Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:01pm Hopey Sockmonkey:

Ready for the 80s (again)!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:02pm chresti:

Hi Jeff G! Here we go..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:03pm CHUCK ROAST:

Good start, Jeff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:03pm Hopey Sockmonkey:

GREAT start!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:03pm Jeff Golick:

Trying, always trying, @UM! Thanks.
Hi, @Hopey Sockmonkey!
Hey, @chresti!
Ho there, @CHUCK ROAST!
  3:04pm otto:

Beautiful day up in the Adirondacks - bumpin' it!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks, Jeff!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:04pm Jeff Golick:

Whoo, @otto!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:05pm Jeff Golick:

Four hours later, this will be the tune stuck in your head (if my experience this week is any guide).
Avatar 3:05pm StringOFperils:

Hey Jeff, what's with the big hair and the shoulder pads?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:06pm Doug Schulkind:

Mostly I'd like to forget the 1980s (except for maybe Shea Stadium in '86.) But I'll give the show a shot.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:07pm Jeff Golick:

Just how I roll, @StringOFperils. Welcome.
Great to see you, @Doug. '81 was not my high point.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:10pm Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

Yay! I love the Tom Tom Club! Hi, Jeff and all you groovers and shakers!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:10pm Hopey Sockmonkey:

RIP Cristina.
Avatar 3:10pm duke:

Disco inferno
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:11pm Jeff Golick:

Swing it, @Granny Spicy Tuna!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:11pm Jeff Golick:

@duke: indeed. It's all going up in flames.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:11pm Uncle Michael:

True story, Jeff: When I learned you were doing four hours of 1981 today...I cancelled plans to do three hours of 1979 today.
Avatar 3:11pm StringOFperils:

Ursula 3000 (Sheena'sJR) recently revived my awareness/appreciation of Cristina.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:12pm Jeff Golick:

OMG, @UM. That could've been...something.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:13pm Jeff Golick:

I will concede that MOST of this show's music comes from 1981...but there are side trips to 80 and 82, on occasion.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:13pm Uncle Michael:

I should say that I postponed those plans.
Avatar 3:14pm StringOFperils:

Best double entendre song of 'recent' times.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:14pm Uncle Michael:

Are you going to play anything from my first Grateful Dead concert?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:15pm Jeff Golick:

Not on purpose, @UM. Nor am I playing anything from my bar mitzvah that year.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:16pm Uncle Michael:

Well, *that's* crazy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:17pm Fuzzy:

'81-'82 was my senior year in high school -- I was not listening to this stuff back then, but my musical palette has broadened and improved significantly since then!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:17pm Jeff Golick:

Wait, @StringOFperils. So you're saying car songs aren't always about cars?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:18pm doctorjazz:

Hey, Jeff! Destination Dance Floor!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:18pm Uncle Michael:

mars bars cars
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:18pm Fuzzy:

don't forget guitars!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:19pm Jeff Golick:

Hey, @Fuzzy! I was listing to nothing good at all in '81. "The radio."

Greets, @doctorjazz!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:21pm CHUCK ROAST:

I dunno. I think I took the 80's off.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:21pm Doug Schulkind:

Yow, I was on "the radio" in '81!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:22pm Jeff Golick:

AM radio, @Doug?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:23pm Hopey Sockmonkey:

UM, I just read your comment about 1979. That is my all time favorite year for music! So many amazing records came out that year. I hope you decide to do that show sometime soon!
Avatar 3:23pm StringOFperils:

The '80s and the '90s were when I bought quite a few records from the 60s and the 70s.
  3:23pm johnk77:

the grace jones track

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:24pm Hopey Sockmonkey:

I rediscovered the 60s in the late 70s/early 80s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:24pm Doug Schulkind:

What is AM radio, Jeff Golick?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:25pm Jeff Golick:

Why it's the home of oldies, @Doug!

Thanks as ever for the inside intel, @john77. Hiya.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:26pm Fuzzy:

I was on the in-house (cafeteria) school "radio" station in my senior year -- playing a lot of my parent's 60's-70's rock along with contemporary hits from the likes of Van Halen, AC/DC, Stones, Ray Parker Jr...:-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:26pm Jeff Golick:

The cool thing about a deep dive into a year(-ish) is that *any* year, when prospected fully, is revealed to be a rich year in music.
Avatar 3:28pm StringOFperils:

It's true. It just takes a little digging and sorting....and then you're your own 'radio' station. And your friends no longer understand you...oops, too much information.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:30pm Jeff Golick:

Very cool, @Fuzzy!
  3:33pm Mary Wing:

Dang, I got here late and now there is no place to put my purse on floor so I can dance! Hiya Jeff and '81ers!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:34pm Hopey Sockmonkey:

SOp, I think I can relate.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:34pm Jeff Golick:

Hey, Mary! You can put it behind the bar!
  3:36pm wendy del formaggio:

This show is effin’ awesome.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:36pm Jeff Golick:

Yay, @wendy del formaggio!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:37pm Hopey Sockmonkey:

Oh here we GO.
Avatar 3:38pm StringOFperils:

I like the sax break on this record.
  3:39pm Mary Wing:

Ha ha ha, sucker!

Such a bitch, heh.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:40pm Jeff Golick:

That might be my favorite vocal of the show.
Avatar 3:40pm Hubig Pie:

I'm a middle aged man now and what I like is a good nights sleep
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:41pm Jeff Golick:

I'm with you, @Hubig Pie. And, ideally, a nap.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:42pm Andrew Waterloo:

good afternoon... TGIDF
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:43pm Jeff Golick:

Welcome to the disco, @Andrew Waterloo. Coat check is over there.
  3:47pm Mary Wing:

Jump on it!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:48pm Jeff Golick:

Bongo frenzy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:56pm Sean d:

Having fun at work!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:56pm listener 126464:

Hello all, Konk Party!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:57pm Jeff Golick:

Yo, @Sean d! Me, too!

Howdy, @listener 126464!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:02pm Doug Schulkind:

Jeff's going go-go!
Avatar 4:02pm StringOFperils:

Hah! I saw these guys once. Great band. The Washington Go Go scene was pretty cool.
Avatar 4:02pm Brian in UK:

Hello Jeff, it was fancy dress. Uh-Oh!
Avatar 4:03pm StringOFperils:

Chuck Brown and the Soul Searchers too. Fantastic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:03pm Jeff Golick:

Hi, @Brian in UK! Come as you are.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:04pm Dave in Vermont:

alright - here
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:04pm Jeff Golick:

On the one, @Dave in VT!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:11pm Uncle Michael:

I'm back.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:12pm Jeff Golick:

DC did one of the best street painting jobs ever today.
Avatar 4:17pm StringOFperils:

Wow! That D.C. plaza looks amazing. Can't ignore something at that scale. Message from Da Mayor. Nice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:23pm Jeff Golick:

I watch that Prince performance at the Rock HoF, doing "While My Guitar Gently Weeps," about once a month.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:24pm Jeff Golick:

"Controversy" is almost too poignant right now.
Avatar 4:28pm WR:

Hey hey hey man, I been here the whole time, they wouldn't let me in the door, some dress code shit. Told me my striped overalls are work clothes like jeans. I kept saying I'm here to work it, not do work.
Avatar 4:29pm WR:

Could hear the jams through the door. Damn was frustrating, but we cool now. I slipped in.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:29pm Jeff Golick:

Maybe if you had a shirt on underneath, @WR? I'll have a word with the bouncers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:33pm doctorjazz:

Ok, time to head home, had fun boppin to the beat. Later, all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:34pm Jeff Golick:

Safe home, @doc!
Avatar 4:38pm WR:

Thanks Jeff. I told him you would speak for me but he wouldn't even check. Give a guy a badge and a gun and some begin to think they're god or something.
Avatar 4:40pm WR:

Sorry about no shirt, but I knew I'd be sweating my ass off and didn't want to ruin or lose a good shirt.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:43pm Jeff Golick:

Hydration is important.
Avatar 4:45pm Hubig Pie:

Gonna exit the disco party for a therapeutic bicycle ride.
Woot, woot
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:45pm Jeff Golick:

Ride on, @Hubig Pie! Thanks for being here.
Avatar 4:46pm Hubig Pie:

Thanky
Avatar 4:47pm WR:

We cool!
Avatar 5:06pm WR:

Now you're really playing something I can dance to!
Avatar 5:07pm WR:

Looking up which album this Ulmer is from.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:08pm Jeff Golick:

Freelancing, @WR
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:09pm Hopey Sockmonkey:

Woah, A Certain Ratio. Nice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:15pm Jeff Golick:

This set's for the drama club kids.
  5:15pm Mark R:

Far be it from me to suggest what to play, but I'm feeling some Gang of Four might fit in nicely in this set.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:16pm Jeff Golick:

Hey, Mark R! They were on the longlist. Didn't make it through to the final cut.
  5:17pm wendy del formaggio:

We’re all DEVO!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:17pm Hopey Sockmonkey:

I feel like I'm back dancing at the I-Beam in San Francisco in the early days.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:19pm doctorjazz:

Just for home, listening in the car. This is the kind of stuff I was listening to then.
  5:23pm Mark R:

The set is soaring without them anyway. That Ulmer track is one of my favorite songs of his.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:24pm David Dichelle:

Danceful greetings, great set, Jeff!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:24pm Jeff Golick:

Good evening, @DD!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:25pm doctorjazz:

WR-Freelancing is the Ulmer album that came from (alli his albums from around then are terrific). (Have it on vinyl, don't think I have a digital version)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:27pm Andrew Waterloo:

@doctorjazzz I played my copy of Freelancing this week
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:27pm Jeff Golick:

It's Don Cherry's daughter!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:30pm doctorjazz:

@Andrew Waterloo-haven't pulled them out in a while (haven't pulled much of anything out in a while...between catching up with my New Arrival pile, and listening to FMU, and some minor things like work and family, time's all used up).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:34pm Andrew Waterloo:

I've been going through my jazz and filling in some of the wholes, making a list of what i have and what I want. Some older stuff gets into the new stuff queue as always
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:34pm Dave in Vermont:

has anyone seen Up From the Streets, the doc about New Orleans music? Worth renting?
  5:34pm Mark R:

I'm really really digging your show today, Jeff. You were obviously listening to a lot of cool stuff in the 80s and 90s I had no idea existed!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:35pm Julie:

Wow what a playlist I'm so sorry I'm late
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:36pm Jeff Golick:

Hey, @Julie. This set definitely reminded me of your Goth Day show!
  5:37pm wendy del formaggio:

Hi Julie!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:37pm Jeff Golick:

@Mark R., glad to hear it, but make no mistake. I was not listening to this stuff when it was coming out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:37pm Andrew Waterloo:

HI @Julie, remembered a band recommendation for you.. Rough Spells from Toronto
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:38pm Julie:

Hi wendy & jeff! Thank you Andrew!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:39pm doctorjazz:

Hey Julie!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:39pm Julie:

heya dr jazz!
  5:39pm wendy del formaggio:

Jeff, I’m glad you followed up OXZ with the B-52s. That means I’m not the only one who heard the similarities!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:42pm Jeff Golick:

Oh, yeah, @wendy!
  5:44pm Mark R:

Well, nice digging throughout the decades, then.
  5:48pm wendy del formaggio:

Totally cranking it up for New Order.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:48pm Hopey Sockmonkey:

Oh my. Thank you for this early New Order.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:49pm Jeff Golick:

Thank you, @Mark R. Fair warning: the digging is about to get a hell of a lot shallower.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:50pm chresti:

Thanks for the party Jeff!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:50pm listener 126464:

Thanks for the fun show Jeff!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:50pm Jeff Golick:

My pleasure, @chresti & @listener 126464!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:51pm Jeff Golick:

...still got another hour to go, though...!
Swag For Life Member 5:51pm Tim in TN:

I believe I need to rethink New Order. Thanks Jeff for a great afternoon!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:51pm Julie:

this archive is gonna be my housework soundtrack this weekend I think
Swag For Life Member 5:52pm Tim in TN:

and early evening. I've been on and will be on for the full four hours.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:52pm Jeff Golick:

Yay, @Tim in TN! Great to see you here!
  5:53pm wendy del formaggio:

Not turning down the volume for Marc Almond. Hell no. Glad I’m working alone in this building right now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:53pm Sweet Corn Lizzie:

Great show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:54pm Jeff Golick:

Hey, @Sweet Corn Lizzie! Yahoo!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:55pm Uncle Michael:

This is a great show. Can I remove my Capezeios now?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:55pm chresti:

Oh! Great!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:55pm doctorjazz:

Cool set!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:55pm Jeff Golick:

Yes, just throw them in the pile with the others, @UM.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:58pm Hopey Sockmonkey:

Oh now the party's begun.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:59pm Uncle Michael:

I've never heard this expanded version of Cocktail Bar before.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:00pm Hopey Sockmonkey:

Ha UM, I always think of that mix now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:00pm Jeff Golick:

Hahahaha. Don't think I didn't consider it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:00pm doctorjazz:

Don't you want me baby-he shouts, arms waving I the air!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:01pm Doug Schulkind:

I want you. Baby.
  6:01pm wendy del formaggio:

The Chris Palestis version of “Don’t You Want Me” is fun, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:02pm David Dichelle:

I am having Long Island 80's flashbacks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:02pm Julie:

80s? Long Island? WLIR baby!!
  6:02pm Mark R:

See if you can get Martha Quinn on the phone to back-announce this set.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:03pm Jeff Golick:

Hahaha. My people!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:04pm Doug Schulkind:

Martha Quinn's half-brother was a WFMU DJ.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:05pm doctorjazz:

Boston, Baby! (Well, close)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:05pm Uncle Michael:

Martha thought Evan Davies was better suited to audition as a VJ than her. It's in the book!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:06pm Uncle Michael:

The '80s was not the JGB's best decade.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:07pm Jeff Golick:

NO argument. But this one still swings.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:08pm Hopey Sockmonkey:

The 80s was not a lot of established band's best decade to be sure.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:12pm chresti:

I missed a lot of this music in the 80s. I was in a reggae-ska-rock steady bubble during that time.
Avatar 6:12pm Bri The Beatnik:

This song takes me back to the end of Freshamn year!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:14pm David Dichelle:

I'm going to have a lot of these songs in my head for at least the next week.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:14pm Jeff Golick:

Wassup, @Bri The Beatnik!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:14pm chresti:

I shared an apartment with Charlotte, when I moved to LA in 76
Avatar 6:15pm Photocopy Cha Cha:

heythere! I was listening to the first hour while walking home from swimming, a very nice soundtrack for that, after that two hours of djGG&Beatles@Sheena and now back,my handstamp's a bit faded but can I come in anyway?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:15pm Jeff Golick:

!!!! @chresti!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:15pm fleep:

Been aboard since Tainted Love (beep beep) and it's been sheer joy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:16pm Jeff Golick:

Of course, @Photocopy Cha Cha! You got a name made for dancing!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:16pm Jeff Golick:

@fleeeeeeeeeeeeep! (fleep fleep)
Avatar 6:17pm Photocopy Cha Cha:

well that first hour or so gave a nice steady rhythm for walking I must say
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:18pm Jeff Golick:

I hope everyone is waving their scarves around now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:21pm Hopey Sockmonkey:

This more mainstream stuff reminds me of the suburban dance clubs in the SF Bay Area.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:22pm Jeff Golick:

Reminds me of music in gyms.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:24pm David Dichelle:

Reminds me of many a drive to a diner.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:26pm David Dichelle:

I wish more gyms had music like this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:27pm Jeff Golick:

I was unclear: was thinking of jr high dances in school gymnasiums.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:29pm Jeff Golick:

All of LCD Soundsystem is basically in this song, right?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:29pm Uncle Michael:

YESSSS!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:32pm doctorjazz:

Saw James White and the Blacks back in the day, Danceteria (?maybe...?)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:32pm Jeff Golick:

Y'all are the coolest!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:36pm doctorjazz:

Saw Jackson too, with the Decoding Society, and also once on the Street in my town, Westfield, at a Summer Jazz fest we used to have every Tuesday night (I was shocked to catch him there).
  6:41pm Funky16Corners:

Hey Jeff!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:42pm Jeff Golick:

There he is!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:43pm Charlie:

Hi Jeff, all! Finally getting to tune in and dance. Great playlist!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:43pm Doug Schulkind:

I once had Ronald Shannon Jackson live on my show, but only in conversation over the phone. (If I remember correctly, he was working on a project at the time with Mike Watt, who also came on the phone.) Jackson announced to the world via my show that he had discovered "The One Essential Rhythm." It was all very exciting.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:43pm Jeff Golick:

Got a link for the people, @Larry?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:44pm Jeff Golick:

Hello, @Charlie! Great to see you!
