Avatar 9:02am hyde:

hello!
  9:04am DJpeterDE:

Good morning
Avatar 9:04am TDK60:

Good morning. It is a beautiful day in NYC.
Avatar 9:06am duke:

Hello. Let's head out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:07am Jeff Golick:

Welcome, and hiya, @hyde, @DJpeterDE, @TDK60, @duke!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:08am doctorjazz:

Morning folks!
  9:10am Listener Gregory:

Morning, all. I'm here and ready to be Outed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12am Jeff Golick:

Wassup, @doctorjazz & @Listener Gregory!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21am Dave in Vermont:

Bang On A Can marathon today.
  9:23am Listener Gregory:

I listened to this for 8 minutes before looking at the playlist. I had no idea what is could be. I need to go to Eastman school.
  9:23am Listener Gregory:

@Dave, where is the marathon?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24am Jeff Golick:

@Dave in Vermont! Hi, you!

@LG: marathon2020.bangonacan.org
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24am Dave in Vermont:

good morning
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26am Jeff Golick:

@LG: I'm only a recent enrollee in Eastman school. I love the study assignments, tho.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27am Jeff Golick:

Horse Lords do a tremendous version of this Eastman tune.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29am doctorjazz:

Alright, first album in the cart...
  9:30am Listener Gregory:

Meow!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36am doctorjazz:

Curious to hear the Horse Lords version...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37am Jeff Golick:

Mornin', @UM!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38am doctorjazz:

Hey DJpeterDE, just played your Jazz in the 70's show a few days ago, really enjoyed it!
  9:39am DJpeterDE:

Thanks Doc! When I get myself into a high dudgeon it helps to put my money where my mouth is
  9:40am DJpeterDE:

In this case annoyed by the JazzTimes best of 70s list
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41am doctorjazz:

I Know...Jazz Times isn't a bad magazine, but that list had BIG holes (which made for good listening).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44am Doug Schulkind:

I hate lists.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45am Jeff Golick:

:::puts Doug's name on a list:::
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46am Jeff Golick:

(Hi, @Doug!!!!)
  9:49am DJpeterDE:

I get that the point of lists is the conversations they spur, if you’re happy with a list then there’s something wrong
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50am doctorjazz:

Quite a great Ehrlich piece...have a lot of his stuff, not this album.
Avatar 9:51am TDK60:

Great to hear such current music - M.E.T.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51am Doug Schulkind:

Lists are lazy. Lists are instruments of division and discord. Fuck lists.

I say this with great warmth, love and affection for the beautiful assembled.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52am doctorjazz:

By their nature, lists are limited. What they do,though, if they're good, is call my attention to things I missed.
Avatar 9:52am duke:

The list of all people not on lists
Avatar 9:53am TDK60:

I like lists but I don't lose sleep if others don't. Hee.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53am Jeff Golick:

Yeah, @TDK60. I was really happy to be hipped to this new record.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55am Jeff Golick:

I was looking at a 400-item album list earlier this morning. Can't help it!
  9:55am DJpeterDE:

You guys are all on my good list, especially Doug who always cracks me up
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58am doctorjazz:

I usually try to look at a lot of year end Best Of lists, and watch for albums/performers that turn up on a few lists, read a bit, and check them out. Kris Davis was the most recent artist I turned up that way.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am doctorjazz:

Off on Ozzie walk (got you on headphones)...Nice out.
  10:01am DJpeterDE:

Yes, comparing lots of individual lists is great fun. Perusing one big institutional list is bad
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02am Doug Schulkind:

What about a listing of boats? Think about it.
  10:03am Dean:

The Fuck Lists was the name of my fifth band in high school, the previous four being...

"List" also means...listen.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03am Uncle Michael:

I'm listing to starboard, Doug.
  10:04am Listener Gregory:

That was a magisterial first set. Yes, I said "magisterial." Sue me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10am Jeff Golick:

Hey, @Dean!
  10:10am Dean:

Here's an entry in OED for "list" worth pondering:

Horse Racing slang. Short for: The list of geldings in training. Hence to put on the list = to castrate.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10am Jeff Golick:

Today is one of those shows that I'm lamenting I only have three hours.
Avatar 10:10am TDK60:

Jeff, earlier you mentioned a link to protest actions; where it that? / I think I saw that the Tulsa right wing rally was actually moved to another day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11am Jeff Golick:

Hi, @TDK60, if you look left, at the top of the playlist, you might see "Protests in NYC." Click on that, or just go to: www.instagram.com...
Avatar 10:13am TDK60:

Thanks, missed it.
  10:13am DJpeterDE:

Who says a flute, cello, and piano can’t swing
  10:14am DJpeterDE:

That wasn’t so much a segue as a door slam
Avatar 10:15am StringOFperils:

Good morning. No need to slam that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15am Jeff Golick:

Yeah, so much for magisterial.

Yo, @StringOFperils!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16am ParUbi:

Good morning Jeff and everyone!
  10:17am Listener Gregory:

Having used the word, I later looked it up (this is my usual order). "Magisterial" comes from "magistrate." Court is in session?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20am Jeff Golick:

Good greetings, @ParUbi, and good to see you!
Avatar 10:21am TDK60:

Interesting, JFK airport must've changed a flight pattern; all of a sudden I have jets coming over that weren't before. Also, military helicopters going down the Hudson. Your air report.
Avatar 10:23am WR:

Hello DO drummer folks, listening while working and also listening to Gary doing the reggae show. And I have to admit to being not up to date knowing any events in the world of the last 72 hours.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25am Jeff Golick:

Hey, there, @WR!
Avatar 10:25am TDK60:

WR, The Atlanta police chief just quit.
  10:26am DJpeterDE:

@WR I envy you
Avatar 10:27am Brian in UK:

Hello Jeff and listeners.
Avatar 10:27am StringOFperils:

@WR > Rayshard Brooks. Say his name.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28am Jeff Golick:

Greetings, @Brian in UK!
Avatar 10:38am Wolfgang:

What ho!! 'tis Wolfgang, climbing aboard! Greetings, ears everywhere!
  10:39am Listener Gregory:

@Wolfgang, we were napping!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40am doctorjazz:

The Montreal Tapes, great stuff!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41am Jeff Golick:

Ahoy, matey, @Wolfgang!
Avatar 10:41am StringOFperils:

THIS is magisterial.
Avatar 10:41am Sem:

Being John Malachi. Love that..., oh, never mind.
Love Charlie Haden, unreservedly. Morning, Jeff, and D:O-ers, jazz fiends, anybody not in that set of folks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42am Jeff Golick:

Yo, @Sem!
Avatar 10:44am Wolfgang:

Doctorjazz is right! I heard that bass booming out from the other room and it's the big-world sound of... Charlie Haden!! Huge was he!!
  10:47am DJpeterDE:

Is it actually Clinton singing?
Avatar 10:48am StringOFperils:

VOCALS > Calvin Simon, George Clinton, Bernie Worrell, Garry Shider, Dr. Music (Diane Brooks, Steve Kennedy)
Avatar 10:49am StringOFperils:

And that IS specific to this song, not the whole album
Avatar 10:50am StringOFperils:

Hmmm. Ginger Baker was involved too
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51am Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

Hello, Jeff and WFMU folx. Huzzah for the youth!!!!
Avatar 10:53am WR:

I am thinking it is Clinton on the lead vocal but not totally sure. Read Clinton's auto bio a couple years ago, book from library. Should get a copy for reference as needed. It’s a great book.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55am Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

And huzzah Bandcamp! So glad to hear they're really stepping up.
Avatar 10:57am StringOFperils:

@WR Do you remember the title of the Clinton bio to which you refer? I think I need to read that as well. I also really need to read John Szwed's book on Sun Ra. One of these days..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59am Jeff Golick:

Heyo, @Granny Spicy Tuna!
Avatar 10:59am holland oats:

belated yo d:o! belated peeps!
  11:00am Dean:

Brothas be, yo like George, ain't that funkin' kinda hard on you? / a memoir by George Clinton with Ben Greenman.
New York : Atria Books, 2014.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00am Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

Giant Schleps is making my day!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01am Jeff Golick:

I see you, @holland oats!
Thanks, @Dean!
I also have yet to read the Szwed book on Ra. Feels like professional malpractice on my part.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04am Jeff Golick:

If you mention Horse Lords in the first act, they have to go off in the third act. Those are the rules.
Avatar 11:06am Martinibomb:

Hi Jeff! Hi Gran Spice!
Avatar 11:08am StringOFperils:

@Dean > Thanks for G Clinton book info !
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09am doctorjazz:

Really like these Horse Lords guys...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10am Jeff Golick:

Howdy, @Martinibomb!
Avatar 11:11am Martinibomb:

thanks for the music today, jeff!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12am Jeff Golick:

My absolute pleasure, @Martinibomb.
Avatar 11:16am hyde:

Good stuff
  11:17am DJpeterDE:

Tulsa Black. I see what you did there
  11:19am Listener Gregory:

George Adams?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19am doctorjazz:

The vinyl version of The Common Task by these guys just arrived a few days ago (took a long time...shipping now is terrible...but I love that Bandcamp includes a good digital version of any album you buy immediately.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21am Jeff Golick:

Good call, @LG!
  11:23am Listener Gregory:

This one somehow escaped me back in the day. It preceded my exposure to jazz. Should check it out.
  11:24am Listener Gregory:

The McBee album title Mutima apparently means "unseen forces." Think we need some seen ones now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26am Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

This set is shaking the rafters!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27am doctorjazz:

Great Power Trio, this Seabrook!
  11:29am Listener Gregory:

This set is less magisterial, more judgmental. I think that's the right word.
  11:29am DJpeterDE:

I didn’t know Aretha is what I needed until you started playing this, thanks Jeff. The tension instantly started to melt from my shoulders
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30am doctorjazz:

Almost time to eat (been intermittent fasting, 16 hours fast, 8 hours eating. Lost 5-10 pounds (depending on when you start counting). Many health benefits, from stuff I've read.
  11:31am Dean:

Less magisterial, more judicious, I think you mean.
  11:34am DJpeterDE:

Eating for 8 hours straight doesn’t sound beneficial!
  11:34am Listener Gregory:

Juridical? There are so many words!
  11:36am Dean:

Jurisprudential? Jury-rigged?
  11:38am Listener Gregory:

I think we have reached the Supreme Court with this track, and the verdict is... guilty, guilty, guilty!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38am doctorjazz:

Don't easy 8 hours straight, just have an 8 hour window that I eat in (started with 12-14 hour fasts, then upper it to 16). Not for everyone (obviously), but my wife's metabolic labs (cholesterol, insulin, sugar, etc) improved markedly on it.
  11:40am Listener Gregory:

@doctorJ, does "eating" including drinking beer? Even fine craft beer???
  11:40am Dean:

Except *the* (U.S.) Supreme Court doesn't issue verdicts. Some Supreme Courts, e.g., New York's, are in fact not the jurisdiction's highest court. The NY Supreme Court is the state's trial court, which does issue verdicts. And they say ignorance of the law is no excuse!
  11:41am Listener Gregory:

@Dean, yeah, I kind of knew that, but saying the ruling was remanded to a lower court just didn't have the same ring.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41am doctorjazz:

LG, yup, doesn't specify the exact foods to eat (though a healthy diet, exercise, etc are better). But, hey, craft beer if GOOD FOOD!
  11:42am Listener Gregory:

The people will make their own Supreme Court, and John Coltrane will be chief justice.
  11:43am Listener Gregory:

@doctorJ, it is my firm belief that craft beer (not that other stuff) should be exempt from all dietary rules, religious and medical.
