Guten tag from the sunny San Fernando Valley.
Avatar 12:05pm Sem:

Tag you're it, from the grey skey over the shores of the less-than-Fundy Bay. Hey, Stork, and early Birds.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:05pm WR:

Ok, morning work shift, stopping in the "club" a bit for drink and some food, with that crazy great house band that endlessly evolves for our enjoyment and edification.
Avatar 12:06pm Wolfgang:

Hey hey!! StringOFperils there is a Sister Salvation connected to this song - Or maybe you've seen the movie "The Conncection and you know that?

There was a Night to remember.
Avatar 12:22pm StringOFperils:

Oh yeah, someone else (?) mentioned this film recently, with a connection to Jackie McLean. So much media, so little time.

Avatar 12:31pm Wolfgang:

coel!! Irene!! Thank you.
Avatar 12:32pm Wolfgang:

Sem, did I not greet you and comp you a cocktail? Goddam me anyhoo!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:37pm Doug Schulkind:

Somehow your playlist page color is a perfectly Tina Brooksian color. Well done, Stork! (The music's not bad, either.)
Avatar 12:39pm Sem:

Say no more, and pass the L'Acadie Blanc grappa, All is forgiven, Wolfgang von Storkmeister.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:41pm coelacanth∅:

comped cocktail?
and here i'm sneaking sips from my flask
Avatar 12:43pm Wolfgang:

I actually did go lookig for a way to add magenta or green tints that Blue Note used for his album covers, Dougie, but I ain't that clever:
en.wikipedia.org...
Avatar 12:44pm Wolfgang:

coel, you're allowed. Ya just gotta share.. okay maybe nowadays, bring a second flask for old Storkie-Boy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:47pm coelacanth∅:

oh, well i also have this 2-litre wine bag...
Avatar 12:52pm Wolfgang:

OK, well, now you have to share that with everybody, coel!! And by everybody, I mean of course ME.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:52pm coelacanth∅:

< this color should match the Tina Brooks album pretty closely; but i like the deep blue of this playlist better, personally.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54pm coelacanth∅:

...here you go. could i still get that comped cocktail?
Avatar 12:54pm Wolfgang:

Hey coel, did you change the backround color on your image to match the page?
Avatar 12:56pm Wolfgang:

Love that wet reed sound. Some ballad blower was he.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:56pm doctorjazz:

What a lovely tone and approach Mr Brooks has! (A great set, if you can still find it, is the Mosaic Blue Note box (which I was just listening to yesterday).
Avatar 12:58pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...it's almost like...Jazz Musicians...*listen* to each other...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:59pm doctorjazz:

And, of course, the great open sound of Mr and Mrs Van Gelder's living room...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:00pm coelacanth∅:

Wolfgang @12.54 -i did, then i changed it to match the top of the Tina Brooks album; then back again
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:01pm coelacanth∅:

...(but i don't know what it looks like on others' devices)
Avatar 1:02pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

So fortunate so much was Recorded this sympathetically. Amazing Sound w/ fairly spartan means...
Avatar 1:03pm Wolfgang:

Rudy Van Gelder's studio beats the Pyramids as a Seventh Wonder, as far as I'm concerned.
Avatar 1:04pm Wolfgang:

coel, you're a scamp!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:04pm WR:

Thank you for this Tina Brooks bday feature show. I've seen the name on some recordings but never focused on the player, the musician.
Avatar 1:04pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Looked a nice place in a little Trane doc w/ that last release!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:07pm David Dichelle:

Thanks for this, Stork!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:10pm doctorjazz:

(Rudy Van Gelder really did record in his parent's living room through the 50s, but then in 1959 moved to Van Gelder Studios in Englewood Cliffs, where all of these were recorded).
Avatar 1:11pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Just - ! - Beautiful.

Avatar 1:32pm Wolfgang:

Good call on the Lester, DrJ
Avatar 1:32pm Sem:

Hiya, RevRab, good to see you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:34pm Doug Schulkind:

Scotch Blues!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:34pm doctorjazz:

Don't know Louis Smith, but, boy, was that a lovely solo!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:37pm Doug Schulkind:

I'm more familiar with the version of Scotch Blues by Blakey in '57. Along with Jackie McLean, the session boasted one of the great names in jazz on bass: Spanky DeBrest.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:37pm doctorjazz:

(Boy, my 1:24 comment was riddled with spell correct typos, lots even for me. His tone, and time to some extent, are Prez-ian)
Avatar 1:38pm Wolfgang:

Me too, DrJ. Was so blown away by this record, as much for Smith as for all the others!!
Avatar 1:39pm Wolfgang:

Hey Comrade David im Osten!! Gruß Dich!!!
Avatar 1:40pm Wolfgang:

I had ya, DrJ. We both misstype similar-like.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:40pm doctorjazz:

Time for dog walk, but bringing the show along his phone! (You were right, Stork, the show is right up my alley).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:44pm WR:

Film maker Shirley Clark who directed The Connection film also did interesting Ornette in America film.
Avatar 1:45pm StringOFperils:

If I listen to enough of that dialogue, I'll be talking like some benny-fueled Lenny Bruce cat like for the rest of the day heh hehehe he ehe he eeeh heheh hehe....heh
Avatar 1:51pm Wolfgang:

Doc: ask your dog a question for me: Who's a good boy?? Who?? Who?? You!!! You are!! Oh yes you are!!!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:51pm David Dichelle:

Grüße zurück, Genosse!
Avatar 1:52pm Wolfgang:

Let your inner Lenny out, SOFp.
  1:53pm Marie:

Hey, loving this tune. :>)
Avatar 1:56pm StringOFperils:

Someone screened a print of Ornette In America here back in the 80s when I saw it. I think Shirley Clark came with it. I remember this scene with a wild-eyed Ornette saying that he wanted to be castrated because his sexual thoughts were getting in the way of the music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:58pm coelacanth∅:

now there's some dedication
Avatar 1:59pm StringOFperils:

I was glad that he came here around the same time, with Denardo and band. He seemed pretty intact to me. That band certainly had cojones, whatever decision was made.
Avatar 2:00pm Wolfgang:

Hey, Marie. Loving that you're loving.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:02pm coelacanth∅:

haha
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:04pm coelacanth∅:

yeah maybe he realised he was up against some opposition from the established jazz world and decided he better the jewels
  2:05pm Dean:

Anybody know how Burrell is faring in terms of health, finances, employment, and legal issues? There was all that hoopla last year, now no doubt compounded by pandemic stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:07pm doctorjazz:

Stork, being neurotic doggie parents, we NEVER ask"who's a good boy?", which could imply a doubt in the matter, only tell him affirmatively that he IS (which he is). (I know...)

It's a Blue Note world (today), and I could live in it! (Well, again, for today...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:09pm Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

Greetings, Stork and Storklings! Happy to float in the WFMU streams for awhile.
Avatar 2:10pm StringOFperils:

Granny on the hill! Nice to see you. Don't let Stork stiff you on the comped drink....it's in the fine print.
Avatar 2:11pm StringOFperils:

Naw. I'm kiddin'. This is a straight-up establishment.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:14pm Fuzzy:

Howdy all! Great tunes for a Sunday afternoon!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:15pm doctorjazz:

@Dean, I haven't heard any details about KB, but he still seems to have an active Facebook page, so seems to be ok.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:16pm Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

StringOFperils: thanks for the tip! Make mine a ducktail!
  2:16pm Marie:

Thanks, Wolfie! (I take every and any opportunity to semi-legitimately call anyone "Wolfie"). Hi all!
Avatar 2:16pm Wolfgang:

Avatar 2:31pm StringOFperils:

I don't remember ever hearing madrigal and clamour in the same sentence, Stork. That may be a first.
  2:32pm Dean:

For a couple years I had a favorite coffee shop in Montreal's Vieux Port. I wish I could remember the name...started with a C, as I recall. Anyway, this was late '90s, when CDs were the format of choice for music storage. The proprietors left CDs scattered about the store, among them the two disc Hilliard recital of Gesualdo's Tenebrae: https://www.discogs.com/Gesualdo-The-Hilliard-Ensemble-Tenebrae/master/581777 I asked them to spin it, and they did. I spent a marvelous hour or so there.
  2:33pm Dean:

Oh, man, Jaroussky is magical. Was thinking of him just minutes ago!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:33pm doctorjazz:

Sharp left turn! Threw out my neck! (Lovely scenery, though).
Avatar 2:35pm Sem:

Gorgeous sound, so calm, serene. Thank you.
Avatar 2:36pm StringOFperils:

If only people could always devote themselves to the pursuit of such beauty, and never to the pursuit of each other.
Avatar 2:36pm Sem:

What a wonderful world it would be.
  2:38pm Dean:

That entire Jaroussky album is stunning.
Avatar 2:39pm Wolfgang:

Agree like, totally, Dean.

To the max, for sure.

Stephen Stills recorded his "Change Partners" with Flaco Jimenez. Seems to me if any of these artists really meant what they sang, then Stills would have done Berlin's with Jobim and Sinatra would have done Stills' with Jimenez.
