Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:04am Listener Fred:

Can you tell me who's voices recorded your opening sequence?
Avatar 9:05am waters7:

Good morning. Bring it on!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:05am Handy Haversack:

Marley! Thanks, pal! I totally agree -- but it will mean the world to her that you said so!

We actually left copies in a lot of DJ's cubbies at WFMU -- the day before they all stopped going in to the station! Ha!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:07am WoodsOfNH:

I have a Bola Seta album that I couldn't play for years because it was on clear red vinyl and my linear tracking turntable couldn't figure out what to do with it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:07am Krys O.:

Greetings!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:08am common:

How goes it, David?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:08am Krys O.:

The radio show skits that Les and Mary did were hilarious. I think they were on a box set.
Avatar 9:09am Strandlund:

YES! Caravan!!
Avatar 9:09am Joe McG:

Howdy, friends, thanks for joining me today. I think you probably have a notion of the nature of this first set. Gitfiddle pluckers!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10am David (in London):

Shame that Caravan never did a version of Caravan.

Common - Fine here thankee.
Avatar 9:10am Snoochienucci:

Hey David! Another week is upon us!

Handy, I second Marleys comment on Kates band! I think i forgot to tell you but i did listen to the song on the drummer stream back a few weeks ago! Was great stuff!

Colleen, tell us which way to aim our speakers out the windows!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13am WoodsOfNH:

Guy Van Duser always tells a fun story about learning to play Atkins, not knowing that Atkins was using an echo box.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15am The Oscar:

Mornin'! As usual, you've selected an opening set that I could listen to for hours.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16am David (in London):

As Duane Eddy so sagely said, the twang's the thang.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16am TheLoneliestMonk:

Top of the morning JoeMac, it's been awhile!
Gettin off to a twangy start today?
  9:17am Brendan:

@Joe, I’m a big fan of your instrumental first sets. Les Paul. Less words. I wouldn’t hate on it if you crowbarred some Pedro Santos in there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18am Krys O.:

This Marksmen tune has echoes of Don't Get Around Much Anymore.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18am Krys O.:

Man, I loved Roy Clark as a tiny tot. Such a geetar wizard.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19am TheLoneliestMonk:

Re: hair.
Bite the bullet dude, buzz it off!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20am The Oscar:

One thing I've never been clear on, and this may be the place to ask: is "In an Eighteenth Century Drawing Room" a Raymond Scott original, or is it based on an existing classical piece (and, if so, what is the piece)?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21am Hughie Considine:

Oh yeah! Gabor!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21am Listener Fred:

I found it on Muppet Wiki, then You Tube, It's the Martian Radio bit from Sesame Street with the Yip Yips from 1972. It is my friends Richard Hunt and Jerry Nelson doing the voices. I worked for the Muppets for 20 years. Richard lived in Closter, NJ and died of Aids in !992. Jerry lived in West New York, NJ and died in 2012.

Avatar 9:23am Snoochienucci:

12539 when i miss the Yips it really disappoints me
Avatar 9:24am Joe McG:

@Listener Fred: Thanks for the amazing background on my intro. I would love to hear a Muppet story, if you have a favorite.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24am The Oscar:

Thanks Krys! So many Scott tunes are so elemental to me growing up with Looney Tunes that it's tough to tell which ones are actually hundreds of years old and which ones only seem like it :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25am David (in London):

Listener Fred - Top bed music trivia there, thanks. Do I detect a touch of a Spike Milligan influence on the voices there, or is that reaching?
Avatar 9:26am Snoochienucci:

@Listener Fred that sounds like that must have been such a fun job
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27am Listener Fred:

It was the best job. The best part was working with all the amazing muppet performers and the guest stars.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28am YETI BOB:

beautiful rendition of this song, which i've always loved (the first time ever i saw your face)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29am Krys O.:

That's awesome, Listener Fred!

I got to work with Prince, John Denver, Johnny Cash and so many more. Even Michael Jackson came by the workshop for a visit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30am David (in London):

Hi Yeti Bob.
Ewan MacColl had many high points, and this is surely one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30am adampsyche:

Wow, Fred, I'd love to hear your impressions of Prince and Johnny Cash.

i’m in the parking lot of my office eating a bagel and drinking coffee and this is the BEST soundtrack
Avatar 9:32am waters7:

So happy!
Avatar 9:33am Joe McG:

Hey queems! That sounds like a really nice way to begin the day! Glad I can be part of it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33am Handy Haversack:

queems! You're in Queens?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33am David (in London):

Joe, you should hear my impression of Johnny Cash. It's a great party piece. Reduces any room to tears...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33am Handy Haversack:

@Yeti Bob, have you heard Christy Moore's version of "First Time"?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33am melinda:

@queems isn't it great how music can elevate daily routines?
  9:34am queems:

@handy YES i got here at 6:30 in the morning and walked around queens for 8 miles and now i’m sitting in my car waiting to go inside. but i have over an hour, so i’ll be a captive audience for a while
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35am TheLoneliestMonk:

Grant Green's hands were s'posedly SO huge, he could splay his fingers out across the fretboard and have an open fret in between each finger!
Avatar 9:35am Joe McG:

@David: I wish I could! @waters: Glad you're enjoying!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35am YETI BOB:

@D(iL): I have to admit, I know the song mostly because of the Roberta Flack version, which I love. I don't know Ewan McColl very well. I should check out more of his work. I read that he did not really approve of any of the remakes.
  9:35am queems:

@melinda yes!! it can change your entire mood
Avatar 9:35am Joe McG:

@TLM: Wow! @YETI: He made some really wonderful records, esp. with Peggy Seeger.

This is a great set ! Loving the music
Avatar 9:38am waters7:

Not to mention the dad to Kirsty McColl. He also wrote Dirty Old Town
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38am Ken From Hyde Park:

I liked muppet game show host Guy Smiley from the early years.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39am David (in London):

Yeti Bob - He was a grumpy old bugger by all accounts, but nonetheless an amazing one. He did a whole series of social audio documentaries with music which are really worth seeking out (such as The Ballad of John Axon). My dad was a big fan.

Hey Stanley.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39am YETI BOB:

@D(iL): Music is a bottomless well ... not only all the new releases to keep up with, but all the things I've missed over the years. Can you suggest an Ewan McColl record to start off with?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39am Handy Haversack:

Welcome back to the island, queems! We, uh, tried to keep it clean while you were away, but, um, there was this pandemic, and we were pretty wiped out ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41am YETI BOB:

Thanks David - our messages must have crossed somewhere on the transatlantic cable
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41am David (in London):

Yeti Bob - Late 80s (??), there was a 'Definitive Collection: Black and White', which you probably couldn't go wrong starting with. That was the first one I got, as the originals were bastard hard to get hold of at that time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42am David (in London):

YB, ha ha! Crossing again.
Avatar 9:44am Snoochienucci:

Anybody want to go to my Zoom standup for me? Just say you're working on the Remote Diagnostics design document...and then shake your head up and down a lot. Five bucks!!
Avatar 9:48am Snoochienucci:

@Woods i have to do plenty of that on my own lol. Maybe we can swap places just to keep it fresh?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48am David (in London):

Kenny Burrell is my go-to warm jazz guitar maestro. 'Midnight Blue' is surely one of my Desert Island Discs. One of those albums I'd go back into the burning house for.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49am WoodsOfNH:

@Snoochienucci Thankfully, it's usually very short but some days (OK, _most_ days) I'm just not into it.
Avatar 9:49am Snoochienucci:

@queems very true. going to be strange just to sit in the office next to people again. But things gotta get back normal eventually!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49am YETI BOB:

Speaking of jazz guitarists - how about that Miles Okazaki? He released a 6-CD set called "Work", where he plays all 70 Thelonious Monk compositions - it's pretty amazing.
  9:50am Morphe’:

Joseph!!!!!!! Do not go Phil Schappppissssh on is!!!!!!
Avatar 9:50am Lixiviated Life:

Did you say "Louie BoBo" ?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50am TheLoneliestMonk:

Boogaloo Joe would be a GREAT nickname tho!
Now you must play some Joe Bataan!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50am Listener Fred:

Prince was on Muppets Tonight in 1997, He preformed Starfish and Coffee. We were told by his team not to address him or even look at him. Once he was on set and the puppets started joking with him, all barriers came down. It turns out he was a big fan of the Muppets and he had a lot of fun doing the show. The Muppets have a way of bringing out the child in all of us.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52am TheLoneliestMonk:

@DiL midnight blue & back at the chicken shack were two of the first CDs I ever purchased; back at tower records. (4th & Lafayette)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53am Handy Haversack:

That's fantastic, Listener Fred.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54am YETI BOB:

I grew up with a low opinion of Roy Clark because my dad would watch Hee-Haw (which I though was just beyond stupid). But now that I play guitar myself, I can see that he was actually a genius.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54am David (in London):

@Woods - I'm game. "We are just optimising the Remote Diagnostics design document deliverable." Zzzz.....

@The Lonelinest Monk - That was a great haul! Midnight Blue never gets old no matter how many times I play it.

Hey morphester.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54am Marley P. Dogg:

I’m still mad at myself for never making it to one of this weekly Les Paul shows at the iridium ...

@Listener Fred: Great story!
Avatar 9:55am Brian in UK:

Joe, is there a Psycho Billy set in the offing?
Avatar 9:57am Joe McG:

@Brian: Interesting idea! Feels a little raucous for a Monday morning, but I'll think about it at some point!

Surface Noise is like the Mr. Roger’s neighborhood of WFMU - everything about it is warm and inviting and kind
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59am TheLoneliestMonk:

@DiL yes, cheap as hell too! Before anyone realized there was a big audience for all that old blue note & soul jazz stuff!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59am melinda:

@Yeti Bob I had a similar experience, too young to get that the Hee Haw crew were important musical folks
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03am David (in London):

TheLoneliestMonk - That's a double plus bonus! Those were the days. I remember going into an obscure secondhand record shop in Manchester (tail end of the 80s) and finding that someone had offloaded a ton of old Impulse gatefolds (Sun Ra, Pharoh Sanders etc). They were ludicrously cheap (like £4 each maybe?). Suffice it to say they all came home with me that day!
  10:04am Morphe’:

My mind is wandering into Harry Parchville?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09am TristaC.LadyCaveBrat:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23am Handy Haversack:

Surface Noise sounds so great today, Joe! What a welcome way to get the day moving.

Unfortunately, we really have to move now! Heading across the river in on your insular city of the Manhattoes.

Hope to make it back before Ravioli, but who knows.

See you all later!

@coelocanth yeah expensive! I did a number of fun things with SX70 film in the 70s and early 80s. Like Lucas Samaras, you could squish the emulsion while it was developing. I also peeled the backs off, washed the toxic goo out, soaked it for a while and when it dries, you get a craquelure in the emulsion.
