Today we'll be showcasing some of the work of Charles Stepney, an American record producer, arranger, songwriter and musician noted for his work with artists such as The Dells, Ramsey Lewis, Rotary Connection, Minnie Riperton and Earth, Wind & Fire.

Avatar 1:11pm solo mon:

It’s still gorgeous just a lot less orchestral.
Avatar 1:12pm Ursula1000:

I have an older sis who LOVED EWF and this era of their catalog holds a special place in my heart
Avatar 1:12pm Sem:

Earth signing in, U1K. Fire and Wind maybe later, Greets, all.
Avatar 1:12pm Ursula1000:

hiya Sem
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:13pm Hopey Sockmonkey:

So much EW&F when I was a teen as well, U1K.
Avatar 1:13pm Ursula1000:

on those old record players where they'd repeat the side when that holder thingy was off---this stuff is blueprinted on my brain!
Avatar 1:14pm solo mon:

I didn’t appreciate ewf til later. But 100 % remember that record player biz.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:17pm chresti:

Hiyas!
Avatar 1:17pm Ursula1000:

hey chresti!
Avatar 1:21pm solo mon:

This. One.
Avatar 1:22pm Ursula1000:

Oh yes. Timeless
Avatar 1:22pm Sem:

Concur. What pipes.
Avatar 1:23pm solo mon:

Powerful! Phil Spector couldn’t clean his chicken coop!
Avatar 1:23pm solo mon:

This has “dynamic range” covered in all aspects.
Avatar 1:24pm StringOFperils:

Large production.
Avatar 1:26pm solo mon:

I would love to visit chess records around this time, musta been so much fun smoking weed out of a giant hooka and coming up with concepts.
Avatar 1:27pm Ursula1000:

can u imagine? oh to be a fly on the wall catching those vibes
Avatar 1:27pm StringOFperils:

The spontaneity isn't lost on this Dells session either, despite the complexity of studio stuff going on. Lot of separation and balance, well-recorded parts, analog compression, overdubs, 1 inch tape. OMG
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29pm joe:

There is something of an opioid like effect about the package of this music time period, artist and recording/producing technique For me it creates an almost surreal comfort in some ways. Or maybe it's because of the time period of life/youth I first experienced it.
Avatar 1:30pm Ursula1000:

hi Joe! yep I hear u
Avatar 1:31pm solo mon:

String- agree! Feels off the cuff but so focused it’s stunning to hear all the layers and actually hear them too. Mixed so well.
Avatar 1:31pm Martinibomb:

hey Ursula have u checked out ezstems/spleeter?
Avatar 1:32pm Ursula1000:

no--is that a band?
Avatar 1:33pm solo mon:

Because there’s always a harp in this studio.
Avatar 1:33pm Ursula1000:

haha!
Avatar 1:34pm Ursula1000:

MB---is it a plugin?
Avatar 1:35pm solo mon:

Oh U1k it’s a vocal remover
Avatar 1:37pm Ursula1000:

ooooh intriguing! insta-instrumental
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:37pm Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

Hi, U1K and folx! I've been listening and enjoying while i prepare food in Granny's Faux Real Diner.
Avatar 1:38pm solo mon:

I think MB is making some karaoke videos with it.
Avatar 1:38pm Ursula1000:

hiya GSP!
Avatar 1:39pm solo mon:

Gran! I have a reservation for 01001 at your faux diner.
Avatar 1:39pm Ursula1000:

by the way--b4 I forget--I was able to mail out those French faux punk comps yesterday---hopefully you should be receiving them in the next few
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:40pm Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

groovy! and groovy!
Avatar 1:40pm solo mon:

I hope you received my diet restrictions - no legos not even for dessert.
Avatar 1:40pm Domenic:

The Dorothy Ashby track had a vocal. That was different!
Avatar 1:41pm solo mon:

Uhm the cover to this record I’m deceased.
Avatar 1:41pm Martinibomb:

@U1K it's not a plugin yet no.. but the ezstems is a web version of this machine learning ai system called "spleeter" that is trained to take a stereo track and break it into bass, drum, vox, other... etc...
Avatar 1:41pm Martinibomb:

good for making edits/remixes hint hint
Avatar 1:42pm solo mon:

Sun goddess indeed!
Avatar 1:42pm Martinibomb:

and of course karaoke!
Avatar 1:42pm Ursula1000:

nice MB! will def check it out
Avatar 1:42pm solo mon:

Can we karaoke if the Dorothy Ashby track please?! Lol
Avatar 1:44pm Ursula1000:

that would be amazing!
Avatar 1:45pm solo mon:

Stepneys weird effects in effect!
Avatar 1:46pm Sem:

KIckin' stuff, Gettin' a real earful. Thanks, U1K.
Avatar 1:47pm Ursula1000:

though I do love the sitar usage in a lot of psychedelic soul he didn't really go there to make it "trippy"
Avatar 1:47pm Ursula1000:

but a kalimba with a shit load of reverb....YES!
Avatar 1:49pm solo mon:

Speaking of sitar ursula not without mention a certain sitar from stepney that is a backbone to some hip hop??? You know wha I’m talking about I’m sure ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:49pm Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

solo mon: if i just slice the "L" off can i serve you Eggos?
Avatar 1:50pm solo mon:

If eggs had L’eggs!
Avatar 1:52pm Domenic:

wow! this version of Love is Blue / Rainbow is superb.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:52pm Hopey Sockmonkey:

When I was a kid I used to collect the L'eggs eggs.
Avatar 1:53pm solo mon:

I forgot how great the dells are.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:54pm Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

my partner moved to the US as a teen in the 1970s, and had never seen TV commercials before. He's still confused about L'Eggs and Eggos and are they connected?
Avatar 1:54pm StringOFperils:

Wow. I want all of these original Dells LPs now. Never gonna happen. Nice to dream.
Avatar 1:54pm solo mon:

Hopey yeah those l’egg eggs were super useful and kinda futuristic fun.
Avatar 1:55pm Martinibomb:

I always enjoyed hear this song on the radio when I was a kid
Avatar 1:55pm Ursula1000:

Funny---I was just thinking the same thing about the Dells--gaps need filling!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:55pm Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

(PS: English is not his first language, either)
Avatar 1:55pm Martinibomb:

This is a big one from my early years
Avatar 1:56pm solo mon:

My I never thought abt it, are they connected?!? LEGO my L’eggo egg!
Avatar 1:57pm Martinibomb:

I always liked hearing it in my dad's cavernous machine shop with all the reverb - they always left the radio on
Avatar 1:57pm StringOFperils:

This stuff is as good, in a later and different way, as Hal David/Burt Bacharach stuff. It's very uptown.
Avatar 1:57pm Ursula1000:

Maurice White from EW&F on this too---smooth AF
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:57pm Jan Turkenburg:

Thanks U1K! (f.i. for making aware of Marlena Shaw!)
Avatar 1:58pm Ursula1000:

my pleasure Jan! Thanks 4 tuning in :)
Avatar 1:58pm Martinibomb:
