Daytime greetings, TomDash! Glad to be here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:02am Krys O.:

Greetings!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:02am common:

hello
  9:02am ami ad:

Hello D.J. Hello all.What did I miss?
Avatar 9:02am Malcolm:

hello tomdash & listeners
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:02am YETI BOB:

Hi Tom! Hi Handy! Happy Thursday. I don't know what we're in for today but we're off to a good start with Ornette Coleman!
Avatar 9:03am Lixiviated Life:

i'm just gonna take a seat here in the back row.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:03am Marley P. Dogg:

Morning Tom! Morning everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:05am Handy Haversack:

Hey, Yeti Bob! Hey, Marley!

Went a little over the limit there on WAB, but there was stuff that needed saying ... and then probably a bunch of stuff that didn't, true.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:07am TomDash:

good morning, folks...daytime show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09am listener 126464:

Yoo hoo
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09am Mick:

Good morning Tom during sunlight hours! Happy Thursday one and all
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10am Nulsh:

Buono estente kiddies!
Avatar 9:10am Davee:

Good morning, I am in the back row with Lix
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13am steveo:

Good morning; enjoying :)
Avatar 9:13am StringOFperils:

Feeling the mystical union of the planets and the caffeine and the holy tinnitus.
Avatar 9:13am Snoochienucci:

hey Tomdash and all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14am YETI BOB:

oh those are some high frequencies there sam shalabi!
Avatar 9:14am Stinky:

this song is scaring the dog..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15am YETI BOB:

my cat doesn't like it either. i think it's pretty cool but i had to turn it down
Avatar 9:15am StringOFperils:

This song is unlocking the SUVs outside.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15am melinda:

Morning all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16am TomDash:

sorry kitties...my dog would hate this if she could hear me in the basement...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17am redbee:

My cat is totally unfazed. Should I take her to the vet?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18am steveo:

my cat found it stimulating
  9:19am Rick Pickle:

Money Jungle is so hot
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19am Pale Son:

Ah yeah, this album always puts me in a good mood.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19am Krys O.:

This is superb!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19am Handy Haversack:

All the menagerie here ignored it in favor of final food-stealing efforts as they finished breakfast.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19am YETI BOB:

TomDash: Have you ever seen Miles Davis' review of "Money Jungle?" He HATED it. (I disagree)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20am YETI BOB:

"What am I supposed to say to that? That's ridiculous. You see the way they can fuck up music? It's a mismatch. They don't complement each other. Max and Mingus can play together, by themselves. Mingus is a hell of a bass player, and Max is a hell of a drummer. But Duke can't play with them, and they can't play with Duke.

Now, how are you going to give a thing like that some stars? Record companies should be kicked in the ass. Somebody should take a picket sign and picket the record company."
Avatar 9:23am waters7:

Nice beginning, Tom
  9:23am Rick Pickle:

Miles away from my feelings for Money Jungle
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24am Krys O.:

Oh, yes! Sheltering Sky is heavenly! Thank you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24am Peter from Dover NJ:

KING CRIMSON, YESSSS! I'm turning this up to 11!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24am Priscilla:

Discipline!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25am PaulRobeson1920:

Good tunes
  9:25am Ted the K:

Nice, I was going to put Money Jungle on my top 10 list. I think I never got past 5 though!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25am Peter from Dover NJ:

Back in the day, I saw the Discipline band twice and both times they tore it down.
  9:27am Rick Pickle:

Nothing but the hits this morning
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27am YETI BOB:

I got to see the 8-piece Crimson lineup last year and it was fantastic, truly one of the best shows ever. I also saw the 1980s lineup with Adrian Belew but I think the current version blows the doors off of 80s Crimson (which I still like!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28am Priscilla:

Saw Adrian Belew with the Talking Heads - he literally bounced around the stage
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28am maestroso:

I haven't heard this in a long time - I'd forgotten how good it is.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29am Pale Son:

Could totally be a track on Another Green World.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29am Peter from Dover NJ:

Yeti Bob, I saw the new band in Asbury Park, July 2017. Truly life altering: I didn't listen to KC at home for a year after that.
  9:29am Mark R.:

Yes, I agree, nice to hear this one again. And Tom, nice to hear you in the daylight hours.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29am Krys O.:

Belew's Lone Rhino is exceptionally good, IMO.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30am YETI BOB:

Peter from Dover: That's funny, after I saw the band ALL I listened to at home was KC for a couple of weeks! (I agree, it was life altering, and anybody out there who gets a chance to see them should go.... if they ever tour again)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31am YETI BOB:

King Crimson "Live in Chicago" double-CD is highly recommended. Excellent document of a band at the peak of their powers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33am melinda:

Cloudy-rainy in Maine too.
  9:37am Scott:

Thanks for remembering Brother Ah. Listened to his show often on WPFW here in Washington, DC area.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37am TomDash:

Hey folks, thanks for tuning in! Might not have too too much time to chime in...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38am David (in London):

Hello Groovers. A tip o' the cap to you Mr Dash. Handy, Yeti Bob, Snoochie, Melinda, steveo et al.
Avatar 9:38am StringOFperils:

Just for the francophone record, the word mots (transl.=words) is pronounced like the word Oh, with an M in front of it...moh! the t and the s aren't voiced.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39am Jim the Poet:

Good morning! So nice to hear Tom Dash this morning!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39am TomDash:

thanks Stringof Perils...had no idea...mornin Jim!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40am Handy Haversack:

Hello, David-Dot-Dash-David!

@StringOFperils: Ah! Le mot juste!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40am Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

Greetings, TomDash and WFMU crew, listeners, chatters, lurkers, and all!
  9:40am wolfette:

Tom any more info on Ruth? Trying to look this up on bandcamp and such, but no luck..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42am Krys O.:

"Come as you are....."
  9:42am P-90:

StringofPerils is correct, the t and s in “mots” are completely silent.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42am Krys O.:

So Nirvana quoted Killing Joke AND the Damned on that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43am YETI BOB:

Why does the guitar part in this Damned song sound so familiar?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43am listener james from westwood:

Riff got a workout!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43am YETI BOB:

Oh, it's "Come As You Are"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43am karlward:

So Damned good
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43am Krys O.:

That's why the article 'les mots' is used.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43am TomDash:

wolfette - great band with Thierry Muller and Philippe Doray - www.discogs.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43am Doug in JC:

The bass line killing joke stole that nirvana then stole
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44am Handy Haversack:

Ha, Kate was saying the same thing, Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44am YETI BOB:

what's the Killing Joke song?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45am Doug in JC:

@yeti Eighties youtu.be...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45am David (in London):

Bob, the classic KJ stomper 'Eighties'.
  9:45am wolfette:

thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46am YETI BOB:

Thanks @Doug, missed that one somehow
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46am listener james from westwood:

Good artists borrow; great artists steal.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46am David (in London):

But bagsy not be the one to accuse Jaz or Geordie to their faces...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46am Doug in JC:

“We’re living in the EIGHTIES” really doesn’t have that staying power
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46am Krys O.:

2080s
Avatar 9:47am StringOFperils:

Maybe if you live on 83rd.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47am David (in London):

Doug, perhaps the 80s is a state of mind...
Hi Granny.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48am Handy Haversack:

I dunno ... a disease the government is stigmatizing as somehow related to lifestyle choices ... reactionary governments on all sides ... rapacious extraction capitalism reveling in its excess ...

I think I, at least, might be living in the eighties!
  9:48am johnzo:

good mornin ye owl
Swag For Life Member 9:48am Mikey_B:

Was just listening to this on the reissue of the clean's "in-a-live" ep yesterday. Thanks for sharing this version.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49am Doug in JC:

Killing Joke claims they took it from Baby Come Back. Who knows? It’s four notes crammed in together on a fret board, lots of people could have stumbled on it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51am YETI BOB:

(listens to Eighties) OMG, it's the same damned song! (And I still don't like Killing Joke, just so humorless and flat)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51am Krys O.:

That's interesting, Doug in JC. Hadn't heard that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51am YETI BOB:

@Doug: It's not just the 4 notes. It's the phrasing and rhythm. @Handy: Right on
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52am Handy Haversack:

(I have humorless and flat moments myself, Yeti Bob!)
Avatar 9:54am waters7:

Love "Mice in the Night"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56am Krys O.:

Lithics and most messthetics bands are ace in my book.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56am Doug in JC:

Some phrases and rhythms are more common than others! Implicit, even
  9:57am Laurie:

Sad about what happened with ichiban
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57am YETI BOB:

Don't know anything about Lithics or Messthetics but Trouble in Mind is a great label founded by a couple of really great people.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57am TomDash:

Krys O - love Lithics...did a live set for EFD a while back...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58am Krys O.:

The genre of messthetics goes back to DIY post-punk: www.hyped2death.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58am YETI BOB:

@Doug: Not going to argue about it but if there were a court case, and I were the judge, the Damned would be getting royalties :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59am YETI BOB:

@Krys: I remember the Desperate Bicycles and am familiar with this style of music. Never heard the label "messthetics" applied to it before though. Learning new stuff every day here at WFMU.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01am TomDash:

ok....perhaps I'll pull something off a Messthetics comp in a few...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01am Doug in JC:

@yeti From what i understand everyone is cool about it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01am melinda:

@Krys interesting chapter in music, never heard of it (nor of Desperate Bicycles, heehee)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02am David (in London):

Desperate Bicycles' first single recorded about ten minutes away from where I am now sitting. Bit of a piece of hallowed ground for old school music heads in this part of town.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02am Krys O.:

@YetiBob: I only heard about the genre name back in 2006 when these comps came out: www.discogs.com...
Avatar 10:02am wolfette:

I love that it's powered by wheezy unreliable keyboards, as a genre!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02am TomDash:

well that solves it Melinda...up next
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02am Krys O.:

Excellent @David (in London)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06am David (in London):

Krys O - There were a number of really cool independent studios around here (Wessex where Talk Talk recorded their last two game-changers, and Pathway where John Foxx recorded Metamatic). Sadly all defunct now. Sigh.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10am TomDash:

Melinda - Messthetics comps are so good...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11am -Ken:

Morning all! Thanks for the fill-in Tom, loving the show
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11am TomDash:

thanks Ken!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15am Handy Haversack:

Acorns, the great scourge of community radio. So sad to see them claim another station manager.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16am Krys O.:

Clint's voice is perennially youthful.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am Handy Haversack:

Great set, TomDash! Wow, so so good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18am Jim the Poet:

I want to re-watch Do the Right Thing, too
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18am melinda:

Richard Edson was in Sonic Youth?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18am -Ken:

Join us @Handy. Once you take your first acorn, you will never see things quite the same ever again
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19am Jim the Poet:

@ken I'm working on a version of "Jimstitutionalized"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20am Handy Haversack:

I mean, maybe just a cap ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20am David (in London):

Anyone who has been in Sonic Youth AND Ferris Bueller's Day Off has really earned some respect. He was outstanding in both.

Handy, don't listen to Station Manager Ken. Remember uour Withnail: "Not even the wankers in the woodlands touch acorns..."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20am melinda:

There was an acorn muffin making workshop in my town once, I was sad to miss it.
  10:20am teod in uc:

oh man, that's the strongest part
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20am Handy Haversack:

@David, that's because the wankers in the woodlands can't afford them!

  10:38am Frankem:

Do not hear enough Sharrock! - thanks Great show
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39am Crudbringer:

Morning everyone. Yesterday I rollerskated while listening to Ken's big Institutionalized show. Now I am "working" and this music is helping with that. Later I'll be cycling and failing. At all times I will try to keep my mind & heart together with the Church of Sound. I hope there will be puns and sandwich arguments.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40am Passaic River Blues:

Lawrence of Newark! So great to hear.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41am TomDash:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45am Alvy Singer:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46am Handy Haversack:

I found this album on 8-track in a cutout bin when I was a teen and proceeded to destroy my eardrums with it on headphones for like a year straight. I previously had no idea who the Dictators were.

Great show Tom! Thanks
  11:44am johnzo:

hey all! speaking of police brutality and PSA's... check out fatal encounters dot org... it is currently the only national database of cop homicides. the FBI doesn't even keep that info! They have records of 28K killings by cops since 2000, with interactive maps showing the locations w. info about the # of people below the poverty line in the area & stuff like that. They're currently raising 20k to update their whole database with new columns of data for each case. thanks
