Hey Pseu! Whotta start today. BTW kids, if like me you sometimes hear stuff here and go to Bandcamp to sample and maybe buy, Bandcamp is doing another one of their waiving their fees days tomorrow, so keep it in mind and get your favorites paid.

More info on Bandcamp’s “No Fee Friday” here. The link also has details on how different bands and labels will be distributing their proceeds: daily.bandcamp.com...

“This Friday, June 5th, from midnight to midnight Pacific Time, we’re waiving our share of sales to support artists impacted by Covid-19. Below you’ll find a list of artists and labels preparing special releases for Friday, including those donating their share to organizations in support of racial justice and change.

Also, we want to remind everyone that on Friday, June 19th, we’ll be donating 100% of our share of sales to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund to support their work. More info here.”
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:31pm Krys O.:

Juneteenth!
  12:32pm JakeGould:

@PMD: I hate that song so much.

My sisters ex-husband (who is thankfully dead now) used to drive around smoking a joint and when I was in the front seat he would exhale and say, “You know this song makes me think about your family… And how great this country is for people like you…”

Yeah… “Great…” He abused his kids and his wife, and would go on extended rants about “black people” and equate public service jobs as “they are servants; they have no right to speak” but he’s grateful that some pop song shouts “America.”

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:41pm PMD:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:42pm PMD:

Oh love that. Saw off the dead arm.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:42pm Uncle Michael:

Never the wrong time to saw off a dead arm.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:42pm Hughie Considine:

Dean actually follows me on Twitter. "Ariel" lit up my FM radio at the time. There was another song I associate with that era: "Back When My Hair Was Short" by Gunhill Road. Quirky tunes could get airplay back then.
  12:43pm Earth Walker:

Racism against anyone is racism against all !
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:43pm Krys O.:

RSM and Ariel Pink covered Dean's Ariel in 2006.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:44pm Uncle Michael:

Hughie, do you know the album version of the Gunhill Road track? VERY different.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:44pm PMD:

I have no information for you.

I do not, @Uncle. But I'm curious because that song really stuck in my head.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:48pm Uncle Michael:

YW, Hughie
  12:48pm Mike tp:

march in Garfield nj today.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:49pm Mike Sin:

@JakeGould -- yes, exactly! Neil definitely liked covering tracks by other great songwriters though -- Mitchell, Paxton, Cohen, Newman... all on that album.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:51pm McGroovey:

There's some effect on the drums on the snarl song that sounded like a cat licking something in rhythm. At least from the little mono radio speaker in listening through right now.
Avatar 12:52pm ranjit:

McGroovey, have you checked in on your cat lately?
  12:53pm JakeGould:

@MikeSin: Cool! Can I ask you a question related to Neil Diamond… Is his version of “The Jazz Singer” (film) worth watching or is it just something to watch to say you watched it and say it stinks?
  12:53pm ChrisB.:

@unclemichael: he did a terrific version, and was joined by Wes Stace as well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54pm McGroovey:

I have. We have four cats in the house (2 busy foster kittens). And the kittens were in the room. But they have short attention spans. They're only willing to do percussion on a song for 18 seconds max. I've tried
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54pm Hughie Considine:

Sparks just keeps on sounding fantastic. When I first encountered them on Don Kirshner's, my mind was absolutely blown. Just couldn't believe my eyes (and ears).
Avatar 12:57pm βrian:

Oh, Claudine, you're killin' me!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57pm McGroovey:

There's a Sparks collaboration song on the coming Todd Rundgren album. Sadly, it will probably be like the last few Todd albums: great songs with sterile synthetic production

Avatar 12:59pm Pseu Braun:

Websie! hahahaaa
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:59pm Krys O.:

@JakeGould: I saw Neil's Jazz Singer in college. It was shown for free in the center lounge. I watched the whole thing and was amazed at how weird it was. Having Neil act with Laurence Olivier is extremely bizarre. It's not repulsive. It borders on unintentional humor.
  1:00pm Websie:

the Jerry Lewis TV Jazz Singer from the '50s is... i hesitate
  1:00pm JakeGould:

Well, he seems to have wrote or co-wrote all of the songs so that’s a hint.
  1:01pm BEAVO:

Great song by Pete
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:01pm Uncle Michael:

That's pretty interesting, ChrisB. I didn't know they had a connection.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:01pm Mike Sin:

@JakeGould -- Ha! The movie is too unintentionally comic! Yes, Neil has trouble with the acting and all, but the big surprise is... just how subpar Laurence Olivier is in this... Dunno if the direction was lacking, but I think he tried to make up for everything by overacting.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:01pm Krys O.:

I'd rather watch SCTV's Jerry Lewis on the Champs d'Elysee.
  1:02pm JakeGould:

@MikeSin: Might be a case of the time commitment for Laurence Olivier was so small he just took the gig to get “mad money” and all that.
  1:02pm KlausVonB:

Who By Numbers gem! Most excellent, thank you
  1:03pm JakeGould:

I honestly think I would enjoy that film more than “Yentl.”
  1:04pm JakeGould:

“But on the side, he writes songs for a black singing group, and when a member of the quartet is arrested, Yussel covers for him at one of their gigs by wearing blackface.” HERE TAKE MY MONEY!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:06pm Carmichael:

@Krys O, that is such a deadly spot-on parody. Martin Short is hilarious.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:08pm Krys O.:

@Carmichael: I know! Just like Dave Thomas' Bob Hope and Rick Moranis' Woody Allen and Michael McDonald.
  1:10pm Neil M:

Jazz Singer -- This movie is full of eye-popping moments like that. Neil also beats up Ernie Hudson who is twice his size. There's also a hint near the end that Neil gives a truck driver a sexual favor. Super subtle, but clearly intentional.
  1:11pm Earth Walker:

Higher. Wasn’t that Don Krishners Flower Hour ? If I remember correctly
  1:12pm Fletchernyc:

Hey Pseu!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:12pm Bill in W.O.:

@Krys O. I used to drive to work in Roseland. Considering the end point of the destination, I prefer driving to Newark now. Heh. Hope yours is better.

  1:13pm JakeGould:

SCTV’s “The Jazz Singer” — youtu.be...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:14pm Carmichael:

Olivier was suffering from a severe muscle disorder and (allegedly) Alzheimers, so he was in sad physical condition in the Jazz Singer days.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:14pm Krys O.:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:18pm Krys O.:

I was homebound for 2 1/2 months to help flatten the curve.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20pm Carmichael:

@Jake, I had forgotten about that! I loved the way SCTV would weave their guests into sketches. The Dr. John scene in Polynesiantown was a classic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:21pm Hughie Considine:

Rick Moranis's turn as Merv Griffin returning to the '60s was brilliant. He forgets his mantra, which is "We'll be right back."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:21pm WoodsOfNH:

My information is that it looks like The Criterion Channel has set up a fund to contribute to the fight against racism. So for those looking or another source of film entertainment, it might be worth a look.

Also, I just checked and the white cannellini beans are done.
  1:23pm JakeGould:

@WoodsOfNH: Are they streaming “Triumph of the Will?” If so they should allow you to just give them the purchase price and have one copy of the that garbage shredded in your name.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:27pm Krys O.:

@Tim in VT: I believe it was only for a limited amount of time, just as the other titles are.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:27pm efd:

@Tim I would assume it's because the producers/filmmakers made it available for a certain amount of time, and that time has now ended.

Greetings Pseu, Jake, Uncle Michael, efd, everybody. Jake, very exciting about the cactus.
My cats just stare at moths and flies - why do they think we keep them around? Get to work!
But it's so fun to watch a cat eat a moth - like a dog with peanut butter. They must be kind of dusty and unpleasant.

I think I was used to drinking chemicals because of off-gas plastics that were in toys back then like Creepy Crawlers and Shrinky Dinks. The Lifesavers factory in my town also spewed flavoring fumes into the air. Don't get me started on the DDT trucks.
  1:52pm JakeGould:

You know what got me to stop binging on sacks of candy as an adult? Watching “Unwrapped” and looking at workers in piles of PPE taking literal garbage cans filled with ingredients and dumping them into candy making machines. So nasty!

No, I think 'geeky' was for what Pseu was aiming when trying to describe WFMU. I think 'geek' is of course fine for biter-off of chickens' heads, and for the sort of enthusiast who doesn't care about looking cool or anyone else much's approval, but not (e.g.) for someone who sits at a desk and codes JavaScript just because that's their job.
  1:57pm lex:

@Krys O. Farmers in my family have a story about riding their bikes behind the truck spraying pesticides. The loser fell over first.
  1:57pm βrian:

@scott: Thanks. Cyclamates.
  1:58pm JakeGould:

@lex: Haha! What a loser! Passing out from a spray of chemicals! Wimp!
  1:59pm lex:

@JakeGould I know, it’s awful. I can’t confirm it happened and prefer to believe it did not.
  2:00pm JakeGould:

Using the word “geek” to describe computer programmers is really crap. It’s probably the reason why there are now so many “dudebro” programmers out there one Bluetooth skateboards trying to over compensate.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:01pm Hughie Considine:

@Murakami, I see your distinction and it makes sense to me.
  2:01pm JakeGould:

@lex: Well, if it means anything… In he 1980s I knew a lot of people who tagged up anything with markers and I’m fairly convinced they did that to huff the solvent smell most markers have.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:02pm WoodsOfNH:

@JakeGould I've used that word in a jokey fashion when talking to co-workers who are really into programming/other tech in their "off" hours. I have better things to do when I've stepped away rom the keyboard.

  2:09pm JakeGould:

@WoodsOfNH: I have a co-worker who likes to go to those “Beer and lecture…” coding meetups that happen in big cities and honestly I can’t think of anything worse than leaving one workplace and going to a bar… But not to just unwind but to watch a slideshow on personal “code camp” projects. Switch your brain off and cycle your mental crops and stop thinking about coding for once.

Coders are too often slaves to fashion.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:12pm WoodsOfNH:

@JakeGould Yeah, this one guy I worked with used to go to a a yearly project "competition" where teams work over a weekend to complete a full project. No thanks. There's too much to do (reading, writing, music) to be coding in my off hours. I've also been doing it for 35 years.

Avatar 2:14pm Pseu Braun:

you bum! git back to work!
  2:14pm JakeGould:

@βrian: Or the “library du jour.” A good chunk of my job is cleaning up previous programmers “trendy” or utterly incompletion coding messes.

@WoodsOfNH: Ha! I was part of a group that was interviewing people for a rebuild of a site and we interviewed these CMS coders that used one specific CMS and they bragged about how they “recreated” Twitter in one weekend. My response was like “If you did that why aren’t you just creating a new social media network instead of attempting to get a contract with us…” Dead silence.
  2:15pm JakeGould:

But part of the reason I get tagged as “weird” in my current job is I do “crazy” things like go outside during lunch, go to museums and read books. So crazy!

  2:18pm clarke:

this is why you are HERE
  2:19pm JakeGould:

@clarke: Yeah! Funny you said that… One creep I work with passed by my desk once and saw a WFMU playlist and his whole conversation with me was… “I saw you had record covers up on your computer. You know that Knack ‘My Sharona’ single. That has some great cover art… Right? Right?”

@WoodsOfNH: Or endlessly talk about beer or play first person shooters. Tech bro culture is so regressive and sexist.

Elliot's No Change is on eBay. I remember seeing it when I worked in record stores back then.

  2:30pm JakeGould:

@Carmichael: 100% nope. If you like anything cool or have any real hipster/creative leanings you are an outlier in IT culture.

I mean Steve Jobs was a hipster. And Apple computer — before it became a luxury brand — was a hipster company. And he talked about “Thinking Different.”

People like Bill Gates and all of those ham sandwiches at Microsoft are more the norm.
