. You are a person just like all of us. And your admission makes it easier for all of us to admit that we don't know it all, and to open up to learning.
  5:48pm JJ NY-SC:

It's all part of the learning we all need to do. This is a good time for that to take place.
  5:48pm Russt44:

I totally agree. Symbols of the Confederacy have no place in our society just like the outlawed Nazi symbols in Germany.
  5:49pm P-90:

It wasn’t just statues and monuments. There were textbooks and history books printed up and distributed for free to schools and libraries across the South, that rewrote the story of the war. And the central revisionist lie that generations of school kids were indoctrinated with was that that wasn’t really fought over slavery. But: hells yes it was!
  5:49pm ZeeBee:

Oooo love is so important
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:50pm brainiac:

Oh yes we can can!
Avatar 5:50pm Joe B:

RIP Bonnie (though June was my childhood crush, RIP also)
Avatar 5:51pm JosephB:

@Brian, sure, but my point is that this apparent need by some Americans to continually celebrate the confederacy is not rooted in much of an actual legacy of statehood. Rather, as others have already pointed out, it is a means of enforcing/celebrating white supremacy.

  5:55pm Dan from Delco:

This song is killer
  5:55pm P-90:

Our President(?) and others who defend these monuments as “a part of our history, however dark or troubled, that should be preserved” are missing the essential point that the narrative these monuments tell is NOT really a part of our history, it’s a deliberate deception that covers up big chunks of our history. And that narrative was used to perpetuate racism and resentments that caused generations of suffering, and intentionally kept open wounds that could have and should have been allowed to heal.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:56pm brainiac:
